Re: [CGUYS] Adobe update messed up printing PDF files

2011-03-31 Thread Stewart Marshall

Wayne here is a suggestion try another PDF reader.

Nuance and Foxit both have a decent PDF reader and I have had to use
them on occasion when Adobes would not open a PDF file I received.

I got an invoice from a vendor for a conference and I downloaded it
repeatedly and Adobe would not open it.

Tried it in Foxit and it came out fine? DOnt know why but this
happens every now and then.

I have a feeling it is the software they use to encode the PDF page.

But try either one of those and see if it is the same.

Squished? I couldn't tell what was going on so I looked

it's wrong. The original text was italicized, the printed
is bolded. I don't know much of anything else about fonts,
 Helvetica from Times, etc.

I updated her Acrobat this past weekend, I have to figure
that this is related. Does anyone have a clue on how to
figure out what got whacked and how to unwhack it?

 All help is gratefully appreciated.

Responding to my own message...
It also seems that the kerning is messed up, the text height
may as well but that could be an optical illusion going from
italics to bold, etc.

Yes but I would not recommend it.

Nero does have the capabilities to do both, if you have a full

left when her husband took a call in another locality last Summer.

She was not about to send her money and thought it was the real
person who she has tangled with before because of financial problems.

The one sent to this list was unusual as it sent it to an email list,
not an individual.

If I understand it correctly, this is done by someone or something
that hacks yahoo accounts and then uses their address books within
Yahoo to send out these missives.

I got two last year. One from a member of this or another similar
list and then one from a church list I manage. These were
individuals who I have known and have communicated with.

The first one I was sorry for their problem but was not about to send
money. The second one i had just seen an email from on the list a
day or two before and they had not mentioned traveling. (and this
person does a bit of it.) So I was suspicious right off. He then
wrote me as manager of the list that his Yahoo account had problems.

When my friend forwarded this one to me, I knew right off that it was a scam.

Re: [CGUYS] think i've been taken: replacement laptop keys

2011-02-13 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall
I have no idea who you ordered from but if it was Ebay check and see
if it was HK or China. If I want it fast, I find a domestic seller,
and pay a little extra. Otherwise I bide my time, as shipping from
there can take a month.

Yes individual keys can be replaced. You need to be careful as there
are usually little barbs or hooks on them that break easily. But you
can replace individual keys and it is easier than opening up and
replacing keyboards.

So first check and see where you bought them from and see if it is
overseas. Second contact the seller and ask what is going on.

I ordered a book before Christmas did not arrive within 4
weeks.Contacted seller, he issued refund. Book promptly showed
up on my door step. (Shipped media mail notoriously slow.)

So it looks like Google has heard the calls and is trying to get all

Truthfully, Sun was slow including new code or even slightly re-written
code from outside Sun and after Oracle absorbed Sun, it apparently got
worse. Fixes for flaws often languished even after being tested for
months (in one case over a year), and the release schedule frankly
wasn't all that great either.

LibreOffice works normally, but so does OpenOffice and OpenOffice can
include code from LibreOffice if the coders so desire. I think of

Re: [CGUYS] Apple's iPad: Death knell for traditional Ma cintos h computers?

2010-06-30 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall

I don't think it is that easy to make that judgement.

Just 10 years ago the 17 CRT monitor was considered a luxury.

In those days all coders and programmers sufficed on 15 monitors that
had flicker problems and such.

The 15 laptop (really 15.4) is actually a little larger than the
monitors we used in those days.

Really I started off on a 14 monochrome display.

Just how large a monitor do we need? Just how many monitors do we need?

Does the corporation need to pay for a multiple monitor setup where
one would suffice, just because the employee wants the latest and greatest?

There has to be a balancing act here that looks at the job and needs
of the job, besides what the employee wishes for.

I just got a 22 flat panel for my office to replace my 17 CRT. I
was happy to get it, as it cost just a shade more than the 19 CRT I
bought a few years ago that was a refurb.

we're getting into the issue of workers versus corporations, rather
than consumer choice (of iPads and smartphones versus computers).

And iPhones may be cool, but they're still much too expensive for a
lot of people. The mere fact that an iPhone does a lot of stuff does
not give me (or anybody else) the money to buy one, or the
wherewithal to pay the telephone bill.  This is serious money, folks;
and for something that can't do a lot of everyday functions, like
writing a book report or typing a letter. It's really about how many
people can afford a luxury item, like a smartphone or an iPad. For a
lot of us, the money just isn't there; and if it were, we would
probably spend it on a more useful device, like a computer of some
kind. Or even on food and rent.

Re: [CGUYS] New Mac Mini

2010-06-17 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall
I am a subscriber to Netflix and view Netflix movies on my computer
and my WII on the wide screen TV (Streamed)

Few drawbacks yet.

New releases usually are not on the view menu. Because of Studio
agreements and what not they usually take some time before you can
watch them this way. (and usually do not till they are a few years old.)

Closed Captions. Most movies (they are working to improve this) do
not have closed captions available. My wife hates it because I have
to turn the TV up to hear the movie.

Limited menu. As I stated before not all movies are available in
this manner, and the list is constantly changing. (Some studios
actually pull movies from the list.)

Not too long ago the studios started penalizing Netflix (and Redbox)
by not allowing them the new releases on the same day as the stores
got them for sale. They did this because of money once again. In
their minds they sell more movies in the month following a new
release than they do after this date and if they can prevent
consumers from being able to rent these movies in that time frame
they feel they can make up their investment. So Netflix and Redbox
have come to agreements with the studios (the honest truth is the
studios blackmailed and arm twisted them into it.) and all is OK
right now (you simply wait a month till you can rent it.) It is
interesting that the only video rental company who did not have this
happen, already had a kickback agreement with the studio, Blockbuster
(which is going down the tubes)

Studios will have to be the first ones to change this problem.

I agree being able to stream the entertainment is neat. But until
you can truly stream the movies you want instead of what Hollywood
will allow you too, BR and DVD will still be the preferred method of
distribution.

put a large share of their resources in that area to ensure good
above average Internet connectivity.

If you live on the west coast of CA between SF and SD you again have

It is the area in between that has the problems. It is spotty to say

By the end of the year we should have some good competition in the

They seem to have many models and many modes of entry into the market.

I have already used this approach once when someone got infected
with this XP antivirus scam.

They are getting worse and will literally paralyze the system from

continued to get worse.

I have had similar problems with Notron and BitDefender. I suspect
that all antiviral software has to make itself hard to remove. If they
didn't the next virus that came along could easily uninstall it. The
best defense is to not run defective OSs.

More and more I like the idea of periodically booting into Linux from
a CD and then running a virus scanner from there. BitDefender has such
a disk and it is free. It creates a RAM disk and downloads the latest
definitions. Then it runs against the inactive Windows drive. That
means it can bypass rootkits and other defenses that a virus could
have inserted into Windows.

Re: [CGUYS] illegal search warrant?

2010-04-30 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall

Actually I was half right.

Note the fine print of the map:

Based on death data from 2000 through 2006, this US map of the
smoothed, county-level, age-adjusted suicide rates indicate that
suicide rates are highest in the western and northwestern regions of
the United States. There is also a notable pattern of high suicide
rates among counties in the central areas of the midwest and southern
regions and in central Florida.

They may be lower in density but they are not the norm. The areas I
was most familiar with (upper midwest) showed a lower suicide rate.

Also statistics can be misleading.

1 suicide in an area of 300 is 1/300 of the population but it is
still one. 10 suicides in a area of 10,000 is 1/1,000. Not as large
a statistical number but it is in reality over 3 times as many suicides.

I have dealt with the aftermath of suicide and it is never a fun
topic nor easy to explain. Many things go into it.

Stewart

At 10:09 PM 4/30/2010, you wrote:

Actually, the holiday suicide idea is a media-perpetuated falsehood:
http://www.snopes.com/holidays/christmas/suicide.asp

And I posted about this yesterday, but somehow the post didn't make
it to the list: Stewart was wrong about suicide increasing
with population density. It's exactly the opposite. Massachusetts,
New York, New Jersey and DC are among the most densely
populated states and have some of the lowest suicide rates,
while Alaska, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana have some of the
higher rates and are among the least densely populated.

If you want to see it visually by county, look at the two maps here
of the suicide rate and population density:

http://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/suicide/statistics/suicide_map.html
http://www.mapofusa.net/us-population-density-map.htm

You'll see a very good correspondence between low population
density and high suicide rates or between high population density and
low suicide rates. And it's not just the US, it seems to be a
worldwide phenomenon:
http://www.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=10398page=36
In China, the contrast between the rural and urban suicide
rates is particularly extreme.

Re: [CGUYS] illegal search warrant?

2010-04-28 Thread Stewart Marshall
Lousy analogy Tom. You act as if you have not read any of what has
been written about this item.

The fact is the item was left by absent minded techie at bar.

Item was turned into bar tender who has no idea whose it is.(I
wonder how many folks had been there that night and had phones?)

Good faith attempts were made to return said item to Apple, but
because of Apples own compartmentalization no one knew what they were
talking about.

I cant remember how the Gizmodo guy got it at that point but he did,
he then did a review and took it apart analyzed etc. etc.

When he had it back together and working he sent it back.

It is only after the fact that they have raided the guys house and
not charged him with anything. I wonder what the search warrant said?

You have to lay part of the blame here at Apple for being careless
with their tech stuff, and being a little paranoid. This is not the
first time someone has lost a prototype and someone else got it to

Good faith attempts were made to return said item to Apple, but because of

Re: [CGUYS] Palm Does About as Well as It Could

2010-04-28 Thread Rev. Stewart Marshall

So far I am very happy with my Palm Pre.

Nicely done, nice hardware and easy to use.

Could use a few more apps, it would be nice to have a decent IM program.

I have not paid for one app yet, an have a decent group of them that
are useful.

The free hotspot app and usage (Verizon dropped the fee for using
it.) makes this very handy.

I even have an app that will help me keep track of gasoline usage and
lets me know very quickly mileage etc.

Granted it does not have as many apps as the Iphone (no kidding) but

Looks like it blew away a good chunk of the Registry. The computer had
no Task Bar or Start button. Desktop icons could not be moved. The
network connection and WiFi were gone. Many Control Panels displayed
just an empty window. The McAfee application would not launch. System
Restore says System Restore is unable to protect your computer and
then exits.

Worse of all, it blew away the Administrator account. I had the client
running in a limited-rights account, which she was able to log into,
but almost everything I might want to use to fix things can't be run
from the limited-rights account. When I try to log into the

to the login screen.

Arrgh!

It is not a perfect world, in any sense of the way.

The FCC is trying to make decisions in the public interest using
vague and dual meaning laws meant to not accomplish much but get the

Sometimes I would prefer to let a commissioner make a decision in my

Consider that the UK pound is the equivalent

Why? They have regulation and competition. We

It mainly is based on expected usage.

They expect you to use it more so you pay more for it.

Now if I were a business that required a high speed connection tog et

Recently the cable company said they could offer a 16mps connection.
Now I would pay a high price for that, but instead they increased my
5 mps to an 8 mps for the same price.

my biggest frustration is the servers used by many sites from which I

Yeah. If Eric's FiOS is capable of delivering 100Mbs (or whatever

wire isn't able to support it, then they don't *really* have 110Mbs

capable of the bandwidth, or it isn't.

Seems to me like it's more trouble and expense trying to meter out the

In municipalities we are well served by high speed Net access.

It is when you get on the fringes of these municipalities and into
the suburban areas that there is a stark difference.

There are a number of smaller towns in this area, 10K population or
so that have varying degrees of service. Most of them have VOIP available.

Our municipality does not have any special services, except the cable
company is offering speeds of 15mps. (I have achieved this
occasionally on my own connection)

Much of the problem has to do with the cable systems. Also the age
of our copper system (phone lines) is starting to cause problems.

I have checked out DSL high speed and the best they can offer is 4mps
due to limitations of the infrastructure.

Again it is hit and miss. (A lot like ATT's 3g coverage)

Re: [CGUYS] play video from laptop to TV

2010-04-02 Thread Stewart Marshall

There are two ways I do it.

I have an extended VGA cable that I plug into my laptop, and the plug
into the TV. Depends on what you have but at least one male end and
possibly one female end require. That will do the video. If you want
sound, a stereo miniplug to dual RCA Phono plugs which you will then
need to plug into the TV.

Alternative which will give you three RCA plugs to plug into a
DVD/VCD (red/white/yellow Combo) is to get a S-video to RCA adapter
(I have one for my Dell, the computer S-Video and TV S-Video are not
the same) and the use a three wire RCA Plug to RCA Plug which will
give you video and sound together.

I have used both of the above ways to plug my laptop into a TV both
conventional SDTV (Tube) and HDTV (Flat Panel LCD)

Really works great. Especially for Netflix streamed movies.

There are very strong hints that a new iPhone will be released before
the end of the year that will be Verizon compatible. Some reports are
saying this will be in addition to ATT as a provider veruss a
replacement. Some of this speculation comes from this WSJ article:

MARCH 30, 2010
New iPhone Could End ATT's U.S. Monopoly
By YUKARI IWATANI KANE, TING-I TSAI And NIRAJ SHETH

Apple Inc. plans to begin producing this year a new iPhone that could
allow U.S. phone carriers other than ATT Inc. to sell the iconic
gadget, said people briefed by the company.

The new iPhone would work on a type of wireless network called CDMA,
these people said. CDMA is used by Verizon Wireless, ATT's main
competitor, as well as Sprint Nextel Corp. and a handful of cellular
operators in countries including South Korea and Japan. The vast
majority of carriers world-wide, including ATT, use another
technology called GSM.

With Apple developing a phone with CDMA capability, its exclusive U.S.
arrangement with ATT dating to 2007 appears set to end.

Verizon Wireless, owned by Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone
Group PLC, declined to comment. An ATT spokesman said: There has
been lots of incorrect speculation on CDMA iPhones for a long time. We
haven't seen one yet and only Apple knows when that might occur.
Apple declined to comment.

Separately, Apple plans to release a new version of its current iPhone
this summer, continuing its practice of annual upgrades at about the
same time of year, said people briefed on the matter. The model is
likely to be thinner and have a faster processor, two people familiar
with the device said.

For ATT, the Apple relationship has been crucial, helping to make the
carrier the U.S. leader in lucrative smart-phone market share.
According to comScore Inc., ATT has over 43% of all U.S. smart-phone
customers, compared with 23% for Verizon. These customers are
especially attractive because they generally pay higher monthly rates
for data plans.

For several quarters, ATT's growth has come almost single-handedly
from the iPhone. In the fourth quarter of 2009, the carrier said it
activated 3.1 million new iPhones. In comparison, it counted only a
net total of 2.7 million new subscribers as some customers moved from
other phones to iPhones.

You're not going to lose the iPhone [exclusivity] and make up growth
somewhere else without bearing the cost, said Sanford C. Bernstein
Co. research analyst Craig Moffett.

The people briefed on the matter said the upgraded GSM iPhone is being
made by Taiwanese contract manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry
Co., which produced Apple's previous iPhones. The CDMA iPhone model is
being made by Pegatron Technology Corp., the contract manufacturing
subsidiary of Taiwan's ASUSTeK Computer Inc., said these people.

One person familiar with the situation said Pegatron is scheduled to
start mass producing CDMA iPhones in September. Other people said,
however, that the schedule could change and the phone may not be
available to consumers immediately after production begins.

Representatives of Pegatron and Hon Hai declined to comment.

Verizon has publicly stated its interest in the iPhone, but people
familiar with the situation said Apple originally decided against
developing a phone for Verizon to keep its development process simple,
since the technologies are incompatible.

Verizon also is upgrading its network to a higher-speed technology, so
Apple has said it believed CDMA was a short-term technology. Apple
later changed its mind as it realized Verizon's upgrade would take
longer than expected, said people familiar with the situation.

Making the iPhone available through Verizon, which has over 91 million
customers, as well as potentially other CDMA carriers could open up a
significant new market. In 2009, iPhone sales globally rose 83% to
25.1 million, far outpacing the 20% to 25% growth in smart phones
sales overall, according to Bernstein. But since Apple already
dominates smart-phone sales through existing partners, sooner rather
than later, Apple is going to have to look to find incremental
distribution, said Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi. He estimates
Verizon could help Apple nearly double the number of iPhone users in
the U.S.

ATT's relationship with Apple, a lucrative deal arranged by Apple
Chief Executive Steve Jobs, shows how such a partnership with other
carriers could present challenges.

Analysts estimate ATT pays Apple more than $600 per phone, but sells
most of them for $199 or less. Heavy iPhone users have also put an
enormous load on ATT's wireless network, pushing the carrier to a
breaking point in some markets such as New York and San Francisco.

Qualcomm Inc., which holds patent rights to CDMA, is the dominant
designer of CDMA chips.
