Re: Spam management for forms handling

2014-04-17 Thread Peter Donahue

Hello Rob and everyone,

Image captchas are undetectable by screen reading packages such as those
used by the blind and loc out legitiment visitors. CFFormProtect is a far
better alternative as it catches spammers in the background without
requiring visitors to mess with captchas and locking out visitors that
depend on assistive hardware and software for computer screen access.

 Hi Ben

I had this problem many years ago and didn't know of HoneyPots though I
 like
 the idea a lot.

So I created a very simple Captcha. It is is easy to read and not
 dynamic, it is
the same image all the time.
 You can see it at:http://www.appreciativeway.com/email.cfm?email=info

It has worked perfectly for over 6 years without ever being changed.

I essentially hate captcha's. Just used Microsoft's yesterday and the
 thing was
almost unreadable and required several takes before I got it to work.

So when mine stops working I will probably try the Honey pot idea.

That verification solution will also work with screen readers making it

CF Developer Edition on a NAS Drive

2012-08-21 Thread Peter Donahue

Good afternoon everyone,

Due to issues with several of our external USB drives we're hoping to
purchass a NAS drive next month particularly before one of the external
drives goes south on us. We're currently set on the Buffalo Link Station
Quad which among other things comes with a built-in Web server. This
component includes Apache, PHP, and MYSQL. In addition to addressing our
file storage issues I'll finally have a local environment for developing and
testing Web sites before they go live.

I'll be curious to know if anyone uses ColdFusion on NAS drives
particularly the Buffalo drives and how well does it work? If my
understanding is correct I believe the developer edition is free. Any
resources you can point me to for learning how to get CF installed and
running on a NAS drive will also be appreciated. All the best.

ColdFusion Anthology Available On Blio

2011-09-23 Thread Peter Donahue

Hello everyone,

Yesterday I installed Blio on my laptop. Earlier this month Mary's
computer contracted the PCPerformance Virus and for all practical purposes
is dead! We'll be ordering her a new machine next Thursday as to clean the
virus would cost about as much as would be buying her a new computer. Se's
going to get a real humdinger of a rig that will serve her well for many
years. And yes the new machine will include virus protection. Don't get
online without it!

Sorry for the ramble but once Blio was up and running on my laptop I
browsed the Blio Bookstore and discovered a number of ColdFusion- related
books are available as are many titles dealing with other computer and
Internet languages, issues, you name it! Right now Blio is the only source
for many ColdFusion-related books that are accessible to the blind. If
anyone needs to find any ColdFusion titles in an accessible form Blio should
be your first stop. Their Web site is: http://www.blio.com

Re: Workstation recommendations

2011-09-07 Thread Peter Donahue

Good evening everyone,

This past week must have been computer-workstation die-off or something. My
wife's computer became infected with the PC Performance Virus. This thing is
a nasty as it locked her out of many of her programs, caused a black screen
to appear when the monitor was turned on and the computer booted in to
Windows, messages from Twitter and God only knows where else to be displayed
and wouldn't allow her to see any of her data files.

The tech we took it to said that this is a very malicious virus and is
difficult to clean. You might as well say that the computer was Dead on
arrival at the shop with no chance of being revived. We have one HP and two
Dell machines here. The machine that was infected was a Dell desktop. This
HP I use is rock solid. Mary has had a Gateway and a Dell both of which died
an early death. The Gateway was fried several years ago due to an
over-loaded surge protector. The virus killed the Dell. Here's hoping the
next machine we get will withstand anything thrown at it and will last her
for many years. Surge protectors and viruses aside both of these brands are
great and we'll get a new desktop that's one of them. Here's hoping everyone
is able to resolve their computer and workstation woes in the coming weeks.

I got an Asus laptop last year. It was RMAed back to them 4 times before
they finally sent me an exchange. The exchange arrived with a broken screen.
So it had to be RMAed back. It was the worst customer service I have ever
dealt with. You will probably get a lot of different opinions on brands, but
I will never buy another Asus product.

Dan

For workstations, I have always been happy with Dell.

If you go the laptop route, either Dell or Toshiba (high end model.. not
the
satellite).

My HP desktop at work died last night. This morning we took the hard drive
out and put it into another box whose drive had died a couple months ago.
It
worked at first, but after about 20 minutes it croaked too.

Anyway, I'll be shopping for a new desktop and just wondered what brands
people recommend these days. I'll probably stay away from HP and plan to
stay with a Windows machine. I run CF Developer, SQL Server Mgt Studio, CF
Builder, Adobe Creative Suite (primarily DW and PS), MS Office, and various
browsers and other tools.

Dell?
Lenovo?
Asus (seems to be mostly gaming oriented)?
Acer?
Gateway?
Others?

Thanks,

-Matt

Mura or Control Panel

2011-08-17 Thread Peter Donahue

Hello everyone,]

It's been a while since I've posted but I have a question for any Mura users
on the list. I'm getting ready to create a new site for a client using Mura.
I need to set up e-mail accounts for this particular client. Is there a way
to do this through Mura or do I need to do it via the Domain control panel?

Speaking of Mura I went to www.houseoffusion.com to look up a Mura
discussion list but discovered that the site is down. To be sure it wasn't a
browser issue I tried accessing that site via two computers and got the same
results. If someone can send me subscription information for a Mura
discussion group I'll appreciate that very much. I'm entering uncharted
waters and need all the navigation help I can get with Mura; particularly
since I'll have others on this voyage of discovery with me.

Using CFInclude. on Pages Placed in Subfolders

2011-06-25 Thread Peter Donahue

Hello everyone,

I just finished resurrecting a Web site belonging to one of the
organizations we belong to. The site is running under CF9 Enterprise
Edition. Because the site is very page and topic intensive I like to group
related pages in subfolders under the root folder and in some cases place
additional pages in subfolders under second-level subfolders.
Enter the use of CFInclude. I was able to successfully load pages
placed in second-level subfolders (Subfolders place directly under the root
folder) without any trouble once the syntax was adjusted. For example
CFInclude template=../menu.cfm or CFInclude template=../footer.cfm.
This syntax caused the pages placed in the level II Subfolders to load
without any problem but when I tried to access pages placed in third-level
subfolders (http://www.website.com/folder1/folder2; I received a 500
Internal Server Error. Since we have a conference coming up next week I
wrestled the content in the level II folders to the level 1 subfolders so
everything worked correctly so the site would be live in time for the
conference.

Server-Side Include has a nice feature that the includes can be
found and loaded on to pages served from any folder regardless of how deep
they are from the Web root. All site pages contain !--#include
virtual=/menu.shtml --which adds the site's navigation menu to all pages
no matter in what folders they reside in the directory tree.

My question then is how can I make CF behave the same way so the
includes will be added to served pages no matter how deep they are stored
from the root folder. If such a feature has yet to be added to CF I'll cast
a vote for its inclusion in CF10. Otherwise is there a different syntax I
should use to cause Cf to locate includes on pages located in all folders
in the site's directory tree? Your assistance with this will be welcome. All
the best.

Hello Russ and everyone,

We tried your suggestion. As long as the pages were in the same folder
as the includes everyone was happy but when pages in subfolders called
cfinclude template=includeme.cfm That's when we got the 500 Internal
Server Errors. Dave Watts gave me great suggestions to try. I'll need to do
some experimentation on my own to come up with the best solution for this
situation. Thanks again.

she sent me the wrong photo. We're both blind. She may have mislabeled the

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I've been trying to contact

unsuccessful. I've had a long row to hoe with this site and the end is still
not in view.

On the up side this site is now running on my new VPS I secured through

strongly recommend them to others seeking VPS Hosting. All the best.

Windows VPS Management Without Control Panel

2011-03-26 Thread Peter Donahue

Hello everyone,

Earlier this month I mentioned that I was looking for a VPS hosting
company. The search has been narrowed down to two possibilities
KickAssVPS.com and viviotech.net. KAVPS uses control panels that allow
customers to control their VPS via a Web browser. If memory serves me right
they use Cpanel for Linux VPS management and Virtuozzo for their Windows
Virtual Private Server management. Both VPS management panels work with
screen reading software. Viviotech.net uses Kloxo for managing their Linux
VPS machine but at this time does not currently have a control panel for
managing Windows VPS machines.

My questions are for Those of you who have Windows VPS hosting through
viviotech.net. How are you managing your Windows VPS without a full-blown
control panel such as Virtuozzo? Would I need to use an SSH client in order
to perform management tasks on a Windows VPS for which there is no interface
panel?

I'm very impressed with the folks at Viviotech.net. It's not every Web
hosting company where the sales reps is the company's CFO and COO.They told
me that they have several customers using Web Site Panel for managing their
Web hosting and they would install it on my VPS as I told them it would work
with my screen access system. Hence we're half way home. The World of VPS
hosting is a new frontier for me so knowing how some of you manage the
server itself without the aid of a Windows VPS control panel will help much
in being able to figure out a solution for this part of the equasion so I
can decide on a hosting company and begin building or in my case rebuilding
my Web hosting business using ColdFusion 9. Thanks for your help.

Hi everyone, I've recently taken a new job that has opened up some
free time for me, and I'm considering a project I'd thought about long
ago but never had time to implement. I'm curious if there is any
interest in the development of an open source, ColdFusion-based forum
application. The goal would be something comparable to vBulletin or
PHPBB done in ColdFusion, done in open source style, completely free.

It would seem that Ray's Galleon forums project is still alive and
well, so with one open source forum application out in the wild I'm
unsure if there is really need for another. So first, I want to be
sure there would be interest in such a project; would the community
welcome a second open source forum application in ColdFusion? Would
anyone use it? Is there really a need for one? Is there some other
category of software that I could invest time into that would be
better served?

I've been writing ColdFusion for over a decade, like many of you, and
am interested in contributing back to the community. I welcome any
thoughts or feedback you might have.

Re: Windows VPS Management Without Control Panel

Hello Russ and everyone,

Been there and checked it out. It works beautiful with my screen reader.
Are you using it to managed hosted Web sites for controlling the VPS itself
i.e. starting and stopping the VPS, rebooting the VPS,
activating-deactivating services, etc? The Vivvio folks said they would
install it on my VPS. This is what I meant by being half way home. What I
was wanting to know is how does one manage their VPS without a panel for
doing so. Pardon my ignorance everyone, This is my first journey in to this
realm of Web hosting. Perhaps I should step back and learn how one manages
one of these things in general before tackling the access side of things.
Any information resources on the subject will be very much appreciated.
Thanks again.

Hosting.com, Your Experiences

2011-03-05 Thread Peter Donahue

Hello everyone,

I received lots of great feedback concerning Kick-Ass VPS. It's a strong
contender where VPS hosting is concerned. Originally I wanted cloud hosting
that includes CF9. Hosting.com is all over the search engines and
prominantly announces the availabillity of CF9 in the clouds. If anyone has
had hosting through them I'd like to hear about your experiences. As it
happens they host the Alamo Area ColdFusion Users Group Web Site. Thanks
again for the feedback.

KickAssVps.com Experiences

2011-03-04 Thread Peter Donahue

Hello again everyone,
I'd be curious to hear about your experiences with www.KickAssVPS.com if
any of you have a Virtual Private Server with them. I checked them out
several times and like the fact that they offer ColdFusion 9 and use
Paralells Helm Control Panel for site management and the Virtuozzo Control
Panel for managing the server. Both products work very well with screen
reading software. Being a screen reader user this is of importance to me. I
have had the opportunity to use several Parallels products and found that
they all work well with Jaws For Windows Version 12.0.

Beyond this they seem to be a good company although I'm a little
squeemish about there not being telephone tech support available. That's the
impression I get from viewing their Web Site. Any feedback will be very much
appreciated.

Host Department Issues

2011-01-28 Thread Peter Donahue

Good afternoon everyone,

It's good to be back on this list and delving in to ColdFusion once
more. I dropped out-of-sight due to a recent move but am glad to be back in
the fold.

I'm curious to know if any of you have Web sites hosted on
http://www.hostdepartment.com and are experiencing the same madness I've
been dealing with since they upgraded their H-Sphere CP to a newer version?

I have a client's site hosted along with mine under their reseller plan.
The client site was working properly prior to the CP upgrade. Now we're
getting everything but our home pages. I've contacted their tech support.
They told me they could view her site pages on their end but we can't get
them to come up state-side. This is happening with various Web browsers on
several computers in at least two sites, in two states, and on different
ISPS. I had Time-Warner check to see if HD'S IP address was blocked but they
told me it was not.

HD currently offers CFMX. I'm using index.cfm as my default home page and
checked to be sure all site files were in the proper folder on the server.
For some reason they're server is failing to locate the correct default home
page. HD's tech support has not been fourth-coming in telling me if there is
anything I need to do within the plan or her account to set the correct
default home page so it displays once more. If any of you want to see what's
going on for yourselves here are the site links:
URL: http://www.shellbells.net
Direct URL to default home page: http://www.shellbells.net/index.cfm

I was told to contact HD's server support but have yet to receive any
answer from them. Mean while neither of us can view our Web sites.
We're getting very frustrated and I am about to pull the plug and find
another hosting company if they don't get the site working very soon. Right
now I'm paying around $30.00 per month and want to stay in that range. I've
been looking at various hosting providers and see I can get a reseller plan
for about the same monthly price. Some of these include CF9 hosting. . If
push comes to shove and I can get hosting that includes CF9 I guess I can't
complain. I wanted to see if any of you are experiencing similar issues with
Host Department since the January 22, 2011 CP upgrade and if you've found a
fix for them. All the best.

Well, if you believe in the old adage of you get what you pay for...
then decent and cheap are mutually exclusive :)

That being said... since decent is a subjective term (altho I guess
cheap is as well), a while back I hosted my blog at
http://hostingatoz.com/. Their most expensive package (which includes
 ColdFusion 8) is $75 a year.

When I was with them, it was... decent. There were downtimes, but I
sort of expected that going into a $75/yr host. I will say the
downtimes weren't nearly as frequent as I expected, and the support
was very good, at least in terms of responsiveness.

I know others who used them (some at my recommendation back then), who
didn't have as good of an experience.

At $75/yr, you takes your chances :)

CF-Based Content Management Systems

2010-03-18 Thread Peter Donahue

Good afternoon everyone,

I just got off of the phone with a client that is considering using a
content management system (CMS) to manage her Web site. The developer she
hired to redesign her pages suggested using an Adobe product to insure that
the CMS is robust and to be sure all features are accessible by disabled
site visitors and managers. She also wishes to include a site blog as well.
I believe there is CF blogging software and would appreciate some
recommendations and sources for obtaining CF cms and blogging packages.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hi Sam,

Thank you for your post. I have copied the files FreeTTS.jar file to my
standalone ColdFusion installation folder: C:\CFusionMX7\lib\freetts.jar.
I restarted ColdFusion and the jar file is now showing up in the class-path
which is good. I can dump the methods in the FreeTTS class like this:
cfset freettsObj = CreateObject(java, com.sun.speech.freetts.FreeTTS)/
cfdump var=#freettsObj#cfabort

Please follow this link to see the list of classes and packages.
http://freetts.sourceforge.net/javadoc/index.html

I'm getting somewhere but I don't know how to invokve the textToSpeech()
method of the FreeTTS class. Basically, I want to pass a string to this
function (the text that the captch randomly generates) and to convert this
text to speeach/voice. When I get an error when I try to call this method in
my code:
cfset freettsObj.textToSpeech(randomStr) /

The system has attempted to use an undefined value, which usually indicates
a programming error, either in your code or some system code.

Null Pointers are another name for undefined values.

Any ideas?

 Hi everybody,
application specific jar files usually go in

webapps/application_name/web-inf/lib

I am hoping someone could provide me with some help in implementing this
 on my
application. I am running ColdFusion 7 on a Windows Server. I have been
 asked to display
a image and audio captcha in my form. I've visited both the JCpatcha and
 FreeTTS
 websites.

I would recommend that you avoid implementing CAPTCHAs at all. That's
probably not the answer you're looking for, but they're terrible
solutions from an accessibility perspective. Instead, you might look
at something like CFFormProtect (http://cfformprotect.riaforge.org/),
which lets you block spammers just as effectively without the
accessibility problems of CAPTCHAs.

Your client may have specifically requested a CAPTCHA, but ideally the
developer should recommend alternative solutions when those solutions
are clearly superior.

I teach High School computer science at a public high school in Southeastern
Pennsylvania. I was able to get a section of Web Programming added as a new
class in addition to the Web Design and Computer Science (mainly Java with
some SQL). Unfortunately, I wasn't able to see if the change was official
until I got my class schedule late last week; first day of classes is next
Monday.

Anyway, I was planning on teaching ColdFusion fro my web programming class;
it's a logical choice (to me) and a great way to acquaint students with
programming fundamentals...and also create as many CF converts as possible
:P I talked district IT into giving me my own server for my web design and
web programming classes, and now I need a (free) CF engine; desktop security
policy would make it difficult to run IIS and CF Dev Edition on the student
desktops. Does anyone know what the policy will be for the free for
academic licensing for CF9? Is it limited to colleges and universities, or
can primary and secondary schools use that licensing scheme as well? How
will one apply for such a license?

And, finally, does Adobe have any such program for CF8? I'll install
BlueDragon if I have to, but would prefer to run with CF8 until CF9 becomes
available. If someone from Adobe wants to contact me directly, feel free to
do so. I also realize that some of this info might be covered by NDA, and I
don't want to get anyone in trouble.

Thanks,

Pete

allowing those in the blind community to have full access to your Web site.

Keep in mind too that there is now at lease one Web site that can scan
CAPTCHA images and read them to permit visitors to gain access to Web sites
that use them. One of these is:
http://www.captchakiller.com

This has enabled us to bust CAPTCHAS, but it's still a convoluted
and time-consuming process. Like you we simply want to get the information
you share online or participate in your Web communities with a minimal
amount of fuss and trouble. A verification method should be employed that
permits you to protect sensitive content while not denying members of
specific populations of our society the right to access them.

Subject: reply form with human verification

Hi All,

I need to create a reply or comment form whereby individuals can respond
to article postings. This would be similar to a blog, I guess, except that
these are actually articles of some substance. The idea is that the article
will be posted, then readers can write comments, criticism, etc. of the
article. Then, the next view of the article will show the comment. For the
most part I have no problem figuring out how this would work except for two
things:

1) How do we assure that only humans are responding? Many sites post an
image with hard to read number/letter sequences and ask that you type in
what you see. Is something like this necessary? If so, how do we generate
the images, then verify the response?

2) How do we handle html in the response? Perhaps we only allow a limited
subset of html, such as bold, italicize, and a few others? If so, what
should be allowed? Does anyone know of examples where embedded html is
validated?

I've tried googling for answers to these questions, but I am finding it
difficult to get an answer, likely because I don't know what search terms to
use.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Bill

ColdFusion 8 Reseller Hosting, control panels

2008-04-04 Thread Peter Donahue
Good evening everyone,

I almost had a ColdFusion 8 reseller account established with
gearhost.com. Being a screen reader user the words like, Custom Control
Panel should have sent upp the red flags as custom software is often not
accessible to screen reading software. All went well until I logged in to
their control panel. A rude surprise awaited me once I was logged in as next
to nothing could be done by one using adaptive technology. After attempting
to find a solution with one of their tech support folks I decided to cancel
the account due to the inaccessibility of their control panel with screen
reading software. I told them to be sure my $200.00+ is credited back to my
credit card, and that they work with screen reader users to ensure that the
Cpanel and other custom packages they develop can be used independently by
us. Since they're in Denver Colorado they have the resources and technical
know-how of the Colorado Center for the Blind, located in Littleton, at
their doorstep. They could work with the CCB to ensure that future upgrades
to their Web interfaces are completely usable by the blind and others who
use adaptive solutions for computer access. For your information the CCB'S
URL is:
http://www.cocenter.org

Andy Matthews please don't take this ppersonally as your intentions were
good. This is something you and others here have little or no knowledge of.
Again thanks for the recommendation.

This leaves me still in need of a Cf8 Reseller account with a usable control
panel. Helm, Cpanel, and Plesk work well with screen readers. If any of you
canpoint me to any CF8 hosts that use those three control panels that will
be a big help. I'd like to be set up with a new ColdFusion 8 reseller
account by the end of the month and have my $200.00+ back in my bank
account. Again thanks for your assistance.

I've been with Gearhost.com for about 5 years. They're solid. They have the
occasional customer service hiccup, but tickets are generally handled within
24 hours, their control panel is top notch (allowing you to create your own
DSNs is a plus), and so on.

I LOVE the fact that their accounts allow multiple domains...that was one of
the primary selling points for me.

The _ character in variable names

2008-01-24 Thread Peter Donahue
Hello everyone,

I have an application I need to get up and running ASAP. We've been
trying to create it using PHP. Right now I feel like I'm Beowulf and that
PHP application is Grendle. I have created email applications using
ColdFusion and got them to run. I'm considering using ColdFusion to sleigh
that dragon so we can get the app up and running this weekend and freeing us
up to continue to debug the PHP version. It will also allow the organization
in question to carry on its business. Some of the variable names include the
_character such as first_name. Is this a legal syntax in ColdFusion
allowing me to use something like #first_name# to designate the variables in
the form processor? Thanks for the help.

2008-01-24 Thread Peter Donahue
Hello again everyone,

Thanks for the answers on my question concerning the _character in
fieldnames. I currently have a reseller account with a company based in the
UK. While their service has been about average I'm not happy with the server
response time and the lack of live tech support and having to pay by the
British pound. Can you recommend a hosting company in the U.S. with
affordable reseller accounts with abundent disk space, , and live tech
support. Being from San Antonio I'm in Rack Space Country and would consider
a VPS, but the services I've seen thus far are slightly beyond our budget.
Perhaps I should check with them again as they're opening a new server and
support center in the old Windsor Park Mall. If anyone has had experience
with Rack Space please share them with me. I know they offer ColdFusion, but
am not sure if CF 8 is available from them yet. Thanks for the help and
suggestions.

 Hi:
I googled Coldfusion Tutorial Collection websites a lot but EasyCFM and
Adobe were the major

more avaialable. Adobe
tutorials are great but not enough and EasyCFM is not updated very fast (I
checked and most of
the tutorials were posted in 2005-6) and now we have a very great new CF

which has a great potential for a huge collection of tutorials to be made
for. What do you
think guys? I know Ben Forta's books are in the market and they are the

the web developers to
learn more about CF8 and get glued to the ease of use and beauty of CF8.

Blog CFC, PHP Equivalent

2007-07-26 Thread Peter Donahue
Hello again everyone,

Sorry if this is slightly OT, but after exhausting all other lists to
which such a post would go I figured I would send this inquiry here as folks
on the other lists I'm on have never heard of Blog CFC let alone know if
there is a similar blog module written in PHP. I have several sights on a
server that does not support ColdFusion of any flavor, but that does support
PHP 4 and 5. I'd like to know if there is a similar product to Blog CFC I
could run on these Web Sites, and from where can I get it?

As for my Blog CFC install we're getting there one file upload at a

much else is on my plate. Talk to you later.

We are testing to see if it is possible to run a Virtualized
(VMWare) Version of a Cold Fusion application, which will be accessed
 by IP address.
We have VMWare running on a test server and installed a virtualized
version of the application and everything works.
Sporadically, we get a Connection Reset by Peers error, that I have
been unable to track down and resolve.

We have looked at both the CF server and IIS logs and can't find any
 errors.
It seems like we are getting a network error, but I am not looking in
the right place to find the error.

Has anyone ever used Cold Fusion with VMWare? Any ideas why we would
 sporadically get a connection error?

Many people are running CF on VMware, even in production environments.

This doesn't look like an error specific to VMware, but virtual servers can
have the same sort of problems as physical servers. Connection reset by
peer typically indicates that the client is no longer listening for a
response, which may happen if the response takes too long to get to the
client.

Are you using bridged networking, or NAT for your VMware server? I would
expect there to be some performance overhead with NAT, although I haven't
done any real testing to see if that's the case.

Navicat. So far it's done the best for me, particularly in terms of creating
correct SQL dumps with all the proper information included (like defaults,
indexes, etc.). I liked DBManager particularly since I do work with multiple
databases but I kept running into instances where it was not doing proper
cases, which is kind of important with MySQL.

Re: Installing Blog CFC

2007-07-21 Thread Peter Donahue
Hello Raymond,

I couldn't ask for better help than from the component's creator. I'll
look at the documentation again and will contact you if I run in to
problems.

I see that the component includes a CAPTCHA. One enhancement I would
suggest off-hand would be to permit one to use the graphical verification,
or a word verification scheme to ensure that the component will be protected
from spam bots, yet will still be accessible to those with disabilities.
I'll file this enhancement through the proper channels when I begin
installing the blog. Thanks for your message.

Hey Peter, I'm the author of BlogCFC. I wanted to address a few things.

1) I tried to make the docs as clear as possible, but if you find
something not clear, please file a bug/enhancement request over at
blogcfc.riaforge.org.

2) You don't have to know anything about CFCs to use BlogCFC. Now, you
_should_ learn how to write CFCs, but if you are busy rebuilding your
server, I would get the app back up and worry about learning CFCs
later.

mysql and media servers

2007-07-21 Thread Peter Donahue
Good evening everyone,

I just finished creating the database and the DSN for Blog CFC. My first
question is do I upload the mysql.sol to a folder on the server, or does
this need to be imported in to the mysql Administrator to create the tables
the Blog_CFC Database will use? I looked at the documentation for Blog CFC
again and find it to be more straight forward than I originally thought. And
yes I downloaded the most recent version so we're good to go with it.

Last week I posted concerning the limited amount of disk space one tends
to get with ColdFusion Hosting accounts. A few of you suggested pulling
audio and video files from a media server. Do you have any suggestions for
online media storage you can recommend that will allow me to have more disk
space to store these files so they can be accessed by my Web Sites? Your
recommendations will be very much appreciated.

Re: Time for another CF hosting site thread...

2007-07-16 Thread Peter Donahue
Hello Charlie and listers,

I'll join this thread. I'm finding that most ColdFusion Hosting
companies while they offer support for many of CF's features they tend to be
quite stingy on disk space. During the National Federation of the Blind
Convention several weeks ago we established a new group called the National
Federation of the Blind Living History Group. One initiative of this group
is to digitize old recordings of past NFB events and place them on a Web
site for members and other interested individuals to listen to or download
to their hard drive, podcatcher, or whatever other device they have for
offline listening and storage. I've seen some hosting companies who offer
accounts with very generous amounts of disk space for a very cheap price;
500 GB to be exact. This would be more than enough to meet our needs for a
good while, but they don't support ColdFusion. If anyone knows of CF hosting
companies offering accounts with similar amounts of disk space who won't
take us to the bank that would be wonderful! We have a service used to
support a number of our affiliate Web sites and discussion lists, but it
does not support ColdFusion. I tried running some CF code on that host, but
didn't get as much as an invalid parser construct error. It simply ignored
the CF code and displayed the page without executing anything. Our Sysop has
been great about allotting us the disk space we need for our affiliate Web
sites. A project of this nature would require us to have a large amount of
space for file storage which we can manage ourselves and have under complete
control of our group. Any suggestions for CF hosts that would meet our needs
would be appreciated. I all ready use Yetihost for some of my CF accounts
of paying customers, but even they are stingy on disk space not to mention
having to pay by the British pound instead of the Yankee Dollar. Again your
suggestions and recommendations will be very much appreciated.

: Alt tag andNFB Convention

2007-06-01 Thread Peter Donahue
Good evening Sandra and everyone,

As one who is blind and uses a screen reader for exactly that reason
you're right on. I looked at the site and the tag Pete sent in his message.
In so far as I know when using the alt attribute you must use a proper
description. For example:
img onmouseover=imgMain.src='photos/large/#rsGetDetails.pic1#';
src=photos/thumbs/#rsGetDetails.pic1# class=border name=thumbnail1
border=0 width=50 height=50 alt=Home /

The screen reader sees this text and gives the link a proper name.

Another way alt text is used is to describe images such as pictures.
Example:

img src=http://www.nfb.org/images/nfb_mfi.gif alt=National Federation of
the Blind members surrounding the outdoor stage at Sentennial Park. Former
United States Embassador Andrew Young Addresses the croud during the
first-ever NFB March for Independence. /

I hope these examples will enable you to create and use alt text
correctly. By the way the event I described in my photo description alt text
example above is slated to take place on the morning of July 3, 2007 in
Atlanta Georgia during the 67th annual Convention of the National Federation
of the Blind. Our convention will begin on June 29th and will conclude on
Friday July 6th, 2007. It is being held at the Marriott Marquis in downtown
Atlanta.

I'm mentioning this here as among the many activities taking place
throughout the week there will be seminars and demonstrations of the
assistive technology used by blind computer users. There will also be an
exhibit hall in the International Level in the Marriott where you can visit
with vendors of these products and ask questions of their representatives to
help you be better able to ensure your Web sites and applications can be
used by persons with disabilities including the blind.

A number of our special interest groups are also concerned with the use
of access technology and ensuring that applications and Web sites are
disabled-friendly. I'll post a list of these in a subsequent message in the
hopes that those of you that can get away to spend some time at our
convention will know when these activities are taking place. I'll only list
computer and Internet-related meetings.

Visits from the Web and application design community also helps us
familliarize ourselves with new technologies being used to create these
applications. This will go a long way to help us determine how best to
design RIAS these technologies are used to build to ensure their usability
by the blind and disabled. For example I'm one of only a few blind
ColdFusion developers I know of. Not very many of us are acquainted with
frameworks such as ColdSpring, Mach II, Model Glue, Flex, Spri, AJAX, etc.
And let me knot forget Apollo. The discussions I've read and heard lead me
to think that some very useful applications could be created with Apollo
which could be made to work with screen readers.

Anyway I wanted to let you all know about the convention in the event
those of you who will be in Atlanta during the first week of July can visit
with us if your schedules permit to learn how assistive technology works,
and to get tips and tricks from end-users of your creations the blind
themselves on how to ensure their accessibility for blind persons. For more
information about the National Federation of the Blind and the up-coming
National Convention please visit:
http://www.nfb.org

Here's hoping some of you can attend the convention and I, along with other
blind individuals will get a chance to meet you in person. While I'm at it
are there folks on here who are members of the Atlanta CFUG?I just visited
their Web site to find out when the July meeting was held. Assuming it's
held on a night when there's nothing going on there may be a few of us who
might want to attend depending on the location in relation to the Marriott
Marquis. I looked on their Web site and did not see a date listed for their
July Meeting. If someone has that information please let me know so I can
spread the word among our Webmasters and others who may want to attend to
learn more about CF, and what it could do for our Web sites. I know that's
more than I intended for this message, but I did want to alert you all to
our convention to peak your interest in possibly coming to see assistive
technology and see demonstrations of how it works. Let me quit for now to
gather the list of events you may want to attend. All convention sessions
including special interest seminars are open to the public. And best of all
they're free. Best wishes to everyone for a great weekend.

List Management Solutions

2007-04-21 Thread Peter Donahue
Hello everyone,

I moderate a number of e-mail lists which are getting spammed heavily by
spam bots despite Yahoogroups use of a CAPTIA to limit such spamming. Since
I now own a reseller account I would like to remove the lists from Yahoo and
host them on my own account. Does anyone have, or know of a ColdFusion
e-mail list management package I can install for this purpose? I feel that
if I host the list myself, and implament the Form Validation Tool discussed
earlier this week I can have better control of the list and can eliminate
what at times is very obnoxious spam. I'd like to give another individual
who has agreed to moderate the list her own login information in addition to
having my own list manager account. Many of the subscribers on one list are
women who don't appreciate bedroom matters in their inbox every time they
wish to read list mail.

I would need something I can run on a remote host. Thanks in advance for
your help and suggestions.

: Site Check please: www.CodeFetcher.com

2007-04-17 Thread Peter Donahue
Hello Curt and listers,

Your site is great. I checked it out and found it very easy to navigate.
While there I downloaded a few CF code snipids for use in several projects.
If you used the CF Form Validation program others discussed here I did not
have any trouble with filling out the new account form. In fact I doubt my
screen reader even knew it was there.

Does the site use AJAX? This too presented no problem. Until the screen
reader developers create scripting to detect pages that use AJAX and read
the changed text automatically one needs to arrow to the area that has
changed and read the updated text. Over-all this is not a problem. Great job
on your Web site. I'll check back often for new goodies and will upload some
of my own.

I downloaded the current date program but am looking for some CF code
to include the current time as well. Does anyone have code that will allow
me to display the time in the users time zone in addition to the date? When
completed I want the lines to read:
Today is, (Current date).
The time is: (Current time).

I'm also looking for a CF hit counter to include on the sites home
pages. I used one a while back that required me to store the hits in a
database. Are there hit counters that do not require the use of a database I
can install? All of the CF hit counters I've seen are accessible to screen
readers. Thanks for your help.

Re: CF CAPTCHA - need help!

2007-04-16 Thread Peter Donahue
Hello Less and listers,

I applaud your approach with this captia solution. As one who uses a screen
reader to access applications and Web sites these captias are a real problem
for those who must use this technology to gain access to secured areas of a
Web site. The traditional, Copy the letters/numbers you see in to the field
below captia effectively locks blind people out of areas of Web sites and
computer applications where this type of captia is used. Having a captia
that displays a text string that can be read by screen readers that asks a
question and provides one with an edit field to write their answer would
allow you to secure your forms and still make it possible for blind persons
using screen reading software to gain full access to protected areas of your
Web site. Since traditional captia information is presented as an OCR image
these cannot be read by screen readers, but text strings can.

If you're able to create a CF Captia I'd love to see the code myself and
would consider using it on my Web sites as well. I'll be following this
thread with interest.

Though I'm using captcha solutions for most of my main clients (and
server side too, thank you), I've been toying around with ideas on a
smaller site or two owned by myself just to see what would happen.

A very simple Does a cow moo, bark, howl, mew or whistle?
question with a blank to write in the correct answer with a simple cfif
after submission to check for the correct response has, for over a
month, stopped 100% of the form spams I was getting. I have an email
alert sent to myself just so I can see what's hitting the form, and it's
10 to 20 bots a day...

For a second test, I've placed a fake form in front of the real one
and hidden it with CSS. The form bots fill this one out, and never get
to the real form on the page. It's been 100% effective as well against
10 to 20 bots a day...

2007-04-16 Thread Peter Donahue
Good afternoon again everyone,

If you can set it up to where it produces a string of straight text, and
not text embedded within an image your captcha text/questions will then be
readable by screen reading solutions. Some companies have implemented audio
rendering of this text, but the audio is often a poor quality, and the site
is inaccessible to those who are both blind and deaf or have severe hearing
impairments. Doing this will also go a long way to ensuring that your Web
sites are Section 508 Compliant.

Coldfusion Installation, is local server needed?

2007-04-09 Thread Peter Donahue
Good afternoon everyone,

I use Studio MX which includes Dreamweaver and Coldfusion for creating
Web pages. I'm wondering if in order to install Coldfusion on my local
machine if this is an add-on for Studio MX or Eclipse in the case of
CFEclipse.

My impression is that one first needs to install server software such as
IIS, Appachi, or Blue Dragon for the Coldfusion module to run on one's
machine used for site development. I currently create my pages locally and
upload them to a remote server where they can be tested in the background
prior to making them available to the public. Again my question is assuming
I develop my pages in the manner described above can I install CF locally,
or do I first need to install server software before installing CF? I hope
this question makes sense. I received a version with Studio MX, but wasn't
sure if I could have installed it when I installed Studio MX, or if I would
first need to install IIS or another server program.

ColdFusion has a built in webserver that runs (by default) on port
8500. You can use this for your local/development work.

So while you don't -have- to install a separate web server, I like to
keep my dev and prod environments as similar as possible... so I

 Good afternoon everyone,

I use Studio MX which includes Dreamweaver and Coldfusion for creating
Web pages. I'm wondering if in order to install Coldfusion on my local
machine if this is an add-on for Studio MX or Eclipse in the case of
 CFEclipse.

My impression is that one first needs to install server software such
as
IIS, Appachi, or Blue Dragon for the Coldfusion module to run on one's
machine used for site development. I currently create my pages locally and
upload them to a remote server where they can be tested in the background
prior to making them available to the public. Again my question is
assuming
I develop my pages in the manner described above can I install CF locally,
or do I first need to install server software before installing CF? I hope
this question makes sense. I received a version with Studio MX, but wasn't
sure if I could have installed it when I installed Studio MX, or if I
would
first need to install IIS or another server program.

Re: Which version of vista plays well with CF7?

2007-03-28 Thread Peter Donahue
Hello Neil and listers,

Does that apply to all versions of Windows Vista? I'm wanting to
purchass a laptop and wanted to be sure that the version of Vista installed
on it will work with CF 7. Since I'm blind I would run Vista in Classic Mode
anyway to optimize it's performance with my screen reading software in
addition to maximize the performance of CF.

Once you have put it into Windows Classic mode, it's just like using XP.

Will,

I have it running nicely on Vista Business and Vista Ultimate. Like Sandy, I
too am liking Vista - it takes a little getting used to but then again, most
new things takes some getting used to.

We Have a New Host

2007-03-26 Thread Peter Donahue
Hello again everyone,

On Patty from Scotland's recommendation I purchased a Corvus Reseller
Account from:
http://www.yetihost.com

I'm now looking forward to rebuilding our organization's Web site and
being able to offer hosting to other affiliates and clients. By the way the
Corvus Reseller Plan sells for 179 pounds and 95 Pence. This converts to
$360.00 U.S. It's not a bad price considering that this account gives you a
deasent amount of disk space and allows you to host up to 20 individual
domains. And yes they offer CFMX 7 hosting. Now to begin developing new Cold
Fusion Web sites. Thanks again for the hosting suggestions and
recommendations. I'll have more questions in the coming days.

Introduction, Cheap Hosting

2007-03-25 Thread Peter Donahue
Good morning everyone,

Let me first begin by introducing myself before asking for hosting
recommendations based on my criteria. My name is Peter Donahue. My wife Mary
and I live in San Antonio Texas where I do Web development for a non-profit
organization and for several clients. My wife is a reservations agent for
Marriott Hotels. This past weekend we celebrated our 22nd wedding
anniversary and I turned the big 50 yesterday! This proves that you're never
too old to learn to program Web pages using any language including Cold
Fusion.

I had my first exposure to Cold Fusion in the fall of 2004 when I took
an Internet Commerce Course at Northwest Vista College. Since then I built
two CF Web sites one for the organization I referred to above, and the other
for a lady in Nebraska. This insidentally leads me in to the second part of
the message subject.

The afore-mentioned Web sites were hosted by a company out of Florida.
Without sufficient warning we received a notice advising us that the owners
of this particular hosting company were closing up shop and that we would
need to arrange for hosting with another provider. I paid for a years worth
of hosting from this outfit. They never offered us a refund for the unused
hosting period. They simply shut down their server, took our money and ran
leaving me very little time to locate another host for my Web sites.

As a result the lady in Nebrasca who paid top dollar for her account
with this company decided to manage her own Web site. The organization whose
site I'm responsible for maintaining has requested that I find another host
and get their site back up and running. The previous hosting company charged
us an annual fee of about $75.00. I have been searching for a new host for
this Web site and for possibly several other new sites I want to create
using CF, but have not found very many companies that meet our requirements
for a reasonable price. I'm willing to spend $200.00 a year for CF 7
Hosting, the ability to host multiple domains on a single account and for
several GB of disk space as our organization produces lots of audio and
video content for the Web. I've found several hosting companies that offer a
plan that would meet these requirements, but wanted to check here in case
you know of other hosting companies that offer similar plans. Dedicated
servers are kind of steep for me at this time given the loss of my paying
client who could help carry the cost of a dedicated server. That is
certainly an option for the future if I can secure enough cashflow to
sustain the monthly charges for such hosting. I've looked at www.godaddy.com
and don't believe they offer what I need in the way of a large amount of
disk space. Your hosting recommendations will be very much appreciated.

Let me conclude by apollogising if this request is somewhat OT. I'm just
getting back in to working with CF and need to find suitable hosting so I
can begin building CF sites once more. Thanks for your recommendations in
advance.

Peter Donahue
