Thanks for letting me know, we're back now. The disk had filled up.

I don't think I have Slack notifications for Code4Lib on my phone, so I didn't
see it for a while. I will change that...

Re: [CODE4LIB] code4lib.org account issues.

2015-11-19 Thread Wick, Ryan
Hi Brian,

I just activated your account, so you should receive another email with a link
to login. I apologize for the delay. You can email me directly if you have any
further issues.

To recap, when someone signs up for a new account on code4lib.org, it has to be
activated by an admin. It's in the system, so that's why you can't use the
email again, but it's also not activated so you can't use Request New Password.

We're really just screening out spam accounts. While voting is open and many
people are signing up for new accounts, the queue gets watched pretty closely.
Other times, not as much. But I'll definitely work to make sure everyone who
wants to vote can and has enough time to do so.

If anyone else signed up for an account in the last 2-3 weeks or so and hasn't
heard anything please contact me and I'll get it taken care of.

All,

I'm having account issues on code4lib.org.

When I attempt to use what I believe my username is it says "The username
bdgregg has not been activated or is blocked".

When I attempt to "Request new password" it says "Sorry,
bdgr...@pitt.edu is not recognized as a user name or
an e-mail address".

When I attempt to "Create new account" it says "The name bdgregg is already
taken, The e-mail address bdgr...@pitt.edu is already
registered. Have you forgotten your password?"

How do I go about resolving this as I'm not sure where I'm exactly stuck at
except some sort of purgatory?

Thanks,
Brian.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Creating account on code4lib.org?

2015-09-30 Thread Wick, Ryan
Hi Sylvain,

On the newer version, clicking the "I am not a Robot" box sometimes gives a
popup box to pick images, and sometimes not. I don't know if any popup or
Javascript blockers interfere with it. Someone else reported a problem with it
today, although several people have new code4lib.org accounts, so it doesn't
appear to be an issue with the plugin or site configuration.

You (and anyone else) can send me what username and email you want to use and I
am happy to create an account manually for you. This email or

Going to http://code4lib.org/user/register to create an account and entering

But I didn't really entered an answer as the form is now using the new

To vote, visit http://vote.code4lib.org/election/28, review the proposals, and
assign points to those presentations you would like to see on the program this
year.

You will need to log in with your code4lib.org username and password in order
to vote. If you have any issues with your account, please contact Ryan Wick at
ryanw...@gmail.com.

*Voting will end on Friday, December 6, 2013 at 11:59:59 PM PDT.*

The 10 proposals with the most votes will be guaranteed a slot at the
conference. Additional presentations will be selected by the Program Committee
in an effort to ensure diversity in program content. Community votes will still
weigh heavily in these decisions.

Hi Kevin,

Thank you for the suggestions.

c) I'm torn on. I understand what you mean, but this list or IRC (or even

Subject: [CODE4LIB] more suggestions for code4lib.org

While we're making suggestions for improving the infrastructure of
code4lib.org, here are some things I'd like to see improved:

a) Change the "email" link in the navbar (and in the text at
http://code4lib.org/about ) from

https://listserv.nd.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=CODE4LIB&A=1

to

https://listserv.nd.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=CODE4LIB

so that people can easily find the list archives and poke around recent
messages before deciding whether to join.

b) Modify whatever code sends formatted job postings to this list so that it
includes the location of the position.

c) Add a contact link so people have a clear place to go to reportadministrivia
like point (a) above or broken links. It might go to whichever users have
admin privileges on the Drupal instance behind code4lib.org.

Thanks for your consideration,

Kevin

[CODE4LIB] Code4Lib wiki - new account creation disabled

2013-03-18 Thread Wick, Ryan
For the time being, I've disabled new account creation on the Code4Lib wiki,
since essentially all new accounts are for spam. I can still create accounts
manually, so let me know if you need one. Others with 'Sysop' privileges can
also create them by logging in with your user and filling out the Create
Account form.

I will gladly open it back up around events or regional meetings, such as the
Virtual Lightning Talks and Code4Lib North.

Just a reminder, the wiki and associated accounts are completely separate from
the main Code4Lib site at code4lib.org.

Re: [CODE4LIB] wiki / spam

2013-02-10 Thread Wick, Ryan
Hey Dan,

I don't think the email confirmation was slowing any spammers down, frankly. It
just caused more problems for legit people. There were already dozens of new
spam accounts coming in every day, it's just easier to see them now since
they're now included in the log.

The most effective thing so far was putting the page title blacklist in place,
which blocked over 90% of the spam pages. I'm ok with the spam accounts being
there if they're not actually creating spam pages. And the ones that get
created are rarely linked to from any of our pages, and I try and get them
cleaned out every day or so.

I've got a "watch" set up on the Main Page as well so I get an email whenever
it is edited.

I'm satisfied with how things are currently working.

2013-02-06 Thread Wick, Ryan
Yes, several people don't seem to even get the messages in their spam or junk
folders. And I don't see a way I can say "confirm this user's email anyway".

For now, I've disabled email confirmation on the wiki. This won't help if you
need to reset your password (so still email me your account info and I can take
care of it) but should let others get started easier. Also you can try a new
account with a different email address, such as Gmail.

Hope this helps.

[CODE4LIB] code4lib wiki upgraded

2013-01-28 Thread Wick, Ryan
wiki.code4lib.org was just upgraded to Mediawiki 1.16 (anything newer requires
a PHP upgrade first). This will allow more modern spam-fighting extensions,
such as Spam:Blacklist.

Also, email address confirmation is now required before editing pages is
allowed. This doesn't seem to be as effective as I had hoped though.

Things look good so far, but let me know if you notice anything that isn't
working as expected.

I don't see how to vote. There's a "Show all descriptions" button that does
nothing when clicked and 7 links that do nothing when clicked.

Switching CSS off (Firefox: View: Page Style: No style) lets me see the designs
and also a sign-in form.

So I'm guessing that maybe we need to be signed in, so I've filled out the form
at http://code4lib.org/user/register but it redisplayed the same form with no
confirmation message after clicking the "Create new account" button. But I
just got email from it, so I guess it worked.

I'm unsure if the list is the best place to send this, but there's no "help" in
either site's navigation and it's somewhere to let people know how
difficult/confusing I'm finding this vote.

Thanks for any help you may offer,

Re: [CODE4LIB] Mentorship Program

Hi Shaun,

That page was mostly for me to keep track of upgrades, especially with regards
to plugins. Although most of the major upgrades still haven't happened, I don't
know that that page is entirely up-to-date.

Cary contacted me about working on the Drupal upgrade, and I'll work with him
shortly on it, I'm pretty busy this week.

I don't know that it's a great task list for others to work from. There's many
more content/page maintenance things that aren't on there.

Hi Rosalyn,
I agree that we should encourage women to step up and mentor other women at
Code4Lib. I also see the pairing of women mentors with women mentees as
fitting into an overall mentorship program, and I would be interested in
collaborating with you and others to help frame it out.

I don't think it needs to be very formal, but it would be important to give
some structure to it so folks know what they are getting into, how to make sure
everyone meets their goals, and measure the effectiveness of the program in
terms of meeting code4lib goals (such as increasing diversity, getting more
volunteer help, etc.). We can start a wikipage to start to flesh this out,
unless folks would like to use a different forum.

In addition to the RailsBridge workshop, I was thinking that Code4Lib community
projects would be a great way to both learn and recruit future volunteers. I
was also trying to find the list of maintenance projects wiki page that someone
(Jonathan?) was referring to as being top priorities for Code4Lib. Is this it?

Thoughts?

Re: [CODE4LIB] Creating accounts for voting

2011-11-23 Thread Wick, Ryan
Glad to hear you got help with your account.

I'd prefer that someone having registration issues just email me directly, at
ryanw...@gmail.com It's much easier for me to track. IRC is fine too, I'm
usually there, but I do sleep from time to time.

Account approvals are a manual process. Several people have the permissions to
approve users, but I'm the only one that gets the new registration emails.
Right now, since voting is open, I'm checking it pretty regularly, but if you
haven't heard back in a day or two you can send me an email.

Also, if you haven't yet registered for an account on code4lib.org, when you
do, if you can include your name and/or website on the form I would appreciate
it.

Thanks.

Hi list,

I had a bit of trouble registering an account on code4lib.org in order to cast
my votes. I got an email saying my account was pending approval, but approval
seemed to be a bit late in arriving.

I dropped in on IRC to ask for help, and "edsu" was kind enough to help. Thank
you.

If you have similar problems, don't hesitate to drop in on IRC or send an
email, since valid registration sometimes get lost in a barrage of spam
accounts.

HTH. HAND.

Best,

2011-06-15 Thread Wick, Ryan
Thanks for offering to help. I agree about the need to upgrade, and this is a
pretty quiet time to do so.

I'm guessing the theme will need to be done from scratch. It was already
cobbled together.

I'll try and send you some more information later today. If anyone else really
wants in on this, let me know.

That's me!

It is probably a good time to move this to a newer version, perhaps Drupal 7,
if for no other reason than security. The only downside is that the theme would
either need to be recreated or change. No biggy, really.

If someone wants to send me the code and a DB dump, I will do it in my

[CODE4LIB] Code4Lib Wiki - anonymous edits disabled

2011-04-12 Thread Wick, Ryan
Anonymous edits on the wiki are temporarily disabled. You should still be able
to edit pages when logged in with a wiki account, which anyone can sign up for
if you don't have one yet.

Spam has been bad the last 2 weeks, but today a new wave came with edits every
few minutes, many of them extremely destructive. Disabling anonymous editing
seems to have stopped it for now.

[CODE4LIB] Conference presentations and files on code4lib.org

2010-02-24 Thread Wick, Ryan
There are now separate pages for each presentation linked off of
http://code4lib.org/conference/2010/schedule

These have (or will have) more information, links, contact info, and eventually
video. Those will also get linked off the main schedule page as well. Like last
year: http://code4lib.org/conference/2009/schedule

We want a copy of the slides of all presentations to store on code4lib.org. If
you want to link additional versions at Google Docs or Slideshare that's fine.

Some of you have sent in or posted your presentations and I linked most of them
up already.

Presenters with user accounts on code4lib.org (not the wiki) should be able to
add links or other info and upload their slides to code4lib.org. Look for an
"edit" tab at the top of the page when you're logged in.

You can also email me the files directly at ryanw...@gmail.com

This doesn't all need to happen today (Thursday) so please don't flood the
network. Sometime this weekend or next week is fine.

Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for a great conference!

Any thoughts on making this list something more dynamic, web 2.0ish? I
think the list could be even more useful if one could do some sort of faceted
search on the information.

Looking at the not-viable list it seems that many of the entries were
considered not viable due to lack of support. It might be more useful if some
sort of "level of support" ranking could be used rather than just deem some of
the tools as not viable. If a particular open source app is really useful, but
lacks support, it *could* be viable if someone discovers it, and finds it
useful enough that they're willing to start support it.

reCAPTCHA keys are tied to a domain name by default, but they also offer
global keys. From an admin page:

If you wish to use your key across a large number of domains (e.g., if

You may want to use a descriptive domain name such as

Casting a net far and wide on this, sorry.

We're using EZproxy to proxy a website that also happens to have
reCaptcha on it.

I guess reCaptcha keys are tied to domain names, so when the Javascript
is brought into the page via the tag, it sees that the page
is 'proxy.example.edu' instead of 'www.vendorsite.com', and we end-up
with an error from reCaptcha saying:

This reCAPTCHA key isn't authorized for the given domain.

That all makes sense. But can anyone fathom a workaround?

Looks like there's a Mediawiki extension that uses GeSHI too, so this
could be another option.

What about something like the GeSHI filter module for Drupal?

http://drupal.org/project/geshifilter

http://www.code4lib.org/ is already running Drupal, so it'd be as simple
as installing the module (although I've never used it, so it may not be
what you're looking for). This way we're not supporting another
application and gives a reason for going to code4lib.org anyway.

Re: [CODE4LIB] presentation files

2008-03-03 Thread Wick, Ryan
A few people have higher privs on code4lib.org/drupal and have posted a
few of the slides already.

Adding a file attachment to a node works, so people should be able to
attach slides to the presentation nodes. That's disabled for all but the
admins right now. I'd be in favor of opening this up to the
"authenticated"/approved users, which is pretty much everybody with a
legit account.

Also, looks like commenting is also turned off.

Shell accounts would be great, but I don't think they're needed for
linking to or attaching slides.

I think for now if you get the data to jaf, he and I can work out
getting them put on the site. I'm waiting for him to stand still for 2
seconds so we can talk about creating shell accounts for people on the
code4lib.org server. Maybe now that the conference is over... :-)

Re: [CODE4LIB] Code4Lib http irc channel

2008-01-07 Thread Wick, Ryan
Your nick showed up in the room earlier today, and a few others have
been using the linuxinlibraries.com site, but it does seem to be a
little flaky.

This site worked just now when I tried it: http://ircatwork.com/

Hi folks -- for some time now I've been unable to use the http irc
channel, which is the only one I can use at work. ("If you can't install
a client, or if IRC traffic is blocked on your network, connect through
the web at linuxinlibraries.com (choose #code4lib)")

The error I get:

"Not Acceptable
An appropriate representation of the requested resource
/cgi-bin/client-perl.cgi could not be found on this server.

Apache/1.3.39 Server at www.linuxinlibraries.com Port 80"

Sometimes I get the irc screen but if I type anything in I get the error
page again.

Just wondering... (oh, and gave the conference scholarships a plug last
night on my blog)

Re: [CODE4LIB] Portland library geeks?

2007-05-17 Thread Wick, Ryan
I live in Hillsboro, a bit outside of Portland, but I may be able to
make it. Tomorrow night I'm unsure of, Saturday is probably out,
although Sunday afternoon/evening might be good. Let me know what times
work for you.

I was at Code4Lib 2007 but I don't believe we met.

I went to add my lightning talk and I went ahead and added all of the
Friday presentations listed on Ed's blog.
