This morning I found a female Williamson's Sapsucker at Lakeside Cemetery in
Canon City. This is another location that usually hosts wintering
sapsuckers and I had found fresh sapwells in several pine trees earlier this
week. I am am unsure if this is another sapsucker or possibly the one I
At our backyard feeders this morning we had all the usual suspects:
Dark-eyed Juncos
American Goldfinches
Mountain and Black-capped Chickadees
3 Blue Jays
Spotted Towhee
Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers
Plus much to our delight 40+ Pinyon Jays just arrived! This is the earliest
we have ever recorded
Took a nice walk after work yesterday and heard a distinctive 'cheep cheep
cheep' from up high. Reminded me of the Black Hills. Turned out to be a male
red crossbill at the apex of a leafless tree glowing in the late day sun.
Just one. Couldn't tell what type it was. This was in the Aberdeen
COBirders,
Larry Semo just called and he found a probably Tundra Swan at Standley Lake.
The bird was mostly sleeping on the north side of the lake. For directions see
number 4 on the Jefferson county page:

SeEtta et al.,
Your Red-tailed is a Harlan's, not a Western. Or some derivation of both.
Notice the odd tail pattern, gray at the base with only a few bits of red near
the tip. Also, the white mottling on the breast, throat and face is good for
Harlan's. A Rufous-morph Western usually has a
Larry and I must have missed each other. I also saw the Tundra Swan
from the south side as it was swimming along the north shore at about
10:15. After scanning and seeing 5 common loons, 525 western grebes,
30 canvasbacks, and other assorted waterfowl, I drove to the north
side. By the time I got

Dear OBNTer,
I’m contacting you about your travels to the Black Hills in South Dakota to see

Hey again!
So I followed the sandpiper trail (I think that's what it's called)
to the observation spot on the west end of the resevoir and there is a
Eurasian Wigeon amongst some Mallards and American Wigeons! He stands
out like a sore thumb.
Thanks

The best viewing area for the Tundra Swan in still the North side as
of about 4PM. In the two hours I spent at Standley Lake today, the
swan never strayed too far south. The highlight from the south end
was a Red-breasted Merganser. Best loon-viewing is the NW corner.
There were at least 5
Diana King saw the Curve-billed Thrasher at the west feeder area at the back of
the Red Rocks Trading Post at about 3:03 this afternoon. It stayed for only 4
minutes and was not calling.

Clover Basin - totally empty!
Cheri Orwig and I went to Fossil Creek Reservoir in search of the Eurasian

Folks- adding to the already strong showing of Pacific Loons this fall was
another at Boulder Reservoir this evening. It was actively feeding in the

Adding to my post-work loon tally was a Common Loon at Lagerman Reservoir west

At about 2:30 this afternoon, November 5, I observed a first-fall female
Blackburnian Warbler working the Siberian Elms all around the black swamp at
Last Chance (Washington County). It wasn't the dullest they can be (the upper
breast/lower throat had a golden glow to it when viewed head-on)
