In my post today about Weld County, I misidentified a spider found impaled by a
loggerhead shrike on GR96 w of Weld CR77. I appreciate Janeal Thompson
questioning my ID and we figured it out over the phone. I called the spider a
wolf spider in the family Lycosidae. In reality, the spider is
To throw some fuel onto the "which swift was it?" fire, here is the last
four days of 850mb winds, plus tomorrow's winds as well (April 23). These
winds are near the surface here in Colorado, but about 1 - 1.5km above the
ground in other closer to sea level locations. This is every three hours
In addition to Ted and Andy's reports of possible Vaux's Swifts, I have
received two other alerts from eBird of Chaetura swifts in the last two
days. The low clouds that smothered much of the front range today are
supposed to linger into the early-mid morning tomorrow in at least Denver
and
Today was the first day of Spring banding at Chico Basin Ranch. It was a
bit chilly and threatened to rain but we only felt a few drops. We set up
the site and had nets open for about 3 hours in the late morning. In total
we banded 19 birds of 9 species:
Ruby-crowned Kinglet: 2
Orange-crowned
Really Interesting. Swallows must be pooling in Pueblo before busting
north.
I birded a number of ponds, bodies of water last sat/sun in Colorado
Springs - 4 Barn Swallows at Fountain Creek Nature Center. Not a swallow
elsewhere.

I write as a public service to the presumed hordes that will soon descend upon
southeast CO. There are signs stating that road work will begin on the highway

Hello all
Ted's swift report got me to thinking about early swifts in my personal
records. I looked back through my records for Chimney Swift in Boulder County
and the earliest one I have is 23 March 1977! My notes indicate the bird was
calling but I have no recollection of this sighting. I

Hi all
Super group of birders Saturday for the trip. Great weather as well. We had
a spectacular showing by a unexpected Short-eared Owl. We were slowly
crawling Weld CR 41 btw 100/102 when it flushed from Rabbitbrush alongside
the road. It perched low in Rabbitbrush about 50 feet from my car

Interestingly enough, I also had Chaetura swifts (two of them) fly across
highway 34 in eastern Morgan County yesterday afternoon. At the time I
thought it was cool to see Chimney Swifts migrating, then after about a
minute I remembered that, despite the warm weather, it was still
mid-April.
PAWR continues in the same location. Between 63rd and Robinson Pl.

Hello, everybody.
Yesterday evening, Easter Sunday, Apr. 21, I saw a small swift over Waneka
Lake, Boulder County, that I thought was good for Vaux swift. I heard it
briefly, and it sure didn't sound like a chimney swift. However, I haven't
had much experience with listening to Vaux swifts
