[cobirds] Worm-eating Warbler in Loveland

2018-05-11 Thread Walter Wehtje
Late this afternoon, Georgia Doyle and Denise Brettinger found a
Worm-eating Warbler near the High Plains Environmental Center in Loveland,
CO. The bird was in some willows where the trail from the center intersects
the trail that circles Equalizer Lake, about 100 m SW of the Center's barn.
Nick Komar and I were there by 6:30 PM and saw the bird after 20 minutes of
searching. We watched it until 7:30 PM. The bird was foraging low. We never
saw it higher than 5' off the ground. The nasty weather tonight may keep it
in place, so it'd be worth searching for it tomorrow morning. I posted some
photos on Colorado Field Ornithology

Good luck,

Walter Wehtje

[cobirds] Bobolinks, Pella Crossing; Black-bellied Plover, Lagerman, Boulder Co

2018-05-11 Thread Charles Hundertmark
The previously reported Bobolinks continue at Pella Crossing. One rendered a
spectacular long singing flight.

A single Black-bellied Plover (continuing?) was at Lagerman Reservoir where
there was also a Clark’s Grebes well as a few Westerns.

[cobirds] Night Birds in Roosevelt NF

2018-05-11 Thread Michael Lamson
The snipes are courting in the Coughlin Meadows area in Roosevelt National
Forest, 8.5 miles up Sugarloaf Road from Boulder Canyon, 2500 m altitude
(i.e montane).
They are still most active after dark but I expect to be able to watch them
soon.

Saw-whet owls are calling between midnight and dawn in the same area.

[cobirds] Re: 2 Bitterns, Sawhill/Walden

2018-05-11 Thread Michael Lamson
When I was growing up in New Hampshire, old-timers called this bird
"stake-driver". At the right distance, the call sounded like "*oonk*-ka-
*oonk*". The "oonks" sound like a distant sledge hammer hitting a wooden
stake, but I don't know what the "ka" was thought to be. I haven't heard
this call in Colorado, so I will be there at 0700 tomorrow. Thanks for the
post.

[cobirds] Bobolinks (Larimer)

2018-05-11 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN
Two male bobolinks north of Reservoir Ridge Trail in private hayfield north of
Trail going e-w from Overland Trail parking lot. The actual spot was roughly
due north of the big plum thicket that engulfs the fence line near the elevated
red tank on private side of fence.

2018-05-11 Thread Kit Basom
Enjoyed watching and listening to two American bitterns at Sawhill/Walden,
between 7:15 and 7:50 this morning. The song always reminds me of an
old-fashioned hand pump or perhaps broken plumbing. I've been hearing it
occasionally in the area since May 5, but today was the first time I saw
the birds, stretched out, beaks pointed skyward (except when singing).

[cobirds] Black-chinned Hummingbird, Larimer

2018-05-11 Thread 'arvind panjabi' via Colorado Birds
Have been out of town a few days, but this morning I had a male black-chinned
hummer coming to my feeders, not a ‘regular’ yard bird for me at all at my home
near Horsetooth Mountain Park.
Also back, Orioles and BH Grosbeaks in my yard, among the numerous lazuli
buntings and other already reported arrivals.
Love spring!
