The Wii and Xbox are less competitors and more companions. The reason the
Wii numbers are so high? Yes it's cool, and different and all that, but
it's also a LOT of users second game machine. It was never meant to compete
with the xbox or ps 3.

It is indeed, I've seen it.

You can even use it as a receiver/DVR for over-the-air HDTV (stick a digital
TV tuner in a PC, then stream the signal over the home network to the Xbox,
where you use Media Extender to control playing and recording). Or watch HD
movies and network TV directly off the Internet via Xbox Live Video. It's

Well, according to Tom, it's not. It's something else, although he's rather
vague about exactly what that might be ("better design"). I think Wii is
cuter or something.

Maybe it's the lack of iPod support. Oh wait, that's Wii. Xbox supports iPod
directly, you just plug it in. Hmm. I'm back to cuteness.

We've been using Audacity for several months now to capture audio from a
reel-to-reel, with good results. Today, all we seem to get is a low-level
recording with lots of hiss. Listening to the audio through headphones
attached to the reel-to-reel sounds fine. I've tried several different setting
on both the r-t-r output & Audacity preferences, but no luck. I've gone into
the PC Control Panel to make sure all the input levels were checked (we're
using the microphone jack on the back of the PC). The r-t-r weighs about 40
lb., so before I try using it on another computer, any thoughts? tia.

This is often such a mess to configure that I usually just spend the $30
for a hardware print server or connect through a router or WiFi AP that
has a printer port.

Which print server do you have or recommend for $30?

Comparing the Xbox with the WII is not a fair comparison.

They serve different purposes and really are aimed at two different groups.

The X-Box is a gamers machine with a HD and all sorts of graphic capabilities.

The WII is a family machine that serves many roles and many
purposes. My in laws (Both in their 70's) bought one and use it for
WII Fit and some skill games.

We bought one for the same purpose. My son bought a Playstation
3. My son-in-law has an Xbox

WII seems to be outselling any of the gamer type machines right now,
but I think that is because your non typical buyer is standing in
line to buy it. (read over 50 years old)

I can't remember where I saw it; it was a while ago. However, it was a poll
(a real one, not a web site poll) rather than customer-submitted feedback,
so I would tend to trust it more.

In any event, there's no question on the specs and not much of one about the
reviews.

'24' is an exception to this, at least in some cases (I don't watch it
much). If you look at their big screen surveillance-type displays you'll see
a Vista task bar at the bottom. Not sure if that counts as a paid product
placement, though. It's probably too subtle for MS to have paid for it.

I was amused once to spot the icon of a program that I wrote a lot of. The
company that owns the product joked that they were going to add an "As Seen
on '24'" graphic to the product web site.

I was wondering how much more "HEY! LOOK OVER THERE!" we would get out of the
Mac camp and lo, I'm not disappointed one bit.

The commercial had one, simple premise: if you have a budget of $1,000 and 17"
laptop is your target device, you are out of luck with Apple. (That reminds me
of the old adage, "If you have to ask the price...").

That's it. Nothing special and gosh, why yes!, they did pick this
configuration on purpose to hit Apple, hard, where it lives, in the
snobosphere. I think most people could have accepted this and moved on with
their lives, but no, we instead get a 4-day Rave of dancing around the facts.

You're surprised that the sponsor of an ad would tell you who he is and
what his product is? I interpret the meaning of "touting" as telling you
what is so great about it, not just flashing a product name.

I repeat, for the nth time, MS is not directly selling Windows here.
They are indirectly, by convincing you to buy a PC laptop. Certainly,
you are aware that MS earns almost all of its revenue from Windows on
preinstalled PCs, not from folks who say, "Gee, I like the looks of that
there Vista; I think I will go out and by me a copy to upgrade my XP"
(THOSE are your MS Fanboys)

And, as I said before, this ad is targeted at people who don't give a
damn about what OS comes with the machine or are complacent about
getting yet another Windows PC. It's Apple's job to convince them
otherwise. And their "I'm a PC" are very effective.

Yes even Apple does this too.

MS was touting that it is a bargain in this time of tight
monies. It's logo being plastered all over the ad is what they aimed
at. When you think saving money think MS.

Actually it was a good marketing approach in this time of tight monies.

Why are you insisting that a single ad has to cover all possible reasons
to do something? If a car commercial (I know how you love car analogies)
talks about gas mileage, does that imply that the only reason to buy the
car is that it gets good mileage? Obviously it does not. It's just the
subject of that particular ad.

This particular ad is for people who are on a budget; the next one could
be entirely different. Note that the campaign title is "Laptop Hunters"
(plural), not "Laptop Hunter". Presumably there will be more than one;
and, as I already mentioned (and you seem to have ignored), there are
other MS ads currently running that have nothing to do with budgets.

Your assertion makes no sense at all.

It certainly fortifies and rallies the WfBs to spout nonsense!

Do you hear that sound? It's the sound of a million rending souls in
the snobosphere.

Please, Microsoft, make many, many more of these commercials. It's like
a dog whistle for pretension.

I already answered this. They currently have several ads with little kids
showing how easy and quick it is to do stuff like making panoramas and
enhancing/mailing pictures. They just finished the "I'm a PC" series.

You may or may not like these, and they may or may not be very good ads, but
they disprove your assertion.

What other ads does MS have out touting their OS? Do they tout anything
else? Advertisements build brand; MS seems to be going for the Wal-Mart
image in this one.

(plural), not "Laptop Hunter". Presumably there will be more than one;
and, as I already mentioned (and you seem to have ignored), there are
other MS ads currently running that have nothing to do with budgets.

Your assertion makes no sense at all.

You may have a point. He does smell of elderberries and has a tendency to
taunt.

Actually, Tom being French explains almost everything.

That is not logical. The ad says if you are on a budget. So if I am not
on a budget, it says nothing to me.  This is not mathematical logical;
it is human nature. Advertising pays attention to human nature.

Yes, that is true. What I am seeing, that is not in the ad, is the
statement "_Only_ if you are on a tight budget would you want to buy
hardware with an MS operating system".

What I do see is "_If_ you are on a tight budget, etc"

Didn't you take logic in some math course where you learned the
differences between A if B, A only if B, A if and only if B?

It occurred to me last night that there's another Python bit that's even
more on point than the argument sketch.

I'm thinking of Holy Grail, where the questers ask the French, "Who will
join us in our quest for the Holy Grail?" John Cleese, in his ridiculous
French accent, leans over the castle wall and responds that they already
have one, then bends down to his confreres and says, "I told them we already
had one!" and they all start laughing.

I have a vision of Tom leaning over to whomever it is that he leans over to
and saying, "I told them Lauren should've gotten an iMac to take to class!",
followed by everyone clutching their sides and dissolving in gales of
hilarity.
