Doesn't say what exactly he was upset about: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/06/18/AR2009061802995.html It's a sad story, but I had to laugh a little at this: Neighbors were shocked to hear how Cornelius died. Re: [CGUYS] Killing flat rate?
http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/The-Metered-Billing-Fight-Is-About- To-Get-Ugly-103043 Interesting story on how the industry wants to kill flat rate billing for the Internet. I couldn't have said it better: However well intentioned, regulation limiting pricing models is never going to get past incumbent lobbyists and a well-lobbied Congress. If government is going to get involved, they're better served by taking actions that foster competition. As we've seen with Cablevision and Verizon's reluctance to impose caps or meters, and Time Warner's reluctance to trial meters in FiOS markets, competition is kind of like DEET for dumb, self-serving telecom ideas. The threat of customer defection will keep carriers on their best behavior. Yes, it is possible. During the installation process, it will say something like Install has detected a previous installation of Windows. Would you like to repair this installation? Re: [CGUYS] Embedding Metadata in PDF (Was: Databases: Open Office Base?)
not necessarily. I was editor of a newsletter (generally 12-16 pp) for a dog club (200 members) a few years back. To get the file to the printers, I had to convert the .pub file to .pdf (ie, save it as .pdf). I found a very wide variety of differences between the many free .pdf print programs. Some wouldn't render unusual fonts properly. Some messed up photos. And the differences in file size were huge! Also, I got a much smaller size if i chose 'bw' as the print option, even though the entire file *was *in BW -- never did figure that one out!! Re: [CGUYS] Sprint Requires SSN to Open Acct, buy Pre
It's a deal killer. It's an inappropriate use of a form of govt id which was intended for the SS admin, not the convenience of Sprint. A private biz cannot require you to divulge your ssn. It's the same thing when I was trying to buy a car and test driving. They want to keep my driver's license. They want to do this so they can run a credit check to see if I can afford the car I'm testing. All they need to know is that I have a valid dl, and that can be confirmed by visual inspection. When I test drove a car at another agency, they took no information from me, only my name. When I drove away without purchasing, they took my tag down and a few days later I received a nice ty note for considering biz with them. It's apparently legal, but at least I'm not volunteering info they don't really need. --- On Mon, 6/22/09, Snyder, Mark - IdM (IS) mark.sny...@ngc.com wrote: From: Snyder, Mark - IdM (IS) mark.sny...@ngc.com Subject: [CGUYS] Sprint Requires SSN to Open Acct, buy Pre To: COMPUTERGUYS-L@LISTSERV.AOL.COM Date: Monday, June 22, 2009, 11:14 AM According to Slashdot's article here http://yro.slashdot.org/story/09/06/21/2359255/SSN-Required-To-Buy-Palm -Pre you cannot open a Sprint account and buy a Palm Pre without telling Sprint your Social Security number (ostensibly so they can run a credit check). It is required to open a bank account as they have to check with a clearing house to see if you are safe. To get a job they must check your immigration status (I-9) and possibly if you are foreign sounding run your SS number to see if you are eligible for employment. There are SS #s that state not eligible for employment. My wife is an Alien (Canadian) and has a SS card. She is eligible for employment. She must show her alien card when she is hired and fills out an I-9 form. The SS# has taken on a very big significance in the life of a person who lives and works in the USA. By the way in Canada it is called the SIN number. (Social Insurance Number) Stewart At 12:25 PM 6/22/2009, you wrote: They can't require it, but they can sure turn you down if you refuse. A reformat reinstall will require all programs to be reinstalled. Stewart At 05:35 PM 6/22/2009, you wrote: How about the Programs? Also I used to know who I reformat but it has been sometime ago. Any quick advice? Also Windows XP is regitered to a computer named Home. I changed the name to New. Prblems. Re: [CGUYS] Sprint Requires SSN to Open Acct, buy Pre
When I started college they issued us an ID number which was sort of alphabetical derived. About halfway through they changed the ID number to our SSN Out of curiosity, how long ago was this? A lot of organizations that at one time used SSNs for IDs have stopped doing so. My Blue Cross ID, for example, used to be my SSN, but they changed it maybe four or five years ago for privacy reasons. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

[CGUYS] Good idea - manuals online
The office called today and asked a technical question about one of their video cameras. Of course, my first response was to shout at the boss RTFM! But, she _does_ pay me for this type of thing, so I googled the manual. I found it on Retrevo, apparently a new service. I can see a real need for this type of service. Hello, Congratulations on becoming a Retrevo member. Our free service offers more than 100,000 manuals. Um, you are legally required to carry a dl while driving. Also, why would showing your license be any different then letting them keep the license while you test the car? * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
