No. MAC addresses can be sniffed in network traffic and spoofed. Not sure
anything is bulletproof. It's just a matter of how important the info is
and how bad someone wants to get in.

WEP has been a problem since it was created really, but recently it had
gotten worse.

2007-05-11 Thread Randy

Betty,

Right, mac, not MAC, not big Mac (the sandwich or the former steroid-enabled
slugger).

Thanks, yes, the list is in the right direction for crashes. It'd be nice
to have a list of other problems, such as slow running computer, frequent
freezing, etc., with the corresponding likely or possible causes. Regarding
some of the problems you mention, such as bad ram, bad hard drive or file
conflicts, how much of this do or can most computers indicate themselves or
does the user have to know to take some action, such as checkdisk? Or, for
instance, should one run certain things like checkdisk on a regular basis to
catch such problems?

This might not be so good for people who provide tech support, but wonder
why, say, a computer couldn't be hooked up to some online diagnostic
program sort of like how they hook a car up to computer diagnostic machines.
The program would check out the computer's status, especially anything
affecting performance, stability and safety and either make corrections or
suggest them. Or at least indicate things that should be looked into, say,
too little memory or whatever. I know there are some diagnostic programs
you can run, but not sure how comprehensive they are. If they do exist and
are not very expensive, I'd sure be interested in knowing about them!

Speaking of diagnostics, my Windows Defender apparently became inoperative,
so downloaded latest version and ran full scan, which picked up 3 possible
problems not picked up in quick scan. Wasn't sure what the 3 things were it
suggested were medium risk problems (refers you to the relevant Microsoft
website, but once there, don't see any information on these items and didn't
feel like spending an unpredictable amount of time tracking this down) so
had program quarantine them. Subsequently, some programs (1 or 2 that I'm
so far aware of) suddenly seem gone or inaccessible. Have noticed similar
issue with running other antispyware or adware - insufficient information
provided about what the questionable items found are, how important (or even
whether) is it to delete or quarantine them, whether to delete or quarantine
and what the consequences will be of deleting or quarantining them. Maybe
this is because I'm using the cheap or free programs, but if all users
should be regularly running antispyware, etc., yet it is not clear what the
results mean or what to do with them, this seems like yet another dilemma.

computer problems and the most typical causes or sources. Of course
ten is an arbitrary number; maybe it's 5 for one list and 12 for the

often am) to have some ideas of what to consider when yet another
problem crops up. Hopefully, the lists would be based on the pooled
experience of people, like many here, who have dealt with a lot of
various problems. Just an idea. Bet this list could do a good job
generating both lists. Okay, maybe would need separate lists for MAC

First, a Macintosh computer is a Mac, not a MAC. For MAC, see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAC_address.

I have a pretty good list from a long time ago--maybe 1994 or earlier,
when PC parts were much more expensive--and it's been helpful many times.
This was a reply to a befuddled user several years ago:

-
Blue screens of death [crashes, etc.] can mean the program has stopped
behaving normally, and is running random data instead of code. This can be
caused by (in order of decreasing likelyhood and increasing horror):

1) Corrupt prefs or other files, often fonts
2) Missing dll, or file conflicts
3) Bad RAM
4) Bad external device or cable or termination
5) Bad hard drive
6) Bad power supply
7) Bad motherboard

Be an acrobat. Keep your fingers crossed while reinstalling everything
from your backup disks to a reinitialized or reformatted hard drive. Have
you tried a different power cord or battery?

-

Randy - does that fit your requirements?

I will add to the list that there are plenty of important documents online
at a variety of help and mfg support sites. I bought a new Epson scanner
last week, installed the software and discovered that it 'broke' Photoshop
completely. I found parallel solutions at both Epson support and Adobe.
The scanner works fine now. Add online support sites to your solutions

Re: [CGUYS] Neighbor Runs A Crackhouse [Was: How to Install Fre

2007-05-11 Thread mike

The problem is, a LOT of the windows vulnerabilities require exactly the
same thing that was required on the mac...a single click on a website.

From the article:

While this is a significant flaw that needs to be patched, it is unlikely
that anyone who wanted access to a system would be able to set up such a
Rube Goldberg event chain to gain access to a specific users' files.

They set this Rube Goldberg event chain all the time on windows, how many
times is it because of what users do to their own systems?

Again:

Windows does not do this. (ask for permission to install/change system
files etc) Even the new and improved Vista does not ask for
authentication. It asks the user to click Allow, after previously having
asked the user to click Allow repeatedly. Guess what most users will do when
prompted to Allow some executable to do some technical sounding thing in the
Registry?

So the author describes security on both machines as having to force user
input to allow changes, but only the mac guy is smart enough to hit cancel?
Ridiculous. Vista gains a critical area in security and apparently it's not
*exactly* as on a mac so it's a complete failure?

More:

An anonymous user on Slashdot (an anonymous user..wow..hope he triple
checked his sources. He should have perhaps checked a security vendors
website or maybe even, oh...Apple?) described the exploit as involving a
JavaScript routine. Sun's Java and Netscape's JavaScript share little in
common apart from their names, but both are third party browser plugins that
are not specific to Safari. Exploiting either one and calling it a Mac
exploit is disingenuous.

So who is being disingenuous? eWeek reports that it is not a java problem
but a Quicktime bug.

http://securitywatch.eweek.com/apple/quicktime_bug_affects_all_javaenabled_browsers.html

The blog goes on to blame in several instances that 'third party software
was to blame' for any exploit.

That also highlights a fact many 'security experts' don't seem to grasp:
installing software changes your level of security. While Macs are quite
secure when kept up to date, installing software and turning on new services
can open one up to attack vectors that Apple can't control for you.

Third party software?? It was a Quicktime bug...Apple. So now Apple
installed Quicktime is third party software?

This from Newsfactor: http://www.newsfactor.com/story.xhtml?story_id=51967

As it turns out, by enticing a user to visit a Web page containing a
maliciously crafted Java applet, an attacker can exploit the QuickTime bug,
leading to arbitrary code execution, according to an Apple bulletin.
The bug is considered very serious, Apple said, and can be exploited
through any Java-enabled browser, including
Microsofthttp://www.cio-today.com/accuserve/accuserve-go.php?c=6098
[image:
Relevant
Products/Services]http://www.cio-today.com/accuserve/accuserve-go.php?c=6098's
Internet Explorer 7, Mozilla's Firefox, and Apple's own Safari. The
vulnerability affects Macs and Windows PCs.

So now we have even APPLE calling it a quicktime bug.

Looks like roughlydrafted is being a little disingenuous.

Eight years old.

Under Classic I run Canvas 5, ver. 5.0.3, copyright 1987-1996. I've
just started to use it. When I purchased it, I was told that it would
run fine on my Mac Performa 450, but it did not. I put it on the

Eleven years old.

Under Classic I run Panorama II, ver. 2.1.3, copyright 1991.
Sixteen years old.

Under Classic I run Calculator+, release 2, copyright 1985-1987
(Part of SideKick desk accessories). I like it's tape function better

Re: [CGUYS] Mac compatible printers -- recommendations?

2007-05-11 Thread Stephen Brownfield
I use a Brother laser printer. (It works with all our Macs - both those
running OS X and those running OS 9.) This is my second one. I have
been happy with both of them.

I currently use an Epson Stylus. Ink builds up and deposits excess on
edges of paper. Cleaning heads doesn't resolve it. Can't clean rollers.
Replacing cartridges doesn't minimize/prevent. This is my second
Epson and

the first had the same problem.

Suggestions?

Thanks much!

Do you really need color? Lasers are a good value compared with free
inkjets. I have 2 cheap laser printers that print OK -- HP LJ1012 ~$120
[3 yrs ago], Samsung ML2010 $20 after rebate and price match last year.
I set up Printer Sharing on 2 Macs and can print from 3 Macs and a PC. I
would have bought a networked printer but couldn't justify it since
Printer sharing works so well.

Inkjets are very expensive to run, and usually unnecessary.

Free printer+expensive ink=drug pusher marketing plan

A nice laser printer with an Ethernet port. I use a Dell 3100cn.

Re: [CGUYS] Mac compatible printers -- recommendations?

2007-05-11 Thread Chrperson
You don't mention a budget Terry. Printer recommendations would need to take
your printing requirements and budget into account.

The Xerox Phaser 8550 DP is my current printer, and I really love it. It uses
hot wax technology rather than print. Black White Color. Not cheap to
purchase, but very cheap to run.

My husband is using an HP Photosmart C3180 (all in one) that come with my
current iMac as an add
on. He's very content with it. He doesn't print much, but the printer -
scanner - meets his needs just fine.

A friend has recently purchased the Xerox Phaser 6300 laser printer. He's
pleased with that as well. He went with laser instead of hot wax because he has
frequent power failure issues where he lives, and the hot wax printers waste
ink when they are turned off / on. They are only efficient if left turned on
100% of the time.

I hope this is helpful to you.
