Here's the story. Doesn't say what exactly he was upset about:

It's a sad story, but I had to laugh a little at this:

Now there's an expression of shock if I ever heard one.

Interesting story on how the industry wants to kill flat rate billing
 for the Internet.

I couldn't have said it better:

However well intentioned, regulation limiting pricing models is never going
to get past incumbent lobbyists and a well-lobbied Congress. If government
is going to get involved, they're better served by taking actions that
foster competition. As we've seen with Cablevision and Verizon's reluctance
to impose caps or meters, and Time Warner's reluctance to trial meters in
FiOS markets, competition is kind of like DEET for dumb, self-serving
telecom ideas. The threat of customer defection will keep carriers on their
best behavior.

I like how there was a Comcast ad on the same page as the op-ed.

Re: [CGUYS] Embedding Metadata in PDF (Was: Databases: Open Office Base?)

2009-06-22 Thread Judy Cosler
not necessarily. I was editor of a newsletter (generally 12-16 pp) for a dog
club (200 members) a few years back. To get the file to the printers, I had
to convert the .pub file to .pdf (ie, save it as .pdf). I found a very wide
variety of differences between the many free .pdf print programs. Some
wouldn't render unusual fonts properly. Some messed up photos. And the
differences in file size were huge! Also, I got a much smaller size if i
chose 'bw' as the print option, even though the entire file *was *in BW
-- never did figure that one out!!

Preview does not attempt to create optimized PDFs. It saves the file as
quickly as possible. There is no option to perform extra processing to make
it smaller. For that you need to pay for Acrobat.

It's a deal killer.   It's an inappropriate use of a form of govt id which was
intended for the SS admin, not the convenience of Sprint.  A private biz cannot
require you to divulge your ssn.
It's the same thing when I was trying to buy a car and test driving.  They want
to keep my driver's license.  They want to do this so they can run a credit
check to see if I can afford the car I'm testing.  All they need to know is
that I have a valid dl, and that can be confirmed by visual inspection.
When I test drove a car at another agency, they took no information from me,
only my name.  When I drove away without purchasing, they took my tag down and
a few days later I received a nice ty note for considering biz with them.  It's
apparently legal, but at least I'm not volunteering info they don't really need.

Also, why would showing your license be any different then letting them keep

It is required to open a bank account as they have to check with a
clearing house to see if you are safe.

To get a job they must check your immigration status (I-9) and
possibly if you are foreign sounding run your SS number to see if you
are eligible for employment.

There are SS #s that state not eligible for employment.

My wife is an Alien (Canadian) and has a SS card. She is eligible
for employment.

She must show her alien card when she is hired and fills out an I-9 form.

The SS# has taken on a very big significance in the life of a person
who lives and works in the USA.

By the way in Canada it is called the SIN number. (Social Insurance Number)

My power company demanded my SSN to pay my bill!

 According to Slashdot's article here

telling Sprint your Social Security number (ostensibly so they can run a
 credit check).

Anybody willing to do that for a mobile phone or is that a deal killer?

 Thank you,

Also, why would showing your license be any different then letting them

If there is nothing on the Hard Drive you need to
keep a simple reformat and reinstall would do well.

Out of curiosity, how long ago was this? A lot of organizations that at one

used to be my SSN, but they changed it maybe
four or five years ago for privacy reasons.

[CGUYS] Good idea - manuals online

2009-06-22 Thread Tony B
The office called today and asked a technical question about one of
their video cameras. Of course, my first response was to shout at the
boss RTFM! But, she _does_ pay me for this type of thing, so I googled
the manual. I found it on Retrevo, apparently a new service. I can see
a real need for this type of service.

Hello,
