Which kernel are you running? The kernel in the 8.2 release had a bug
with respect to Samba code pages. I believe that the latest kernel in
Cooker fixes this problem.

a) Fix the cdrom.

You'll also want the xscreensaver updates there.
You probably need to uninstall gnome-control-center-plus, and possible
gnome-pilot, as well as manually rm -fr /usr/share/control-center/

That probably on wraps your display. You need to set your editor to
wrap the lines for you before it sends them.

Your CD is just broken? At a mimimum you need to get a kernel and stage1
in a position to load up, via yaboot or whatever. You might be able to do
this from an hfs
