[Chat] compost pick-up in CV
Hey folks - Just wanted to let you know that there is a new compost business in town that does weekly pick-ups of residential compost and it's coming to our neighborhood. In case you're interested, check out compostcab.com You can also deliver your compost yourself to Real Food Farm - but I know some people don't want to put their smelly organic matter inside their vehicle... [Chat] do you have a garden in CV?
Hey all - I just wanted to let folks know about a really great resource for gardeners - the Community Greening Resource Network (or CGRN, pronounce see green) has lots of free give-away days, workshops, tool libraries, events, and more. I have a garden in my backyard and have gotten lots of great things from being part of this network. Membership is only $20 and is available for home gardeners, school gardens, community gardens, or supporters. The membership year is just starting now and the annual summit is Jan. 31st (right in our neighborhood at 2640) so it seemed like a good time to spread the word to other CVers since I know a lot of you have beautiful gardens. You can find more info at: http://www.parksandpeople.org/greening/resource-network/membership/ Please feel free to pass it on. [Chat] bicycle found! missing one?
Hey folks - Last night we found a nice road bike stashed in the alleyway between a tree and our back gate in the Hunter St. alley just south of 28th Street. It does not belong to us or our next door neighbor so we're wondering if somebody may have stolen it and stashed it there?? It is safely tucked away in our garage now, but if anyone has any leads, please let us know. Re: [Chat] Chat Digest, Vol 120, Issue 12
In terms of attic insulation, we recently worked with HELP - Home Energy Loss Professionals - and some friends have had good experiences with Terra Logos. If you get a home energy audit (at the subsidized rate of $100) then you can get half the cost covered through a state rebate program. (Up to $2k of your $4k bill can be reimbursed for all kinds of home energy improvements including attic insulation and a whole lot more.) I definitely recommend taking advantage of this program!! In terms of a skylight or solar tube, we looked long and hard to get a skylight that was also a roof hatch for easy access from our bathroom. We ended up going with columbiaskylights.com - though if you don't need a hatch there are lots more options out there. In terms of installation, I highly recommend Tim Bittner - his company is Precision Roofing. He has done a lot of roofing for us on a couple properties as well as two different skylight installations. His number is (410) 235-5753 Hope that helps, -Maya On Mon, Jun 24, 2013 at 1:00 PM, wrote: > Send Chat mailing list submissions to > chat@charlesvillage.info > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > > http://charlesvillage.info/mailman/listinfo/chat_charlesvillage.info > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > chat-requ...@charlesvillage.info > > You can reach the person managing the list at > chat-ow...@charlesvillage.info > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of Chat digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > >1. recommendations, info on installation of solar tube/ skylight > and attic insulation/ exhaust fans ? [Chat] "tin box bumpout" explained
Christine et al - This is my perhaps inaccurate language to describe the old small closet-like boxes that stick out of the house in the back rooms of some of these Charles Village homes. The first CV house I lived in the closets had rusted out and that space had been cinderblocked over, but now we have some that are still (mostly) intact. Is this more clear?? I guess it's hard to describe. They are about 5' tall by 3' wide by 1' wide (roughly) and stick out from the house. Ours are metal... Anyway, looking for ideas on how to insulate them. [Chat] ultra-local Community Supported Agriculture
Hey Charles Village Chat, Just wanted to pass along this info. I worked at Real Food Farm last year and the quality of the CSA produce was exceptional. All natural, ultra-local. Read on for more info and feel free to get in touch if you have any questions. Real Food Farm, Civic Works' urban farm in Clifton Park in East Baltimore, is getting ready for a CSA season. Read on for more pertinent information! We’re currently accepting applications! We’re increasing the number of shares from last year, but are expecting high demand, so don’t hesitate – here’s the application and agreement<http://www.realfoodfarm.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/CSAAppandAgreement2012.pdf>. [Prices, etc. will be updated on the application shortly, thanks for your patience.] What is a CSA? A CSA is *community supported agriculture* (we call it CITY supported, since we’re right here in Baltimore City). In a CSA program, members sign up and pay one lump sum at the beginning of the year to receive a batch of produce for a full growing season. Its a subscription service, adapted for agriculture. Why join a CSA? CSA members help farmers by: - providing funds for seeds, tools, and other materials after a long winter without much revenue - CSAs guarantee sales in a risky growing climate, allowing consumers to share in seasonal variances – the risks and rewards! Meanwhile farmers guarantee CSA members: - Will receive a batch of produce at an affordable rate each week, with seasonal choices including both staples (tomatoes, salad mix) and surprises (peanuts? sunchokes?) - Members receive weekly tips including recipes and stories from the farm. Prices & Details: This is Real Food Farm’s second season. It runs for 22 weeks – May to September. Payment is due by March 15, 2011. Pick-up is available at: Real Food Farm, Lake Montebello Market, and other sites TBD (based on demand). A full share includes 6-8 items per week, $440. A half share includes 3-4 items per week, $235. (After March 15, payment goes up to $455 & $250 ) *For SNAP & WIC Members: * 20% OFF! There’s a $50 deposit at start of season, with weekly installment payments. Full deposit will be returned at end of season with full participation. Full Share Reduced: $352 ($16/week) *** Half Share Reduced: $188 ($8.50/week) (After March 15, payment goes up to $367 & $195). How to Apply: *Step 1: Pick a share that works for you* *Step 2: Apply for membership by checking to see if there are still slots available – email us or call, and read the agreement. * *Step 3: Send in this application<http://www.realfoodfarm.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/CSAAppandAgreement2012.pdf>and check made payable to Real Food Farm.
