We have cranes on the ground for the third night. Thursday we had 65 spend the
night and leave about 8:30 am. Friday was our big night with cranes arriving
at 4 pm and not leaving until 10am today. Today we had almost given up when a
large flight landed and is now settled for the night. I
COBirders,
I made a quick stop at Big Johnson reservoir around midday today and found a
RED-NECKED GREBE in the "northeast" corner of the reservoir. It was not really
associating with anything else. Most of the other large grebes were in the
"northwest" corner. Nothing else of real note but
Kathy Mihm-Dunning and I headed out east to see if ANY migrants were about.
Well there WERE some migrants at every stop.
Flagler SWA:
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - 1
Eastern Phoebe - 1
Blue-headed Vireo - 1
Winter Wren - 1
American Robin - 0, NONE! Zilch!
Hi all,
4-5 large waves of Sandhill Cranes just passed by our house near the SW corner
of Cherry Creek State Park. Quite a glorious sight. They were headed in a
southeast direction.
Happy migration!

Todd, these birds are just going over us now, about 5-600 as ou said, and
boomeranging off any thermals that they find. So with all the circling they
came SW instead, and reached the Lagerman area in a lazy half hour. As the
groups break up in the thermals and then rejoin in Vs, they make a

Hi COBirders,
A good arrival of sparrows and Ruby-crowned Kinglets this morning at Clear
Spring Ranch. Best was my third White-throated Sparrow of the week. Also a
couple of Sandhill Cranes flew over - but not hundreds, this morning.
Last day for my banding season is tomorrow.
Rough total for
Hi, all.
Hannah Floyd is bombarding me with texts and photos of cranes flying over
Boulder County. She's at or near the ballfields at 47th and
Foothills/Diagonal. If you're in downtown Boulder, they're up there RIGHT
NOW.

I left home at dawn and spent all morning in eastern Boulder County trying in
vain to find Sandhill Cranes. Ted Floyd in the field and Cheryl at home had to
listen to my whining about it. Then, back home at 1 pm, Cheryl yelled from our
yard, "David, I hear birds!!" I estimated about 300 seen
Saw about 100 cranes flying south-southeast over the Boulder Humane Society
(~Arapahoe & 55th) at about noon today. Arriving home near the 1st bank
center in Broomfield just now, watched a flock of about 100 catching a
thermal overhead! Maybe the same group. Continued heading south. So cool!

Ah. At last. They're over Lafayette, eastern Boulder County, right now.

CoBirders,
I observed a juvenile Glossy/White-faced Ibis this morning at Cottonwood
Marsh in Boulder County. The bird appeared overall dark to me, with no
noticeable white marks on the face, grayish bill and legs. At that point a
hunter's gun flushed the bird along with many ducks and a few
Initially I was leaning to White-faced Ibis ID, but after studying my photos
and field guides I'm leaning to Glossy but not sure. Before I read Peter
Burke's most recent email, I too had changed my eBird report from White-faced
to White-faced/Glossy. I just don't know. I don't know if my
Friday 10-16 I visited Chico Basin Ranch (El Paso Co, Pueblo Co), did not
see anything resembling reported Spraque's Pipits but had some birds of
interest: A single Bufflehead and flocks of McCown's Longspurs at the lake
S of headquarters, two Great Horned Owls and a couple of weak-sounding
Ibis (presumably White-faced) at Cottonwood Marsh, Walden Ponds this morning.
Late migrant. Photographed.

Between 11 am and 11:50 Sally Swain and I observed four Sandhill Crane
flocks totally a conservative 700 birds.. We had plenty of time to do
counts as each flock circled numerous times above the ridgeline by the
parking area. So sweet. Carl Starace,Niwot

About 300 circling very high up over Columbine neighborhoods now! A pair of
