For what it is worth, Practical Sailor has a low opinion of stainless steel
on your ground tackle; Particularly when mixed with the other metals.

Beware there are different ratings of shackles despite the same size. As I
recall a class 'B' is a higher rating. For a 3/8ths shackle the load
rating is 2 tons. For a normal class 'A' the rating is 1 ton.

My chain is galvanized and so is the shackle and so is the anchor.

If the shackle rubs the zinc off the end link, I would just cut it off
and use the next one.

Re: Stus-List Anchor links.

2017-10-19 Thread Jim Watts via CnC-List
For some reason, the first link connecting to the rope seems to get way
more corroded than any other part of the chain/rode assembly, possibly
because it is buried in the chain locker with a bunch of salty wet rope.
The swivel end was never a problem on my setup. Until the swivel itself
broke and dropped a nice 35-lb Delta to the bottom in 40 feet of water...
The best thing would be to see if there is an issue after a few months with
a galvanized shackle. At least that end is usually easy to keep track of,
especially if the anchor lives on a roller. Having that shackle on deck
also allows it to be rinsed with fresh water regularly.

I have been doing that for years. I found the back splice easier to do than the
splice where the anchor line continues along the chain weaving in and out, that
one is a bit more effort.

If it is I can put a galvanized shackle, but where the chain attached too the
anchor is a stainless mantus swivel, so the issue would be the same.
What do I do besides all stainless chain? If that is possible.
