[cobirds] Boulder county trails closed

2018-06-19 Thread Maureen Blackford
Today my friend and I encountered several trailhead in Boulder county were
closed:  Downy Draw, South Mesa Trail, Marshall Trail (just off Hwy 93 and road
east of Eldorado Canyon hwy), Trailhead on Hwy 93 just south of Hwy 128.
I did an internet search and found trailheads were closed due to muddy
conditions.   So, if heading out for a hike or birding adventure in southern
Boulder county tomorrow, you might want to check the status of the trailhead on
the internet.
Hopefully an internet search will provide an answer I found on searching on
'why are trailheads closed in Boulder county'

[cobirds] Boulder Birding: Yes to Lilian's Meadowlark and CS Warbler

2018-06-19 Thread 'Steven Mlodinow' via Colorado Birds
Greetings All

Today I did a half-day poke-about Boulder County. I started at 6:30 or so at
Gunbarrel Hill. I found the pullout on Lookout Road about 0.7 miles east of
75th (on south side of road). And there I heard, and recorded, the Lilian's
Meadowlark (thank you, Christian). It actually flew close enough at one point
that i was able to get a pretty good look at the head pattern.

Notably, I am pretty certain that I heard (and saw) another Eastern Meadowlark
(from my distant hearing, sounded more like the nominate -- Eastern Eastern
Meadowlark) due south of 79th. That area looks to have public access, so ...

The CS Warbler was cooperatively singing from the along the road at the South
Mesa Trailhead, a good thing as both South Mesa and Doudy Draw trails were
closed. The explanation was that there was work on the power lines, which of
course, are along the road. Particularly at Doudy, I could see no conceivable
interaction between work being done and folks using the trails or parking lot.
Alas.

So, by the nature of good fortune, that took me up to Eldorado Canyon SP, a
place I'd not visited before and much enjoyed. Nothing rare, just a goodly
number and diversity of birds.

Are those way out on the east side of the field, requiring a scope to see?
I was there with binoculars 2 weeks ago and could see only red-winged
blackbirds.

[cobirds] Re: Chestnut Sided Warbler present Monday a.m.

2018-06-19 Thread Richard Pautsch
The Chestnut-sided Warbler was singing from a dead branch at the top of a
tree near the beginning of the South Mesa trail Monday morning at 8 a.m.
Note that the South Mesa parking lot was closed this morning, but you can
park across the road at Doudy Draw parking lot.

[cobirds] Morgan Playas

2018-06-19 Thread William H Kaempfer
I remember flying into DIA three years ago and noticing from the air several
large playas somewhere between Prewitt Reservoir and Jackson Reservoir. I
decided to do some exploring and in Mid-August 2015 I was able to track the
spots down overland. It wasn't very difficult, really, in fact I think I had
seen one of them once before while driving down CO 71 toward Brush. The three
large playas (and a few smaller ones) had lots of water, but sufficient
shoreline to host large numbers of shorebirds and waterfowl. One nice feature
is that Morgan County roads ran right next to these playas, in fact right
through one of them. The three spots are at CO 71 and MCR JJ, MCR 26 and JJ,
and MCR 23 and HH.

Over the next couple of years, the water gradually dried up and became more
saline. Bird lists dropped from total species lists in the 30s to 20s, teens to
single digits. But there were still some surprises-how about the Snowy Plovers
with chicks that Kathy Mihm Dunning and David Dowell have photo documentation
for? Right now the three playas have eBird hot spot lists of 106, 103 and 85
species, of which shorebirds account for 19, 20 and 20 species.

So why all this field ornithology history right now? Well, two reasons. Have
you tracked the weather in the past week? Last night's storm dropped a band of
4 to 6 inches or rain basically right over these playas. While I wouldn't urge
anyone to race out there right now-the roads are probably impassable at the
present, my guess is that the playas have been nicely refreshed with the recent
rains. Second, while it is technically not summer yet, southbound shorebird
migration is actually starting. So plan a trip to Morgan County this summer
and bring your scope for some shorebird study.

[cobirds] Fox Sparrows, Park/Summit Counties

2018-06-19 Thread Paula Hansley
CObirders,

Yesterday at 5:04 AM, while starting my USGS breeding bird route on the
road at the top of Boreas Pass , I heard at least two Fox sparrows singing
with the pre-dawn chorus that included white-crowned and Lincoln’s
sparrows, robins, and mtn. bluebirds. I had two more singing fox sparrows
along the road between the top of the Pass and Como. I have previously
never heard more than one on this route.
