Media Reality Check study: Fewer U.S. Dead = Less TV Coverage of
Iraq; Networks Minimize Good News From Iraq, Don't Press Democrats on
'Wrong-Headed' Predictions

Below is the text of a Media Reality Check, posted earlier today,
recounting the results of a study conducted by Rich Noyes, the MRC's
Research Director.

Now the text of the February 28 Media Reality Check study:

Fewer U.S. Dead = Less TV Coverage of Iraq
Networks Minimize Good News From Iraq, Don't Press Democrats on
Wrong-Headed Predictions

One year ago, liberal journalists depicted the surge of U.S. troops
to Iraq as a certain failure. A lot of people are going to go to bed
tonight terrified, MSNBC's Chris Matthews opined just minutes after
President Bush announced the policy on January 10, 2007. Other
journalists were only slightly more subtle. Many experts warn, it's
too little, too late, NBC's Jim Miklaszewski argued on the January
8, 2007 Nightly News. The next morning on NBC's Today, the network's
graphic describing Iraq was Lost Cause?

At the same time, leading Democrats left themselves no wiggle room as
they, too, denounced the surge. Senator Barack Obama called it wrong-
headed and countered with a proposal to pull nearly all U.S. troops
out of Iraq by March 2008. Senator Hillary Clinton came back from a
quick trip to Iraq to declare: I am opposed to this escalation,
while another Democratic candidate, Senator Joe Biden, blasted the
troop surge as a tragic mistake.

One year later, the President's surge strategy is well on its way to
succeeding. The Iraqi parliament has passed several laws meeting
required political reconciliation benchmarks. Attacks in Baghdad have
fallen up to 80 percent in the past twelve months, Reuters reported
February 16. Deaths among Iraqi military forces and civilians have
dropped by more than two-thirds, from more than 2,000 per month in
early 2007 to fewer than 600 per month since November.

And U.S. military deaths have also declined, falling from 126 in May
2007 to 40 in January 2008 and just 29 so far in February, with two
days left in the month. Yet this good news seems to have diminished
the media elite's interest in broadcasting any news from Iraq.

MRC intern Lyndsi Thomas helped tabulate all ABC, CBS and NBC evening
news stories about Iraq since the beginning of 2007, just as the
surge strategy was being implemented. After heavy coverage of the
shift to a new Iraq policy in January and February 2007, the TV
coverage began to closely track the rising and falling death rates
for U.S. soldiers in Iraq. When the number of U.S. fatalities jumped
in May, TV coverage jumped, too. When U.S. casualties began to
steadily decline, TV coverage of Iraq dramatically decreased.

[For more on how the broadcast networks are tuning out the Iraq war,
see the February 4 CyberAlert:
http://www.mrc.org/cyberalerts/2008/cyb20080204.asp#5]

While the amount of coverage has shriveled, the tone remains more
negative than positive. So far this month, the three evening
newscasts have aired just 41 items on Iraq, most (23) just brief
items read by the anchor. A mere seven stories were field reports
from Iraq. Only ABC's World News (February 13) noted the passage of
key legislation by the Iraqi parliament, followed by a unique story
the next evening on the success of the surge. The CBS Evening News
and NBC Nightly News offered no such stories in February, but NBC did
find time to report a visit to Iraq by actress Angelina Jolie.

Back in December, NBC's Tim Russert conceded that the media were less
interested in covering a successful U.S. mission in Iraq, telling
anchor Brian Williams that with the surge in Iraq and the level of
American deaths declining, it is off the front pages.

This is not neutral news judgment, but a great favor to anti-surge
Democrats, since TV's lack of interest in Iraq spares them the chore
of defending their now-discredited opposition to the surge. Does
anyone think the media would have let John McCain off the hook had
the surge failed as spectacularly as it has succeeded? -- Rich Noyes

McCain fortune
traced to organized crime

Mob figures later implicated in Arizona savings and loan
scandal

Sen.
  John McCain

John McCain's personal fortune traces back to organized crime in Arizona,
through his father-in-law, according to a report published by a multi-news
agency team called Investigative Reporters and Editors Inc.

IRE reporters Amy Silverman and John Doherty, writing in the Phoenix New
Times, note that the father of McCain's wife, James Hensley, was convicted by a
federal jury in U.S. District
Court
of Arizona in March 1948 on seven counts of filing false liquor records.
Hensley
also was charged with conspiracy to hide from federal authorities the names of
persons involved in a liquor industry racket with two companies he managed,
United Sales Company in Phoenix and United Distributors in Tucson.

The umbrella company, United Liquor, at that time held a  monopoly in
Arizona, organized and managed by Kemper Marley, who was accused of mob ties by
a reporter who was murdered in 1977.

Silverman and Doherty report that by 1955, Hensley had launched a Budweiser
distributorship in Phoenix, a franchise reportedly bestowed upon him by
Marley,
who was never indicted in the 1948 liquor-law-violation case – or a subsequent
one – despite his controlling role in the liquor distribution businesses.

According to Marley's longtime public relations man, Al Lizanetz, the
Marley liquor empire was founded by the Bronfman family dynasty of Canada which
operated Allied Finance Company, Northern Export Company and Distillers
Corporation – the Seagrams, Ltd. empire.

As chronicled
by the Rumrunners and Prohibition video shown popularly on the History
Channel, during the 1920s, the Bronfman family made millions in bootlegging,
accounting for half the illegal liquor crossing the border, working in a
profitable distribution deal with the infamous mobster Meyer Lansky, who later
moved on to establish the crime syndicates in the casinos of Havana, Cuba, in
the 1940s and 50s.

Arizona in the 1970s drew a who's who of organized crime figures seeking to
retire in the sun, including Rochester, N.Y., mob boss Joe Bonanno, who spent
his last days along the Lake Havasu shores and in a quiet home in Tucson.

In 1977, after Arizona Republic reporter Don Bolles was killed when his car
was blown up by the mob in a parking lot, a team of 36 journalists from 27 news
organizations, known as IRE, published an 80,000 word 23-part series on
organized crime in Arizona.

Dan
Nowicki and Bill Muller, reporting in the Arizona Republic March 1, 2007,
documented that in 1953, Hensley was again charged with falsifying records at
Marley's liquor firms.

Hensley was found not guilty after being defended by William Rehnquist, the
future chief justice of the Supreme Court, Nowicki and Muller wrote.

In 2000, Hensley, then 80 years old, still controlled the Budweiser
distributorship valued as a $200 million-a-year business, with annual sales of
more than 20 million cases of beer.

On Feb. 17, 2000, Pat Flannery reported in the Arizona Republic that
Hensley's beer-distribution empire was the fifth largest in the nation, a
Budweiser franchise whose bigwigs hold the No. 2 spot on Sen. John McCain's
all-time career list of corporate donors.

Since 1982, according to the Center for Public Integrity, Hensley Co.
officials have pumped $80,000 into the campaigns of McCain, Flannery wrote.
More
than a quarter of that has been donated since 1997.

Flannery further reported that in 2000, Cindy Hensley McCain, the senator's
wife, held a 37.18 percent financial interest in her father's Budweiser
distributorship, although she was not involved in day-to-day operations.

The McCain's four children held a combined 23.55 percent interest, though
their interests were at that time held in trust.

Arizona crime connections again surfaced in the 1980s when McCain was
implicated as one of the five U.S. senators named in the Keating Five
scandal.

Charles Keating Jr. and his associates paid McCain some $112,000 in political
campaign
contributions
between 1982 and 1987, while Keating was organizing a massive real estate fraud
in the then FDIC federally insured Lincoln Savings and Loan Association.

In April 1986, McCain's wife and father-in-law also invested $359,000

Cocaine galore! £7m of Colombia's finest washes up on
Cornish beaches

· Suitcase sized packages worth £1m each

· Theory that they have floated from Caribbean

Frank Partridge is partial to a spot of beachcombing. He likes to pop down to
Pentreath Beach on the Lizard peninsula in Cornwall and find out what odds and
ends have been washed in by the tide.

But rather than the usual hunks of weather-beaten wood and pieces of broken
lobster pot, Partridge's latest expedition yielded a rather more valuable haul
-
a package of cocaine with a street value of more than £1m.

As a law-abiding citizen - and clerk of the local parish council - Partridge
knew he had to had to prevent the drugs from falling into the wrong hands.

I thought if I didn't take it, someone who might not go to the police
would. So he dragged the 25kg (55lb) package off the beach and rolled it home
in a wheelbarrow.

Such events have become almost routine in Cornwall. Within the last three
weeks five similar hauls - more than £6m worth - have been discovered on the
county's beaches.

Another big haul, worth more than £1.5m, washed up on a beach in north Wales
and a single package, worth a mere £100,000 or so, was found in south Wales.

Devon and Cornwall police are working with Interpol and other global agencies
to try to find out how the drugs are ending up on British beaches.

The origin does not take much detective work; some of the packages are marked
Colombia in faded writing. But how they ended up in the sea remains a puzzle.

The age of the packages, and the presence of warm water-loving barnacles
suggests they may be floating all the way across the Atlantic from the
Caribbean. One theory is that smugglers dumped the cocaine overboard as they
were pursued by American or British anti-drug patrols.

Police are worried that other packages may be heading to the UK, or may have
already arrived, and could fall into the hands of people less scrupulous than
Partridge.

Patrols have been stepped up on beaches and customs and coastguard officers
have been asked to keep an eye out, but 500 miles of Devon and Cornwall
coastline is a challenge to police. They are also concerned that the cocaine in
the packages is particularly pure and so could harm an innocent person if they
accidentally consumed it.

The first of the packages washed up in Bude, north-east Cornwall, at the
start of the month. A few days later a wildlife researcher, James Saulino, came
across packages of drugs at Kynance Cove, on the Lizard in the south of the
county, while he was carrying out a study of porpoises.

The drugs, in a package about the size of a suitcase, were wrapped in sacking
and then layers of plastic. Saulino realised he was looking at something worth
more than £1m and called the police.

As I sat there alone waiting for the police, I was waiting for a little
mini-sub to surface and two guys with machine guns, he said.

I think it's the strong south-westerlies. This cocaine has come a long way.
It's incredible. I always thought the day would come when we would find
something extraordinary but I expected an exotic crustacean or turtle, not
millions of pounds of cocaine.

Last Saturday another package was found near Portscatho, also on the south
coast but further east. And on Sunday a package was dragged up in the nets of a
fishing trawler in Mount's Bay in the far west of Cornwall. The fishermen
handed
it over to the Penlee lifeboat crew, who passed it on to the police.

Then on Monday Partridge, 57, set off for the beach with his two dogs, Tyla
and Bessie.

I often comb the tideline if I have time, he said. When I saw the package
I knew what it was immediately - it was tied up in thick rope, with hessian
layers underneath.

Luckily I'm one of the good guys, but you wonder how many of these packages
might have turned up and not been reported.

I phoned the police straight away. They sent down a WPC who immediately
said: 'Can you keep this quiet?' I think they're a bit worried about attracting
undesirables in a new Klondike situation.

I told them I'd try but we're a tiny little village down here and it's
difficult to keep anything that quiet.

The police have yet to confirm that the latest three packages do contain
cocaine - but Detective Inspector Martin Warren, of the force's serious and
organised crime team, said they almost certainly did.

Another Lizard local, Tony Muller, 65, who saw the package, said: It's like
a film script really. The package would be worth around a million and half
pounds I'm told, and it must belong to a very angry

American System vs. Anglo-Dutch System
Dialogue

Economist Magazine Russia Editor: I Advocate the Lisbon Treaty
100%...I hate the Westphalian System!

Edward Lucas, the current editor for Russian and Eastern European affairs
for the Economist Magazine, the official publication of the British Empire, has
written a new book, The New Cold War: Putin's Russia and the Threat to the
West. During a book signing, prior to a lecture he was to deliver at the
Watson
Institute at Brown University in Providence, RI, two LaRouche PAC organizers,
Alexandra Peribikovsky and Matthew Ogden, drew him into a pointed dialogue
during which he exposed his lust for the Lisbon treaty process, in order to
eliminate the sovereignty of nation-states and bring to an end of the era of
Westphalia.

Because the dialogue yielded some juicy quotes from this explicit British
imperialist, a paraphrase follows, with some direct quotations included:

LPAC: What do you think of the Kennebunkport process,
launched at the meeting of Putin with Bush?

LUCAS: (Thick British accent) Bush said he looked into
Putin's eyes and saw his soul; I would have seen the letters KGB.

LPAC: Many people have compared the Kennebunkport proposal
to Reagan's SDI.

LUCAS: I think the concept of strategic defense is highly
over-rated. (He began to go into his spiel about so-called pipe-line politics,
the title of one of the chapters in his new book).

LPAC: While Putin was involved in the meetings around
Kennebunkport, many leading people in Moscow were repeatedly discussing the
legacy of Franklin Roosevelt.

LUCAS: Well! I think Putin has his own reasons for bringing
up FDR!

LPAC: Both the Kennebunkport proposal and the SDI are
reminiscent of Roosevelt's post-war Russian-American alliance. In fact, the
Russian-American partnership goes all the way back to the Civil War and even
the
American Revolution. And, ironically, America was always allied with the
Russians, against the British!

LUCAS: World politics were different back then.

LPAC: In the context of the crash of the entire world
financial system, what do you think about the United States entering into an
alliance with Russia and China, to stabilize the dollar, like Roosevelt did
during the Bretton Woods?

LUCAS: Why should Russia be a party to that sort of
conference? Economically, Russia is now a third-rate power. They have no
economic power. They're at the level of a Holland, or a Belgium. Why should the
Dutch, or the Belgians, have a seat at the table discussing a new world
system?

LPAC: Brussells wants to dictate the new world system,
actually! The Lisbon treaty would give the president of a United Europe a seat
in Belgium.

LUCAS: (direct quote) I am a strong advocate of the Lisbon
Treaty. I support it 100%! We should end all of this discussion and debate
about
an EU Constitution, and just do it! Just make it happen!

LPAC: So you advocate the elimination of sovereignty for the
nations of Europe?

LUCAS: The nations of Europe don't need sovereignty! They
no longer need to be separate states; Europe needs to create its own internal
market.

LPAC: That reminds me of the idea of a Pan-Europe, a One
Europe, of Edward Mosely, the British fascist from the 1940's...

LUCAS: Oh, you mean Oswald Mosely.

LPAC: What you're advocating would mean the end of the
Westphalian System.

LUCAS: (direct quote) I HATE THE WESTPHALIAN SYSTEM! The
world needs to move beyond the age of Westphalia!

LPAC: You don't believe that governments should exist to
promote the general welfare of its people?

LUCAS: I believe in international security organizations,
like NATO...International governing institutions.

LPAC: You know, here in the United States of America, we
Americans value highly the idea of national sovereignty.

LUCAS: I don't know much about the American system of
politics, but I don't believe in sovereignty. By the way, are you two part of
some specific political party or group? I am beginning to notice a certain
consistency in your questions

Brzezinski Seizing Control Over US
Policy In Slow-Motion Coup

Good background info on Gropebama here.

By:
Webster G. Tarpley

WASHINGTON DC — Events of the past few days indicate
that the Zbigniew Brzezinski faction of lunatic Russia haters have now won the
upper hand inside the secret councils of the Anglo-American finance oligarchy,
displacing the hitherto dominant George Shultz-neocon faction.

Although
George Bush and his cronies still occupy the White House, the policies that are
being carried out are coming from the Brzezinski left CIA machine. Brzezinski
has returned to public prominence in recent months due to his role as top
establishment controller for the Obama campaign. But Brzezinski is not waiting
for the outcome of the November elections to take over key parts of the US
government. Brzezinski and his left CIA allies are already moving to assert
their strategy, even as the neocons and their characteristic obsessions are
moved to the back burner. The probability of an attack on Iran or Syria is
declining, even as the danger of confrontation with Russia, China, and Pakistan
* all much more dangerous targets to trifle with * increases
exponentially.

1. KOSOVO - The independence of Kosovo has opened a new
crisis front in Eastern Europe, with the potential for very nasty complications
in regard to Russia. This is the essence of the Brzezinski anti-Russian policy.
Kosovo independence is of course a flagrant violation of all existing norms of
international law, most notably the Helsinki CSCE treaty of 1975 which finally
put an end to World War II by declaring that all borders in Europe were to be
considered final unless and until any changes had been agreed through mutual
consultation of the interested parties. Since the Serbian government in
Belgrade
is vehemently opposed to Kosovo independence, the unilateral actions of the US,
British, and NATO are the very essence of international anarchy. The new regime
in Kosovo goes far beyond the usual kleptocracy of NATO puppets favored by
Brzezinski and his circles. The new regime in Kosovo is essentially the
terrorist KLA, an organization devoted to gun-running, drug-running, and
trafficking in human slaves. The KLA is a Balkan version of Al Qaeda, and both
are wholly owned creations of the CIA and British intelligence. With Kosovo
independence, the US, British, and NATO stand ready to use armed force to
defend
the right of a terrorist gang to assert sovereignty over a segment of modern
Europe. The criminal obscenity of this policy could hardly be greater, but for
Brzezinski all methods are legitimate provided that they increase tension with
Moscow, and in that respect Kosovo independence is already a glowing
success.

2. US EMBASSY, BELGRADE - The attack on the US embassy in
Belgrade, Serbia by gangs of drunken students is a classic Brzezinski
operation.
The tactic of having an incensed rent-a-mob of swarming adolescent patsies
attack the US Embassy in order to gin up a crisis is one of Zbigniew's
signature
specialties. During the time that Brzezinski was running the foreign policy of
Trilateral puppet Jimmy Carter, there were bloody attacks on the US embassies
in
Pakistan and in Afghanistan, both countries that featured prominently in
Brzezinski's arc of crisis theory. Most famous of all was of course the attack
on the US embassy in Teheran, Iran, which led to the taking of hostages and the
huge international crisis which helped to doom the Carter administration to
extinction at the polls. If US diplomats or State Department personnel are
taken
hostage anywhere in the world in the weeks and months to come, this must be
attributed to Brzezinski.

3. SPACE WARFARE - The shooting down by the
Pentagon of a US satellite over the Pacific is a very provocative military
stunt
designed to intimidate both Moscow and Beijing, who happened to be Brzezinski's
immediate targets. This reckless and irresponsible action has raised the
specter
of an uncontrolled arms race reaching into outer space.

4. SYRIA -
Zbigniew Brzezinski himself, fresh from addressing a retreat of House Democrats
in Williamsburg Virginia, is now in Syria at the head of a RAND Corporation
delegation. The purpose of this mission should not be construed as peace in the
Middle East, although some foolish observers may read it in that way.
Brzezinski's goal is immediately to lessen Russian influence in Syria,
including
the closing of certain naval facilities that the Russian navy has maintained in
that country. In the longer run, Brzezinski would like to turn both Syria and
Iran into components of the ring he means

WASHINGTON - A Fort Wayne native and White House official acknowledged
Friday he copied large portions of an essay that appeared in a Dartmouth
College publication and presented them as his own in a News-Sentinel
column.

It is true, Tim Goeglein wrote to The Journal Gazette in an e-mail. I
am entirely at fault. It was wrong of me. There are no excuses.

He said he wrote to the author of the essay, Jeffrey Hart to apologize,
and do so categorically and without exception.

Nancy Nall, a former News-Sentinel columnist who writes a blog from her
home in Michigan, detailed the nearly word-for-word similarities of eight
paragraphs of Goeglein's 16-pargraph essay about college education, which
appeared in the News-Sentinel on Thursday, and Hart's column, which was
written about a decade ago.

Kerry Hubartt, editor of the News-Sentinel, said his newspaper learned of
the apparent plagiarism Friday when Nall wrote about it.

He said the newspaper had removed Goeglein's column from its Web site and
that editors were checking Goeglein's past columns for any other examples
of copying.

He said when the paper's investigation is complete, readers will be
notified.

If we think it's warranted, we will certainly apologize to our readers,
Hubartt said, adding that if the investigation substantiates that Goeglein
copied Hart's writings, we would not use any columns (of Goeglein's) in
the future.

Goeglein has worked in the Bush White House since 2001 as the Bush
administration's liaison to religious organizations. He formerly worked
for then-Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind.

An invention called 'the Jewish people'
By Tom Segev

Israel's Declaration of Independence states that the Jewish people arose
in the Land of Israel and was exiled from its homeland. Every Israeli
schoolchild is taught that this happened during the period of Roman rule,
in 70 CE. The nation remained loyal to its land, to which it began to
return after two millennia of exile. Wrong, says the historian Shlomo
Zand, in one of the most fascinating and challenging books published here
in a long time. There never was a Jewish people, only a Jewish religion,
and the exile also never happened - hence there was no return. Zand
rejects most of the stories of national-identity formation in the Bible,
including the exodus from Egypt and, most satisfactorily, the horrors of
the conquest under Joshua. It's all fiction and myth that served as an
excuse for the establishment of the State of Israel, he asserts.

According to Zand, the Romans did not generally exile whole nations, and
most of the Jews were permitted to remain in the country. The number of
those exiled was at most tens of thousands. When the country was conquered
by the Arabs, many of the Jews converted to Islam and were assimilated
among the conquerors. It follows that the progenitors of the Palestinian
Arabs were Jews. Zand did not invent this thesis; 30 years before the
Declaration of Independence, it was espoused by David Ben-Gurion, Yitzhak
Ben-Zvi and others.

If the majority of the Jews were not exiled, how is it that so many of
them reached almost every country on earth? Zand says they emigrated of
their own volition or, if they were among those exiled to Babylon,
remained there because they chose to. Contrary to conventional belief, the
Jewish religion tried to induce members of other faiths to become Jews,
which explains how there came to be millions of Jews in the world. As the
Book of Esther, for example, notes, And many of the people of the land
became Jews; for the fear of the Jews fell upon them.

Zand quotes from many existing studies, some of which were written in
Israel but shunted out of the central discourse. He also describes at
length the Jewish kingdom of Himyar in the southern Arabian Peninsula and
the Jewish Berbers in North Africa. The community of Jews in Spain sprang
from Arabs who became Jews and arrived with the forces that captured Spain
from the Christians, and from European-born individuals who had also
become Jews.

The first Jews of Ashkenaz (Germany) did not come from the Land of Israel
and did not reach Eastern Europe from Germany, but became Jews in the
Khazar Kingdom in the Caucasus. Zand explains the origins of Yiddish
culture: it was not a Jewish import from Germany, but the result of the
connection between the offspring of the Kuzari and Germans who traveled to
the East, some of them as merchants.

We find, then, that the members of a variety of peoples and races, blond
and black, brown and yellow, became Jews in large numbers. According to
Zand, the Zionist need to devise for them a shared ethnicity and
historical continuity produced a long series of inventions and fictions,
along with an invocation of racist theses. Some were concocted in the
minds of those who conceived the Zionist movement, while others were
offered as the findings of genetic studies conducted in Israel.

Prof. Zand teaches at Tel Aviv University. His book, When and How Was the
Jewish People Invented? (published by Resling in Hebrew), is intended to
promote the idea that Israel should be a state of all its citizens -
Jews, Arabs and others - in contrast to its declared identity as a Jewish
and democratic state. Personal stories, a prolonged theoretical
discussion and abundant sarcastic quips do not help the book, but its
historical chapters are well-written and cite numerous facts and insights
that many Israelis will be astonished to read for the first time.

The mosquito from Kiryat Yam

On March 27, 1948, a meeting was held in Hiafa concerning the fate of the
Bedouin of Arab al-Ghawarina in the Haifa area. They must be removed from
there, so that they, too, will not add to our troubles, Yosef Weitz, of
the Keren Kayemeth (Jewish National Fund), wrote in his personal diary.
Two months later, Weitz reported to the organization's director, Our
Haifa Bay has been evacuated completely and there is hardly a remnant of
those who encroached our border. They were probably expelled to Jordan;
some were allowed to remain in the village of Jisr al-Zarqa. The fate of
the Arab al-Ghawarina Bedouin has recently made the
