Just an FYI, I tried calling the hotel just now to get the last night of my
reservation changed to the conference rate, and the representative said
there are *not* any more rooms available for Thursday night, Feb.12th.

So yes, can you please ask about expanding the block of rooms when you meet
with them tomorrow?

The word from the Hilton as of 6:00 PST is that we have rooms available at
the following days:

2/7 - 4
2/8 - 11
2/9 - 19
2/10 - 9
2/11 - 5
2/12 - 2
2/13 - 0

I can verify with them tomorrow and see what we can do about expanding the
block.  We've only just met (or are about to meet?) our obligations, so we
haven't been in a big hurry to bump up the numbers.

I would encourage you to negotiate with the hotel directly if you're having
trouble, and we'll do what we can on our end.

the conference rate, but couldn't get Thursday night at all.  So based on
suggestions on the C4L email about the hotel, I called them directly to get
Thursday night added.  They did add Thursday night onto my reservation, but
only at the regular higher rate - they said the conference rate was not
available for that night.  I had seen a message that people were working on
expanding the blocks, but hadn't heard any updates.

If the hotel block is expanded, especially for Thursday night, can someone
confirm?   I still need to call the hotel back so they will change my
Thursday night price to the conference rate.

The Collections and Archives division at the University of Arkansas at Little
Rock (UALR) is seeking highly-motivated professionals to join its team and

Librarian/Assistant Professor (R99683). UALR has recently undergone academic
restructuring that aims to position the university as one of the top
metropolitan, community-engaged, research universities among the 16 member

This position is an important part of the university's plan to create a
library and archives unit that contributes to student success in a community-

Hi Tania, we recently set up a locally-hosted instance of OJS. We have had 
previous experience with implementing and customising open source software; the 
downside of which involves high maintenance overheads and a more onerous 
upgrade process . As we don't have the resources to manage another 'needy' 
piece of software, one of our objectives with OJS was to use it 'out of the 
box' and make only essential changes, including those configurable through the 
user interface. While OJS is certainly usable under this model, there are some 
issues which we've had to find workarounds for. For example, default copyright 
text can't be changed without directly accessing the underlying templates, so 
we've set up separate copyright pages instead. We had issues with Shibboleth 
and LDAP, so have to use OJS's own authentication system; which isn't always 
compatible with the way journal owners prefer to operate.

It is a bit frustrating not being able to make simple tweaks to templates etc; 
however, our past experience has been that even the most simple of tweaks leads 
to requests for more, and before you know it, you're stuck with a 
highly-customised software that makes upgrades a nightmare.

The software is OJS and can be found at https://pkp.sfu.ca/ojs/

The link you used points to an third-party hoster of that software.

My experience with locally-installed OJS installed 'out-of-the-box' with 
half a dozen journals (some doing retrospective digitalisation, so 
reasonably large) has been great. Two upgrades have gone very painlessly.


As with most open source software, most of the development is left to 
individual users to do (or to pay third parties to do). For example I 
reported that the MARCXML output is completely useless and got this 
response: http://pkp.sfu.ca/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=9019 On the 
positive side, I have the tools to provide better MARCXML, on the 
downside, I have to wrangle the time to do that.

Tom,

I just read through your ppt and looked at  your splash site.   I was pretty 
confident that some libraries would have already done something as I am looking 
for, but did not expect the work done to that  intensity and extensity.  Good 
job.

So, the SM becomes Kent state's property, right?  In my library's situation, we 
would not need features like: authenticate users, workflow or role assignment, 
review, etc.  At this point we need some basic elements as I listed in my first 
posting.  If possible, we may first enhance the parts regarding data analysis, 
stats visualization.  Anyway, your presentation and sample pages give me some 
concrete ideas as how our pre-ordering system would look like.  By the way, I 
develop the web apps in .NET environment.

Thank you and will consult with you when I come back to work on this project 
next semester.  Have a wonderful winter break and Merry Christmas!

At Kent State in recent years we've built a system, Selection Manager (TM) , 
that does all these things and much more.  In addition to the five items below 
in Kelly's request, it allows folks to see everything under review.  If you're 
authenticated with campus credentials, you can access trial URLs and passwords, 
enter scores and reviews, see scores and reviews from throughout campus, get 
alerts to item status changes,.   Staff can track basic license parameters, 
track multiple vendor quotes, assign workflow components to other 
staff,.export the license and bib info into the local ILS,...  Search by 
subject, vendor , title,... sort for all active trials,...etc, etc, etc

We have used Selection Manager in production at Kent State for several years in 
Technical Services and don't know how we lived without it.  The thousands of 
emails are gone and every request/quote/trial/decision/evaluation/score/fund 
suggestion/ etc is tracked in Selection  Manager.

Funny that Kelly says " this is before an order goes into the ILS." When the 
system was under development, my project name for it was:  Pre-ILS.  I chose 
the name to indicate that the system was designed to track all the selection 
work that happened BEFORE an item found its way into the ILS.  For years now 
I've said that Pre-ILS, now Selection Manager, is the ILS module that the ILS 
vendor community forgot to build for the past forty years !!

At the public, non-authenticated page, you can only see the simple level.  
Campus authentication is required to see trial info and submit scores.  Library 
intranet access is necessary for the staff side and the workflow operations.

Over the years, I've shown Selection Manager at lots of conferences, and, all 
modesty aside, folks uniformly love it.  As I approach retirement, I've been 
showing it to lots of vendors and telling them to just take the ideas and build 
it out.  Have shown it to III, ProQuest, EBSCO, etc.  ...nobody has agreed to 
proceed, even though I say all I'd want in return is a steak and a martini.

*I propose that we make Selection Manager into an Open Source project of 
the Code4Lib community.  (We wrote it too fast and hard-wired it in to too much 
of our existing automation; hence,  it's not on GitHub.) We could organize a 
team, write the specs, abstract things out to a level where the system would 
have modules that allowed everything to be configurable for a local install.  
The current system is about 10,000 lines of PHP and was about a man-year of 
work.  I'd guess that we'd want a team of about 5 selection/acquisitions folks 
to review/write/refresh the specifications and about 5 developers to work as a 
team to build out the thing.  Then we would ALL end up with a rich system that 
was hugely helpful.  And, we'd end up with a community of devoted developers 
and users who could support each other and the system going forward.

Of course this sounds like a wacky idea, and, yes, I'm an old software hippie 
by nature,but, let me know if you're interested in the project.

I have both a locally hosted and a "cloud" hosted Mediawiki install.
The cloud hosted one is a one-click install on DreamHost. I am pleased
with DreamHost as a hosting service and use it for other things
including Wordpress and dotProject. Incidently, I also manage a
Hostmonster hosted wordpress install and have had no problem with them
although I haven't used Mediawiki on their service.

Hi Jeremy,
I was recently recommended to Digital Ocean for simple low-cost hosting and
have been quite pleased with the service. They also have some very
easy-to-follow documentation and instructions for setting up all sorts of
basic server-side software including mediawiki

(this is for Ubuntu Linux, but there are many other OS available too.

Huh, had not read RFC 6125 before but "Move away from the issuance of
so-called wildcard certificates (e.g., a certificate containing an
identifier for "*.example.com")." certainly caught me by surprise. I've
purchased a few certs in the past few months (including for our EZProxy
instance) and the issuer was still using CommonName and happy to issue
wildcard certs. And we haven't run into any SSL cert warnings with current
versions of Chrome or Firefox.

Can you provide more details about what you're trying to do and where
you're getting reproducible issues?

For EZProxy, our wildcard cert has a CommonName of *.proxy.example.com ;
proxy requests look like
http://login.proxy.example.org/login?url=proxied.url.example.com ; the user
is them redirected to
https://login.proxy.example.org/login?url=proxied.url.example.com to login,
and on a successful login they are redirected to
https://proxied-url-example-com.proxy.example.org

So far, so good for us. Should we be expecting trouble?

*.*.foo.com sounds unlikely to work in practice, as the answer provider
