Well, it seemed to me like you posted quite a bit (and very
helpfully) to the news groups. But it could also be that when I
started reading Usenet (early - mid 90's) a good friend of mine had
just moved to Redwood City and so your sig line caught my eye

uk.comp.sys.mac manages to be pretty useful and spam-free, though
subject to a lot of OT posts that are of interest to the 50 or so
people who are the main posters.

My ISP now charges for newsgroups, but a server in Berlin charges just

Re: New Low End Mac email lists

2006-01-26 Thread Eric Rasmussen

I hope to eventually move other lists to Google Groups as well.
A browser based system would IMO be a bad thing for me and I
would likely have to stop participating if this list did move :-(
Google groups don't have to be read in-browser. There is still a
handy feature that allows regular old email to make its way to
your inbox.
If Google puts a lot of JavaScript into the list messages it will
really make a mess. Will all messages be delivered as HTML - a bad
idea.

Google Groups does not alter messages sent to the list in any way. No
JavaScript or anything else is added. Plain-text messages will be
passed on as plain text, HTML as HTML. The digests for English-
language lists go out as plain-text ISO-8859-1 (Latin-1).

Right now, there is no way to set a Google list to require plain-text
messages, but Google may be willing to implement such a feature if
there is enough interest. I'm involved with another list (Chinese
Mac) that has been beta-testing Google to fix problems with its
multilingual features so we can move from Yahoo, which has long-
standing issues in that area.

One major difference between Yahoo and Google is that Google converts
everything to UTF-8 (Unicode) for the online display. That is great
for a multilingual list like Chinese Mac, and I don't think it should
make any difference for a list like Compact Macs (UTF-8 is the same
as ISO-8859-1 for the Latin-1 character set). We've only been testing
for two weeks, but we have received prompt responses from the Google
engineers. We have identified one bug we need to have fixed and we
have one major feature request without which there's no point in
switching from Yahoo (we need to be able to have our digests go out
as UTF-8). So far, nothing has changed, but it's only been a short
while.

Re: New Low End Mac email lists

2006-01-26 Thread Mark
One decent use for gmail is using it to set up google
groups, and then you can get those messages emailed to
you in digest form. In Firefox I often have javascript
disabled and the gmail interface works fine. I imagine
if you were using a mac email client, you could just
have those gmails forwarded to your client address.

The comp.sys.mac.*** hierarchy is still around and reasonably active.
However, the proliferation of web based fora have significantly
dented the number and frequency of participants. It's sad because it
causes a dilution of the community and while you could pretty much
count on meeting everyone active in Macdom on the news groups, now
days, if you don't hit every website, you're going to miss some great
people somewhere.

I was quite active reading those newsgroups and now rarely visit. I
remember seeing Clark Martin's (a regular poster to this list)

Comp.sys.mac.wanted, which was the best, free place to exchange, sell
and buy Mac related stuff is pretty much dead now. Ebay killed it.
Or rather the sellers and buyers have all moved to Ebay. It's too
bad, because now you can pay huge fees to sell things (and indirectly
to buy things) that once folks bought and sold for free. Plus, if an
item was clearly bogus and listed in comp.sys.mac.wanted, someone was
sure to drop by and post a message pointing out the blunder.

Ebay claims that they offer security and protection, but I've had
more per-exchange problems on Ebay than I ever had in the news
groups. In news groups, if someone was a scammer, his name got
posted around enough to alert anyone willing to do a little
searching, pretty quickly.

I use Eudora 5.1 for lists and I would be unhappy if Google got in the way.
Yahoo groups work OK with ordinary email apps.

But then gmail is a total disaster and essentially doesn't work with old mail
clients.

New Low End Mac email lists

2006-01-20 Thread Dan Knight
We've created some new email lists, but they're different from the old
ones. We're using Google Groups, which means you can sign up, change
your status, and read postings using your browser.

I hope to eventually move other lists to Google Groups as well.

The Macintel list, which covers all Intel-based Macs, went live last
week and has 57 members. Once the MacBook Pro ships, we're ready to
launch the MacBook List. I've also set up a Mac mini List.

Details:

Macintel List:
http://groups.google.com/group/macintel
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Mac mini List:
http://groups.google.com/group/Mac-mini-list
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

MacBook List:
http://groups.google.com/group/macbook-list
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

You can join any of these lists, but the MacBook List will not go live
until the MacBooks start shipping in February. Until then, all
Mac-on-Intel discussion should be on the Macintel List.
