Silverfast has many fans and supports a wide variety of scanners...

I have had good luck. A recent Epson scanner that was purchased
runs beautifully
Which OSX are you referring to?
In Leopard and Snow Leopard you use the native OSX Image Capture program to
utilize your scanners features. My HP 7310 works just fine once I made the
adjustment to using Image Capture.

I have a swell little scanner ...travelscan 464 ...it comes, of course, with
a cd...well, it includes presto image manager which is slow/cumbersome; on
my laptop the scanner shows up with microsoft image manager software and
works like a champ (winxpprosp3) ...I have no idea how it got that way.
You probably shouldn't really need to install a driver at all in
WinXP. Though, there may be some special hardware features (e.g. an
instant scan button) that would require proprietary software.
So, just uninstall Presto and use something else. Or leave it
installed and use something else. Maybe
There are two components to making a scanner work.
First there are the drivers that communicate with the software and
the scanner. Then there is the software that will do it.
Unisntall Presto and download for free Irfanview.
I am not sure if Gimp does it but you can try that also. Both are
We also have a 1XL, which is great. But, it has a physical feature on
it that is a problem for me. There is a small pop-up stem on the back
side that determines whether the transparency unit is installed or not.
Why not just remove the pop-up switch and locate a toggle switch to
control
Thanks ...I'm gonna try that ...the original version 6.0 works fine on my
xpPro laptop with the original drivers ...upgrades as far as 6.16 and newer
drivers didn't help on my desktop ...maybe the uninstaller is there for a
reason!!
Also consider that the order in which things get loaded onto the
When you say loaded do you mean at boot time?
No. Install time. If older stuff is loaded after newer stuff it can
overwrite new modules with older modules, creating a mess.
If you mean the order in which things were installed, I did a roll
back and tried it again with no luck!!

Did you install Presto! or is it bundled with your scanner? I see they

I dunno. Sounds like you've touched all the right bases. But one
thing's for sure: next time you install the OS, make sure this unit is
the first thing you get functioning *before* you install updates and
other software. And check it periodically as you do so to narrow down
the problem.

I don't know of any studies on scanner life span. You may be able to
check a few of the top scanner maker's web sites for specs, which can
help a little. I would think a five-year replacement plan would be a
good one, though. Look also to see how often major improvements are
introduced and how
Depends on the scanner. A $49 scanner is not durable. A $ scanner
will probably last until it is technically obsolete. If you spend $
to buy 200 $49 scanners and discard one every month, they will outlast
the one $ scanner.
Has anyone done a study on the average life of a scanner?
Tom you are right and you are wrong.
There are all different types of scanners.
A $49.00 scanner might be just right for the once a quarter, maybe
once a month scanner.
But it will not be right for an institution that must scan a
multitude of documents, small books etc. all the time. They

Since this went out of production about 3-4 years ago, it won't be in any
