[cobirds] Yard birds

2024-03-12 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
Since 1997 in our Franktown yard we've recorded 161 species. 16 sparrows, 14
warblers including Prairie and Parula. all 3 bluebirds. Mockingbird. Purple
Finch. Northern Saw-whet, N. Pygmy & Western Screech Owls (but not Eastern
Screech). N. Goshawk and both eagles.
Adding birds seen along our access road, the list goes up to 184.

We have several feeders, and I report daily lists to eBird, even the low
counts. We watch and listen throughout the day. Some species (W.Scr-Owl) we
heard until we chased it to confirm the ID.

[cobirds] Black Forest CBC

2024-01-16 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
The Black Forest CBC counted 1948 birds of 39 species; average 1748 birds, 38
species.  Our 25 observers went out in 13 partis.
Two new top counts: 75 Red-breasted nuthatches - way above prior high of
35; 217 Red Crossbills - more than  double previous high of 130.Besides that,
some minor peaks  29 flickers (previous high 23, ave. 19); 26 ravens (=
previous high)    We always enjoy this count, as well as our other CBCs.
Starting this year, Jeannie Mitchell will run the count.

[cobirds] Fox Sparrow, Douglas

2023-10-26 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
Just after lunch today Urling spotted under our feeders a Fox Sparrow. We both
had fairly good looks at it, though too briefly (courtesy of one of our
menacing squirrels).
Earlier this morning, I saw a late Orange-crowned Warbler in the bushes by our
stream.

[cobirds] The Big Sit!

2023-10-09 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
We enjoyed a The Big Sit! at our house (our 21st), with Laurie Duke
presiding from our roof, the rest of us down below most of the time.We
counted 37 species, 123 individuals; the sixth time for that many species (one
year we counted 38), but a low low number of individuals. We did, though have
two new species: a Broad-winged Hawk that Urling flushed out of the thick scrub
oak and a Red-naped Sapsucker that we all observed.

Birding Colorado: Where, How, and When to Spot Birds Across the State

Birding Colorado is a guide to the best bird watching sites in Colorado, from
national parks and wildlife refuges to marshes, mountains and canyons.
Organized by region, each site description informs readers on habitats,
visiting information, and birds you'll encounter. What sets this book apart is
the extra information on bird status and bird habitat that has made it more
than a mere site guide and earned a place in the Denver Audubon's curriculum.

Rules of Engagement series (Operation: Camouflage Christmas, Operation:
Allegiance, Operation Reconnaisse)  Each story features characters in the Army
wrestling with a romance, military life and their faith.

[cobirds] Fall Count

2023-09-16 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
Our 44th annual Fall Count recorded 10,823 birds of 162 species. Count of
individuals lower than average, species count up 7 from average. We had 3 new
species: Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Common Tern, and Dickcissel.    Say's Phoebes
have increased over the years, with the 66 seen last weekend far more than any
previous year. 17 Solitary Sandpipers, highes count by one. 506 Western Grebes,
which seems to have increased over the years.
Only one Franklin's Gull, lowest count except two years when we didn't
record any. Half the duck species dropped from average: Ruddy, Com. Merganser,
Green-winged Teal, Mallard, Wigeon, even Canada Goose. Redheads show a drastic
drop, which started in 2013: 11 this year, average 96. But 207 Shovelers, third
highest in 43 years, topped the average of 94.

July 15, with a Denver Audubon trip: on the road south of Castlewood Canyon

27 total species. Some folks got decent pictures of a Dickcissel, I don't know
about grosbeak photos.
We had Chipping,Vesper, & Lark Sparrows, Green-tailed & Spotted Towhees,
both bluebirds.    Quite a rewarding morning.

Dan Moore in Parker contacted Denver Audubon, and then sent me photos of a

It seems unlikely that this constitutes a wild bird that arrived on its own.
Any thoughts? Does anyone know of someone who might have kept one and from whom
it escaped?

[cobirds] Spring birds - Douglas

2023-05-02 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
Spring has arrived, or at least some spring birds have. Yesterday we counted 4
Blue-gray Gnatcatchers in our gully.
Last night, Urling heard a Poorwill - wish I had better ears.Today, a Western
Tanager and a Black-headed Grosbeak, both striking males.20 Chipping Sparrows
flying along a fence line. Tree Swallows perched on two different nest
boxes.Western Bluebirds & White-breasted Nuthatches vying for a hole in our
wall.Mountain Chickadees and a House Wren vying for a box on the side of the
house. Lots of singing Spotted Towhees.
And either 2 or 5 Bushtits feeding on suet cakes -- we wonder where they have a
nest[s].

[cobirds] Cobirds post

2023-04-29 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
Cobirds didn't seem to take kindly to my trying to post the Denver Audubon
newsletter about its upcoming Birdathon. My apologies for what turned into such
a mess.
But -- if you'd like to support Denver Audubon through its Birdathon, go to the
website, denveraudubon.org and read about it.

[cobirds] Patch birds, Douglas

2023-04-27 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
We added two new year birds on this morning's walk.First, a Ruby-crowned
Kinglet that drew our attention by singing off and on. What a great sound.
Then, a couple of Violet-green Swallows skimming insects off the surface of
the local pond.

Denver Audubon will hold a Sale of nature books -- mostly bird books -- this
Saturday and Sunday at the Audubon Nature Center at Waterton.
It will open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Urling and I donated 175 books from our nature library -- surely one or two
will appeal to you.

[cobirds] New year birds - Douglas

2023-04-22 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
This morning we added two new year birds for our patch. Two Vesper Sparrows
perched on a fence along our road, looking quite crisp.
Then we saw a Loggerhead Shrike, perched on a phone wire near the Vespers. We
flushed it and itflew across the road and perched on a fence line where we
could see all the details.
We have had a Broad-tailed Humm. at our feeder for about a week (after Karen
Metzhad one on the other side of Franktown). It stays only briefly. Also our
first
White-crowned Sparrow of the spring, a Gambel's version.

Only a couple of juncos remain and we haven't recorded a Solitaire in a week or
so.

[cobirds] Black Forest CBC

2023-01-11 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
The Black Forest CBC on Jan. 2, 2023, encountered adverse weather. Only 4 of
us went out, and we had 4 counting at 2 feeders. The fog and the snow made
conditions unsafe, so that none of the walking parties covered their (mostly
ponderosa pine) territories, and the drivers elected not to navigate roads so
foggy other cars couldn't see a stopped birder's vehicle.
We ended up with 31 species (close to the average of 35) but only 364 birds
(1538 average). No notable observations to report.

[cobirds] Denver Urban CBC

2023-01-11 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
The 35th Denver Urban CBC tallied 90 species (ave.  87) and 30,147 birds
(ave. 39,674). We failed to cover one section of the South Platte, so that our
waterfowl numbers dipped. 135 observers went out in the field and 12 watched at
feeders.
* We found three new birds for the count:
-a White-winged Dove that has patronized a Park Hill feeder for a week
or two; and        -an Eastern Phoebe found by the Tuesday Birders group in
Fairmont Cemetery -- and approved by eBird within 2 days.       - a Bohemian
Waxwing (just one) south of Hampden, mixed in (surprise) with 151 Cedar
Waxwings.
* Other rarities    -the count's 2nd Cassin's Finches (30; reflecting the
state-wide incursion), 3rd Lapland Longspur, 4th Winter Wren, 4th
  Long-tailed Duck.* We had record high counts for Townsend's Solitaire (53;
average 15), Cedar Waxwing (187; ave. 39), Blue Jay (147 --
previous high 80), and (surprise) Eur. Collared-Doves (160 - first one on
Jan. 1, 2006).
* Near record highs for Robin (1,278; ave. 405); 221 Horned Larks (ave. 119);
and 16 Great Blue Herons (ave. 8).
Lesser Scaup (96; ave. 31).* House Sparrows and House Finches continue
their drop in numbers from the first counts.
  * Other drops: Magpie 335 vs ave. 587; Bald Eagle (39 vs. 46 and highs of
94-95 from 2016 to 2019); lowest count for Rock Pigeons (832, ave. 1,966)

[cobirds] Sad news

| We are sad to announce the unexpected passing of Marilyn Rhodes. Marilyn was
a Denver Audubon Master Birder, graduating class of 2009-2010, a wonderful
field trip leader for Denver Audubon, a caring mentor to new field trip
leaders, and very active on our photo contest committee. She led the Denver
Botanic Gardens/Denver Country Club/Wash Park section of the annual Christmas
Bird Count on January 1. Our Executive Director has fond memories of those New
Year’s Day counts in freezing temperatures, searching for as many birds as we
could while enjoying the company of the hardy group led by Marilyn and Bob
Santangelo (her co-leader), who had (Bob still has!) a great sense of humor.  |

[cobirds] Patch birds - Douglas

2022-11-22 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
Two amazing birds today. As Urling drove out this afternoon she flushed a
Nighthawk from the road -- she thinks probably a Common Nighthawk.

Earlier we spotted a Northern Goshawk that perched near our feeders for 10
seconds or so. An immature.
Other than that, we tallied usual numbers of the usual birds. But those two  -
Wow!

[cobirds] Leaves - Franktown, Douglas

2022-10-16 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
The birds we see this month don't merit a special trip here -- we see just the
normal ones. We do enjoy the constant serenades of Solitaires. Juncos have
gradually started to arrive -- we counted around a dozen today. And we have
Pygmy Nuthatches, a species we haven't had regularly in past years.
But the fall colors around Franktown awe us. Yellow cottonwoods, red & orange &
yellow scrub-oaks, intense red 3-leaf sumac. Magical.

After walking the conifer patch, while Urling talked to the mail delivery

We also recorded our first Pink-sided Juncos today, along with most of the

[cobirds] Yard birds - Douglas

2022-09-27 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
Townsend's Solitaires have arrived in our patch to serenade us with their
lovely melodic songs. We have probably a dozen or more along our road. Beyond
that, we still see an occasional Western Tanager; the males have started to
change their head colors from orange to yellow.
Still regular: lots of chickadees (both kinds),  1-2 White-breasted Nuthatches,
several flocks of Pygmy Nuthatches, piles of Spotted Towhees (we've counted
15-20 several days). House Finches vary in number, from one or two up to 15 or
20. Scrub-Jays persist, and Blue Jays have arrived to join them (we see them
only in the winter months). Gluttonous Turkeys scrape up droppings under our
feeders -- from 5 to 15.
We hear crows and ravens, see an occasional Golden Eagle and even less
occasionally a Red-tailed Hawk. And just now, a Cooper's Hawk
immature.dKestrels moved through last week. So far no Juncos other than
Gray-headed.

[cobirds] Yard Birds, Douglas

2022-08-25 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
We see lots of juveniles this month. One day, 14 junior Spotted Towhees.
Several fledgling Gray-headed Juncos and Mountain and Western Bluebirds. 12
fledgling Robins gorging on a Chokecherry bush.

House Finches, Black-headed Grosbeaks, and Lesser Goldfinches feeding begging
youngsters. Chickadees (Mtn. & Black-capped) grab seeds and maybe take them to
their kids, maybe stash them.  Nuthatches (White-breasted and Pygmy) like the
suet and occasionally the thistle feeder. A fair selection of Hummingbirds,
mostly Broad-tailed. A Cooper's Hawk youngster kekking for food & attention.
One Cooper's crashed into our dotted window, but flew off and apparently didn't
injure itself.

Our dotted windows seem to work pretty well at helping the birds avoid our
windows.

Swallows have dispersed. So far, no fall migrants of note.

[cobirds] Shady birds

This morning, when the sun still made it hot, we drove up the road to
Castlewood Cyn. Church, near Willow Lake Drive. The ranch there has a fence
made of metal pipes that extends to its corrals.

There we saw a flock of 7 Lark Buntings and 3 Meadowlarks, all  huddled in the
shade of the lowest fence pipe. (We have seen no Lark Buntings this year and no
Meadowlarks for a couple of weeks.) No picture, sorry to say.

[cobirds] Bluebird trifecta - Douglas

2022-05-21 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
We wentout this afternoon to see what the snow brought, and on our Willow
Lake Drive, saw all three bluebird species. The Eastern, a stunning male, flew
along the road between the first & second turns. Plus 3 Westerns & 3 Mountains.
After observing it on the fence, we didn't see it again, including when we came
back an hour later.    Also on Willow Lake Driver: 2 Horned Larks, 6 Vesper
Sparrows, a Say's Phoebe.
McClain Pit has an abundance of swallows. Yesterday almost all wove back
and forth above the water, and today doing both that and perching on the power
lines along Castlewood Canyon Road. Yesterday, 500; today maybe 400.
Spectacular.
In our yard, a pair of Western Tanagers, half a dozen Black-headed
Grosbeaks, several American and one Lesser Goldfinch, plus the usual
contingent.

[cobirds] Birdathon quest - Douglas

2022-05-18 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
Some posts of 2-3 days ago suggest that Cobirders might enjoy
hearing about Urling's and my Birdathon quest on Friday. Starting at our Willow
Lake Drive patch: A frenzy of Violet-green Swallows! A dozenswarmed above a
conifer forest like a throng of bees. A couple of pods ofTurkey Vultures
circled above us. We counted more species in our Franktownpatch than we have
seen this year. (We did get up earlier than usual, andwalked both gullies that
intersect our road instead of only one.We heard our first-of-the-year
WarblingVireo (“how do you know that I’m here?”) and listened to and saw
singingWhite-crowned Sparrows (the Colorado mountain subspecies), and saw one
Wigeonon the pond. The inevitable flock of Turkeys prowled under our feeders.
And weenjoyed our usual scrub-oak denizens: Scrub-Jays, Chickadees, Nuthatches,
HouseFinches with their delightful song, 7 active and warbling
Black-headedGrosbeaks (they like suet cakes), and 8 Spotted Towhees. We spied
an elusiveGreen-ttailed Towhee, a Catbird,. One flicker with a red stripe on
the back ofhis neck as well as a red whisker—probably a hybrid. Then we headed
for Castlewood Canyon wherewe hoped to find White-throated Swifts; we didn’t
hear or see any, as wehaven’t so far this year. On the Winkler Ranch south of
the Park we saw 13 TreeSwallows and two pairs of Western and two of Mountain
Bluebirds, all claimingnest boxes. Next we drove to Louviers, hoping tobuttress
the list. At the pond there we saw 8 Wood Ducks, a Gadwall, and 3Shovelers.
After lunch and a tour through the Louviers woods (Catbird, YellowWarbler,
House Wren) we drove the streets hoping to score a House Sparrow. Westopped at
a terrific feeder which sported a passel of House Finches (wecounted 24 in the
town), plus a couple of Mourning and a couple Collared-Doves.And, a male
Evening Grosbeak called from a pine tree that towered over thefeeders. But no
House Sparrows! After driving every street (and stopped only bya couple to
check if we had a problem who turned out to feed birds, we left. Then, at the
last building in town, a church, we heard and saw some elusiveHouse Sprarows.
Only one trash bird left to find: RockPigeon. None in Louviers, none along the
road, none that we could find ineither Castle Rock or Franktown! The gravel pit
on Castlewood Canyon Roaddid have more ducks (including 17 Shovelers, and four
shorebirds scurrying on asand spit way across the water, a challenging scope
view. We called themKilldeer & Spotted Sandpiper.

Broad-tailed & Black-chinned Hummingbirds. House Wrens. Plus the usual

Scrub & Blue Jays. Three Gray-headed Juncos - no other junco-type for 2 weeks.
Pine Siskins and American Goldfinches - no Lessers so far.

[cobirds] Denver Urban CBC (Denver, Arapahoe, Adams)

2022-01-16 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
Our Denver Urban Christmas Bird Count tallied 85 species and 31,151 birds.
That's an average number of species, but the count of individuals dropped to
78% of the average of 40,066.    We saw big drops for non-native species: Rock
Pigeon (1,031 vs. 2,024 ave.); Starling (652 vs. 4,244 ave.); and House Sparrow
(96 vs. 1,320). We also had low counts for Com. Mergansers (191 vs. 476 ave.);
Coots (18 vs. 87); Bald Eagle (28 vs. 47; high of 96 in 2017); Downy Woodpecker
(22 vs. 44); House Finch (442 vs. 1142). We had fewer ducks (4,909, ave. 5,564)
and fewer raptors (146, ave, 200).
    In contrast, we had high counts for Buffleheads (276; previous high185);
Hooded Merganser (224, ave. 98; since 2010 they have gradually increased); 40
Double-crested Cormorants (ave. 4); Eur. Collared-Doves (148; first recorded,
one in 2005); 124 Am. Goldfinches (ave. 57, only 3 counts with more than a
hundred).    Barb Masoner's group, south of Hampden, found a new count bird: 3
Western Bluebirds. Other rarities include a Golden-crowned Sparrow, nicely
documented with photos by Steve Hebert's group at Bluff Lake, and a Lesser
Goldfinch at Mary & Dave Driscoll's feeder, also photographed.
We had to postpone the count from Jan. 1 due to a horrendous weather
forecast, and held it on Jan. 5; two sections didn't get covered -- the central
part of the South Platte and Fairmont Cemetery/Windsor Gardens. The latter got
covered on Jan. 2, but even adding in their observations doesn't change the
thrust of the count.   Hugh Kingery

2022-01-13 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
No one reacted to my description of a mystery flock that Urling and I saw. We
watched about 100 small birds feeding on a brushy hillside. The birds in back
kept flying over the front ones -- until they all took off for parts unknown. I
thought they sounded like Rosy-finches, but Urling saw stripey breasts.

Do any of you have experience with flocking birds that act this way?

2022-01-13 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
The 51st Black Forest CBC, held on Jan. 2, recorded 40 species and 1,635
individual birds. Average number of the 51 counts: 35 species and 1608 birds.
We had 21 observers in 8 parties, plus 7 feeder-watchers.
I don't detect much of a pattern of high and low counts.
We found fewer than average of some ponderosa species -- 49 Mtn. Chickadees
(ave. 64) and 75 Pygmy Nuthatches (ave. 89), but more Steller's Jays (57 vs.
30). The 24 Red-tailed Hawks way above the average 10, but 7 Rough-leggeds cf.
10 average.

Two invasive species dropped: Starling 94 (ave. 143); House Sparrow (2 vs.
23). Two increased: Rock Pigeon 74 vs. 25, Eur. Collared-Dove 32 vs. 6.

[cobirds] Ten best birds of 2021

2022-01-10 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds

Responding to Nick's posting a couple of weeks ago asking for our top  ten,
Urling and I put together this list.
* "Palomino" Junco returned for the 4th winter. Palomino, a Gray-headed Junco,
has splotches of white that distinguish it from other juncos.* Oct. 6, sitting
outside for lunch, we watched a Spotted Towhee lurch into the air and drop. A
rattlesnake had caught it; it took a half hour for the snake to consume the
towhee.* Townsends' Solitaires returned in October, tooting and singing their
lovely warble to set up winter territories.* A Fox Sparrow visited us from
January to March.* A Northern Goshawk burst onto our hanging-flat feeder,
paused a moment, then went on.* Ovenbirds sang regularly from a stream bottom.*
Two Golden Eagles soared over the house; then a Prairie Falcon dove at one or
the other, over and over.* Pygmy Nuthatches started coming regularly to our
feeders. What fun to watch these little acrobats.* The Big Sit! at our house
didn't net memorable birds but did provide excellent company.* And, a non-bird,
and not quite a "best." Our rabbit brush blooming in October failed to attract
the usual menu of butterflies. Instead we had 3-4 kinds, sporadically. It did
attract masses of honey bees on a daily basis.

[cobirds] Denver Urban CBC - ducks in Denver

2022-01-05 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
Urling & I surveyed the southern section of the South Platte on the Urban
CBC today. A plethora of ducks!
We counted 466 Shovelers, 225 Mallards, and, the best, 160 Buffleheads. 12
duck species. They included one striking male Barrow's Goldeneye, located just
south of Florida Ave.

One observation/question. Ducks packed the river from Florida south to
Grant Frontier Park; north of Florida we saw only smaller groups. One section
to the north had ice across it. So: why the difference?
Could water quality of the river change there?
Or does the water get colder than the ducks prefer?Or does something else
affect their preferences?

[cobirds] Black Forest CBC (El Paso, Elbert, & Douglas

2022-01-03 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
We enjoyed a pleasant day yesterday on the Black Forest CBC. The temperature
cooperated, and we even ate lunch outdoors at Davis Ammons' ranch. We got  most
excited by seeing the first Rough-legged Hawks in 3-4 years. We saw 3 of them,
2 Bald Eagles, one each Golden Eagle, Red-tail, and Ferruginous. Quite a lot of
Horned Larks poplulated the roads, but no longspurs.

We saw one mystery flock of 100 or so birds. Small, sparrow/finch shaped. We
watched them on a brushy hillside as they leap-frogged over each other for 2-3
minutes. Far away, in poor light, we couldn't see them well. Then the whole
flock flew in a tight formation we-know-not-where. I had the impression of
rosy-finches, based on shape, call note, and behavior. Urling disagrees, so I'm
not sure what to report. Suggestions welcome.

Hugh Kingery
PS: Urling & I will work on responding to Nick Komar's challenge to name the 10
best birds of 2021.

With the daunting weather prediction, I've postponed the Denver Urban CBC from

Any of you who would like to participate on Wednesday and who haven't signed up

trouble - some of those leaders can't do their areas. So go ahead and contact
me. (You will still have to go the Audubon website to execute a Liability

[cobirds] Birds Aren't Real - Douglas

2021-12-12 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
Now that The Denver Post has explained that 'Birds Aren't Real" we have
noticed some interesting stuff. A drone perched briefly on our hanging flat
feeder, found it unstable, and flew off. Previously we would have called it a
Goshawk. And during the snowstorm, some space debris cluttered our lawn - we
would have said 16 Juncos.
Yesterday a mini-drone perched on Castlewood Canyon Road, and dropped down to
capture something and disappeared Otherwise we would have said Northern Shrike.

[cobirds] McClain Pit, Douglas

2021-10-29 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
This afternoon Urling and I spent an hour checking bluebird boxes on the
Winkler Ranch (inexplicably called "Castlewood Canyon Road, Lake Gulch north"
on eBird). We counted two magpies. Period.
Then we went to McClain Pit, on Castlewood Canyon Road; you can see its birds
in late afternoon light -- on mid-day, sunny days you can't ID the birds
because of the reflected light.
And -- a reward! We watched a juvenile Snow Goose swim by and haul up on shore
so that we could see all its field marks. The lake also had about 100 ducks,
mostly Lesser Scaup, some Buffleheads and Ring-necked, and two Canvasbacks.

[cobirds] Forster's Tern, Walker Pit, Franktown, Douglas

2021-10-18 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
After looking at these terns today, Urling and I convinced ourselves to call
them Forster's. The Black eye patch gets bigger behind eye but does not extend
to nape. Grayish wash on back of neck. No carpal bar. Light colored legs. Long
thin black bill.

[cobirds] Dcks, Franktown, Douglas

2021-10-14 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
Finally ducks showed up at the Franktown ponds today.
At Walker Pit, we saw 3 coots and 18 Redheads -- until Bald Eale flushed
them.At McClain Pit, 150 ducks shimmered in the sunlight so that we couldn't ID
them. I think diving ducks comprised most of them. We did ID 6 Am. Wigeon, 4
GWTeal, a Pied-billed Grebe, and 5 coots.

Now it started to snow here. Hooray!

[cobirds] Rattlesnake catches Towhee - Douglas

2021-10-06 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
During lunch today, Urling saw something snap at a ground-feeding Spotted
Towhee. Several other towhees and a couple of White-crowned Sparrows perched in
plum and oak bushes to see what had happened.
We went over to inspect and found a large rattlesnake starting to consume
a dead towhee. It rattled convincingly. In about an hour it started slithering
up our lawn to the cliffs above. It measured at least three feet in length.
We haven't seen this kind of action before -- a bit disconcerting when it
happens right under your bird feeders.

Earlier in the morning Urling heard, but didn't see, Sandhill Cranes moving
south.

[cobirds] Old Checklists - BLANK

2021-09-06 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
I failed to explain this clearly. Lots of agencies have published checklists
for people's reference. The pile I have consists of blank ones that these
agencies have published over the years. They would serve as an historical
record of birds recorded at these various sites.

Any thoughts on an appropriate depository for BLANK checklists?

[cobirds] Western Meadlowlarks - Front Range

2021-09-01 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
Denver Audubon received a note from an observer in Central Park, who says that
she hasn't encountered Meadowlarks this year. We Cobirders do well in posting
what we do see, but not so well in discussing what we don't see.
As far as our patch here in Franktown (Douglas) we have about the normal
contingent. They sang quite a bit in June, and have tapered off since then, as
usual.
Do any of you have any thoughts?

[cobirds] Douglas - yard birds

2021-09-01 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
I just compared our August 2021 records with those for the last 3 years.
This year we saw no Western Bluebirds, and only a few Mountain Bluebirds. Also
only a few Tree Swallows; in 2018 we had lots of swallows of several races,
though not in then next two years.
Another species that has declined - believe it or not -- Red-winged Blackbird!

A rather odd August, I think.

[cobirds] Chipping Sparrow, Douglas

2021-08-19 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
We saw our first Chipping Sparrow of the fall going to our (rather
dilapidated) water feature this afternoon.

We also have a family of White-breasted Nuthatches buzzing around the yard, a
passel of junior Spotted Towhees, and a family or two of Black-headed
Grosbeaks. A Yellow Warbler continues to sing in a copse in the gully of Willow
Creek, and we continuously hear several Lesser Goldfinches there.

[cobirds] Weekend birds, Douglas

2021-05-17 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
What a great joy to return from Seattle to find a mass of birds around our
home patch -- and here, us able to identify them (mostly).
Most impressive: Swallows on Castlewood Canyon Road: 500 Cliffs, 75 Trees
(eBird alert), 50 Barns, a few Rough-wings, Violet-greens, and one Bank. A
Bullock's Oriole; Great-tailed Grackles, one at McClain pit, one at Walker pit.
At home, 2 House Wrens, 5 Black-headed Grosbeaks, 5 Western Tanagers, and best
of all, 3 Lazuli Buntings.

Today, 8 singing Yellow Warblers, 8 singing Song Sparrows, a Yellow-breasted
Chat, 3 Orioles, 4 singing Am. Goldfinches, 2 Eastern Kingbirds and Say's
Phoebe. Yet hardly any swallows!

[cobirds] Bluebirds and phoebes - Douglas

2021-04-16 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
Urling & I just came back from a rewarding trip to the Franktown post office
-- and Walker & McClain gravel ponds.
In the Walker Pit area, we counted 26 Western Bluebirds;  8 Mountain Bluebirds
perched and fed on an island in the pond. Most amazing: a dozen Say's Phoebes
feeding over the water like swallows. We watched for 25 minutes as they flew
back and forth -- and we didn't see them stop on shore to rest.

The pond itself had a modest assortment of ducks, but also one Franklin's Gull.
Along Willow Lake Drive we counted 2 Western and 2 Mountain bluebirds, 2
phoebes sallying over the pond like swallows, and 37 robins.
Maybe the bluebirds will snap back from their scarcity in March and early
April. We feel encouraged to see today's groups.

[cobirds] Bluebird dearth

2021-04-07 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
We have not seen many bluebirds this spring, so I compared this year with the
three prior years' data. This year we have seen only one or two of either
species only once in a while. The last 3 years we saw them almost daily
starting in mid-March.
This drop seems striking, at least along our road and on the trail we walk
regularly. Have others noticed this pattern?

[cobirds] Breeding Bird Survey routes available

2021-03-22 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
We invitequalified observers to participate in the Breeding Bird
Survey “BBS.”Participants must have the skills to identify the likely species
on theirroutes by sight and by sound.     Since 1966 (1968 in Colorado
and theWest) the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (originally US Fish &
WildlifeService, now the Biological Research Division of the US Geological
Survey) hassponsored the Breeding Bird Survey program to monitor birds across
the US (andCanada, with the Canadian Wildlife Service). In 2019 volunteers ran
almost 3000routes in the US & Canada.Scientists use BBS results to derive
population trends forthe species that the system samples well.
Coloradohas 132 designated BBS routes, and we consistently run more routes than
allother states in the U.S. except Texas and California.     A BBS
routecovers 24.5 miles. Observers record all the birds they hear and see during
a3-minute stop, then drive a half-mile to the next stop. You run the route,
onceonly, during the peak of the songbird singing season, from May 25 on the
plainsto July 15 in the high country. The ability to identify species by sound
iscrucial--I record 75-85% of the birds on my routes by sound, not sight.
Theobserver should have the ability to identify, by sound and sight, most
of the species likely to occur along thatroute. On my routes, I identify over
75% of the birds by sound, without everseeing them. We seek a commitment
ofthree years, because the BBS prefers route data run by the same person forat
least 3 years.     Email meif you would like one or more. The following
list is organized geographically(sort of). I hope that we can fill most of them
with qualified observers whohave good ears.     Thefollowing lists the
available routes; I can send more detailed descriptions toyou if you’d like to
consider one but want more information. I know it’s old–fashioned, but I use the
DeLorme (printed on paper) Atlas to locate routes.     Key to

[cobirds] BBS on for 2021 !!

2021-03-06 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
BBS office just announced that the BBS field work will resume this year. It
also said, "Safety has always been a top priority for the BBS program and
remains so. Much of this upcoming season will operate as in years past but
there will be additional guidelines for observers to follow that will ensure
that the BBS is conducted in a way that protects personal and public safety.
For most observers, these additional measures will not be onerous but there
will be restrictions on social gathering and the crossing of international
borders, for example, that could result in some routes not being sampled. This
is an acceptable tradeoff given the circumstances. We will provide a list of
safety measures to coordinators and participants via email soon."
If you would like to take on a route, please contact me directly.

 Colorado BBS Coordinator
Hugh Kingery
PS: I need the email address for one observer, Dan Maynard; if anyone can

[cobirds] checklist compiler tool

2021-01-15 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
You can also import lists to eBird from Excel by using the Import option. It
requires that you:   *  Use a Comma Separated Values file (when you open Excel
files, go to the box after File Name which ordinarily says 'All Excel files' --
click -- and then click on the first line, "All files.")
    * Fill in the top 14 lines. (Leave Lines 2 & 3 blank; you don't have to
fill in Line 14)
    * Have no blanks otherwise    * Use this date format:  "11/14/2020 "
    * Start the bird list on Line 15.

|

It also allows you to enter several counts one one file.
I can send you a template if you would like.

I've used this for years (and for 1000s of checklists).

[cobirds] Denver Urban CBC - Denver, Adams, Arapahoe

2021-01-12 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
This summarizes the results from our 33rd Denver Urban CBC; we still have
a handful of birds to tweak, but this provides an accurate picture of our
count. We covered all but two sections (which might have changed the raptor
totals), with masks & distancing and fewer counters.    We tallied 39,887 birds
of 91 species: fewer than average birds (40,069), more species than average
(84).
Several 'Yard birds' exceeded averages, though not because of more feeder
reports. We had high counts for
Blue Jay (80),
Black-capped Chickadee (465),
Bushtit (115),
White-breasted Nuthatch (93; highest ever cf. previous high of 60),
Brown Creeper (15),
American Goldfinch 946),
Pine Siskin (35),
Spotted Towhee (34, ave. 8, highest ever); also
W. Meadowlark (111),
Red-winged Blackbird (1234).
Duck numbers declined below average, but Hooded Mergansers continue to
burgeon (210, the 3rd highest count cf. an average of 101).
We had low counts of Ring-billed Gulls (643, 2nd lowest), Starling (1705
vs. 4307 ave.), House Sparrows (206 vs. 1361 ave., 3rd lowest) and House
Finches (668 cf. 1178 ave.)    We tallied an average number of raptors (that
included 81 Bald Eagles) and fewer ducks than usual (several lakes covered with
ice).
Unusual species included a Northern Cardinal seen near Cherry creek Res.
State Park by Joey Negrean and a Swamp Sparrow at Rocky Mtn Arsenal NWR, plus
two count week birds, Harris's Sparrow and Golden-crowned Sparrow.

[cobirds] Black Forest CBC (Douglas, El Paso, Elbert)

2021-01-10 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
On the Black Forest Christmas bird count, on Jan. 3, we covered the usual
places with the usual amount of effort, so I think we can fairly compare to
prior years. My records show this as the 50th count, with the first one in 1957
-- initiated by Dick Beidleman.
This year we counted 34 species, 1156 individuals, both below the averages
of  35 species & 1574 individuals.
     We found more than the average for these species: Downy, Hairy, & Flicker;
Steller's, magpie, and both chickadees; White-breasted & Pygmy nuthatches; and
Red-winged Blackbirds. We had an almost record for Black-capped Chickadee (46
-- in 2012 we had 47.    We recorded below average numbers for crow, Horned
Lark, Red-breasted Nuthatch, starling, and House Sparrows (none this year).
In our section the ponderosas had no cones, so the count of Pygmies (132)
surprised us; the count has had as many as 180. The count this year recorded no
crossbills.

Have other seen this bird? Does it remain?

Did it escape from somewhere? Does it qualify as a 'wild' bird?

Subject: Probable Red-necked Grebe - Walker Pit - Douglas county

Urling and I just spent a half hour looking at a probable Red-necked Grebe, at
the far north side of the Walker gravel pit near Franktown.

It had the shape of an RNGR, with a particularly noticeable long, pointed,
dagger-like, yellow to yellow-orange bill. Size of a goldeneye but slimmer.
General pattern matches the winter adult.
Its Ggay cap fades to whitish below the eye. We looked for & could not pick out
a whitish vertical patch behind the eye. Gray-black back; whitish breast when
it rose to wave its wings. But also: a white wing patch that showed
consistently; RNGRs have white secondaries but none of the field guides show
that on a bird on the water.
It resembles the winter adult shown in an Eastern Peterson field guide that we
have.

It floated along the water, dove occasionally and caught food.

[cobirds] Sandhill Cranes - Douglas

2020-10-15 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
Yesterday at least 5 flocks of cranes flew over our house, most of them a mere
100, but one that spent 5 minutes swirling overhead had 650 in it. Today 3
flocks -- one seen with about 75 cranes.

And with the cold temperatures, we spent only 2 hours outside - late morning -
and didn't pick up any. Our coup for that walk: a Golden-crowned Kinglet that
we both saw clearly. Several flocks of Bushtits, and we have about a dozen
White-crowned Sparrows on our driveway & yard.

[cobirds] Turkey Vulture kettle, Castlewood Canyon - Douglas

2020-10-01 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
An addendum: while I was watching for fly out from the main night roost for
summer resident Turkey Vultures (and expecting some migrants to be using the
same vast night roost area),  other CPW Raptor monitors were watching from a
more southeasterly location — and counted more than 300 TUVUs in thermals over
Castlewood Canyon SP. An occasional Swainson’s Hawk and Northern Harrier were
also in the thermals, but more than 99% were vultures. Sunday into Monday was a
most significant migration day for vultures and it was the highest number of
any autumn day in several years when we have monitored. These included the 172
I counted leaving the roost.

Karen tried to send this yesterday but it bounced.

We reported 175 migrating Turkey Vultures Sunday afternoon, and that Karen

morning and counted 174 leaving the roost there.

Yesterday Cheryl Thompson reported that, on Sunday afternoon about 6 pm, she
saw 175 Turkey Vultures moving south over her home in Arvada. I wonder where
they might have gone to roost (she says probably not Crown Point).

[cobirds] High-flying migrants - Douglas

2020-09-27 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
45 minutes ago, while re-potting hummingbird plants, Urling heard
migrating cranes. Over a half-hour, at least 4 flocks of 50-100 cranes flew
over our house as they circled south. Quite high up and hard to find and to
hear, under the gray clouds.
But then - the most amazing sight: tens of Turkey Vultures started pouring
over the cliff north of our house, heading south to a place where all of them
started circling (searching, we suppose, for better air currents). We watched
them for 15 minutes; we estimate 130 or more passed over. Probably more like
175-200 vultures. We watched them for at least 15 minutes. A couple of tardy
ones came by 15 minutes later as I type this message.
Well worth standing in the cold temperatures & wind to watch this
enchanting spectacle.

[cobirds] Sick birds, Douglas

2020-09-25 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
In the last week we saw a sick House Finch and a sick Spotted Towhee.
Accordingly we quit putting out the feeders for a week or two, in hopes that
our feeder birds might disperse. So far with limited success. We see only 1-2
House Finches (15 = a recent high count), BUT the towhees continue to probe the
ground under the former feeder locations -- 9 yesterday, 7 today. With them, 3
White-crowned Sparrows (newly arrived) & 3 Gray-headed Juncos. An occasional
chickadee, white-breasted nuthatch, and scrub-jay.
At least our alternate walking path has lots of species. Species typical of
our area - 3 nuthatch species, 2 chickadees, 3 jays; lots of towhees, robins &
solitaires. A few warblers - Wilson's & Orange-crowned but no other species.
We still keep close to home due to Covid & polluted air (trying not to add
to our air pollution).

2020-09-19 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
The Solitaires arrived! We heard one tooting 3 days ago; counted 2 and 4
the next 2 days, and so far 2 today. A few of them singing.    This morning two
Eastern Bluebirds perched on a power line in a neighbor's yard, flew down to
snare something, and then flew on. Probably at least one yesterday, but not a
decent look like todays.    A Rock Wren in our courtyard this morning, and a
couple about a week ago near the bluebird power line.
Otherwise a mostly normal collection. No migrant juncos yet (only 2
Gray-headed). In our yard Blue Jays have decided that they like our acorn crop,
and our feeders. We have at least 6 scrub-jays, 6 Steller's, and a bunch of
magpies.    On another neighbor's driveway, where we walk many mornings, we
count up to 20 Pygmy Nuthatches each time. A lingering catbird (not today); a
few Wilson's Warblers (3-8), but no other warblers (even though I keep thinking
Townsend's or Orange-crowned).
