USB was never intended to connect devices of such power, it's not in the
spec. It's not the fault of the designers it's being used in areas it
should not be used in.

Actually, Western Digital now sells a whole line of 2.5 external USB
drives that don't even come with a power supply. No modern computer
should have trouble running one of these from a USB port. Or at worst
from a powered hub.
Watch out though. A client sent in a couple of these for us to copy

According to WD's website, their newer drives are coming with NTFS.
Presumably just a reflection that they're no longer greatly concerned
about Win9x systems.
I don't really care if they put a filesystem on the drives or not.
What bothered me was that there was no huge warning anywhere. Instead,

Some of the Mac Books had USB ports that were more powered than others. I
don't remember which ports but if you have trouble with one port try one on
the other side.

That's a surprise I use a couple of external portable harddrives that
only require one port.
Oh yeah I am using a PC so maybe that is why.

Hi Guys -
I would appreciate some info. I was wondering if a USB hub that comes with
an AC adapter would work without the adapter? I was wanting a NON-powered
USB hub for use with a laptop, but I was thinking if the powered hub would
work both ways then it would be better to buy a powered
Typically the power adapter is to provide the electrical power some
USB devices need to run.
Some memory sticks need the power to operate but printers and other
devices such as that do not. A Mouse might need power, especially if
it is wired.
You can buy laptop hubs for relatively cheap
I don't know, as I've always plugged mine in. USB ports really don't
give much power on their own, laptop ports even less.

Fred,
The way I understand is that it depends on the device. Some
devices need extra power, for those you will need to plug the hub in.
Others devices, like my printer, can be plugged into a non powered hub
and work fine. I would say get a powered hub and only plug it in when

When I tried to make a USB hub with a power supply work WITHOUT the

As we all know, computers are weird, devices are built to different
factory specs, and almost anything is possible in the wonderful world

Constance, I think you are violating list policy by actually answering the
OP's question.
That has been my experience, too. Perhaps because my powered USB hub has
lights to indicate which ports are in use. Perhaps not.
