Re: [CGUYS] Iitunes on External HDD -- Not showing in Archive

2011-03-06 Thread Gail Miller
As far as moving your library so you can use it on both machines, there's
a fairly detailed explanation here:
http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to-a-new-hard-drive/

Hi again --
I'm purging my email folder and wanted to be sure I can access thin link in
the online archive of Computer guys -- but alas, this post is not showing
up. What am I doing wrong? Is it my settings or what? Thanks so much ...

[CGUYS] Question re External HDD

2011-03-05 Thread Gail Miller
Hi...I have a large external HDD connected to my desktop computer by a USB
cable. I would like to use some of the data on the HDD on my Laptop. Can it
be as simple as moving the USB cable from one machine to the other or am I
missing something major here?

If it works that easily, I can envision storing my photos and music on the
HDD for use on both of my computers.

As always, thanks in advance!

In my own experience, it is that simple. All my machines are Windowz
based, If you are moving between Mac and Win machines, all bets are off.

[CGUYS] Iitunes on External HDD

2011-03-05 Thread Gail Miller

If you're using iTunes, you can move the library file to the external
drive, and use it on both machines. Topic for another thread.

Thanks!

I DO use ITunes and I do store my music files on the External drive. So ...
are you saying that I could use EITHER machine to sync my IPod? That would
be awesome indeed!. I ran out of space on my primary HDD so moved the ITunes
library to the external drive.

Could you explain a little more? My IPod is the Nano with the radio. It's
just about a year old -- the 4th Generation, I think.

Thanks so much!!

[CGUYS] Password Keeper == Login King -- thoughts?

Hi ... I'm looking for something that will help me remember the
ever-increasing number of passwords. I found this site, recommended by PC
Magazine, but I seem to recall a discussion here long ago saying that such
programs are not secure. What's the scoop? Handy and safe or forget it?

Suddenly -- this morning -- My Outlook Express destroys each email that it
optns. It will show up in the search function (in a box) but it cannot
open the file from there. We recently did a test and once opened it
disappeared. It shows in the result box of the search function as in the
'INBOX but it is clearly not there.

WHAT to do? A couple of these are important!!

Re: [CGUYS] STRANGE VIRUS? AGAIN ... and again

2009-12-27 Thread Gail Miller

HI again ...

My son is STILL trying to reformat his HDD and delete the partitions. Can
you explain how to do that? How to delete the partitions that is. He's
running Windows 7. Would the Ultimate Boot Disk be a good thing or even more
confusing for him now? As usual... Many thanks in advance!

That is the one I was looking for thank you Tom. (I could not remember
the name of it.)

The ultimate Boot disk is FREE for download.

It includes all the wonderful utilities I was talking about.

Download it and use it.

Yes it would. Scroll back on this thread to where I posted about the

Re: [CGUYS] STRANGE VIRUS? AGAIN

2009-12-23 Thread Gail Miller
Hi ... Well I had to get my son to come over here and type out what actually
happens with this virus because he didn't want to send it to me in an
email. So, here's what he told me.

Hope you can make out what it is that's going on --- and better yet -- what
he might do to fix it.

Worst case -- do you think Dell will take it back so we can start over or is
it likely beyond that point now?

Strange Virus Explained:
What this Virus does

It apparently sets itself up in both windows\system32 and also in
windows\sonfig

Irt uses worpad (I suspect because wordpad can be saved as .XML, and the
controlers use Windows Shell and RPC, remote procedure call, as well as
API, wich I'm not sure what that is, but along with a lot of other things,
it changes the registry, sets up user accounts, with high level authority,
it creates virtual UPC buses, virtual wireless adapters, virtual network
adapters, virtual monitors, even virtual processorsand takes control of
your computer, making even the administrator have about as much authority on
his own computer as a low level user would have, makes tons of network
connections using Media Player, and lots of other things, and downloads tons
more things onto your computer, and uploads tons of things to places unknown
too.

It sees when you're trying to disable it for intstance using mmc, an
advanced feature in Windows Fire Wall, which has snap ins to create rules
for incoming and outgoing connections, and it changes whatever rules you
make without changing what the settings are on the console, and then makes
the controls disappear, or not clickable meaning it has removed your level
of access even when you sign on as an administrator (which being the sole
user and owner of this computer I'm already an administrator, but due to the
way Windows 7 makes you less than an admnistrator unitl you need to use the
privilege, is the way it works)

It uses BCD alot, I don't know if that's a program it downloaded or if
that's Microsoft's software, but it stands I think for boot control device,
and it alters the boot manager so that evereytime it boots, it gets loaded
first, and also apparently alters the system BIOS to make it so that unless
onboard BIOS legacy is enabled, it can't find the operating system and it
won't boot..which also means that even now that the new Windows installation
and a supposedly clean disk I probably STILL have it. I wiped the entire
hard drive using a DOS program called Kill Disk..which makes one pass, and
creates zeros on every byte on the partition you select, I did that to every
partition

It had first partition 100Mb, with no label or volume, then one 149Gb, with
a W something 4 character string, then a dash - then 4 more characters (all
numeric if I remember correctly. Then it had another partition, not labeled,
it was something like
200,000 sectors big, but had no dataI'm thinking this is a virtual
partition, and it was super hard to get rid of using DOS, DiskPartin
fact due to my inexperience using that utility, I didn't remove it until I
let Windows delete a partition upon set up.

I think I'm wrong about some of the things but that's the best of my
recollection right now. I had used a DOS util. called Isasld.and got a
list of users and permissions assigned for everyone on the computer. But, I
wasn't able to print it because the driver for the printer which I
downloaded was intercepted by the virus and changed into something else,
so when the window popped up to change my permissions to administrator,
thinking I was downloading and installing a driver from DELL.it was
something from HELL instead!

Thanks so much everyone!!

Gail Miller

Not sure if Gail got run off or got busy.

But, there are still a few who had questions that may have been lost in
the

maze of the thread that started this..so

What exactly is the computer doing that you think it has a virus? I've
seen

bad hardware behave strangely, this may be the issue this time also.

[CGUYS] STRANGE VIRUS?

2009-12-21 Thread Gail Miller

My son has a new Dell Mini10 that seems to have a fatal virus.

He lives in a house with others and they have an unsecured network
connectoion. About 10 days ago he thinks he got a virus and the only way he
could find to get rid of it was sto reformat the hared drive. He did that.
Reinstalled the Windows 7 OS and thought he was fine.

Not so. The virus (if that's what it is came back. So he repeated the
steps. Downloaded and purchased McAfee virus Protection and thought he was
fine. Again, the virus came back, this time destroying McAfee.

He has since reformatted the drive several times and each time the virus
returns.

Do you think there really IS a virus in the network or is this somestranger
than faction paronoia?

Is there any way to determine whether this IS or is NOT a virus? Is there
any hope that Dell will take the machine back and fix it and send a new one
since it's under warranty?

Any advice will be appreciated. I bought the machine for ng son as an early
Christmas prresent and so far and so far it's been a$300 white elephant that
has caused nothing but trouble.

Thanks in advance for nay help you can provide!!

Warm regards and thanks in advance,
Gail Miller

Re: [CGUYS] STRANGE VIRUS?

2009-12-21 Thread Gail Miller

Thanks.

1) How would he get rid of a boot sector virus?

1) How would he turn off the wifi since it's built into the computer?

3) Have you ever heard of a BCD virus? I don't know where he got the name
but asked me to ask about it.

This virus seems to take over his machine, create virtual servers, and I
don't know what all else. I'm beginning to rue the day I bought the
computer!!

Thanks in advance -- again!
Gail

Quoting Gail Miller gail.mil...@comcast.net:

My son has a new Dell Mini10 that seems to have a fatal virus.

Other than he thinks he has a virus, and he reinstalled Windows, you
haven't given much to go on.

If he *does* have a virus that keeps reappearing, it might be a boot
sector virus that a simple format might not get rid of (someone correct
me if I'm wrong).

If someone on his insecure network has a virus, and he connects to it
before he's got protection installed, well, then it's (probably) already
too late. Have him turn off his WiFi before going through the procedure
next time.

[CGUYS] Reformatted HDD --big problems still!.

2009-12-06 Thread Gail Miller
Hi I rinally (for the first time) reformatted my HDD on my Dell Dimension
E510.

The procedure went surprisingly well, and I THOUGHT I had gathered all the
software, drivers, etc., taht I needed. However, somebody said the drivers
would be on the ereformat drive so I wasn't very careful about that I fear!

So I can't find the proper sound card driver -- well, I apparently had it
because the sound worked for a couple days but then I downloaded Service
Pack 2 and now I have a couple issues: There is no sound. I've double
checked to be sure the speakers are plugged in and I've looked at the Device
Panel to see that my IDE High Definition CODEC has a yellow question mark
and when I check it, I'm told that the device cannot start (Code 10). The
troubleshooter wants me to uninstall it let the system reinstall it it seems
to think all will be well. So I did that and it sstill doesn't work. Upon
the found new hardware I'm asked for a disk and then we go back to grund
zero.

I have to suspect that this came about with the installation of Service Pack
2. And I have two other issues (that i had on my machine before the
reformat) which are two error messages at atartup, having to do with my
DLINK router that I use to access the Internet through my Comcast Modem. The
messages are:
AIRGCFG.EXE NOT FOUND (WLANAPI.DLL). The other one is WZCSLDR2.EXE -- driver
not found in wlanapi.dll. Those two issues (and a couple more) occurred
before the reformat after I onstalled Service Pack 2 on the machine a few
months ago. No users except myself are in my little network- on the
desktop and the laptop.

So long as it's not hurting anything these latter two annoyances can stay
but I really need to see what I can do to restore sound to my system.

One of the reasona I wanted to reformat the HDDD was so I could get my Media
Center up and running again and then watch TV through my Hauppauge USB Box.
When iI first got this machine 3 years ago it worked beautifully but ,
sometime around the time I installed Service Pack 2, it stopped working, Of
course until I can get sound it seems silly to test to see if I can get the
TV to work NOW THAT i HAVE REFORMATTED THE DRIVE SO so I haven't done that
yet.

Any help/advaice/ etc you can provide will be MUCH appreciated. I'm eager to
get this finished so I can get on with Christmas!

Warmest regards,
Gail Miller
