John Vanderpoel and I teamed up to spend the day birding in Weld and Morgan
Counties today. Conditions were "wonderful"-cold, misty at time and almost
always overcast with east winds which at time drove the wind-chills well into
the sub-32 range. We started birding (or at least I started our
Chico Basin Ranch was very birding today, with the best bird being a
Blue-winged Warbler at the banding station (El Paso Co.). I first saw the
bird while watching a male Orchard Oriole; I have a few shots with the
warbler and oriole in the same shot. The bird was working the shorter trees

There was a nice smattering of migrants where I looked today at Littleton.
Of interest to me were these:
Around St Mary Church on S. Prince St there was a *Virginia's Warbler*
along with Yellows and Orange-crowned, a soaring *Peregine Falcon*,
and a *Northern
Mockingbird*. I think this was maybe
Migration was in full swing on the eastern plains today, May 14. Here are

Green Heron at Doug Kissel Pond in Limon.
Two Marbled Godwits at Shaeffer Reservoir (there were many other shorebirds,
but wind made it difficult to scope)
Ash-throated Flycatcher at Karval SWA
Hi all,
Hope I didn't get anyone too excited - I meant that I saw an indigo
bunting, not a blue bunting. Colors!! Thanks to Chuck for kindly pointing
out my mistake. Hope everyone has had a wonderful global big day!

This afternoon I saw a male Bobolink on Shumway road just south of its
intersection with Squirrel Creek road. I don't know how common bobolinks
are in this part of Colorado but it was the first time I had seen one in
Colorado.

Looks like my backyard migration has started in Colorado Springs. Yesterday I
got a flock of chipping sparrows with one white-crowned sparrow, and they are
still here. Western tanager and Virginia warbler have also shown up.

This is the second time to have RBGR in my yard but the first time at my
feeders! Check it out on WRShade3 flickr. Also delighted with four Lazuli
Buntings (two male, two female) at the feeders for the first time for this
species! And to add to the color, the Bullock's Orioles are back at the
Hey COBirders,
PERFECT migrant banding conditions today at Clear Spring Ranch, - cool, low
ceiling, slight S breeze, and the diversity and numbers today reflected that. I
caught birds from 7:00-12:00.
Best migrants today were the array of Empid flycatchers:
Least Flycatcher,
2 Dusky
A total of 10 of us enjoyed the Alamosa Bird Walk to celebrate
International Migratory Bird Day and we had ideal conditions. Sunny and no
winds, which made the orange of the Bullock's Oriole absolutely outrageous.
With no winds, we were able to listen to the chorus of birds and learn some

Lots of blue-grey gnatcatchers and Virginias warblers at red rocks this
morning. We also had nice looks at a lazuli and a blue bunting, bullocks
Orioles, and black headed grosbeaks. The chats were being noisy, too!

Ad male near the bridge over South Boulder Creek. Tons of migrants, mostly
Virginia's Warblers and other montane breeders halted by the weather.

Chatfield was not as birdy as I’d hoped this morning, but there is an Eastern
Phoebe on the handicapped fisherman trail by Kingfisher Bridge. Also in that
vicinity was Green-Tailed Towhee, Gray Catbird and the rest of the normal
contingent of spring birds. No Lazuli Bunting, which surprised
Very birdy this AM in Boulder County but just viewed a brilliant male
Rose-breasted Grosbeak by the small power station on the Skunk Creek trailhead.
Other birds of note - Plumbeous vireo (calling), Dusky flycatcher,
green-tailed towhee, and returning ovenbirds.

I heard yesterday that Crow Valley is closed due to flooding and I was
planing on heading out there Thursday so I was wondering if some one could
tell me if the Auto tour Roads are in good condition or also flooded out.
In which case I will find somewhere else to bird watch that day. I would

I wasn't planning on starting the Global Big Day by listening to nocturnal
migration. But my dog scratched at the door, so I took her out just now in
the misty overcast night, and I heard lots of Swainson's Thrushes, giving
their Spring Peeper-like Weet calls from overhead. Then a Spotted
