If you want some pictures of an install of a vertical windlass with a capstan
let me know I’ll shoot you some pics. Have to cut a hole in locker lid for
capstan. I’ve used it to send daughters and son in-laws up the mast.

Re: Stus-List 34+ traveller relocate

2020-06-02 Thread Charlie Nelson via CnC-List
FWIW, my 1995 36XL/kcb came with the traveler mounted just forward of the
binnacle and was originally a Lewmar model. For reasons that I no longer
remember, I switched the Lewmar out for a Harken with a windward sheeting car
(that may have been the reason!).
During the install (done by Layline on-board), I didn't notice anything special
about any reinforcements beneath the traveler--just mounted to the aft end of
the cockpit seats with lots of bolts and big washers. The traveler spans the
cockpit space and is held only by about a 1 foot length on each side screwed
through the seat structure.
Since the lever arm on the boom is longer (compared to a traveler mounted
forward) the forces on the traveler will be reduced from a more forward
location.

I just found this image of a 34+ that was sold in Montreal, so somebody has one
with end boom sheeting!

https://kingstonyachtsales.com/boat_listing.php?id=693

Hmm. That’s a thought. I hadn’t considered mounting it between the seating. It
shortens the traveler somewhat, but still might be better than where it
currently is. A couple of customer brackets, and backing plates. Does that
setup have some sort of attachment to the pedestal guard? It looks like it buts
right up against it.

Glen

Our traveler is just forward of the binnacle. I think it was a custom factory
job. Seems solid but I have no idea if the parts where it is anchored were
reenforced or not.

Looking for guidance. Has anyone moved the traveler on a 34+ aft to the
binnacle area? The boom is almost 15? long, and the traveler is only 5? from
the mast, giving horrible purchase upwind. Looking to move it closer to end
boom sheeting, but worried about structural integrity to support the traveler.

How long did you leave the PB Blaster before trying?  A mechanic once told me
that when changing hub assemblies they put vehicle on hoist and spray the areas
last thing before going home for the night and then work on it the next
morning.  Having replaced right and left front wheel hubs on my former
Silverado using that method on one side and not waiting many hours on the other
I can attest to this trick being helpful.

PS.  Rob … I put in the launch order.  Am almost exactly 2 months behind

it with 3M vhb tape and seal it with the Dow corning 795 black silicone.  The
tricky part is getting the old brown adhesive off the gel coat. It looks like
it's going to pull up some of the gelcoat so there will be some needed repair.

Subject: Stus-List New Windows 1987 MKiii

I just purchased two new windowsfrom Tony at Hatchmasters. I believe it was
just under $800. My wife and I have put in 10 hours trying to remove old
adhesive. I still have a way to go, and then to repair the multiple chips that
came out with the adhesive. I plan on using the 3M tape that was discussed a
while ago. Any secrets to removing the old dried adhesive. I have been mildly
successful with triangular grinding blade on my Fein. Still can't get it all.
Open to suggestions.

Stus-List 34+ traveller relocate

2020-06-02 Thread Glen Dickson via CnC-List
Looking for guidance. Has anyone moved the traveler on a 34+ aft to the
binnacle area? The boom is almost 15’ long, and the traveler is only 5’ from
the mast, giving horrible purchase upwind. Looking to move it closer to end
boom sheeting, but worried about structural integrity to support the traveler.

Listers,

Long ago, in the beforetime, there was a posting by a C’er who installed a
shelf and windless inside his anchor locker - and I think it was on a 37+,
though not positive about the boat.

Would love to see photos and info about installation, materials and windless

Re: Stus-List Strap Hinge for Lazarette

2020-06-02 Thread Al Serrato via CnC-List
This is what I ended up ordering -
GooMeng 6" x 1.2" 316 Stainless Steel Marine Boat Strap Hinges (1 Pair) - from
Amazon.

I realized that I needed to search for 6 inch (total length) rather than 3 inch
stainless steel boat strap hinges. This looks like it will be close enough if
not an exact match.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: Stus-List Ground wires

2020-06-02 Thread Shawn Wright via CnC-List
Possibly a bonding wire for the strut or a zinc to be hung off the stern?
Our 35 at one time had a wire to the strut bolts. It now has a wire leading
to a post on the aft deck, where I hang a large zinc over the stern
(attached via a wing nut to the post) while at dock or anchor. C
recommended this extra zinc in a document I got with the boat, and many
other boats in our club do the same.

Can you share a photo of them? Probably different than those on my 35-2,
but I wouldn't mind replacing them with something a bit more robust. I have
seen mine under the Seadog name, and they are ok, but one is bent slightly,
so they could be a bit stronger. It probably doesn't help that the locker
lids don't fit all that well, so there is a lot of force on the hinges. I
am trying to determine how best to support the lids, instead of having them
just rest on the fiberglass.

Full disclosure – I am a Yacht Broker…

Hopefully, your Agreement of Sale is the standard YBAA form and your broker has
added a few “extra” conditions beyond a survey. I always include an optional
mechanical survey so that should you need to really dig into the engine, you
can. Also as Joe indicated, a rigging inspection/survey should also be called
out if desired.

The reason for these additional “call-outs” is that there is always the
potential for at least some disassembly (taking out injectors to view) and
without the wording, the seller and their broker can legitimately refuse.

The good things about the YBAA agreement is that you are not committed until
you sign an Acceptance of Vessel. Until it is signed, you can walk away and
get your deposit back (less any costs that you are responsible for and haven’t
paid such as the haul-out for the survey).

If I can help in anyway, drop me a note off-line

You will need a rigger and a diesel mechanic for a thorough survey. For a
quick engine check, make sure the engine starts and runs normally and the oil
is just oil, no coolant mixed in.

Specific to a Landfall 38, you might want to crawl back by the fuel tank and
make sure there is no diesel seeping out of it.

Stus-List Ground wires

2020-06-02 Thread Bruce Whitmore via CnC-List
Hello all,
Last week there was a good exchange on ground wires, and it came at a good time
as I was having issues with the ground wire leading from my 12 volt panel, and
I ended up grounding all the batteries, and the panel to a single spot in the
engine compartment and running 1 ground to the engine.  Overall, it is much
cleaner than the multiple wires that had been attached to the engine before.
Now to the issue... I found 2 additional ground wires, one green and one black,
both about 8 gauge wire that were attached to the engine.  The wires then run
into an electrical tape wrapped wiring harness. We have a Yanmar 3JH2E, and the
manual is not very helpful identifying the wires.   They wires are corroded on
the inside and should be replaced.  Before I go trying to tear off the tape and
track where the wires are going, does anyone have a good idea what they might
be for?

I am thinking that one might be for the alternator, though the wires leading to
it have been painted all the same color by someone who apparently overhauled
the engine so there's some temporary issue identifying it.  I have no idea what
the other one might be, other than I keep thinking about the fuel tank ground
(but the wire seems way oversized for such a purpose).
Any ideas before I tear the rest of the way into this?
Thank you!

I've had good luck with a hand impact driver. Just be sure you hold it tight
to the screw head while you whack it or you'll mess up the screw head.

Used to work on motorcycles a lot. Hand impact driver was my best friend.
