R: OT: the end of Dyn DNS

2019-06-27 Thread Mazzini Alessandro via cctalk
I use no-ip, the free version. And it's not particularly pushing the paid
option aside just suggesting it on renewal.
There's an email I don't even remember every how many months, requiring 2
clicks to keep the free subscription active, and that's all

I was just investigating free alternatives myself earlier today. (I
have not yet come up with a conclusion.)

I currently use the free he.net ivp6 tunnel so I may already be set up
for their free DNS service, but I don't know yet. (I can recommend the
tunnel.)

Most of the articles on the web mention:

Dynu, afraid.org, Duck DNS, and No-IP

among a few others. The latter sounds like they are really pushing
their paid model, though. (OTOH each of the above has paid tiers for
all but the most basic users.)

If you are using pfSense like I am, they already support:

  https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/dns/dynamic-dns.html

I would be happy to hear of actual experiences with any of these.

Needing help fixing an irix boot disk

2018-07-05 Thread Mazzini Alessandro via cctalk
Hello,

Long story short, a while ago I cloned the hd of a Fuel I got given (6.5.16,
original installation from an iconic car designer, Bertone), and all was ok.
The original hd was then left in place but unpowered, the cloned was upgraded
to 6.5.22 to maintain the classic applications. Fast forward to the present :
Had the smart idea to install an Audigy 2 zs pro ( the kind with the external
box, and that takes current using a molex from the computer psu - I used the
rail going also to the boot hd ), and the Fuel started acting weird ... not
turning on unless pressing more than once the power button, one of the front
fans speeding up and down and even stopping, Display Expander I/O errors ( I
should note that from the moment I got the Fuel I had to disable env since the
I2C on the V10 board is acting crazy ).

I managed to boot / use it a couple of times... then it didn't go past the Prom.

Removed the Audigy , after a while ( and 2 times left disconnected from the
wall outlet for a bit ) it sort of restarted to power on consistently on
pressing the button, but it always ended stopping at the prom splashscreen

Invoking a manual boot resulted in this
https://snag.gy/eMHafJ.jpg

after going in circles for a bit, had the brilliant idea of doing this from the
prom sash :
https://snag.gy/eTzqEP.jpg

thus getting more puzzled... the boot drive appeared readable, so why the scsi
hard errors.

Then I simply reconnected the original hd, and from that one boots with no
issues... result, probably the last or both shutdowns while the Audigy was
plugged were not so clean.
Ideally I would prefer not to clone + upgrade + readd programs again, and I
think that repairing the damaged installation would be better especially in
case it happens again in the future. I've tried to ask around, but I've not got
any hint, and if there was something in an old neko thread... well, we all know
that those are unavailable.

Bottom line, anyone ever got in this situation and has some tips on what to do ?

Thanks in advance,

Alessandro

I've got two, the first being an 3000/400 64mb with two 146 gb SCSI-320 drives
running on converters, one with openBSD 6 and the other with openvms 8.4
running headless. I doubt I'll ever be able to find the monitor, much less the
needed cables and keyboard/mouse to turn it into the desktop it was supposed to
be, so I've got a color turbochannel framebuffer if anyone has any use for it.
The second is an alphaserver ds10l with the 617mhz EV67 processor, 1.5 gb ram
and a radeon video card on the sole pci port, which runs openvms 8.4 on one
hard drive and the most recent available version of unsupported debian linux on
the other (I think it's sid?) as a workstation.

Nekochan.net is a fair resource for hobbyist knowledge, possibly the only place
online where people are still futzing about with Tru64.
comp.os.vms on usenet (or the info-vax email gateway) is where all of the
latest news and deep tech discussion goes on. vcfed.org has a very healthy DEC
forum too.

That's curious. Then again, end of life for enterprise SSDs is many
thousands of write passes over the full disk (or the same amount of writes
to smaller address ranges thanks to remapping). Under high but not insane
loads that takes 5-7 years. So presumably the retention while fairly new
(not very worn) is much better. Still it's surprising to see a number that
small.

I don't know if the "cold storage" SSD stuff is going anywhere. But in any
case, it seems to aim at high density at the expense of low endurance. I
don't remember hearing retention discussed at all, higher or unchanged.

Having drives with limited retention seems quite problematic. And
"unpowered" suggests that leaving the power on would help -- but I don't see
why that would be so.

As for writable DVDs and such, do they have any useful retention specs?

Consumer level SSD are, by specifics, guaranteed to retain data for 6 months
if unpowered... any more time means being lucky. Would suck to save, store,
and after some years find the data mangled...

I'd be interested in hearing about opinions of the 100GB "M-disc". I've
heard that they have decent longevity, and, the "low" capacity ones are
interchangeable with conventional DVDs.

I can still put 20 100GB DVDs (2017 technology) on a 2TB 2.5" Thin SATA.
However, I'm also looking for multi-terabyte storage.
Are higher capacity DVDs on their way?
Howzbout multi-TearByte SSDs?

What is the script? The best online resource I can suggest is Ian Mapleson's
page on cloning, at http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/disksfiles.html#CLONE (use the
tar method if the disk is EFS rather than XFS). I do this quite often without
any issue, mostly on Indys, though I use tar slightly differently (to exclude
/proc and mounts).

If you boot with the original working disk, with the clone connected, what does
fx(1M) show for the clone?
[start fx (you need to be root), select the controller, drive, and LUN 0, then
do label, show, all]

Question about an SGI Fuel issue / fuel sensors ( current - temp )

2017-05-03 Thread Mazzini Alessandro via cctalk
Hello,

Since there are a lot of experts here ( I guess, at least ), I would like for
an opinion / ideas / knowledge.

I've been told that the temperature sensors on Fuels are subject to get
defective.
Is the same valid for current sensors ?

The question is due to this... I just got a Fuel donated to me, very kindly,
that didn't turn on once I tried to. (the old owner didn't turn it on in a
while, I was told)
I've connected to the L1 diagnostic serial port on the mb and ...
The env system prevents it from turning on for 2 reasons

1) XIO V12 bias with a value of 5.81 , considered too low
2) Odyssey temp fix at 93c at box turned off

But I managed to run env while the 30 seconds timer announcing the power down
were running and... it shows that 12V and 12V IO are perfect with the psu
"running" so... any idea if the xio v12 bias sensor is connected with the
odyssey temp sensor and thus could be simply faulty.
I could do a test turning off env monitoring, but I would prefer to do it only
after hearing opinions . given I don't know what kind of damages could happen
if v12 bias is right , instead, and the system is brought up

Environmental monitoring is enabled and running.

Made some progress with the AS400. Looks like one of the hard drives has
failed, it stated that if another disk fails then there could be a loss of data.

Plan was to back up the system to a couple of 8GB QIC tapes, however looking at
my tapes they turned out to be only QIC525 MB tapes, and are not enough to back
up the entire machine. Shopping around, i am not seeing 8GB tapes for less
than $40, which is kinda costly. I do not know how to determine the total size
of files on the system, or how many tapes the completed backup will be. There
is a scsi port on the back of the machine.
If i pick up an ibm branded drive, can i connect just any ibm branded tape
drive, or do i need a specific model? I recall seeing a 8MM drive at the place
where i got it , and possibly an external dat drive as well. I have plenty of
dat tapes, I am trying to get a drive where the media has a higher capacity /
lower cost.

I read that there is a printer port on the back of my Infowindow II terminal,
do i need a special ibm printer? if not, i have a good dot matrix printer here
with a box of paper that should do the job.

Leaving it powered down after tonight until i can make a complete save.
Thanks to all for the advice so far. Really steep learning curve but quite an
interesting machine.
