Joan,
Your snapshots are not as bad as you think! Isn't it fun to see and
learn about all the different birds that come to our feeders? We
share a telephone pre-fix; are you as far south as La Veta?
Your new woodpecker is a Hairy Woodpecker; a bird that looks so much
like the little Downy,
Hi all:
I have posted the solution to last week's Mr. Bill Mystery Quiz

Good Morning All,
Threw out some seed at the feeders at the Red Rocks Trading post this
morning(very quiet peaceful with the light snow fog). Around 8
a.m. the Golden-crowned Sparrow and 1st year Harris's Sparrow showed
up. Yesterday morning the Curve-billed Thrasher was present. Too
I received a report from Mark P (Boulder) of Short-eared Owls
continuing at WCR 48, Latham Reservoir. Two photos here:

If you do African birds there are many photos looking for ID help (a
friend of mine at work recently took a trip--non-birder).
Thanks

Had Western Bluebirds back yesterday among the multitude of Mountain
Bluebirds that have been back for a few weeks. Gray-headed Juncos are
really singing and bluebirds were checking out nest boxes. It is that

Hi all:
I have a few comments about the bird, but first the usual caveats when talking
about hybrids, particularly dabbling ducks.
Caveat #1: When discussing the putative parent species of any hybrid, it should
be taken as given that these parent species are presumed, as without genetic
This weekend was the first annual Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory
Ranch Trip which was auctioned off last August at the 2010 RMBO

Led by Seth Gallagher, Christine Sibona and I birded 6 counties in SE Colorado.
Saturday we visited 2 Lesser-prairie Chicken leks in Prowers County.
We saw
Greetings All,
Tony's detailed discussion is most excellent.
To me, there is some buff-orange (like an Am Wigeon) on the anterior sides,
mimicking nicely the pattern in some Eur x Am Wigeon hybrids and Mallard x Am
Wigeon hybrids. I think this should pretty much eliminate N Pintail as a

I had my first oriantha WC Sparrows today. They were along the ditch across the
street from the (county?) park on the south side. Near a dairy on the N side of
the reservoir, I had my first YH Blackbirds of the spring (12) and BH Cowbirds
(7). On the reservoir, there were
Greetings All,
Jerry Ligouri has identified the Union Reservoir RTHA mentioned in my last post
as a Krider's. It has a typical Krider's tail, and the underparts are quite
Krider's like. The patagial bar is atypically prominent. The bird was just
north of the pay-to-enter park (County?) on the
A google search for wigeon x teal brought this up:

Seen in NV in the spring of 2007. I think the interesting thing is that this
could be the same individual, not that it's arguably the same hybrid combo.

Highlights of today's birding trip to Cherry Creek State Park includes
a trifecta of teal; Blue-winged, Green-winged and Cinnamon. We
stopped in at the Prairie Loop bird observation area and were
delighted to see American Avocet, Greater Yellow-legs, Semipalmated
Plover, Baird's Sandpiper,
(this heading is abbreviated so that scanning your messages gives the intent
of this message, without having to open it)
At 5:40 PM a committee (that's one of the accepted names) of 19 turkey
vultures sailed headed northwest over my house near Orchard and Colorado

Greetings All,
I guess that I am still learning my directions.
Egads.
The Krider's RT Hawk was just SOUTH of the park on the SOUTH side of Union
Reservoir.
