Here is one tip I had for icing cake, but I have not tried it:
Freeze cake 1 hour for easier frosting without crumbling cake
I also heard to spread a thin layer of icing for the first layer, then it is
easier to add the rest of the icing.

the frosting is at the edge. Touch it very gently
