This is now fixed in the latest qtopia image 080808 (haven't tried the
2008.8 openmoko image yet). This is looking very promising as a day to
day phone!

I observed this too, and filed a bug:

that's just the way it is on my "Sony Ericsson p1" and O2.
(But there they say it is a problem with O2-Germany. But no one knows
why no other handy has this problem ;) )
So i'm used to it, to have a buggy handy. and thisone wouldn't get
new Software-Fixes every day.

I am seeing forward to replace it with my Om2008.8/Freerunner .

Re: receiving SMS messages

2008-08-07 Thread W.Kenworthy
This is what seems to happen for me on 2007.2 on the Oz vodafone
network. Sent an sms (didnt ask for rx) to the phone after it had been
in dim&lock for a couple of hours. No indication of message - phone
didnt wakeup. On actually waking phone, by pressing pwr button some 10
minutes after sending the sms, the message received ring sounded as the
display became live.

As sms reception did wakeup the phone at some point, a bug has been
introduced somewhere that needs tracking down.

Re: receiving SMS messages

2008-08-07 Thread Bruce Adams
I've had the impression, on other phones, that the GSM network could
successfully deliver a message into the SIM card inside my phone, but if
the phone software was too distracted to hear the initial notification
from the SIM card about the new message, the phone wouldn't notice the
message until another message came along or something else happened
(such as rebooting the phone) that caused the phone to look for messages
on the SIM.

Is there a way to actively interrogate the SIM card for a list of
messages (instead of waiting around for a new message notification)?

- Bruce

P.S. I have to admit I have zero depth of knowledge about SMS, GSM or
SIM cards.

Hi Rob (and everyone else),
I did originally think this was what was happening, but It's definitely not the
whole picture. For one thing, the sender receives a delivery receipt even
though the text has not arrived. Ok, I hear you say, it could still be the
case that the network sends a delivery receipt when the text has not arrived
at the actual handset, but just the "queue". To test this, I intend to switch
my freerunner on, have a message sent to it whilst it is in standby, and then
plug it in and leave it on (not standby) for about six hours. I'll let you
know how I get on.

Is not possible, after the GSM is fully up, say to the network "I'm ready, is
something waiting for me?"

This could be a possible explanation of what's going on:

1. The network attempts to send an SMS to your phone.
2. The GSM chip receives notification from the network that there's an SMS.
3. The GSM chip says to the network: wait, I'm temporarily unable to
receive (as the phone's asleep) and wakes up the system.
4. The system comes up and waits.
5. In the meantime the network has accepted that the SMS can't be sent,
and puts it into some kind of wait queue.

It's up to the network what kind of exponential backoff algorithm they
use to decide when to resend. If the phone goes back to sleep before
the network attempts a resend, then the same events will occur at some
later time and the SMS will end up going back into the queue. Again and
again.

On the Optus network, and from my experience with my old phone whose
inbox filled up all the time, the time between retries can become long
quite fast. When a subsequent SMS is sent, this always flushes the
retry queue as well, which is why you receive several messages at a time.

Cheers,

Rob.

I can send txt messages with the Qtopia image with Virgin mobile
(Optus network) in Australia, but have the same problem that when the
phone is in suspend mode the messages do not appear.

Are you able to send OK with the Qtopia image? I can receive but not send.
Could be an issue with my provider which is T-Mobile. Haven't tested receiving
in suspend vs. awake mode but will try it.
