Can the United States be broken into states? I don't think Alaska and the
stuff in the middle matters as much as the map suggests.

   So:

 - Put a page on the Openmoko wiki about your project

 - "Hello, remember me? I'm from the project at openmoko.org, and
we're trying to set up official support for your hardware on this
   platform."

At the very least, you should get out of them a list of
requirements that they need in order for you to work with them (NDA,
money, incorporation, single point of contact...)

Freerunner wallpaper

Sorry everyone. This message (posted last Monday) was stuck in the
moderator's queue due to size. Subsequently, I created the
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Wallpaper page and attached my wallpaper
graphic to that page. I didn't expect this message would actually reach the

for GTA02v6, you'll find that the v6 is the mass production version...

Using gmane with openmoko mailing lists + thunderbird

2008-06-20 Thread Ben Burdette
I found that you can 'subscribe' to mailing lists as newsgroups with
this news.gmane.org list-to-nntp server. I was able to subscribe to and
then download all the headers for the 12 or two openmoko mailing lists,
in just a few minutes. Pretty cool. This is using the Thunderbird news
client.

I can't seem to figure out how to reply to messages using this interface
though. I was able to do it to the gmane.test 'newsgroup' (list?).
However, it doesn't really work for the openmoko lists. Anyone had
success with this?

While it appear the user sent the message once (same message ID and
first received line), the google http server (10.151.60.2) sent two
copies 27 seconds apart. There is nothing openmoko can do about this.

It would be interesting to know if all the duplicate messages came
from users using gmail.

2008-06-20 Thread Larry Riedel

I guess this could be taken as subtly suggesting
the use of forums, since that infinite string of
emails could be in its own thread, with people who
are interested reading and replying there without
people who are not interested telling them to stop.

I personally had been able to ignore that thread
because I can easily tell my mail reading software
to ignore a thread, but since the message "Enough
already" was not sent with the same Subject, and had
neither an In-Reply-To or References indicating it
was a followup to that thread, it showed up as a
new thread, so even though I was easily able to
ignore those emails, I had to see "Enough already".

The first time that you post a message to a group, gmane sends you an
email to confirm that your From: address is valid. You have to reply to
that before your original message will be posted. If you don't see this
message, check your junk-mail folder.

You may also have to wait a couple of hours for posts to show up. I
don't know if that delay is on the gmane side or if it's the Openmoko
mailserver.

Convert Freerunner CAD Files - IGES or STEP?

2008-06-20 Thread Christmann, Hans C
Hi List,

I just recently got interested in the Neo Freerunner and am (I guess as
everybody here...) very excited to get my hands on a copy of it...

Since I was planning on not necessarily utilzing the Freerunner as a
phone, I am messing around with the CAD files which are available on the
openmoko website. I found some emails related to the files but was not
sure, if anybody already did this, so here is the question again:

I have access to Pro/E and am willing to convert the Wildfire 3 files into
something else. What do you prefer? IGES (Wireframe or Solid?), or STEP
(Wireframe or Solid?)?

I will check this thread again Monday and then decide on which way to
go...

Thanks for your feedback.

Claus

In both your posted cases, cc.helsinki.fi and hotmail.com sent the
message twice to openmoko. Nothing we can do. There is a possibility
that openmoko dropped the connection or issued a 4xx code, but still
delivered the initial message. In those cases the sending server
would retry, creating two copies of the message. But that would be a
pretty bad bug in exim and I can't image how they could mis-configure
exim to do this.

That couldn't be the case in the previous gmail headers I looked at.
The message was duplicated while still in the gmail network.

I don't have any need for the CAD files myself, but yesterday someone on
IRC was looking for an open-source program that could view them. Blender
apparently has the ability to import .slp files from Pro/E, so it might
be nice to have that in addition to IGES or STEP.

If you have the files as IGES or STEP you should be able to convert them
to DXF yourself.

I'd like to see both IGES and STEP conversions. Solids would likely be
better than wireframe, but I think people would have to try and open
them in their respective CAD apps to see what works well.

Ordering Free-for-all?

2008-06-20 Thread John Gorkos
I'm a little curious about how the ordering process is going to work, come the
first week of July (fingers crossed) when the Freerunner GTA02 hits the
distro centers in the US and Europe.
Is this going to be like buying Hannah Montanna tickets, where the entire
supply evaporates within the first two minutes of the site coming on-line?
Is there any kind of pre-ordering list that people who have been lurking
around the mailing list since last June can get on, to avoid the throngs that
will suddenly be interested as soon as Slashdot announces the Freerunner is
available for mass-purchase? Just how many of the little beasties are
actually going to be available in the fist shipment from China?
I'm all for free-markets, but I've also deferred presents for two fathers
days, a birthday, and Christmas waiting for the GTA02, and I'd hate to get
trampled in the mad rush on "opening day" and wind up having to wait for
shipment two, or three from China.

Blender is more of an artistic program than a CAD program. I would
suggest looking at Salome (OpenCascade), gCAD3D, MEDUSA, or possibly
BRL-CAD. All of those are free (although some require registration) and
should be able to perform conversions to files Blender can read as well.

warranty for 10 pack purchases

2008-06-20 Thread Robin Paulson
i've seen this question come up a couple of times on the list, but
it's not been answered fully:

if we buy a 10-pack of freerunners, i assume they will come with a
warranty. how do we as individuals deal with warranty returns? will
there be 10 receipts in the box, or one?

having one makes things very difficult - it means whoever has the
receipt then has to pass it on to anyone who has a problem with their
phone. and i'm sure the organiser of each group purchase doesn't want
to be held liable just because his name's on the delivery slip

or will openmoko keep a record of serial numbers and purchase dates,
so receipts aren't necessary to confirm when they were bought?

Of course, this is really just us all being really bored and anxious
as the phone's already hit production, yet continues to be
unorderable.

Can we prepay to reserve specific serial #s of phones? That would be
fun. It'd keep us busy.

Dibs on #42. Or #[0-9]*0*42 as they aren't likely to start at exactly 0 or 1.
