[cobirds] Boulder Bluebird trifecta

2017-10-09 Thread Peter Burke
I thought I'd check Boulder Reservoir for jaegers this evening. There
wasn't much action on the water at all, but flocks of bluebirds were
everywhere. Most were Mountain Bluebirds, but along 51st St., SW of Sixmile
Res. there was a group of 4-5 Western and possibly an Eastern.
Surprisingly, these birds were flushed and pursued by an American Kestrel.
I parked at the North lot where there were several dozen more MOBL and one
EABL.

Not much else that I was able to turn up.

Good birding,
Peter

[cobirds] Jaeger and other stuff at Pueblo Reservoir, Pueblo Co. 10/9

2017-10-09 Thread Brandon
I got some lousy photos of the jaeger, when I was alone in the SE Corner of
Pueblo Reservoir. Bill Maynard came down from the Springs, and he and I
saw it pretty well in flight, and Pearle and Clif also saw it.

The lousy photos can be seen at

https://www.flickr.com/photos/brandonsbirdphotos/

If anyone has opinions on what it is, that would good to hear. Juvenile
jaeger identification is not my favorite thing.

Before the other birders came, I saw a Sanderling and four Common Terns at
South Shore Marina area.

The four of us went over to West Fishing Road at Pueblo Reservoir, and saw
two juvenile Sabine's Gulls, Common Tern, and Peregrine Falcon. Bill and I
saw a flock of dowitchers fly by as well.

When the weather is lousy, like today, that is when the rare stuff seems to
come to Pueblo Reservoir.

[cobirds] Broad-tailed Hummer - Highlands Ranch

2017-10-09 Thread Gregg Goodrich
Our 2-3 resident Broad-tailed Hummingbirds have been gone from our feeder
since September 30, we were thrilled and surprised to have a Broad-tailed
Hummingbird at our feeder this morning. 32 degrees and snowing pretty good
with around 4 inches on the deck rail. It drank and rested under our deck
for about 15 minutes before going to the neighbors hummer feeder. So glad
we left our feeder out as David had recommended. I suspect this individual
is a migrant.

[cobirds] Jaeger at Pueblo Reservoir right now

2017-10-09 Thread Brandon
Just saw a dark Jaeger at Pueblo Reservoir out from South Shore Marina. I
am at Sailboad looking across the lake. It landed on the water, going to go
back over to South marina hoping for closer looks.

Re: [cobirds] Sandhill Cranes, Colo Spgs, El Paso Co, Sunday night

2017-10-09 Thread Pat Hayward
That is really interesting, because Friday night we experienced what
sounded like a large number of Sandhill Cranes flying over our campsite in
the Rita Blanca National Grasslands in the very northwest corner of the
Texas panhandle. We heard several groups between 9:00 and 10:00 pm. They'd
just had some heavy but isolated thunderstorms in the area that morning and
afternoon.
I found some info online that it has been documented, but couldn't find
much more than that about night migrations for Sandhills

[cobirds] Sandhill Cranes, Colo Spgs, El Paso Co, Sunday night

2017-10-09 Thread Steven Brown
Hey COBirders,

(no CSR banding today - so catching jays at my house).

Last night I did some “hot tub birding” about 9:30, and had several Sandhill
Cranes calling as they flew over high. The wind was just picking up then, and I
lost the calls before I could spot them, to count. I haven’t observed or heard
of night migrations by these guys, and wasn’t sure if this was just to be ahead
of the front, or if it is a regular occurrence. Still pretty cool.

Stay warm

[cobirds] Results Big Sit! at Chatfield State Park

2017-10-09 Thread Joey Kellner
Yesterday's DFO sponsored Big Sit! at Chatfield State Park was once again a
great success!

Over fifty people stopped by to participate and/or see what it was all about
including a Cub Scout troop!

70 species were tallied throughout the day with highlights being a
Violet-green Swallow, Lesser Black-backed Gull and Golden and Bald Eagles.

A behavior highlight was watching a Bald Eagle chasing an Osprey until the
Osprey dropped its fish (onto dry land)...which the eagle did NOT retrieve!

Thanks to Colorado Parks and Wildlife for supplying the signs, table and
having a canopy available in case the weather changed. Thank you!

Thanks to all that came out to enjoy beautiful day!
