Refer to

and
http://git.openmoko.org/?p=qtopia.git;a=commit;h=eb855af76018bedf6a89b9ac736d2ffa3961932b

It doesn't change alsa, but uses AT+CLVL instead.

The filenames under daily/testing is as it is now because Sean
specifically requested these to be 'simplified' many times in the
past. Not sure if Ray wants to change it again.

The versions of the kernel packages in the system could be obtained by

opkg list_installed | grep kernel

I think it would help to clarify the situation.

Hi BillK,

Your version of python-etk is correct so this doesn't seem to be
related to upgrade. Can you try
exposure.py -f run
and paste the results just like in

Notes about the current testing image

2008-12-11 Thread John Lee
Dear community,

Here is the note I kept about the current testing image. Part of it
was already in the status update I sent before. I modified a bit to
match the current situation and put it here so it could be archived.
Please remember that since it's not in stable repo, it is a subject to
change. What I wrote here only applies to the testing image for the
last couple days.

Upgrade from Om2008.9
-

Note: you can also flash new image in
http://downloads.openmoko.org/daily/testing

Note: only upgrade from a clean Om2008.9 image is tested.

sed -i -e 's%Om2008.8%testing%' /etc/opkg/*.conf
/etc/init.d/xserver-nodm stop
screen -DR
opkg update
opkg -force-overwrite upgrade
# please ans Y to all questions
# the sshd (dropbear) will restart, so you need to reconnect and do
# 'screen -DR' again
opkg upgrade # just in case
shutdown -r now

To get the fastest boot time you also need to remove the following
packages:

opkg remove task-base-nfs task-base-smbfs task-base-bluetooth \
task-base-usbgadget avahi-daemon avahi-autoipd blueprobe \
usb-gadget-mode portmap exquisite exquisite-theme-freerunner \
exquisite-themes

Known problems about upgrade

* Dropbear restart during opkg upgrade

* some obsolete packages (like kernel modules) still left in system

* will purge your incompatible e config, so you might need to set
  stuffs like suspend time again.

Known issues

* usb network won't work at first boot if you flash new image (#2096)

* Illume sigsegv (#1767) - make sure you use asu theme if you use
software_16 engine. If you want to use illume theme, you must
switch to 'software' engine via illume config (in the upper shelf)

* must remove 'ro' in kernel boot parameter if you use sd boot.

* Most of the http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Om_2008.8#Known_Issues
  are still there.

Changes related to the dismissed optimization team
--

#1267: echo AT%N patch applied, credit of Treviño

#1489: qtopia volume bar

#69: boot time scripts. Some qtopia modifications as well.

#1347, #2113: userspace suspend/resume

Touch screen driver enhancement: see
http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/devel/2008-October/002822.html

#2031: Scroll list enhancement.

There are still many todo items left on my list and some items half
done, but we didn't have enough time to finish them all. Sorry.

Echo

No definitive software solution yet. A way to improve it is:

control.4 Speaker Playback Volume in
/usr/share/openmoko/scenarios/gsmhandset.state

the max value is 127, 95 works best on my neo. With volume level 3 or
4 in qtopia dialer, the other side can only hear a minor trace of echo
while I get good audio quality.

John

I shouldn't say gta03, I should say the next generation software we
are going to use. Since people will switch to that software with
their freerunner (gta02), it makes more sense to put more resource
to work on that. My writing wasn't accurate enough. Sorry about that.

Optimization team update (11/30 ~ 12/06)

2008-12-07 Thread John Lee
Dear Community,

Team status update:

As in
http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/community/2008-December/036792.html
(send/receive files via bluetooth in NEO), Erin keeps working on
bluetooth. Jeremy fixed some qtopia and location bugs, and will
continue learning more about kernel. The GTK redraw problem is fixed
now (#1946) so Julian will be back to help with the Paroli edje files
and keeps working on python. Olv is having kernel fun now, but since
it's gta03 related, you probably won't see him a lot on the public
kernel list. Tick mostly worked on opkg this week. Basically there
are two big issues:

* Incorrect behavior: as Tick indicated on devel list, there are still
some logical error in opkg, which caused some problems during
upgrade. That's why I have to use the -force-overwrite option in my
  previous upgrade howto.

* Efficiency: opkg is obviously not very efficient, both in memory and
  in speed.

Maybe we could expect another opkg release soon.

Qtopia:

OM is moving more focus to gta03 now, so my current resource for
qtopia is fairly limited. Currently the things I want to fix most
are:

* UCSD problem
* Window focus (soft menu disappear, problems when multiple sms come
  in, etc.)
* Partial import of sim contacts.

Please suggest if anything missing and I'll arrange my priorities.

There are several good things worth mentioning last week:

* The infamous WSOD (#1841) seems to be solved. It's already in
testing repo. Praise for all helped in this!

* GTK redraw problem (#1946) solved along with similar problem in qt
with an illume patch. Thanks, Raster!

p.s. It seems my last update might have created an impression that
the only way to try the testing repo is to upgrade from Om2008.9.
It's not true. Another way is to flash directly from
http://downloads.openmoko.org/daily/testing/
if you don't mind reflash the phone.

another p.s. Someone in OM kindly reminds me that my post can create
inappropriate impressions, because although the logic is correct, the
words and tongues might be misleading. My native language is Chinese
(and I'm a master of words and tongues in Chinese), so it's kind of
difficult for me to enhance this. All I can do is encouraging you to
go ahead and ask if anything unclear, and keep in mind I'm a Taiwanese
engineer when you read this. ;)

John

openmoko-phoneprofile-data is already in Om2008.9 so I wonder why you
have qtopia-phone-x11-profile-data installed.

I would like to know how many people need this. My resource for
qtopia is very limited and I need to decide what to fix first.

* disable the qtopia keyboard

* enable the illume one if it still doesn't show up. you need to hack
eet file because wrench doesn't work.

Once wrench works this will be pretty easy though.

actually it's quite easy to bring back the wrench and the qwerty
buttons in asu theme. it's not the real issue though.

wrench: it's a gadget to put on the illume 'shelf'. so just add it
back into the config then it will show up. something like this
(haven't tested):

the real problem is, after you click on the wrench, it will show the
config menu, but click on any one of them will give you black screen.
probably black fonts on black background. I hope someone can find out

This doesn't seem like #1766, and I've just received a sms in
suspend... Could you file a ticket? Please attach the following if
possible:

* upgrade from Om2008.9 or flashed daily image ?
* output of 'opkg list_installed'
* logread
* the modified qtopia config file, if any.

That's #1742 and it's still open. Testing repo will switch to new
kernel, and wifi driver will be in once it's ready.

I don't have enough knowledge to comment on it. The second section
seems strange to me though, because it assumes files will be installed

by autotools.

Could someone please review it? If it's okay I'm going to apply it to

I'm in a dilemma here. Either I have to put in a lot of resource to

No, it's not the conclusion. We will keep working on that. I just

Okay, I will think about this. I think the only real limitation here

then that, any software based solution is possible. Let me dig this
deeper with the kernel and hw people.

sorry about the settings problem. we fixed multiple problems

raster's illume default theme (illume-theme-illume,
illume-config-illume) provides the same functionalities with a very
different look. OM's theme will remain as it is like our designer
wants it to be. you are free to switch between these two though, by
setting it inside /etc/enlightenment/default_profile.

Just checking:

Do you have moko-gtk-engine and moko-gtk-theme installed ?

Yup, but it won't make opkg remove the unnecessary modules. It's a
problem that needs to be solved in OE.

I think it's related to Olv's new boot scripts. I have rough idea
about why but this can be better explained by him.

116 was the old value I use before I updated the alsa state file from
FDOM. There was no/very little echo, but the other side always
complains they cannot hear me very well. I also feel the receiver
(handset speaker) is unnecessarily loud sometimes.

The new alsa state file uses 116, but boosts the mic path a little bit
more, so it solved the "can't hear me" problem while makes the echo
even easier to happen. With the new state file, 95 is the best value
for me because I can always make it louder if necessary with Tick's
volume bar in qtopia.

That fix is already in testing repo, maybe over 1 month now. However
even with this patch there is still chance you can hear echo.

Let's say A calls B, and B is using a neo with this fix.

1. The receiver (handset speaker) is loud enough and the mic is
sensitive enough, so gsm won't turn off the mic.

2. A starts speaking right after B, but gsm needs a little time to turn
   off mic.

In either case you can still here a little echo. Much better then
before, of course, but still a little. I was talking about 1. in my
previous post.

I think it's not shipped yet, so maybe it exists only inside openmoko.

Optimization team update (11/23 ~ 11/29)

2008-11-30 Thread John Lee
Dear Community,

As Sushama (our new testing team member) indicated in
http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/devel/2008-November/003493.html ,
we won't have a release in Nov. Currently the testing team is going
to do a full test on the latest testing image. It has all the goodies
we did and a lot of improvements over Om2008.9, so please try it and
report any error you find.

Upgrade howto:

>From Om2008.9 it's recommanded to upgrade with the following steps:

sed -i -e 's%Om2008.8%testing%' /etc/opkg/*.conf
/etc/init.d/xserver-nodm stop
screen -DR
opkg update
opkg -force-overwrite upgrade
# (please ans Y to all questions)
# (the sshd (dropbear) will restart, so you need to reconnect and do
# 'screen -DR' again)
opkg upgrade
shutdown -r now

To get the fastest boot time you also need to remove the following
packages:

opkg remove task-base-nfs task-base-smbfs task-base-bluetooth \
task-base-usbgadget avahi-daemon avahi-autoipd blueprobe \
usb-gadget-mode portmap exquisite exquisite-theme-freerunner \
exquisite-themes

Known issues:

* GTK redraw problem
* some obsolete kernel modules still left in system
* must remove 'ro' in kernel boot parameter if you use sd boot.
* will purge your incompatible e config, so you might need to set
  stuffs like suspend time again.

Echo:

Since there are different hw versions out there (a5, a6, a7), it's
impossible to provide one alsa state file that suits all models.
However, it seems you can always find appropriate values for your
neo. My way is to adjust
control.4 Speaker Playback Volume in
/usr/share/openmoko/scenarios/gsmhandset.state

the max value is 127, 95 works best on my a5. With volume level 3 or
4 in qtopia dialer, the other side can hear no echo while I get good
audio quality.

Team update:

Tick helped to put his touchscreen improvement into stable-tracking,
he will work on opkg internals next. Olv moved to look into kernel
and fso. Erin will try bluetooth. Julian is working on the GTK
redraw issue, please help him out. Jeremy will fix some qtopia bugs
and keep working on suspend/resume issues.

John

OE will automatically find files in several dirs, one of them is
${PN}, so the bb file itself is actully correct. I have just tested
installing openmoko-calculator2 and the icon shows up alright, so you
might want to check if there is something else going wrong..

We're doing a full test on the testing repository now. It's still too
early to comment on the release thing yet, but I think even if there
will be a release, it's not very likely to happen in Nov. (11/27
today...)

Not much to say this week. Most of the work we did could be seen
by querying docs.openmoko.org with keyword 'Om2008.11' and the commit
logs.

Overall, Olv pushed his boot time enhancements (#69), so it will be in
testing repo. Tick enhanced etk scroll list (#2031) and is working on
a volume issue (#1489). Jeremy fixed another suspend ticket (#2113).
Erin worked on a qtopia camping problem. She will take a look at
bluetooth status starting from next week. Julian helped out our designer,
Will, to work on the edge files. Upgrade path is getting better but there
are still some issues (#2127).

We are having an internal debate regarding the release now, so there is
not much I can say about this at the moment.

Regards,
John

MicroXwin ?

http://www.microxwin.com/

"MicroXwin is binary compatible to the Xlib API. However it is niether
client server nor network oriented. Graphics operations are
implemented in the linux kernel via a kernel module. An open source
Xlib library sends graphics commands to the kernel. There is no
network overhead and no context switch from X client to X server. This
makes our solution smaller and faster than traditional X Windows."

Optimization team update (11/09 ~ 11/15)

2008-11-14 Thread John Lee
Dear community,

We're heading toward the next release of Om2008 now. The current bug
list could be obtained by custom query keyword 'Om2008.11' on
docs.openmoko.org. Our team will work on some of the tickets, smooth
out minor issues so the testing team could have time to test and
hopefully release before the end of this month.

To be more specific, we are working on the following tickets:

#69 speed up system initialization: Olv will merge his improvement
 into testing repo next week.

#1489 sometimes volume is too low during a call: Tick will implement a
 volume control in qtopia dialer.

#2031 scroll list implementation: Tick will improve etk_scroll_list to
 fit our designer's idea.

#2113 suspend time come up right after you change the time: Jeremy
 will look into this.

Other then that: Erin will keep looking into qtopia. Julian needs to
study more about the python loader.

John

Optimization team update (11/02 ~ 11/08)

2008-11-07 Thread John Lee
Hi community,

A brief summary of what the optimization team did last week:

Erin worked on qtopia to improve the network registering time.

Qtopia 4.3.2: camp network about 26~36 sec and it would display 'No
  Network' on screen before that.

Qt extended 4.4.2: 40 sec from qpe main() to Ready [black screen
  first, home screen 20 sec]

  Qtopia 4.3.2 + X11 [17 + 52 sec before, 52 sec -12 -20 = 30 sec,
  by applying two patches]

http://git.openmoko.org/?p=qtopia.git;a=commit;h=9f0eb58ab7cca96e90bd49845d23b10ecf7ba664

http://git.openmoko.org/?p=qtopia.git;a=commit;h=9c8c832f77f4f24adc5ad17f5031016ce8562a34

  FSO: 10-20 sec
  Google Android: 20 sec

Olv tried to replace u-boot by qi along with various improvements to
bring down the boot time to illume (without qtopia) to about 30 secs.
qi does not support dfu-util so only do this if you know what you're
doing. He dived into a lot of code reading to see if there are
further possibilities.

Jeremy looked into the two issues about suspend/resume that we may fix
in userspace. One is #1991, here is his update:

As I inspected, qpe and apmd opens /dev/apm_bios right now, and I
found two possible scenarios for this issue as below:

  1) in qpe, we need to wait for the reply of prepare_suspend for the
modem. in this case, we may need to wait for a period +of time that
exceed 30 seconds, and we don't know how long it could be, waitfing
  for the response from modem.

  2) It goes to blank, but then ompower doesn't get any request for
doing suspend. I doubt in some case, illume doesn't set +the
  suspend_delay timer.

for 1), I will go to check what does that mean by the AT commands we
  emit before executing "apm --suspend".

for 2), I will debug illume for a while.

Another one #1347 is about after the resume, it goes to suspend
immediately. For this one, it's because screensaver timeouts right
after the resume. We can fix this by invoking "xset s off" before
going +to sleep, and reset it after the resume. Though I am looking
into the possbilities of enabling apm in xglamo and checking the
apm_bios driver code to see if we can fix this in xglamo.

BTW, Matt has patches to solve ticket #1884. It works. Matt is
arranging them and he is going to update some information about it.

Julian wrote an initial version of python loader. It imports various
modules first, listens on dbus and forks on demand to execfile. This
brought down the load time of pyefl-sudoko from 2.59s to 1.38, a 46%
improvement, and om-settings from 3.99 to 1.60, 59% improvement.
There was already a daemon in Om2008 just for the sake of loading
om-settings (and it cleverly sleeps for 4 seconds before starting up,
make the booting even slower), we take it out to get the 3.99 number.

It is just a start, there are many issues left regarding the python
loader and we will keep working on it. Once the code is in a better
shape Julian will put it into our svn/git.

Tick mainly worked on the upgrade path this week (#2109).

John

configuration (wrench) -> engine

Status update from optimization team

2008-10-31 Thread John Lee
Dear community,

On the organization chart we were called 'optimization' team so I put
this in the subject, even though my ideal name would be something like
'Keroro' [1].

Olv and Erin provided an experimental fastboot images for the
interested to try:
http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/devel/2008-October/002950.html

Jeremy reported his status:
http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/devel/2008-October/002882.html

Julian is still struggling with oprofile, python, etc. etc. along with
distro tasks. With nobody offically assigned to distro team this
seems never end.

Check out tick's work to the touch screen:
http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/devel/2008-October/002822.html
It's commited as abe8f448547d1bd69ac2963e07e2657f27b79691
and should be available in testing repo after next autobuild.

The illume issue (#2082) is partially solved now. It requires quite
some black magic in the theme and config files to make the icons show
up again. Thanks for raster's help on this. read more about this in:
http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/community/2008-October/034881.html

After seeing these cute icons, we found out only qtopia and sudoku
work as usual. Other applications such as installer, locations are
fully dead (#2098, #2099), while settings is half dead (#2097).
Tick fixed 2098 and 2099 in openmoko.git commit
6725b90d5c9d844da196485beca7d9e82f8ce68c

This efl update from oe.dev upstream really scared us, so the current
plan is to stop following efl svn until another efl snapshot/release.

The alsa state file is a real trouble. Since the audio quality
actually differs on different versions of FR, it's hard to create one
state file that suits all. We will keep working on it.

John

the way to fix this bug is not updating to another svn rev which might
introduce other unexpected behaviors due to the massive changes in EFL
recently. instead we stick to this 36882 and fix problems there.

I don't think we will upgrade efl rev before we have another efl
snapshot/release. following some random rev in svn trunk tree is
proved to be a very very bad idea.

the current stuffs in testing repo works for me and our testing team
and also for other engineers. so I bet there's something wrong in the
upgrade path or your theme/config combination.

the only supported combination is

illume-theme-asu + illume

if you got stuffs like illume-config, illume-config-asu, please remove
them. illume-theme-asu comes with both config and theme files. it
does NOT include 'qwerty' button and 'wrench' config.

I have also seen the illume default combination works:

illume-config-illume + illume-theme-illume + illume

notice that config and theme comes in different packages here. it
DOES include qwerty and wrench.

the way to switch between different sets of config and theme is to set
it in /etc/enlightenment/default_profile . this is ugly and
will/should be solved in upstream soon.

after you make sure your efl related stuff and illume related packages
are correct (check with opkg list_installed | grep illume), stop x
server, rm -rf ~/.e, start x server.

since the next stable release will be the first one that comes
directly from a branch of om.dev, the upgrade path from stable
(i.e. om2008.9) will need a lot of testing. our beloved testing team
will help.

FYI:

at the moment the 'settings' app in testing repo still got error (not
scrolling), this is a known issue. however one can still set the
suspend time.

Is Openmoko working on their 'back to basics' plan?

2008-10-23 Thread John Lee
Dear community,

http://onlinedev.blogspot.com/2008/10/is-openmoko-working-on-there-back-to.html

And please read my comment below. I have to say I don't like opinions
like this but I will take it as a result of high expectation. We will
keep sending to the public list once we have something, commit to
public scm, etc. but we certainly won't do _weekly_ release. For now
please be patient and let the engineers work.

Now for the status update this week:

Tick merged the qtopia echo patch (#1267), it works, no echo but the
audio sounds a little bit less 'vivid' (not sure if this is the right
word). He is now working on the touch screen usage, see
http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/devel/2008-October/002712.html

Olv and Erin is working on reducing boot time. Currently it's reduced
from 2:35 (Om2008.9) to around 1:40. One minute less in one week, and
Olv just got back from hospital last Monday. We will merge this into
OE once we get it organized properly.

Jeremy is working together with kernel guy (aka Matt Hsu) to look into
the possible improvement, namely take a screenshot and show it first
during resume. It's a common technique in mobile phone.

Julian is working on the python loader. He is new to python but he
got very good helps here in the office such as Guillaume, etc. He
still got some distro work to finish so it's going to take a while
before he can work full time on this.

Currently we have a major blocker #2071. It can be solved by update
EFL, but no icons will show up in illume. This seems to be a
different bug, but we are having an evas-native related issue on the
build server so the EFL packages are not updated correctly in
downloads.openmoko.org. This prevents people from confirming it and
fire another bug.

EFL ABI changed along with the svn rev increment last week, so
Installer and Locations won't work without rebuilding. Although
people already got reassigned, but nobody will give Om2008 love except
us and holger, so we will fix the issues above and update testing repo
soon.

John

Hi,

Thanks for starting this page. It's on my list but I'm too slow. I
would like to use it to reflect the latest status, so it will be
better if we *only* do the the discussion here on the mailing list in
the 'Back to the basics' thread. In the meantime, the current todo
list there was NOT written by me and will be updated soon.

Our plan is to bring qtopia to a more usable state then it currently
is before the next big thing - fso + tichy (?) + paroli , but
enhancements which could be brought to the new software stack will get
higher priority. People (including myself) still need to use the
phone before that. :)

I would like to explain a bit more about this:

We're not the only team that will work on the new focus. Stability
should be greatly improved by the effort of FSO, and boot time is just
another thing we would also like to improve.

At the same time, we will work on fixing qtopia bugs as well, so if
the problems you have is in trac already, we will look into them.

Back to the basics: improving user experience

2008-10-16 Thread John Lee
Hi,

Like Wolfgang said in
http://n2.nabble.com/Weekly-Engineering-News-41-2008-td1336450.html

We assembled a team to focus on improving the user experience. Here
is our todo list at the moment:

* Reduce boot time.

* Optimize the touch screen driver on freerunner for finger usage.

* A generic python loader to enhance the start up time of python
  scripts.

* Work with system team to improve suspend/resume user experience.

I would like to ask the community:

What do you want us to work on?

The idea is

* We improve the current stack, not creating new features.

* Prefer stuffs which could be brought over to gta03 instead of
  gta02/om2008 specific.

* won't work on om2007 stack.

So, tell us what you want, then the coding monkeys will start working!
:)

hey raster, i ported these stuffs to om.dev, so they should show up in
the testing repo soon. however, a few problems:

* the qpe keyboard will appear again and replace the illume default
after any reload operation, e.g. added a new desktop file. (showing
a small wheel on the bottom right of screen)

* same thing will happen if i do "killall -hup enlightenment"

* a reboot will put illume kbd back

efl rev: 35661
illume rev: 35693

any idea ?

What we are trying to do:

provide a OM repository and a community repository. in this
particular case, if in the end the illume still shipped without kbd
button, then the community will very likely provide another version of
illume called illume-kbd in the community repository. thus you can
replace the shipped illume with illume-kbd, and the next upgrade will
get the new version of illume-kbd instead of illume, so you don't need
to change it again after upgrade.

Where we are right at the moment:

illume is there.

the community repository is not ready yet but we're working on it.

the dependency handling of replacing the shipped illume with
illume-kbd is not ready yet but we're working on it.

My personal comment on this:

if the illume is so much more popular then illume-kdb (theoretically
we can know that from the repository log) or the other way around then
you bet that fact will be very effective in OM. ;)

Part of my current work requires me to use fso daily. It seems
strange that what I know seems to be different from what you know.

* fso does not force you to ASU or closely connected in any way.
  could you please elaborate?

fso: an open specification dbus interface (freesmartphone.org)
   + a reference design (frameworkd, check git.freesmartphone.org)

fso-image: fso + a reference python UI based on EFL.

asu: a enlightenment WM for mobile phone (illume)
+ qtopia phone stack (not based on fso)
   + installer (EFL)
+ diversity (gps app based on EFL)
+ exposure (config app based on EFL)

the only similarity i can tell is EFL in fso-image. but the fso
itself does NOT force you to use it, just the implemented reference UI
used it. it's easy to do another reference UI with GTK.

exactly what are tied together here?

i see the arguement here is probably 'fso makes anyone that wants to
develop on neo has to use this framework', but this is not true. it
can make some developers' life easier but you don't have to use it.

for example, you can just run the ogpsd subsystem in frameworkd then
use phonekit + gsmd to handle gsm if you want. on the other way
around, the frameworkd is just a reference design, anyone can take
libgsmd + gsmd to make the same interface on dbus. any app on fso
will not notice.

there are technical reasons behind the re-implementation of gsm daemon
but I'm not the one to answer it. I think the reason why you are
unhappy is that OM moved away from OM2007.2. well,

1. you are obviously not the only one who felt this way.
2. that's a separate issue.

since OM will stick with fso in the foreseeable future, I think port
OM2007.2 app suites to fso is a logical move. ogpsd is there based on
gypsy, and it should be just another backend of tangogps.

I like this sentence. if most of the functionalities on my neo have a
unified dbus interface then i'm happy. honestly i failed to see
anything wrong with this.

libjana isn't packaged in toolchain by default. the default
compopents are:

libmokogsmd2, mokoui2, mokopanelui2, mokojournal2 and dependencies.

we cannot package everything or it's going to be a huge toolchain.
however, there are 2 interesting aliases in environment-setup:

alias opkg='LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/openmoko/arm/lib
/usr/local/openmoko/arm/bin/opkg-cl -f
/usr/local/openmoko/arm/etc/opkg-sdk.conf -o /usr/local/openmoko/arm'

/usr/local/openmoko/arm/bin/opkg-cl -f
/usr/local/openmoko/arm/arm-angstrom-linux-gnueabi/etc/opkg.conf -o
/usr/local/openmoko/arm/arm-angstrom-linux-gnueabi'

which means by opkg-target we can add the packages we need into the
toolchain directory.

at the moment the content of

/usr/local/openmoko/arm/arm-angstrom-linux-gnueabi/etc/opkg.conf

is incorrectly pointed to local directories in build host. if we
replace it by the corresponding URIs such as

http://buildhost.openmoko.org/daily-feed/
http://buildhost.openmoko.org/daily-feed/all
http://buildhost.openmoko.org/daily-feed/armv4t
http://buildhost.openmoko.org/daily-feed/neo1973
http://buildhost.openmoko.org/daily-feed/om-gta01

then _theoretically_ we can just do

opkg-target update
opkg-target install libjana-dev

I haven't tried this approach before because OE suits me just fine.
however, for those who just want to make apps I think it's an right way
to start.

support win mobile

2008-04-01 Thread John Lee
Dear Community,

A decision has been made _today_ that Openmoko is going to support
Windows mobile. We, the distribution team, want to provide our
customers the maximum freedom in choosing whatever platform they want,
even the close source ones. We will make necessary modifications to
wine, thus enable win mobile on neo.

One specific Openmoko hardware is going to support Windows mobile.
It's the Neo Pocky. A prototype has been made and placed in our
meeting room for quite a while. Please check this url for intro and

Seems I don't have enough files in my local deploy directory. :)

Right now we have git hash in filename so the alpha sorting will not
be correct, so the function needs to be updated anyway.

Normally when I flash qemu I always modify openmoko/env to make sure
it gets the file I wanted.

It's on buildhost already:
http://buildhost.openmoko.org/daily/neo1973/deploy/glibc/images/neo1973/u-boot-gta01bv4-1.3.1+git0+b29661fc115106454288051bc9a488351ce8+svn4230-r3.bin

the default env used by download.sh and flash.sh should be able to use
the latest files automatically, so MokoMakefile will also work. I
think you can use these images (u-boot, kernel, rootfs) first and
update it by your ipkg/binary later to ease the trouble.

> Well svn up says revision 4241, and the bug is still there... :(

No, it's not. Check console-ansi.patch

http://svn.openmoko.org/trunk/src/target/u-boot/patches/console-ansi.patch

svn update the openmoko directory under /moko is not equivalent to
updating the package built from OE. maybe you can enable
moko-autorev.inc or download from the uri above.

Distribution weekly update

2008-02-01 Thread John Lee
Hi,

We're going to start a weekly report about what's happening inside the
openmoko distribution.

* cacao + swt make it possible to run things like
  jalimo-swt-example_0.1.0_all.ipk from
  http://jalimo.evolvis.org/repository/openmoko/all
They are both included in OM feed now.

  Check https://wiki.evolvis.org/jalimo/index.php/Packages

* `processing' can be run on neo with cacao + classpath-gtk but there
  are still many problems.

* Thanks to Gernot Hillier. gpsdrive_2.10pre4 works on neo.
  http://bugs.openembedded.net/show_bug.cgi?id=3670

* multitap-pad: replaced the original matchbox-keyboard-inputmethod.
Some might not like it but it's the first try and we'll keep working
  on it.

* asterisk is included and should be available in a couple days.

* biggest thing: Graeme successfully ported qtopia into OE and Rod has
  added it into MokoMakefile.

Please tell us about the cool things we missed.

Cheers,
John

Yes, I met this one before and I solved it by 1). This environment
setting is dumped and modified from OE but the way it uses LDFLAGS is
strange. However, if this got fixed, something other then kernel or
uboot might break, so I just leave it as it is.

I think if one wants to use toolchain this kind of problems will
always happen. To fully avoid it we have to use OE. For now the
users of toolchain will just have to customize it to fit their own
usage. I am thinking about dumping the run.* scripts OE generated
along with the source package to solve this but haven't got time to
really look at it.

Announce nightly build and source code packages

2007-12-27 Thread John Lee
Hi,

The nightly build is automatic now and could be found under
http://buildhost.openmoko.org/daily/

It pulls from monotone.openmoko.org, which means it will be a couple
days behind the mainline OE with some fixes to make sure OM builds.
It will also have moko-autorev enabled so it will always build the
latest OM related packages. So, if you want to use packages on the
bleeding edge, you could direct your ipkg to pull from here.

If a developer want to retrieve the source code of an existing
application inside OM, he/she had to check the OE recipes to find out
the exact download location, version and the patches on it to fix
bugs/compiling errors before. Now the orig and diff source tarballs
will be generated along with the nightly build. They could be found
under

http://buildhost.openmoko.org/daily/tmp/deploy/glibc/source/

Please report any bugs/feedbacks. Thanks!

John

Toolchain alpha release

2007-12-04 Thread John Lee
Hi,

Please check

http://downloads.openmoko.org/toolchains/openmoko-x86_64-arm-linux-gnueabi-toolchain.tar.bz2

It's the alpha release of a lean toolchain built on debian lenny,
x86_64. The source of openmoko-sample2 is included so you could
compile and install it on your neo. The tarball must be extracted to
'/' , and please read /usr/local/openmoko/arm/README .

As the name suggests, it's really in alpha stage, so please give your
feedback/ flame. Thanks!

The wiki page http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Toolchain is not updated
yet since we got (temporary ?) connection problems here in Taipei.

I would do a nearly clean build :

make update-makefile
make clobber-openembedded # using the new Makefile now
rm OE.mtn stamps/OE.mtn
make setup update all

It will take a lot of time, so I would do this before I go to sleep.

Hi Rod,

The oe snapshots site:

The monotone repository:

monotone.openmoko.org

I have done various tests on them such as run different versions of
monotone againest the database files, build from scratch with these
settings, etc. There might still be subtle problems in different
usage scenarios, so please give feedback and I'll fix them asap.

OpenMoko OE repository

2007-11-29 Thread John Lee
Dear Community,

The official OpenEmbedded repository to build the OpenMoko
distribution can be found at monotone.openmoko.org. If you're using
MokoMakefile, please refer to

http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/MonotoneServer#Using_MokoMakefile

for instructions about how to switch.

Quotes from wiki page:

Currently, monotone.openmoko.org serves the OpenEmbedded branch
org.openembedded.dev. In contrast to the main OpenEmbedded server
monotone.openembedded.org, the repository monotone.openmoko.org is a
couple of days behind. This is to ensure that the metadata is always
in a consistent state that allows you to build the OpenMoko
distribution.

This is part of the work from the tools team of OpenMoko, lead by
Mickey. The current repository maintainer is [EMAIL PROTECTED] .

Enjoy!

Cheers,
John
