Many years ago in Wyoming I observed Gray Jays using a similar technique as the
crows attacking Red-winged nests. Their target was a Yellow-rumped Warbler
nest. One bird flew near the nest and was chased by the parent warblers. The
other waited and when the coast was clear snatched

Still 1 White-rumped Sandpiper at the south end of Spring Park reservoir, El
Jebel this morning (Saturday) showing well. Also a pair of Wilson's
Phalaropes, a (White-faced) Ibis and the basic plumaged Common Loon still.
At the north end of the reservoir, 13 more (White-faced)
Biked Island Grove to 25th Ave, few miles. Thirty-one species, highlights
are:
Worm-eating Warbler (where trail turns due north)
Chimney Swift (sitting on fence)
Blue Grosbeak

This morning at Black Bear Hollow, the park on the south side of Hwy 66 as you
enter Lyons, there was an EASTERN PHOEBE singing away near a bridge. I would
not be surprised if it is nesting. The exact spot is the bridge of McConnell, s
of Hwy 66.
Along Apple Valley Road, just
Saturday a.m., a photographer, myself and another birder observed a
snake that was probably either a Bull Snake or Rat Snake in a
coniferous tree feasting on newly hatched Pygmy Nuthatches. We
actually saw the snake with an open mouth, nestling hanging partially
out and then later fully ingesting
A very quiet day of birding in San Luis Valley. While the San Luis Lake was
very low there were 2 Franklin's Gulls present and numerous Sage Thrashers

Nine of us had a great time on a CFO/TNC outing at the Brett Gray Ranch,
Lincoln County, Friday-Saturday, June 1st-2nd. Highlight was a marvelous

I did my BBS route which starts about 14 miles north of Nunn on hwy 85 and
heads west through the Pawnee Experimental Range and then the National
Grassland. Bird numbers were WAY low. I usually get between 400-600 Lark
Buntings on this route. Yesterday I had 38. Only a single Cassin's
