About 2500 Canada and Cackling Geese were in a pasture at the corner of
Monarch Road and Hwy 119 in Niwot on Sunday 11/16 (Boulder County). Among
them was one cute little Ross's Goose!

In the CO Breeding Bird Atlas I(1998) Fox Sparrows were observed in at least
2 blocks in Custer County. I'd appreciate knowing the dates of these
observations and dates in any counties adjacent to Pueblo for the 2nd BBA
survey. These records could represent the 1st summer records in the
Around Noon today Rick Taylor, Bill Maynard, another birder who's name I
already forgot and I observed White Wing, Black and Surf Scoters near the
swim beach. The only open water is close to the shore so the viewing is
excellent.

This morning there was a Juv. (or maybe Fem.) Surf Scoter at the Valco
Pond west of Mackenzie Ave in Canon City. It was with the numerous ducks,
geese, etc. that have been here since the cold snap.
Around noon, a huge flock of hundreds of geese descended en masse on the
east Valco Pond.
All,
Thanks to Robb for posting. If you want a close study of different scoter
species of differing ages, I recommend a trip to Prospect Lake, part of
Memorial Park in Colorado Springs (accessible via Union Blvd). Especially good
is the open water near the swim beach on the western
I got a call this morning from Rachel Hopper who had located an adult female
White-winged Scoter on Douglas Reservoir in northern Larimer County (nw of the
intersection of 60 and 15RDs). Once there I located the scoter, and a female
Long-tailed Duck, which had apparently been seen late last
I posted a couple of long distance photos of the Scoters

From several of the previous posts, it sounds like some northern waterbirds
rode the winds into Colorado last night. Should be an exciting next few
days.

Minor revision to my post - I misidentified the swan as a Trump, but it is
actually a juvenile Tundra (I forgot they could have disproportionately
large bills as juveniles too).
Sorry for anyone that was looking for a Trump

This is almost a negative update. John Martin Reservoir (Bent County)
remained 50 percent open yesterday, but when the wind died down last night,
the reservoir flash froze. There are still many small holes in the ice full
of birds, but as of today, the reservoir is approximately 98
I photographed a harrier today along the road that goes around the southwestern
corner of Douglas Reservoir today. I photographed it just because it allowed
me to, a unusual thing in my experience with perched harriers. Upon
examination of the photos, it appears to be a melanistic or
With the weather turning a balmy 31 degrees yesterday morning I ventured
down Tunnel Drive where I found a likely pair of Rufous-crowned Sparrows
and got some very nice photos of them. I have uploaded those photos onto
my Birds and Nature blog. http://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/
