Re: [CGUYS] removing Norton
Millions use NAV because the manufacturers ship you their PC with it already installed. You will also find links to game sites, AOL, and lord knows what all else pre-loaded. If you are computer literate you delete all that junk. Most consumers just keep using -- and paying for -- whatever AV is installed on their computer. That's why the AV companies pay the manufacturers to preload it on the computer. That's why you have to waste hours the day it arrives removing crap you didn't order off your brand new fresh-out-of-the-Cosmoline computer before you can install the stuff you want and start using it. Sorry, I've bought four new laptops in the last year and a half. This is a PC "feature" that really gets my goat. -Mike __ Michel David Lowe > -Original Message- > From: Computer Guys Announcements and Discussion List > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Tony B > Sent: Wednesday, November 28, 2007 10:49 PM > To: COMPUTERGUYS-L@LISTSERV.AOL.COM > Subject: Re: [CGUYS] removing Norton > > Note that, like many things you read on the internet, the suggestion > that removing Norton Antivirus will help whatever problem you're > having is probably inaccurate. I certainly don't know that. In my personal experience, helping solve computer problems, 9 out of 9 times I worked with someone using the full Norton suite, including antivirus, removing that was the only long-term solution. I suspect most people who have it learn to live with the problems. In fact, I would say most home computers have problems on them (maybe not most Linux or Mac) and people learn to live with them. I find this all the time. Even people I thought were computer savvy have all kinds of problems I notice right away when I use their computers. Sort of like going to someone's house to find their TV has had a greenish tinge for the last year and they haven't done anything about it. -- John DeCarlo, My Views Are My Own * ==> QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in <== * ==> the body of an email & send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <== * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? In Wisconsin they will audit a business and if they cannot prove they paid state sales tax on items they will asses it. I did some computer work for a veterinary clinic years ago and ordered the equipment from out of state. I did this for fun and giggles and therefore had no sales tax number to be able to charge them sales tax. A few years later (after I had moved out of state) the vet clinic called me to ask if I had charged them sales tax as the state auditor was there reviewing their files. I told them no there was no way I could. I assume the auditor marked these items and charged them sales tax and a fine for not declaring the items and paying sales tax. As a business they also had to charge sales tax on any merchandise they sold. Any prescriptions/medicine or doctor fees were non taxable. All other items were. Re: [CGUYS] removing Norton
The problem is that Norton has an awful history recently. It's not so much just the antivirus but installing the whole suite that causes problems. They keep adding things to get check boxes in reviews that may not be written as well as other things in the suite. One klunker can ruin the whole package if you don't have options to install the bits and pieces separately. You can do better than Norton for free in the antivirus world. Re: [CGUYS] Color Change
Do the easy check first. Hook the monitor to another computer to determine if the problem is the monitor or the computer. Rocky Date:Tue, 27 Nov 2007 18:19:57 EST From:Buzzsaw Reader <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Color Change Starting a few days ago, the tool bars changed color from white to pink. I have been using this computer for 4 years (Windows XP) and HP Monitor (4 years). When the Windows loads instead of a blue screen, I am getting a deep purple. I have gone through all monitor settings and control panel settings. Any suggestions ? TIA, Aunt Larry Get easy, one-click access to your favorites. Re: [CGUYS] removing Norton
Why do millions of people use something crappy and smile about it? They have been educated, or trained, or raised to believe that the substandard is the norm and have lowered their expectations about performance. I'm speaking in general here, not about NAV. [rant] fill in the blanks [health insurance coverage, foreign policy, domestic policy, political fundraising, tax codes, trade policy, penal system, operating system X, application W, system utility Y, electoral college, food supply safety, toy safety, social policy, two party systems, fast food, the price of oil and petroleum products, air quality ] [/rant] I'l sometimes put a machine I'm working on with a Brand Y operating system into a diagnostic or 'safe mode' and the performance will increase by three times or more. I then ask myself: Isn't this how it should be in 'normal' startup? Yes, performance will vary from machine to machine because of CPU speed and RAM memory, but on the same machine, when it operates three or four times better, that's a substantial increase in performance. I'm sure if I loaded DOS as the OS onto the machine that it would scorch my eyeballs out from the sheer blazing speed. As to NAV, People want to be safe. It is inconceivable that you can have all three: safety, reliability , and speed simultaneously. It is unfathomable that a safety product could cause problems as well as fix them. [CGUYS] TCM Member Alert - what you can do
Thank You for this, Gayley. It is perhaps one of the most useful and helpful posts this year. (And there has been some good stuff posted this year) I need to sharpen my pitchfork and soak some torches in pitch/oil now. Re: [CGUYS] Case feet
For hardwood floors, I suggest either Teflon "glides" or felt pads that come with peel-off paper to reveal adhesive. Both are readily available at hardware store or "big box" home improvement centers like Home Depot or Lowe's. The rubber feet are OK, but they make it hard to move the machine when you need to get to the back, etc. One advantage of having casters under the unit is that it makes it much easier to vacuum under and around it, dust dust/hair is a serious enemy of any floor mounted electronics. (Do as I say, not as I do - my stuff just rests on its case on the floor and rarely gets moved or vacuumed.) One reason for the little rubber feet is to prevent scratching and damaging your nice hardwood floors or tile with the sharp edges of the metal case. Most any of the hardware stores have the small felt sticky back feet that work very well. rich * ==> QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in <== * ==> the body of an email & send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <== * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] [CGUYS} TCM Member Alert - what you can do to oppose the computer service tax
On Nov 28, 2007, at 11:15 PM, Tony B wrote: I've been in the service industry all my life and we've never charged tax on labor, only parts. I dunno about Maryland, and actually I dunno about Virginia laws sales tax laws either, but some businesses in Virginia, including the one where I work, charge sales tax on labor. By that I mean that all aspects of a sale are lumped together, both the physical portions of the product as well as the labor required to assemble the product. For instance, if a consumer wants to buy a mirror and have it installed into a frame, they may well be required by the business to pay tax not only on the frame and mirror, but on the assembly charges as well even if the assembly {labor) charges are separately listed on the invoice. I think it is actually not legal to do this, but it is done fairly routinely anyway. When I have raised questions to retailers about this, they have told me that if any hardware is consumed to perform the labor portions of a job, such as screws or bolts, then they are allowed to charge sales tax. I remain skeptical. At the time I resisted, but since you asked again, I'll ask: "Why do you NEED feet on your case anyway?". I can't remember the last time I put them on a system I've built. Although, it's been a while since a case I've bought included unattached ones too. I have no idea if this thing sitting next to me has feet on it or not, and I'm not going to look because I really don't care.
