But is there anyone who tried it with debian?

Yes, me (have only Windows at work). I got a bluescreen once, but it never
happened again... But somehow I can't get a internet connection (network
works only between FR and Host), so I created a debian VMWare, and pass the
USB device to the VMWare. Then I enable NAT network for the VMWare and
enable USB networking _IN_ the VmWare. This works pretty well :) Network is

 An interesting method.
I was able to manage this by doing:

http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Talk:Neo_1973_and_Windows#Another_maybe_quite_unsecure_method_.28WinXP_Professional_32_Bit.29

Hope you understand what I wrote there.
It worked for me with SHR, Om2008.8, Om2008.12, Debian.
The Neos in here http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Dhmoko do that all day
 long! :)

I can't test your configuration. The port of my switch will be shut down if
I enable the connection sharing (port security). But I can offer you some
English descriptions for your Wiki entry.

- Systemsteuerung = Control Panel
- Netzwerkverbindungen = Network Connections
- the network adaptors are in EN Windows are normally called Local Area
Connection
- Eigenschaften = Properties
- Erweitert = Advanced
- Gemeinsame Nutzung der Internetverbindung = Internet Connection Sharing
- Anderen Benutzern im Netzwerk gestatten, die Internetverbindung dieses
Computers zu verwenden = Allow other network users to connect through this

So you may update the Wiki section with a proper translation :)

[debian] Accerlerom. stop on movement, known issue / only for me?

2009-02-02 Thread Daniel Spies
Hello,

I remember there was a thread about accelerometers in Debian and I think
they should not work correctly. I can't find it any more. So I recently
played around with the accelerometers using Debian and found _some_ output
from both /dev/input/event2 and event3. It seems not to be realistic what I
receive from the hexdump, and when I move the FR the whole Output is stuck.
This also happens when I use the python or perl script from the wiki. So I
just wanted to check if this is the behavior caused by the accelerometers
not working yet? Or are accelerometers in Debian fixed and this is only
happening to me?

Thanks and best regards,
Daniel

Well, a few months ago, before I have a FreeRunner I saw a LightSaber
application for the iPhone, I thought was neat.

So, I made My own for the FreeRunner Yesterday.

 Here is the link
 http://filmsbykris.com/freerunner-debian/ko-user/ko-lightsaber.tar.gz

 How to install:
Just un-tar it to your root directory and it should place everything where
 it needs to be
and give you an icon on your desktop.

 What it does:
Start the App and the phone sounds like a LightSaber Extending and then
 Humming (You know, Like StarWars)
Swing the Phone Around and it sounds like you're having a LightSaber Fight.

 Features so Far:
Sound, Vibration, and The Power Button LED flashes Blue on Swings.

 Todo list:
Work on the GUI (Currently just a big exit button)
add buttons to extend and retract Saber ( so you don't have to exit the
program to stop the sounds )
And some sort of graphic or image of a Light Saber.
 Add More sounds
Have buttons so you can choose the color of you lightsaber.

 Bugs:
Sometimes while exiting, if you are still swinging the phone around, the
LED and/or the vibrator will stay on.
If this occurs, start the app up again and then close it with out swinging
 the phone around.
I believe I can fix this with ease. I just wanted to get what I have done
out before I continued working on new things.

I got the sound fx off a free sound fx website. Don't know who made them.
I hope it is ok that I used them.

[FSO] issues using fso images / no wireless

2009-01-21 Thread Daniel Spies
Hello list,

as I still cannot compile FSO on my machines I tried to use the already
build images provided by [1]. After flashing the kernel and rootfs I could
easily boot und setup my FR. Now it seems there is no Dialer and/or Contact
application preinstalled. I wanted to install them from the repos, but
after establishing a connection to a wireless network it turned out that
doesn't work at all. I got my IP address and 'route' tells me the default
gateway is set properly. But no packet seems to go out... So, anyone know
if there is a known issue with wireless on the current FSO builds? I'm
ready to flash again if I did something wrong, if you help me. I didn't use

[FSO] compiling with FSOMakefile 30+ hours?

As I didn't receive the cards yet, I cannot assure this service is

When I receive the cards I will let you know for those who don't want to

receive them. Maybe just wait for my report... It also may be the price
will change at any time...

Hi Nicolas,

Yes, I see now the price is changed.

The card is indeed plugged in a memory stick adapter, but you can remove it

quick help for freerunner noob, terminal/wifi missing

2009-01-16 Thread Daniel Spies
Hi all,

I received my Freerunner today and after loading the battery I flashed
everything (kernel, rootfs and u-boot) to the 2008.12 release. Work's
pretty well, except I can't find a termin/console and cannot find any
possibity to access wireless networks (as I am not at home atm I can't use
USB). So is it normal for 2008.12 to not have that much apps installed per
default? Did I miss someting when flashing? I can't find any issues like
mine searching Google, and it seems the Wiki doesn't handle this issue as
well. It would be great if I just could get access to the terminal like I
could in the previously installed 2007.2... Any hints?

Thanks a lot!
Daniel

haven't used 2008.12, but previous 2008.* didn't include much apps
so you'll need usb connection to install terminal

Out of date, please update me

2009-01-14 Thread Daniel Spies
Dear community,

I am in the list now since before the release of GTA01 and used to read
most of the messages. After the release of GTA02 a huge flame war started
and after some mails regarding the future of OM I was unsettled and decided
to wait for a while. The amount of mail per day increased and I could not
read all of them any more. So now I'm really not up to date and am not sure
what's all about.

I hope someone could answer me a few questions... :)
 - I'm developing a lot with OpenGL these days, is there any way to get a
usable 3d performance on the GTA02 today/plans for the future?
 - Is there any major issue with the GTA02 hardware (e.g. possibility of
getting destroyed hardware by the battery or whatever)
 - I know staff won't tell me much about GTA03, but I hope to just get the
information if the case design will be different? I'm fine if one could
tell me if it will be _not_ egg-shaped and will have _no_ hardware keyboard
(just like the GTA01/02 but not egg-shaped). I don't like the design...
Maybe there is a rough painting or something?
 - What about the OS thing? When I stopped reading there were messages
saying the core of OM will be decided and programmed by OM internals.
What is the status now, what is done by OMs only?
 - Maybe there is a information page about the GTA03 and I just didn't find
it, is there?

To prevent people from flaming about my questions about GTA03: It's 90%
sure that I will buy a GTA02 as I was searching the web for weeks and could
not find any other device like the FR. And as I still use my Nokia 3410
it's time to get a new mobile device now. GTA03 is not available yet, so
there's only the GTA02 left. I just hope to have a preview on the GTA03 to
decide if I will look for different devices or just wait for the GTA03 to
come out after getting the GTA02.

Thanks for all your comments!

Cheers,
Daniel

Re: Whats up with the freerunner mass production?

2008-05-20 Thread Daniel Spies
I would like to know that, too. I have pretty good connection to China and
Taiwan, so I could easily arrange to get a Freerunner directly from there...

If you plan to ship phones to China from the US (or anywhere else) you'll have
to get an CCC certificate in order to get this working properly... Another
method could be hand-carrying ;)

Another point is the power consumption at 500 MHz. Not worth it, too.

Hi list!

I wonder if it's possible to run Openmoko on other handhelds than the
Neo/Freerunner. Actually I need a new phone ASAP. As I already mentioned I
don't need the complete functionality immediately. Making and receiving
calls would be enough...

I already searched the web for some kind of phone-comparer, but the only
one I found did not offer the filters I need. Does anyone of you know a
phone
with the following specs? The Freerunner covers them all, but is still not
available. If there's any smartphone covering the specs below, and we could
run Openmoko on it, please let me know!

Must have:
- Wireless Lan
- GPRS/EDGE/UMTS
- Bluetooth
- GPS
- USB with host-mode
- High Quality Stereo Soundcard
- High Resolution Touchscreen
- Less or no Buttons
- Fast CPU
- Not too less memory
- Extensionslot for SD/microSD or whatever

Nice to have:
- Acceleration-sensor
- DVB-T Receiver
- Multitouch
- Camera
- 2 Sim slots

I'm not sure if I missed something...

I can assure you that people inside and outside the company are very

Clarify openmoko != Neo1973

2007-08-24 Thread Daniel Spies
Dear list,

I often read sentences like I think I'll buy an Openmoko in comments to news
about Openmoko and the Neo1973. So how could we clarify what Openmoko
actually is (a Linux distribution), and what it's not (a smartphone).

Even the commercial website of Openmoko (openmoko.com) leaves the impression
to me of Openmoko being a smartphone instead of being a Linux distribution
*for smartphones like the Neo1973*.

Well, at least this is my impression...

Best regards,
Daniel

PS: I guess all these news are from members of this list. So maybe you could
add a sentence to all your news? Something like:

Openmoko is a linux distribution developed for mobile devices. The first
device it will run on is the FIC Neo1973.
