[cobirds] Prothonotary Warbler Update at Chico Basin Ranch (El Paso County)

2016-09-16 Thread lmkoitsch
Hiya!

I just wanted to let everyone know that the male Prothonotary Warbler that
was banded today at Chico Basin Ranch (fee area) in El Paso County was
resighted again in Holmes Grove twice this afternoon, the latest being
around 3pm. Speaking of Holmes Grove, it was alive with birds this
afternoon! Juncos and thrushes foraging on the ground; spizella sparrows in
the grasses; woodpeckers, warblers, and empids in the trees; it was simply
magical! We also incidentally caught a Hoary Bat in the nets today, so you
really just never know what you're going to see when you come visit us at
the banding station, which I invite everyone to do! We try to band every
day weather permitting and nets are open by 7/730 and usually closed around
noon. Hope to see you out there!

[cobirds] Re: Prothonotary Warbler - El Paso County

2016-09-16 Thread lmkoitsch
We actually banded that Cassin's Vireo after you left, Bill. Also banded
was a handsome male Red-shafted Flicker, one of two flickers seen today.
Orange-crowned Warblers are also starting to arrive in good numbers as well
as Ruby-crowned Kinglets. Holmes Grove was full of birds in the afternoon
and the Prothonotary Warbler was sighted there again around 3pm.

COBirders,

A golden swamp warbler was caught and banded at the Bird Conservatory of the
Rockies/Chico Basin Ranch banding station in El Paso County (fee area). It
was captured inside the exclosure in the net lane closest to the large

Also caught was a male Red-naped Sapsucker and a Cassin's Vireo was fussing
in the wooded area. Junco, Song Sparrow, and White-crowned Sparrow numbers
were on the rise. Hermit and Swainson's thrushes were banded.

[cobirds] Re: Yellow-throated Vireo at Grandview Cem, FtCollins (Weld)

2016-09-16 Thread David Wade

Thanks to Dave's tip I managed to get a couple of shots of the
Yellow-throated Vireo this morning. When I arrived, I saw Dave as he was
leaving, he pointed out the elms on the West side that he saw it in. I
searched there for awhile until the warbler neck became too much to bear.
Because Dave saw it in the elms I thought I would search other elms for
it. About the time I was ready to give up, I found it where sections B, D
and L all meet. (There is a section map of the cemetery engraved in stone
at the office near the ditch by the entrance). My advice for any seeking
this bird is to search the elm trees in the Northwest corner of the
cemetery.

Folks,I and others were able to spend some quality time with the Cherry Creek jaeger, including close looks and photographs.  I and others are convinced the bird is a juvenile, intermediate morph Parasitic Jaeger.  I will add close up photos later showing a long, thin bill with small nail, buffy undertail coverts, considerable white in the base of the primaries above and short, pointed central tail projections.  The bird is putting on a show from various points in the lake.Glenn WalbekCastle Rock, COSent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE DROID

[cobirds] Re: Parasitic Jaeger- only one previous record from Cherry Creek SP.or Arapahoe County.

2016-09-16 Thread Brian Johnson
Congratulations also to Glenn Walbek for findings this rare bird! Very
exacting. I am wondering if this bird is the same jaeger I saw at the
Marina Sandspit at Chatfield on the 9th of this month in Douglas County, on
week ago. This jaeger I believe to have been a Parasitic and also a
juvenile. It is being reviewed by the CBRC now, I have three photos of it
for them to look over. It would be impossible to say for sure if it is the
same bird of course, but if so it is a traveling bird, possibility having
crossed into Jefferson over South Platte Reservoir's small Jeffoc part
across the highway from Chatfield, which it looked like might be doing at
one point, that would make it a tri county jaeger! Interesting to try and
piece together the movements of this bird. Here is my checklist from that
time if any one would like to compare photos,
