[cobirds] Philadelphia Vireos Barr Lake (Adams Co)

2017-09-13 Thread 'Dan Stringer' via Colorado Birds
Today Tom Whitten and I saw Philadelphia Vireos at Barr Lake in Adams
County, in two different locations.
First one was on the trail that runs from the banding station east then
north, on the west side of the small pond just off of the boardwalk to the
viewing blind. A bright bird, tucked in deep in willows, working 4 to 5
feet above ground.

Second one was no more than 100 yards from the boat ramp parking area going
towards the banding station. Working low as well, mostly near the ground
but went up and down. A drab bird, thus it took a bit of time to separate
from Warbling, although it didn't look right for Warbling from the start.
Even this paler bird had much more yellow underneath, especially throat and
undertail coverts. This bird seemed smaller than Warbling overall, mostly
due to a shorter tail, the head looked less angular, bill even seemed a bit
smaller, but the most interesting thing separating it from Warbling was in
addition to the prominent curved white line above the eye, it had small but
quite noticeable white below the eye (dark lores making it stand out more).

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch Banding Report - Week 1

2017-09-13 Thread Aaron Yappert
Hey all,

The Bird Conservancy of the Rockies banding Station at Chico Basin Ranch has
wrapped up its first week of banding and we've had some exciting captures. The
cold front early in the week brought some good birds, but lately, with the warm
weather, things have generally tapered off later in the day.

Through 7 days of banding, we've banded 294 individuals of 40 species.

Highlights: Calliope Hummingbird (1), Red-eyed Vireo (2), Ovenbird (3),
Bewick's Wren (1), Nashville Warbler (1), and Virginia's Warbler (1).

The station runs Monday through Saturday, 6:30 am till 12 noon. We love to
share our birds with the public so feel free to come by. Please make sure to
check in at the Ranch office before visiting the station. Lastly, be aware that
the Ranch uses the station as an educational opportunity for a variety of
school groups or other interested organizations so after 9 am the station may
be filled with wide-eyed youngsters.

Good birding,

Re: [cobirds] Montane Birds on the Move

2017-09-13 Thread Peter Burke
Hi Ted,
Thanks for sharing the NAB article. I'm curious if the heavy smoke that
blanketed much of the northern Rockies might be partly or wholly to blame?
Are you aware of other instances where heavy smoke, without regional fires,
has generated species movement akin to the effects of other large weather
systems like, say, cat 5 hurricanes?

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 8/13/17

2017-09-13 Thread Meredith . McBurney
Slow, hot and weird morning. There was a Chickadee convention going on in
the area around the front nets as we made our first run - we caught 8 (1
new, 6 banded earlier this year, 1 banded last year) and there were still
many in the willows chickadee-ing. We also caught a Brown Creeper (an
unusual capture for us) and a first-of-season Brewer's Sparrow and a few
Warblers and we thought we were starting a nice, interesting day. But that
was pretty much it for the morningOnly 9 new birds today:

Black-capped Chickadee 1 new, 1 banded last year
House Wren 2
Common Yellowthroat 1
Wilson's Warbler 2
Brown Creeper 1
Brewer's Sparrow 1

Maybe we need to put some nets up near the teepee where Ira et al found the
Bunting and Thrashers!

Come visit! We are open 6 days per week (CLOSED Mondays),
weather permitting, through October 15. We are opening nets at 6:30 and
should have birds back at the station before 7:30. We will close most days
by about 11:30, earlier now when it is so hot. School groups arrive most
weekdays at about 9:30.

[cobirds] Caspian Terns - Timnath Res.

2017-09-13 Thread marimammoser
At 11:30 today, there were still two Caspian Terns on the sand spit to the
north
at Timnath Reservoir. They flew in as I was scanning the shore where the
Gulls
and Pelicans and Cormorants roost.
