[cobirds] Williamson's Sapsucker and more migrating White-throated Swifts in Canon City area
Today I found the first of the fall Williamson's Sapsucker, a male, in Canon City. It was feeding in one of the pines at a private residence where I have seen many sapsuckers over the years. Today I also found a latish Warbling Vireo along the Arkansas River and a Black Phoebe nearby. A few days ago I spotted another migrating flock of White-throated Swifts, these were east of Canon City following the Arkansas River. I have posted photos of the sapsucker and the swifts on my Birds and Nature blog. http://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/ SeEtta Moss Canon City http://BirdsAndNature.blogspot.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Re: Snipe Symposium. Walden Ponds. Boulder
Hi, all. Yesterday afternoon, Friday, Oct. 3, Hannah and Andrew and I popped in at Cottonwood Marsh to see if we could view the snipe symposium. I'm not sure if we were at the right pond (we checked only Cottonwood Marsh), but we saw no snipes. However, we did find 4 Greater Yellowlegs, a Wood Duck and a few Northern Pintails, and 2 Orange-crowned Warblers. Also sightings of Pat Heller and Dan Durda. eBird checklist here: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S20024351 Ted Floyd Lafayette, Boulder County, Colorado On Friday, October 3, 2014 7:02:26 AM UTC-6, Carl Starace wrote: Fun to observe such a gathering of Wilson's Snipe,[32], at the first pond. [cobirds] Baltimore Oriole, El Paso County, 10/4
Hi, all. We live in the Old Farm subdivision of NE Colorado Springs. A few minutes ago we had a new bird at our suet feeder for a few minutes. After viewing the bird and consulting both our Sibley and Nat Geo guides, we concluded it was a first fall Baltimore Oriole. This is a first for our yard and totally unexpected. The bird was orange overall, not yellow. It had a long tail and sharp bill – not like a tanager bill. The wings were black with two white bars. There was no black on the head. After in finished at our suet feeder it flew up our hill to the east. Really a cool sighting for Jeanne and me. Let’s Go Birding!! [cobirds] White-throated Sparrow, Boulder Co., Oct. 4
Hello, Birders. A little while ago this sunny Saturday morning, Oct. 4, Andrew and I saw and heard a *White-throated Sparrow* along the shore of Waneka Lake, Boulder County. The bird was just northwest of the playground. The White-throated Sparrow exhibits a balanced chromosomal polymorphism; the bird we observed was of the black-and-white (bright or dominant) morph. In the past week, White-throated Sparrows have been putting on a good show just to our north; a week ago, Andrew and I (and others) saw at least 4 just outside Cheyenne, Laramie County, and a few days later, birders in Casper, Natrona County, found at least 12. Here is a recording of the flight call of the White-throated Sparrow at Waneka Lake: http://www.xeno-canto.org/197803 Spectrographically, the flight call of the White-throated Sparrow is unique, being double-banded, high-pitched, descending, and wavering or trilled toward the end. This is what the Waneka Lake bird looked like: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-j0zlKmCFGm4/VDAy7QHyDAI/Vt0/3Msrq5IDAmk/s1600/White-throated%2BSparrow.jpg In the immediate vicinity were Orange-crowned, Wilson's, and Audubon's warblers. Also, surround-sound Allard's ground crickets. No Sandhill Cranes for us yet, but we have ears cocked to the sky... [cobirds] Grandview Cemetery, Fort Collins (LARIMER)
I went to Grandview Cemetery yesterday evening and this morning. Things were very lively around a couple of the hackberry trees that Dave Leatherman has posted about so many times. The only warblers I spotted were Orange-crowned, but there were Ruby-crowned Kinglets, lots of Chickadees (including Mountain), lots of Red-breasted Nuthatches, and (this morning) a small group of Bushtits. As near as I can tell, the psyllids are hatching. I'm not posting because I saw anything terribly unusual, but rather to encourage other birders to visit the Cemetery and check those hackberries that attracted several unusual warblers last October. [cobirds] Late No. Waterthrush, Walden/Sawhill Ponds, Boulder County
CObirders, About 10 am this morning I walked west along the Walden/Sawhill boundary, then turned to the south where I walked along a dirt trail/road until I reached the SW corner of Sawhill Lake #1. What sounded like a dozen chickadees and a bird with a very distinct, hard chip were in a tree between the road and the lake. I finally located the stealthy waterthrush and got excellent looks from about 20'. It had a white breast covered by dark brown stripes, a white supercilium, and pointed bill. The waterthrush didn't seem to be hanging out with other birds. It flew toward Boulder Creek, and I did not re-find it. A Ruby-crowned Kinglet and several White-crowned Sparrows were in the vicinity. I'll post a complete list to E-bird. A Prairie Falcon was sitting on a tall power pole by Cottonwood Marsh when I left. I scoped waterfowl on Cottonwood Marsh before I left and found 5 Greater Yellowlegs, 1 Redhead hanging out with a few RIng-necked Ducks, many coots and wigeon and a smattering of other species. It's a gorgeous day out there-- hope someone re-finds it. Paula Hansley Louisville -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Waterthrush sp.
I probably should have identified the waterthrush as Waterthrush sp., because I did not see the leg color to rule out Louisiana Waterthrush (bright pink). There are other subtle differences between the species, but I did not see it long enough to consider them. The brown streaking on the birds upper breast was dense and bold, more similar to that of the Northern Waterthrush. The Northern Waterthrush is much more likely to be seen here, but you never know!
