[Consdistlist] Survey about laminated photographs

2018-07-12 Thread Kayleigh van der Gulik
Dear all,

As part of my training in Photograph Conservation at the University of
Amsterdam I will research options for (visual) reintegration of physical
damages on laminated photographs and digital prints. In order to devise testing
procedures I would like to get insight into what types of laminates
conservators encounter most often and what physical damages they are confronted
with.

If you have experience with laminated photographs I would kindly ask you to
fill the short survey I composed. The survey consists of twelve questions and
will take less than 10 minutes to fill. Your input would be of great help.

The survey can be found here:
https://goo.gl/forms/LbDGSxdaToTc0Me42

If you have any other questions or comments you can contact me via
k.vandergu...@uva.nl

Many thanks in advance,

[Consdistlist] PROGRAMME NOW ONLINE - Symposium Rembrandt Conservation Histories, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, 8/9 November 2018

2018-07-12 Thread Esther van Duijn - PhD
On 8 and 9 November 2018, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam will host an
international symposium on the history of conservation of paintings by
Rembrandt van Rijn. The aim is to heighten awareness of how the appearance and
condition of paintings by Rembrandt can (partly) be explained by their
treatment history.

The programme is now available online:
https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/nl/rembrandt-conservation-histories

The symposium is organised on the occasion of the research and treatment of the
portraits of Marten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit by Rembrandt van Rijn, jointly
owned by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Musée du Louvre in Paris.

Important masterpieces in museum collections, such as the paintings by
Rembrandt, often have the dubious honour to have undergone numerous
conservation treatments in the past. Because of the significance of the
paintings, these treatments are generally well documented. Every country has
its own traditions, developments and approaches to conservation, with important
restorers who have played a key role in the treatment and appearance of
Rembrandt paintings.

Important date: early bird registration closes on 13 September 2018.

[Consdistlist] Register now! Preserving Modern and Contemporary Museum Collections Conference

2018-07-12 Thread pso
The Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts (CCAHA)
(http://www.ccaha.org) is pleased to present Now On View: Preserving Modern and
Contemporary Museum Collections on September 12-13, 2018 at The Broad in Los
Angeles, California.

Caring for modern and contemporary collections is a continually evolving
challenge. The 20th and 21st centuries presented a vast array of new materials
that have left collections staff in uncharted territory as they address
unprecedented preservation problems. Colors change and fade, structures lose
their integrity, and material components become obsolete. Museums and other
collecting institutions must understand the long-term needs of these items in
order to determine appropriate priorities for conservation, storage,
exhibition, documentation, and digitization. This two-day conference will
explore ways to anticipate, plan for, and address preservation concerns in
modern and contemporary collections.

Topics include:

--Exhibiting modern materials
--Preservation of time-based media
--Preservation within the balance of the law
--Artist/conservator relationship
--Considering what to save

This program is intended for collections care staff responsible for modern and
contemporary materials in museums.

To register or view a pdf of the brochure, please visit https://bit.ly/2L27x0Y.
VoCA Partnership

On day two of the conference, a dynamic session presented in partnership with
VoCA (Voices in Contemporary Art)
(http://www.voca.network) will focus on building relationships with artists.
How might the artist's voice become a key resource for the museum professionals
who preserve their work? A keynote presentation by Chad Alligood, Independent
Curator and Vice President of VoCA's Board of Directors, will address the
importance of engaging the artist in the stewardship of their work. Next, a
case study discussion will explore an existing artist/conservator relationship:
a conversation between Rachel Rivenc, Project Specialist in the Collections
Department at the Getty Conservation Institute, and artist Larry Bell. A
presentation by Lauryn Guttenplan, Associate General Counsel at the Smithsonian
Institution, will shed light on the legal and ethical aspects of working with
and interviewing artists.

These offerings will demonstrate how building strong, lasting relationships
with artists—preserving their words alongside their work—is a vital aspect of
contemporary collections care.

[Consdistlist] Workshop: Basic book conservation techniques for paper conservators

2018-07-12 Thread De Stefani, Caroline
Workshop: Basic book conservation techniques for paper conservators
20-21 September 2018
London Metropolitan Archives, London
Language: English
Teacher: Sonja Schwoll, Senior Conservation Manager, The National Archives, UK.

Course content:
The boundaries between book and paper conservation are very fluent. Book
conservators need to cover specialist paper conservation knowledge and paper
conservators often need to address mixed collections, which also contain bound
material. While each specialist conservator needs to know the limitation of
their skills, a fruitful exchange will allow assisting each other. This
workshop addresses the need of paper conservators with a basic knowledge about
book structures and their typical damages to build up a basic repertoire of
book conservation techniques. This will allow them to help stabilising book
collections and/or to better assess damages and organise their repair. It will
also allow to better identify iconic bound material with damages, which will
have to be addressed by professional accredited book conservators.
Max participants: 12
Course fee: UKP 200

[Consdistlist] New Titles in Getty Research Library's Conservation Collection

2018-07-12 Thread Sheila Cummins
Newly acquired conservation titles available in the Getty Research Library's
Conservation Collection

Every month the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) acquires new research
materials for the Conservation Collection, housed in the Research Library at
the Getty Research Institute (GRI). The collection represents an ongoing
collaboration between the GCI and the GRI to acquire and retain critical
resources required to fulfill the long-term research and scholarship needs of
the international conservation community. With its emphasis on conservation,
management, and protection of cultural property, both movable (held by museums
or libraries) and immovable (architecture, cultural heritage sites), the
collection complements the general and special collections of the Research
Library that focus on the history of the visual arts, architecture,
archaeology, and the humanities.

The latest list of Conservation Collection acquisitions can be accessed here as
a PDF:

The holdings of the Conservation Collection may be consulted at the Getty
Center or borrowed through your Library's Interlibrary Loan Department.
