[cobirds] Black Phoebes, Eastern Phoebes, Turkey Vultures and Yellow-rumped Warblers in Canon City

2017-03-22 Thread SeEttaM .
I have one pair of Black Phoebes that are regularly foraging between Sell's
Lake and the Arkansas River for the past 6 days. I saw a single Black
Phoebe on the river two weeks ago but did not refind it. This pair often
forages near each other. I got a couple of reasonable photos of one of
them including one with a nice tail spread that I have uploaded to my Birds
and Nature blog
.

I also found a pair of Eastern Phoebes returning to a nest site used every
year for past several years. The nest site is very vulnerable due to it's
location.

I spotted my first Turkey Vultures of the year 2 nights ago but have not
seen them since. There were only 3 or 4 birds in the group.

Yellow-rumped Warblers have been migrating through Canon City for the past
several days, just small numbers of them so far.

Also got photos of a couple of Wilson's Snipe that are on my Birds and
Nature blog.

[cobirds] Bluebird Bonanza - Douglas

2017-03-22 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
We walked the Walker Trail again this morning -- the Eastern Phoebe has staked
out the section under the Colo. 86 bridge (at least today).

In the first big cottonwood grove we heard a sweet warble that Urling figured
out: an Eastern Bluebird. The grove had two Eastern Bluebirds flitting around,
and 3 (silent) Mountain Bluebirds, for at least an hour. Otherwise, the same
contingent as yesterday. Meadowlarks & Song Sparrows House Finches singing.

Observation start time: 07:45:00
Observation end time: 14:00:00
Total observation time: 6.25 hours

Official Counter:Roger Rouch

Observers:Bill Wuerthele

Visitors:
Several hikers stopped by briefly to ask about things and many commented on
seeing some raptors along their hike. A couple from West Virginia stopped
to talk and watch. The gentleman had a nice camera and telephoto lens and
pictures of a hawk that looked probably like Ferruginous on the small LCD
camera screen and were taken south of the our site along the trail. (Not
seen or counted by us).

Weather:
A mild day with temps rising from about 40 f to the low 60's with a light
wind around 2 Bft. from the E and SE. Moderate ground level haze with
little hindrance to observation. As the day progressed, light haze also
developed to ridge line height with observations slightly obscured.

Raptor Observations:
Highlights included two Ferruginous Hawks with bright white wing panels and
tail that passed below eye level between the Green Mountain ridge and Dino
ridge. A Harlan's passed directly over the observation platform about
mid-day. There was a crazy flurry of local and migrating Red-tailed
activity mid to late morning along the west ridges mostly not far above
tree height with some below ridge and others disappearing behind the ridge.
At one time seven Red-tailed swirled together with five peeling off to
migrate and two locals returning to their territory. It's likely a few or
more slipped by the observers during this active time.

Non-raptor Observations:
Three Sandhill Cranes circled fairly low (at least low for Sandhills) just
south of the platform. Also, Spotted Towhee, Black-billed Magpie, Common
Raven, American Crow, Bushtit, Woodhouse's Scrub-jay, Northern Flicker,
American Robin, Townsend's Solitaire, Western Meadowlark.

Predictions:
Approaching front(s) could encourage more good raptor activity.

Report submitted by Bird Conservancy of the Rockies
(jeff.bi...@birdconservancy.org)
Dinosaur Ridge information may be found at:
http://www.birdconservancy.org/

Site Description:
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is
the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or
Dusky Grouse. Birders are always welcome.
The hawkwatch is generally staffed by volunteers from Bird Conservancy of
the Rockies from about 9 AM to around 3 PM from March 1st to May

[cobirds] Cherry Creek SP--Those ?? gulls

2017-03-22 Thread ROBERT RIGHTER
Hi:

The water was calm on Cherry Creek SP, not even a wave, just the small
assortment of the usual ducks, so I decided to scope those annoying-looking
gulls standing on the logs at the marina, adjacent to the dam in the northwest
corner.
There were about 5-7 Herring Gulls and many, many adult Ring-bills and on one
log was a smaller cluster of ?? gulls consisting of either first summer plumage
Ring-bills or second winter California Gulls transitioning to a third or adult
winter type plumage. Determining mantle color was hopeless as any small shift
in position a dark mantle gull would turn into lighter mantled gull and the
same was for a smaller gull shuffling on the log, would suddenly change into
a larger one. The leg colors were neither yellow or pink just various shades of
in between tones. Occasionally some would flap their wings and fly in circles
screaming and shouting and return to the log. The upper tail consistently
showed a thin, dark band at the end of the tail. The field guides seem to
suggest that while it is possible for the California Gull, in latter stages of
molt, so show this feature it would be more usual for the Ring-bills to show
this thin dark band at tail end, So I concluded those gulls were probably
Ring-bills??

As I’ve learned the hard way there is nothing wrong with skipping those gulls
at the marina and continuing down the road to watch colorful ducks dabbling in
the smaller ponds.

[cobirds] Bird Sounds Meet Artificial Intelligence

2017-03-22 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

Someone mentioned this site today to me--for those who haven't it is an
interesting site. My advice to learn about project? Click "About This
Project" a short video introducing you to Google and Cornell project.

On the main page full of bird sound sonographs--think the (one of) aim of
the project was to group similar bird sounds closest to each other. Click
one graph then click its neighbors.

Thanks

[cobirds] Fremont County Yesterday

2017-03-22 Thread 'Dan Stringer' via Colorado Birds
Yesterday 3-21-17 I went with Michael Keissig down to Fremont County, it
was interesting and productive. Highlights at Brush Hollow Reservoir (both
east and west entrance) were Pinyon Jay, Canyon Towhee, Western
Bluebirds, Mountain Bluebirds, Scaled Quail, and Juniper Titmouse.
Highlights in Canon City, in addition to meeting Rich Miller, were Canyon
Wren, Eastern Phoebe, Black Phoebe (also several Say's Phoebe), a close
flyover Cooper's Hawk, and previously reported Western Screech-Owl. Did not
find Rufous-crowned Sparrow. We searched extensively for Sapsuckers without
seeing any, with several years data on my trips to the area I seem to find
more sapsuckers in January and February than in spring/summer/fall. In
Penrose we saw Wild Turkeys, Blue-winged Teal, an occupied Great Blue Heron
Rookery, and a fine-looking Lincoln's Sparrow. On I-25 north of Colorado
Springs, three Sandhill Cranes were going in one direction and then
another, acting like they weren't sure which way to go (or perhaps finding
the right wind current). Over 50 species on a day where I expected maybe 30
or so.

[cobirds] Birds on Baseline Reservoir this morning

2017-03-22 Thread Jeff Parks
Hi all -

I stopped by Baseline Reservoir to see what might be lurking out there this
morning. Highlights were a flock of Ruddy Duck (I counted 18), three
Horned Grebes, two of them males starting to show breeding colors, and a
lone Cinnamon Teal. The other usual suspects were there as well, a good
number of Hooded Mergansers, quite a few Gadwall, and a few Bufflehead and
Goldeneye. A couple of Killdeer were running around on the sandy areas on
the SW end, and the resident flock of Crows were there as well. All seen
from Cherryvale Road a little ways up from the south end of the res.

Good Birding -
