Colorado Springs,
I recently posted to COBIRDS an invite to visit my website to view the
images of Snow Geese I took at Bosque Del Apache. From many that had
visited I received a fair number of emails. One of them was asking that I
would respond back to them. Unfortunately, I deleted that batch and emptied

In Prospect Park in Wheat Ridge there is a Mandarin hanging out with and
pursuing a female Mallard. It typically has been seen in Prospect lake.

In the middle of August I traveled to Alaska for two weeks. During the first
week I stayed at my brother-in-law's cabin on an island in a small lake in
Two Lakes where I was able to observe and photograph a group of loons
(around 9), as well as a older baby. It was not uncommon for them to swim
I have loaded some recent images from Mt Evans of a Ptarmigan. It was
located at the last switchback just before Summit Lake as you are coming
down. Park in the pull-off just at the bend and climb over the boulders to
the old road and walk down it looking carefully for them on the left. I got

I had a treat at Glen Eyrie the other day when I was able to watch and
photograph a RT Haw bath in a creek. It seemed totally oblivious to the
people walking by. Other than on the ground for food reasons, it has been a
rarity for me to see them there. So for me this was an exceptional
opportunity.
A recent trip to Mt Evans netted some shots of a Ptarmigan. There was a pair
together. I was not able to capture any images of the second one. I found
them just a the tree line ends by the Nature Center/bathrooms. Additionally,
I finally captured some images of a pair of Dippers that were at the
I have uploaded new images to my website. Except for the Osprey and turkeys,
most of the were taken at the city park in Denver (where the zoo is

my site and viewing my images.
I just saw a HB leave my feeder tonight. There was not enough light to
accurately ID it but I believe from the size it may have been a BT. I live
in the Rockrimmon area (foothills) of Colorado Springs just south of the AF
Academy.

Has anyone found the snowy owl lately? Both Friday and this morning, an
extensive search was made for it and zippo! I am wondering if this cold snap
provided it the basis for returning home? If that is the case, hopefully it
will be successful.

It was a beautiful morning for seeing and Photographing the Snowy. The sun
was perfect and so was the sky. I can't say my photographic skills were
working at optimal today but I did manage to come away with a few images
that I considered to be keepers.
The ones take over the last 3-4 days are
I have uploaded to my New Images album recent photos of the Snowy, a Prairie
Falcon, and a Golden Eagle. The falcon had chased after the snowy, but it
seemed as though it was somewhat at a half-hearted pace based on what I have
seen them do in the past. Eventually the falcon abandoned the pursiot
I went to check out the snowy this morning about 9 AM. It was snowing fairly
hard and visibility was low. I found him on one of his usually house
perches. About 9:30 he flew north. I looked for about a ½ hour but was
unable to relocate him. With the snow on the ground he could have seen

The intent of this email is not to spark a debate regarding whether it is
ethical or not to feed predatory birds. My sole purpose is to clarify a
miscommunication to some people visiting the snowy and possibly in a COBIRD
email that the activity was illegal. Since then I have done some further

I would agree, the owl did not seem to exhibit any problems flying or
navigating this morning while hunting or moving from one spot to the next.
On Saturday evening, I saw it capture some large rodent without any apparent
difficulty. Additionally, Aaron Flohrs (DOW District Wildlife Manager)
I have uploaded new images to my website of the snowy owl taken over the

The following link will take you to my web site that presents two images of
exactly what Tom Wilberding's email yesterday was addressing with regards to
all of us making respectful choices when visiting the owl. Essentially, I
had been there since early morning. Anyone that visited the bird while
SeEtta makes many valid points here. I personally feel that they can be
easily generalized to being applicable to observing and photographing all
wildlife, not just birds. As I thought about it, the more I questioned the
problem as a basis of lack of education or even skill level. It is true
