Re: [CTRL] Turning the corner on liberal education policies
-Caveat Lector- Looks like we are going to be forced to pick Spanish as a second language. Wonder if any of the French speaking people in Canada have this problem when they imigrate to America? If this is True then we should have the schools in the Northern part of the US teach French as a second language just in case. Also that will give the US the potential of becoming Trilingual when the issue comes up - which it well might. I do not disagree with the findings - just what the future may hold for the USA if the trend of learning Spanish as a second University language (in the South, only?) continues. Smart News wrote: -Caveat Lector- Dear List, Here's some data showing why long term bilingual education is the best thing for second language students. Sincerely, Neil Brick PS. also check http://www.ncbe.gwu.edu/ncbepubs/resource/effectiveness for a 96 page document that backs this up. Research has shown that the longer students are in two-way developmental bilingual education programs, the higher the students score on standardized tests in English. The second most effective program for second language learners is Late-Exit Bilingual Education plus content ESL. "...The elementary school program with the most success in language minority students' long term academic achievement, as measured by standardized test across all subject areas, is two-way developmental bilingual education. As a group, students in this program...reach the 50th percentile or NCE (National Curve Equivalent) in their second language generally after 4-5 years of schooling in both languagesStudents in well-taught bilingual classes that continue through at least sixth grade (late-exit or maintenance bilingual programs) with substantial cognitive and academic development through both first and second languages, are also able to reach the 50th percentile or NCE within 4-7 years and maintain their academic performance at secondary level in academic classes taught all in English." (From data aggregated from a series of 3-6 year longitudinal studies from well-implemented, mature programs in five school districts and from the Ramirez 1991 dataset, c Thomas and Collier, 1995) Basic interpersonal communication skills (BICS) refer to context embedded speech (like visual cues and experiential activities), which differ from cognitive academic language proficiency (CALP) which takes place in a context reduced environment (manipulating concepts and solving problems). (Cummins, 1984). Some people have made the mistake that once a student can converse in English (BICS), they will naturally perform well academically (CALP) in English. It has been postulated that BICS and CALP are two different sets of skills. "a) language proficiency includes proficiency in academic tasks as well as basic conversation, b) cognitive academic language proficiency may take 5 to 7 years to achieve, and c) skills learned in the first language automatically transfer to the second language." (Language Minority Students in the Mainstream Classroom, Carrasquillo and Rodriguez, Multilingual Matters Ltd., c 1996 p. 26-27) Collier's research (1987) supports the theory that LEP (Limited English Proficiency) students may need 5 to 7 years to perform well (like native learners) on academic tasks. Willig (1985) "concluded that bilingual education programs that supported the minority language were consistently superior...(and) produce higher performance in tests of achievement throughout the curriculum. Small to moderate advantages were found...in reading, language skills, mathematics and overall achievement (in second language tests in English)." A conclusion found in the Ramirez (Ramirez, Yuen and Ramey, 1991) study cited above is, "Spanish speaking students can be provided with substantial amounts of primary language instruction without impeding their acquisition of English language and reading skillsThe data suggest that by Grade 6, students provided with English-only instruction may actually fall further behind their English speaking peers. Data also document that learning a second language will take six or more years'." (Foundations of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, 2nd Ed., Colin Baker, Multilingual Matters Ltd., c 1996 p.213-215) The studies and theory above show that for students to achieve the highest test scores, they need to be in at least late-exit bilingual education programs. [CTRL] Fw: Was CNN Involved in Murder Plot?
-Caveat Lector- -Original Message- From: Ian Goddard [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thursday, July 08, 1999 7:10 PM Subject: Was CNN Involved in Murder Plot? The following report covers details of a report from the British newspaper The Independent. Not only was CNN ordered to evacuate all CNN personnel and facilities from a Serbian TV station that they were in, which had become targeted for bombing, but CNN apparently also attempted to lure a high Serbian official to the doomed TV station for an interview that would put him in the building just as the cruise missiles struck. Since the Serbian official was late for his appointment with CNN, that murder failed, however, the mass murder of the many Serbian journalists and others was a complete success; and I believe that it did some damaged to their communication facilities too. === http://www.wsws.org/articles/1999/jul1999/cnn-j08.shtml === 8 July 1999 World Socialist Web Site Was CNN involved in a NATO effort to assassinate the Serbian information minister? Chris Marsden On Friday, July 2 the Independent newspaper in Britain ran an article by its Belgrade war correspondent Robert Fisk entitled "Taken in by the NATO line". The article presents a devastating picture of the role of the press corps in the war against Yugoslavia. Fisk shows how, with rare execptions, reporters abandoned any standpoint of objectivity and adopted uncritically the official rationale for the war. For the most part infected themselves with the anti-Serb hysteria of US, British and NATO officials, they sought to justify the bombing campaign by reporting NATO propaganda as fact and accepting without question the statements of NATO spokesman Jamie Shea, President Clinton and Prime Minister Blair. He cites the example of a CNN reporter in Belgrade who "astounded one of his English colleagues after NATO had bombed a narrow road bridge in the Yugoslav village of Varvarin, killing dozens of civilians, many of whom fell to their death in the River Morava. 'That'll teach them not to stand on bridges,' he roared". Fisk notes, "This was not the kind of language he used on air, of course, where CNN's report on the bridge killings was accompanied by the remark that there had been civilian casualties 'according to the Serb authorities'--all this when CNN's own crew had been there and filmed the decapitated corpse of the local priest". The Independent correspondent goes on to suggest that the collaboration of major media outlets with the NATO military campaign went beyond dishonest and unethical journalistic practices. At the end of the article he suggests that CNN and the network's Larry King Live show may have been complicit in an attempt to assassinate Serbian Information Minister Aleksander Vucic. Fisk writes: "Two days before NATO bombed the Serb Television headquarters in Belgrade, CNN received a tip from its Atlanta headquarters that the building was to be destroyed. They were told to remove their facilities from the premises at once, which they did. "A day later, Serbian Information Minister Aleksander Vucic received a faxed invitation from the Larry King Live show in the US to appear on CNN. They wanted him on air at 2:30 in the morning of 23 April and asked him to arrive at Serb Television half an hour early for make-up. "Vucic was late--which was just as well for him since NATO missiles slammed into the building at six minutes past two. The first one exploded in the make-up room where the young Serb assistant was burned to death. CNN calls this all a coincidence, saying that the Larry King show, put out by the entertainment division, did not know of the news department's instruction to its men to leave the Belgrade building". The World Socialist Web Site has sought to obtain a response from the Larry King Live program in Washington and CNN headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia to the description of events provided by Fisk. The publicist for Larry King Live and the press spokes- person for CNN News have failed to return repeated calls. Meanwhile, Fisk has come under attack from sections of the British media. On July 4 Henry Porter of the Observer, one of the newspapers most fervent in its support of NATO's war, published a reply to Fisk's piece, all but accusing the Independent reporter of being a stooge of Yugoslav President Milosevic. Porter asserts that Fisk "was undeniably aided by the Serb authorities" and filed reports on the war "refracted through the lens of Serbian interest". Porter grants there was "almost universal concern among editors and reporters about the level of accuracy of NATO briefings" and admits there is good reason to conclude that "the alliance was bent on an almost racist crusade against the Serbs". This, however, does not prevent him from indulging in a bit of anti-Serb racism of his own, noting that

Ingraham With scarcely a murmur of dissent, the seemingly impossible was accomplished. Lacking understanding, the Swiss people voted this spring to end the unique soundness of their currency as well as their country s financial power and independence. Oblivious to the consequences of abandoning the Swiss franc s tie to gold, the people of Switzerland the world s only direct democracy approved a new constitution that abolishes the traditional gold convertibility that for generations made the Swiss franc literally "as good as gold." This historic decision is the culmination of an orchestrated international assault to wipe out the last remaining obstacle to an inflatable global paper currency, long a goal of American and European Insiders of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) and the Trilateral Commission. With good reason, the Insiders have loathed the presence on the international financial market of this stable currency backed by a precious metal, which puts a brake on inflation and arbitrary manipulation. Since 1933, when FDR stripped Americans of their gold under false pretenses, the Insider game has been central bank control of printing-press money and credit, expanding and contracting the supply to suit their own agenda, creating booms and busts cleverly called "business cycles." Having reduced the purchasing power of the U.S. dollar to pennies over the past 60 years, the Insiders were ready to move into the final global phase. Plan of Attack As a matter of necessity, the Swiss franc s disciplinary tie to gold had to be abolished. But how? Franklin Roosevelt did it by executive order. But this would not have been allowed in Switzerland with its weak central government and strong tradition of independence in the cantons. What it boiled down to was that the Swiss people would have to be made to do it to themselves. Masters at psychological and semantic warfare, the Insider cabal concocted a contemptible smokescreen, using the suffering of the Jewish people as bait. The New York Times and the Washington Post launched an avalanche of shockingly vituperative accusations against the highly respected Swiss banking industry. The charge: Swiss banks still held gold deposited by Jews who became victims of the Holocaust. Spearheaded by the fabulously wealthy Edgar Bronfman (CFR), owner of the multinational liquor company Seagram and president of the World Jewish Congress, the "funds without heirs" assault quickly mushroomed into a "humanitarian" rescue mission for "abused" Jews who had had bank doors "slammed in their faces" when they tried to collect. Nowhere in this sustained propaganda was there a semblance of proof of any "unclaimed assets." Overlooked was the fact that in the 1950s and again in 1962, Swiss banks formally investigated the dormant accounts of persons who may have died in the war and paid out tens of millions to survivors and Jewish causes. In spite of this, the pressure was so intense that the Swiss government was forced to agree to convene an Independent Commission of Eminent Persons to audit the banks records yet again. The Commission s chairman was none other than Paul Volker of Federal Reserve fame and powerful member of both the CFR and the Trilateral Commission. That this was a transparent fraud was revealed by the American Spectator: "Unfortunately, no reliable study exists, nor can one be undertaken sixty years later, even by eminent persons, that can verify from where and how money came into Switzerland during the 1930s." Meanwhile, Switzerland s Journal de Geneve reported an astonishing warning made public by Bronfman: "Edgar Bronfman estimates that if the Swiss bankers do not seize the unique opportunity to re-establish their reputations, he foresees the end of Switzerland as a great world banking center, for every essential mark of confidence will have disappeared the free world may well end up by finding such a banking system reprehensible." The shocking truth is that the American/European Insider cabal has the power to carry out this extraordinary threat. That this was perfectly understood by the Swiss Federal Council was soon apparent. First came the announcement of a Swiss Humanitarian Foundation endowed with seven billion francs, interest from

[CTRL] From The Horses Mouth
-Caveat Lector- www.devvy.com Quotes Steeped in Reality: Late August 1998, Bill Clinton speaking in Ireland in response to a question as to what would he do if removed from office through impeachment: ".You know, by the time you become the leader of a country, someone else makes all the decisions." People like me who have done extensive research on the issue of a one world government, one world bank, one world religion and one world police force [UN Hessians], understand that the international bankers have been running the show for a couple hundred years. For a reaffirmation of this belief, I now quote robert reich, former Secretary of Labor under Billy Clinton, January 7, 1999 issue of USA Today, mr. reich says this: "The dirty little secret is that both houses of Congress are irrelevant." reich cut to the chase when he said that "America's domestic policy is now being run by Alan Greenspan and the Federal Reserve and America's foreign policy is now being run by the International Monetary Fund [IMF]." And, "...when the president decides to go to war, he no longer needs a declaration of war from Congress." Well, that pretty much sums it up and it's just a reaffirmation of what I have been saying for years: Congress has rendered themselves impotent through all these treaties and allowing president after president since FDR to simply circumvent the Constitution using executive orders. These presidents are nothing more than a thinly disguised Monarchy ensconced on Pennsylvania Ave. The rest of this horse and pony show conducted by Congress everyday is nothing more than an illusion for public consumption. Reality isn't easy to digest sometimes but if the people know the truth, perhaps they will finally get off their duffs and work to stop the destruction of our beloved Republic - before it's too late. Straight from the mouth of one of Clinton's former cabinet heads and still some people won't believe it. It surely must be part of a vast-right wing conspiracy! If you don't know who runs this gigantic magical money machine called the IMF, you should. They [and the privately owned "Federal" Reserve] are stealing US blind and your grandchildren will forever be in bondage to these bankers unless they are stopped and this remedy must come from Congress. I say grandchildren because your children are already in bondage. If you'd like to know more about the IMF, just go to www.infoseek.com or www.yahoo.com and type in International Monetary Fund. A ton of web sites will come up from this exclusive boys club and you can read all about them in their own words. Print this out and give it to ten people and tell them to do the same. Re: [CTRL] Should homosexuals who areHIV-negative
-Caveat Lector- From: day [EMAIL PROTECTED] The problem is that homosexuality is being pushed on us as an alternative lifestyle I don't feel 'pushed upon' at all... Once again, whatever 2 consenting adults wish to do in the privacy of their bedroom is their own business, whether they are of the same sex or not... and our children are being taught to 'embrace' homosexuals when they should be taught that homosexuality is a sin. One should ALWAYS embrace the sinner, as Jesus did... You seem to affiliate yourself with the Pharisees...who taunted Our Lord with the LETTER of the law, but hadn't a clue as to the SPIRIT... They condemned Him for 'embracing sinners', too... Quite frankly, no one has ever been able to tell me what homosexuals do sexually that heteros don't also engage in... LOL.LOL...ROTF Now, let's see.Hm..na, let's not get into what they do with their favorite little petsgerbils, aka colon speedbumps. You know this for a fact? Funny, you seem to have an EXTREMELY INTIMATE knowledge of what gays do sexually...firsthand experience, perhaps? The gays I know laugh at such 'urban legends'... And I've had straight guys show me publications where straight men and women did any number of 'activities' with animals of all sizes, so it would seem that a small rodent in one's anus is not the sole province of gay men... Oh, and sitting on the agitator of the washing machine is a good one; And how are you privvy to THIS little tidbit... I've heard a couple of straight women claim they get turned on by the washing machine, so again this activity does not seem to be exclusive to gays... God only knows it fits. My neighbor is a doctor..he won't even repeat some of the stuff he deals with with these people. My guess is that he is 'having you on'... His only comment is that he's embarrassed and disgraced at what he's pulled out of their colon. Well, then he should get into another line of work... What is your neighbor's medical specialty, and where did he get his education? And no one won't convince me that straight guys don't do the same thing... Now, let's go on to a different topic please. You've lost at this one. Not that I've seen...you're the one who's consistently lost every agument... In a message dated 7/10/99 9:06:45 AM Central Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: He Da Man; He Da Main Man! From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Augusta (GA) Chronicle, July 4, 1999 Letters to the Editor Alleges G. W. Bush has connection with Freemasons George W. Bush is the leading fund raiser for the Republican Party because he is backed by the Texas Freemasons. Naturally, if he is backed by them, he would be backed by all Freemasons. Since the Freemasons essentially own and operate America, he is bound to be a shoo-in for the presidency. I was up on the Internet last year browsing the Mason websites and clicked on a picture of George W. Bush signing a document at a table and he was surrounded by a group of Masons dressed in suits and displaying their lambskin tool pouches in full view. For those of you who doubt the presence of Masons in business, just start looking for pyramids, stars, arches or miters in the logos of corporations or businesses in your area. If you doubt the presence of Masons in the government, just look at the pyramid on the back of the $1 bill or visit the Washington monument the next time you are in Washington, D.C. I thing all candidates should have to declare whether they are members of secret organizations, like the Masons or the Council on Foreign Relations, or it they are primarily backed by these organizations. With Mr. Bush and his big-business backers you will get no real change in government. The accumulation of wealth and power is the highest expression there is in a secular society. We have reached that plateau. For our government to achieve any higher status, it must step up onto a spiritual plane higher than the one it is on now. George W. Bush is powerless to take that step. Radar-horizon calculations show the boat to be about 60 ft in height, and thus it is more like a ship. The FBI has since conceded its existence, but, while they did say their search for missile-firing suspects had "left no stone unturned," they now tell us that they failed to identify this "boat" captured on radar speeding away from the crash scene at a rate matching top speeds of most Navy ships. So a large ship simply got away, and, except for the known radar tracks, miraculously evaded the myriad tracking systems (including IR-video satellite and Navy systems) that covered the area. Will wonders never cease?! [*] http://www.multipull.com/twacasefile/boat.html Here then, from The New York Observer, is the latest on the unidentified fleeing ship tracked below FLT800: === http://www.observer.com/pages/frontpage6.htm The New York Observer (7/12/99, page 1) Radar Shows 'Getaway Boat' Fleeing Flight 800 Crash by Philip Weiss The third anniversary of the crash of Trans World Airlines Flight 800 is July 17, so it's a good time to look into what even the Government reluctantly concedes is a mystery about the crash: "the 30-knot track." The 30-knot track is the radar trail of a boat that was the closest vessel to the 747 when it exploded and that then headed out to sea on a beeline from right under the burning wreckage. "That boat is extremely suspect," said William S. Donaldson, a retired Navy commander who supports the missile theory of the plane's destruction. "He not only doesn't turn to render assistance, he runs." "It's like the getaway car," said Graeme Sephton, an electrical engineer who is active in an Internet researchers organization that is highly critical of the Federal investigation. The Government doesn't think the unidentified boat is such a big deal. "It does not intrigue me," said Peter Goelz, the National Transportation Safety Board managing director. F.B.I. spokesman Joseph Valiquette added, "In an ideal world, it would be nice to know everything, but I don't think the F.B.I. or the N.T.S.B. claims to know everything that happened in the crash." This is a convenient position for the F.B.I. to adopt now. The most unsettling thing about the 30-knot track is that the F.B.I. essentially suppressed knowledge of it when the crash was foremost on the public agenda. Two years ago, the F.B.I. closed its criminal investigation into the crash, and James Kallstrom, then the lead F.B.I. investigator, testified before Congress that the agency's "exhaustive" efforts had included "tracking of all air and waterborne vessels in the area at the time of the explosion followed by appropriate interviews." Mr. Kallstrom later held a lengthy press conference saying that agents had "left no stone unturned." He went into great detail about suspicious boats. "Who is there in the water? Who could be escaping in any direction?" he said. "We identified 371 vessels in the Long Island area and did investigation on those vessels. For the one-month period, we identified 20,000 records of vessels that entered New York Harbor and did an investigation of those vessels." The F.B.I. even seized some boats to inspect the flooring for burns characteristic of backfire from a shoulder-fired rocket. Mr. Kallstrom's press conference was aimed at discrediting the missile theory, and it worked. In an editorial titled "Conspiracy Inoculation," The New York Times congratulated him for an "extraordinary" performance. The F.B.I. had shared its "voluminous evidence" with "admirable thoroughness and openness." The closing of the criminal investigation allowed the N.T.S.B. to hold hearings on the crash, one month later, where it offered hundreds of exhibits, a few of which depicted a "30-knot track" 10 miles out in the Atlantic. Radar data collected during the last minute of the T.W.A. flight revealed the two closest objects to the plane, both between three and four miles away, as a Navy P-3 airplane and what the exhibit called simply a "30-knot target." Radar data for the next 20 minutes showed the mystery boat heading on a beeline out to sea,

A press release from the group (yes, they issue press releases!) indicates that cDc plans to unveil its latest "remote network administration tool" today at DefCon VII, a well-known "hacker" conference, attended by members of the hacking underground, security experts and law enforcement types. A number of computer companies, including anti-virus researchers, issued warnings to computer users ahead of its release. It is expected that updates to anti-virus and other security software will be available within days of the software's release (if not sooner) to protect against the software. Despite its widespread use as a "hacking" too, cDc now portray their BackOrifice software as a legitimate network administration tool. According to their press release: Back Orifice 2000 is a best-of-breed network administration tool, granting sysadmins access to every Windows machine on their network. Using Back Orifice 2000, network administrators can perform typical desktop support duties without ever leaving their desk. Some notable features include: - Windows NT support (as well as Windows 95 and 98) - an open plugin architecture to allow for 3rd party add-ons - strong cryptography to ensure secure network administration - open source, available under the GNU Public License "It's a totally professional tool. Essentially it sews together Microsoft networks in ways that were never possible before," says Mike Bloom, Chief Technical Officer for Gomi Media, Toronto. "BO2K is a control freak's dream and the strong crypto feature gives the legitimate administrator a level of confidence that just didn't exist before. It's one kickass app". Back Orifice 2000 evolved from Back Orifice (the name itself a pun on the "Back Office" server suite from Microsoft), released by the cDc at last year's Defcon. New research reveals that email may be the best medium for breaking bad news ("Hey Joe...you're fired!"). Stephanie Sussman, with several other researchers from the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, found that individuals tend to be more honest when delivering bad news via email than they are in person or by telephone. This finding has some important ramifications, especially for business. Co-workers, for instance, may respond more honestly (and more constructively) via email to the suggestions or performance of others. Specifically, Sussman's research found that coworkers were more likely to convey constructive criticism when communicating using email than they would by phone or in person. The researchers believe that email imbues honesty as it gives the impression of anonymity and detatchment, thereby reducing users' inhibitions. Email numbers growing According to the Electronic Messaging Association, there are roughly 22.3 million home Internet users in the US. Those users send, on average, 64 email messages each week. This means that there will be 219 billion email messages sent this year in the US alone. While this has profound implications for postal service organisations, it also has some more immediate ramifications for individuals. A fair percentage of email serves only to propagate hoax and chain-letter messages (I won't even try to guess how much of the email is spam!). Each month sees the birth of new hoax and chain-letter messages, many of which are mutations of messages already circulating. Unfortunately, many people still take these messages seriously. [CTRL] Fwd: The trial by ordeal of Jamwes Sanders
Recent articles on the net have celibrated the exhonoration of Don Adams, who was acquitted of obviously trumped up charges resulting from his anti-Clinton protests and the reaction of teamster thugs. It is well that we celibrate each and every triumph of justice in this nation, justice having become increasingly an endangered species in our society. Thus it is that I must again call your attention to the ongoing ordeal of James and Elizabeth Sanders, convicted of the theft of a swatch of fabric from the wreckage of TWA 800. They were prosecuted under an obscure law intended to deter souvenir hunters, and in one of the case's many bizarre twists, the FBI agent in charge of the TWA 800 investigation, James Kallstrom, also broke that same law. Kallstrom, as was reported in the newspapers and admitted to in court documents, removed an item from the wreck of TWA 800 to give away as a memento; the very act the law in question was written to deter. To be accurate, James and Elizabeth Sanders didn't steal anything. The actual removal of the fabric was done by TWA pilot and crash investigator Terrell Stacy. Stacy didn't want a souvenir. Neither did James Sanders. The fabric was sent to a lab for analysis of a strange red residue which tainted three rows of seats in the wreckage of the 747. Journalists are always exhorted to "check their facts". James Sanders did just that. The government stated, as a fact, that the red residue was 3M seat glue, and James Sanders checked that fact. In hindsight, he had good reason to. For such insolence, James Sanders and his wife were arrested and charged and convicted. Meanwhile, James Kallstrom, guilty of the same exact offense of removing pieces of the TWA 800 wreckage, walks free. Terrell Stacy, who actually broke the law in question, was charged with a misdemeanor. The Sanders have been convicted of a felony. The reason for the disparity in charges between the man who took the fabric and the couple that man gave it to is the government's desperation to lock the Sanders away from the public, to bury with them the darkest of dark secrets of this whole affair. The results of the lab test on the Sanders' swatch of TWA 800 seat fabric called into question the official government declaration that the strange red residue was 3M seat glue. And evidence entered into the court record proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the government not only lied when it stated that the red residue was seat glue, more damning yet, did so knowingly and with malice of forethought. The government claimed that a lab test done by a NASA scientist, Dr. Charles Bassett, proved that the residue was 3M seat glue. On the basis of that one result, the government maintained and maintains to this very day that the red residue was seat glue. But during the discovery phase of the Sanders trial, Dr. Charles Bassett swore under oath that his tests did not link the red residue to seat glue. More to the point, the tests he was asked to perform for the NTSB could not have made such a determination. Even more damning, efforts by Bassett to coax the normally pale green 3M seat glue into assuming the reddish color of the residue all failed. This is the "other verdict" in the trial of James Sanders. The government lied when it said it had a lab test proving that the red residue was seat glue. In fact, now documented in a court of law, what they had was a lab test which proved exactly the opposite. In the trial of James Sanders, regardless of the verdicts handed down by the jury, it is the government that leaves the courtroom branded a liar. It's official now. The government is lying to the public about TWA 800. The government is lying to the public about TWA 800. The government is lying to the public about TWA 800. The government is lying to the public about TWA 800. And not just about the red residue and bogus lab tests, many other lies have been exposed, including the initial denial of the status of the warning zones, the presence of military vessels near the crash site, the workability of the pingers on the flight recorders; even the government's explanation for a suspicious line of flight recorder data has been proven to be a lie. The claim that a noseless 747 can maintain stable flight and climb 1000 feet per the government's cover story is both aerodynamically and structurally impossible. But the government's claim that a lab test proved that the red residue was seat glue is not only another in a long list of proven lies, it's a lie which was exposed in a court of law. Just think about what that really means, to know for a fact, proven in a court of law, that the government is lying to the public about TWA 800. p It means, for one thing, that the mainstream media, which still parrots the claim that the red residue is seat glue, is also lying; yet another nail in the coffin of the mainstream media's credibility. It means that the government is using your tax money to pay public relations
[CTRL] US Concentration Camps?? An investigation.
-Caveat Lector- Results of "Concentration Camp" Trip David Hoffman ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Hello all. I just got back from my ten-day "concentration camp" tour of three states. I brought back my striped uniform and have a new tattoo on my forearm to show for it. Seriously, I got this list of supposed camps off of Don Bradley's website (www.don-bradely.com). Bradley - an author of various new age subjects - has been ranting and raving for the past year about hundreds of camps with "machinegun towers, moats, gas-chambers, and roving armed patrols." Several of my colleagues (Robert Sterling, publisher of the alternative press, The Konformist, and a friend) went to the locations in California that Bradley ranted about (the ones with the machine-gun towers and gas-chambers) and came back laughing their asses off. To say that there was nothing there of the kind Bradley ranted about is an understatement. When Sterling repeatedly asked Bradley to come up with some facts (which Bradley had earlier promised to deliver), he failed to reply. Yet Bradley rants on. Following are what I found on my trip. In my estimation, Bradley - who is NOT a trained journalist and seems to possess no clue as to how to check facts (assuming he even wants to) - is a self-deluded paranoic and a pathological liar. - D.H. THE LIST Oklahoma Alleged Internment Camps Location 1: Tinker AFB: This is a civilian detention facility, all base personnel are prohibited from going near the area, and the area is under constant guard. Haven't been there yet, but plan to check it out. Location 2: McAlester (100 mi south-east of Norman): WWII German/Italian POW camp being renovated. There is nothing there but a Little League baseball field! What I think FEMA is planning on doing is turning the bleachers into baricades, and using 12-year olds to hit escaping prisoners with baseball bats. Location 3: Will Rogers Air Port: This is a newly constructed FEMA facility, and it is believed that it will be used as a primary processing center for prisoners West of the Mississippi River. I've been to Will Rogers airport. It is an airport - nothing more. Texas Alleged Internment Camps Location 1: Ft. Hood (just north of Austin) has a newly built concentration camp, constructed complete with towers, high fencing, and barbed wire. I drove around the base and saw nothing suspicious. I also talked with a seargent who has been on the base six years, and is a tank gunner (and who hates the Army). We struck up a conversation around our mutual interest in armor. After I gained his trust, I asked him about such facilities. He just laughed. I also talked to a junior tank officer. He laughed harder. (I did have a fun time traversing the tank turret and looking through the infrared site though!) Location 2: Forth Worth (40 mi north-west of Dallas): Federal prison under construction on the old Carswell AFB in Ft Worth, TX. Additional: The military hospital is within the compound. New buldings are being constructed at a panic rate. Haven't been there, but I called them. It is a a womens' hospital and prison. There is no new construction going on "at a panic rate," according to them. (I know,I know Don, they are all part of a conspiracy of silence!) Location 3: Beaumont Port Arthur (60 mi east of Houston) area: there were thousands of acres of federal camps already built on the order of detention camp design complete with the double row chain link fencing with the razor styled concertina wire on top of each row. Some but not all of these facilities are currently being used for low-risk prisoners who require a minimum of supervision. However, any of these facilities could be returned into an armed internment detention center within a 24-hr. period. Additional: The area is in Beaumont off Hwy 69 south and consists of thousands of acres of barbed-wire bordered camps. Those nearest the road are kept immaculate and are occupied by juveniles while those further from the road are not quite so nice. Most of the facilities are un-occupied but have skeleton crews on duty. Haven't been there, but I suppose any federal prison facility could be "returned into an armed internment detention center within a 24-hour period." What does that prove? Arkansas Alleged Internment Camps Ft. Chaffee (100 mi east of Tulsa) Has a new runway for aircraft, new detention camp facilities with capacity of 20,000 prisoners. (Dave: Take photos of rows of barracks at Chaffee, then make your way to the back of the base (south end) and try to find the FEMA compound. It has towers near it and a large fence with wire around the top.) I drove all around the base, and outside it, to the south (where the alleged FEMA facility is supposed to be), which is a residential neighborhood. The base is practically deserted. I counted two people the entire time I was there. A civilian worker told me the base is being shut down, which seems to fit in with what I saw.
[CTRL] Christ a Fiction.
-Caveat Lector- Christ a Fiction (1997) Robert M. Price I remember a particular Superboy comic book in which the Boy of Steel somehow discovers that in the future, he is thought to be as mythical as Peter Pan and Santa Claus. Indignant at this turn of events, he flies at faster than light speed and enters the future to set the record straight. He does a few super-deeds and vindicates himself, then comes home. So Superboy winds up having the last laugh --or does he? Of course, it is only fiction! The people in the future were quite right! Superboy is just as mythical as Santa Claus and Peter Pan. This seems to me a close parallel to the efforts of Christian apologists to vindicate as sober history the story of a supernatural savior who was born of a virgin, healed the sick, raised the dead, changed water into wine, walked on water, rose from the grave and ascended bodily into the sky. I used to think, when I myself was a Christian apologist, a defender of the evangelical faith, that I had done a pretty respectable job of vindicating that story as history. I brought to bear a variety of arguments I now recognize to be fallacious, such as the supposed closeness of the gospels to the events they record, their ostensibly use of eyewitness testimony, etc. Now, in retrospect, I judge that my efforts were about as effective in the end as Superboy's! When all is said and done, he remains a fiction. One caveat: I intend to set forth, briefly, some reasons for the views I now hold. I do not expect that the mere fact that I was once an evangelical apologist and now see things differently should itself count as evidence that I must be right. That would be the genetic fallacy. It would be just as erroneous to think that John Rankin [?] must be right in having embraced evangelical Christianity since he had once been an agnostic Unitarian and repudiated it for the Christian faith. In both cases, what matters is the reasons for the change of mind, not merely the fact of it. Having got that straight, let me say that I think there are four senses in which Jesus Christ may be said to be a "fiction." First (and, I warn you, this one takes by far the most explaining): It is quite likely, though certainly by no means definitively provable, that the central figure of the gospels is not based on any historical individual. Put simply, not only is the theological "Christ of faith" a synt hetic construct of theologians, a symbolic "Uncle Sam" figure. But if you could travel through time, like Superboy, and you went back to First-Cen tury Nazareth, you would not find a Jesus living there. Why conclude this? There are three reasons, which I must oversimplify for time's sake. 1) In broad outline and in detail, the life of Jesus as portrayed in the gospels corresponds to the worldwide Mythic Hero Archetype in which a divine hero's birth is supernaturally predicted and conceived, the infant hero escapes attempts to kill him, demonstrates his precocious wisdom already as a child, receives a divine commission, defeats demons, wins acclaim, is hailed as king, then betrayed, losing popular favor, executed, often on a hilltop, and is vindicated and taken up to heaven. These features are found world wide in heroic myths and epics. The more closely a supposed biography, say that of Hercules, Apollonius of Tyana, Padma Sambhava, of Gautama Buddha, corresponds to this plot formula, the more likely the historian is to conclude that a historical figure has been transfigured by myth. And in the case of Jesus Christ, where virtually every detail of the story fits the mythic hero archetype, with nothing left over, no "secular," biographical data, so to speak, it becomes arbitrary to assert that there must have been a historical figure lying back of the myth. There may have been, but it can no longer be considered particularly probable, and that's all the historian can deal with: probabilities. There may have been an original King Arthur, but there is no particular reason to think so. There may have been a historical Jesus of Nazareth, too, but, unlike most of my colleagues in the Jesus Seminar, I don't think we can simply assume there was. 2) Specifically, the passion stories of the gospels strike me as altogether too close to contemporary myths of dying and rising savior gods including Osiris, Tammuz, Baal, Attis, Adonis, Hercules, and Asclepius. Like Jesus, these figures were believed to have once lived a life upon the earth, been killed, and risen shortly thereafter. Their deaths and resurrections were in most cases ritually celebrated each spring to herald the return of the life to vegetation. In many myths, the savior's body is anointed for burial, searched out by holy women and then reappear alive a few days later. 3) Similarly, the details of the crucifixion, burial and resurrection accounts are astonishingly similar to the events of several surviving popular novels from the same period in which two lovers are separated when

-Caveat Lector- -- Forwarded message -- Date: Sat, 10 Jul 1999 11:29:40 -0700 From: JC Huntington [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Fractures On Foster's Skull Inconsistent With Official Finding Copy of my recent post re: Foster autopsy to FR in text form below; FR thread here: http://www.freerepublic.com/forum/a3721081d6867.htm Fractures On Foster's Skull Inconsistent With Official Finding All official investigations into the Foster death have concluded that Foster died as a result of firing a single shot through his head. However, the drawings of the wounds to the skull found on page 5 of the Foster autopsy report show fracture lines indicating that there were two impacts to Foster's skull occurring at two different times. Dr. Beyer's drawing on page 5 of the Foster autopsy report shows two intersecting fracture lines. One is transverse to the skull, running anterior-left to posterior-right and the other runs from the cross-hatched area towards the transverse fracture line. The second fracture line terminates abruptly at the transverse fracture line. According to the University of Utah Internet Pathology Laboratory For Medical Education1, "subsequent fracture lines will not cross a pre-existing fracture line"2, indicating that the transverse fracture occurred before the fracture leading from the cross-hatched area. On November 17,1993, Dr. Randloph H. Robertson, M.D. a diagnostic radiologist, testified before the The Committee On Government Operations regarding his analysis the original radiographic and photographic record pertaining to president Kennedy's autopsy. Dr. Robertson told the committee that the fracture patterns on Kennedy's skull were necessarily caused by two separate impacts, based on "the fact that a secondary series of propagating fractures has to stop abruptly at their intersection with the gap created by a preexisting fracture" (see this page: http://home.cynet.net/jfk/rob.htm ): ... This pattern of intersecting skull fractures leaves no doubt that the damage to the President's skull is inconsistent with only one bullet entry and was necessarily caused by two separate impacts. ... The principle is simple and relies on the fact that a secondary series of propagating fractures has to stop abruptly at their intersection with the gap created by a preexisting primary fracture. This analysis of intersecting fracture lines is the first correct interpretation of the evidence which explains the discrepancy between the location of the wound of entry by the autopsy pathologists and subsequent review panels and allows the deduction of two separate bullet wounds to the President's head. I have included a diagram based upon the postmortem skull radiographs to illustrate this principle.. 1: University of Utah Internet Pathology Laboratory For Medical Education home page here: http://medstat.med.utah.edu/WebPath/webpath.html#MENU 2: See "Sequence Of Fire" on this page: http://medstat.med.utah.edu/WebPath/TUTORIAL/GUNS/GUNINJ.html = Kaddish, Kaddish, Kaddish, YHVH, TZEVAOT FROM THE DESK OF:[EMAIL PROTECTED] *Mike Spitzer* [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] The Best Way To Destroy Enemies Is To Change Them To Friends Shalom, A Salaam Aleikum, and to all, A Good Day. = DECLARATION DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion and informational exchange list. Re: [CTRL] THIS is Interesting: Forbes Billionaires List (fwd)
-Caveat Lector- The keyword here is "estimated." All wealth anonymously held in occult fashion -- including wealth held in numbered accounts by individuals, family trusts, secret societies, drug lords, gun and weapon dealers, slave traders, pornographers, etc. -- and their subsequent inheritors -- cannot be "estimated," and is therefore "off the books," and entirely omitted from Forbes' list. Does Forbes (or any other source) publish a listing of all "Swiss Banks," plus all the other exclusive tax havens, plus all secret investment combines, with a listing of -all- their "secret" numbered accounts, including the individual, or even the total, balances of said anonymous accounts within each of said establishments ? Should Forbes publish a disclaimer, admitting to this situation, perhaps including the question of -- at what point such occult wealth will exceed all other wealth combined -- thus effectively controlling the political economy of entire planet -- effectively reducing even (the poorer of) those they do list, to involuntary servitude to the invisible and perpetual plutocracy ? If the list compilers had combined the Walton/WalMart kids as 'family', the MicroSoft aristos would only be three out of the top five [not four] richest bastards in the world. And note that software wealth generally outstrips oil/national wealth. Are territorial states anachronisms in the modern world? By some accounts, Saddam Hussein is worth more than Queen E - but what good does it do him when he can't leave town? -Caveat Lector- - Original Message - From: day [EMAIL PROTECTED] Whatever consenting adults wish to do in the privacy of their bedroom is their own business, not mine, and definitely not that of the state. This is the most intelligent comment, and only one when I think about, that you have made yet. The problem is that homosexuality is being pushed on us as an alternative lifestyle and our children are being taught to 'embrace' homosexuals when they should be taught that homosexuality is a sin. The truth: 'Sin' is a theological matter, not political or biological or otherwise physical. As in: "It's YOUR god, they're YOUR commandments, YOU go burn in hell!" In reality, humans are sexual beings, and are immensely complex, so ANY simplistic statement one makes about human sexuality is bound to be wrong. Here's an item from my next bulletin: # SEX AND THE SINGLE FETUS. Want proof we are all sexual beings? Then read about the ultrasound two Italian researchers got of a 32-week female fetus masturbating in utero. Chimps bugger, butterflies whore, my doberman was a lesbian, fetuses jerk off, and none of this has much to do with conspiracies, except in the minds of those who think that any thoughts beyond their own are the product of a plot. From TheFreeRepublic ""Both Syria and Vietnam are scrambling to modernize their armed forces in order to be able to repel massive air raids similar to those carried out by NATO in Yugoslavia, according to an official at Rosvooruzhenie."" Countries Race for Russian Weapons Foreign Affairs News Keywords: NATO Source: The St. Petersburg Times ( Russia ) Must Read Published: July 9, 1999 Author: Simon Saradzhyan Posted on 07/10/1999 05:52:19 PDT by Jzoback Countries Race for Russian Weapons By Simon Saradzhyan STAFF WRITER MOSCOW - Motivated by NATO's bombing campaign in Yugoslavia to upgrade their national defense systems, developing nations are making a beeline for the Russian arms market. Judging from preliminary figures and visits this week by several top-ranking foreign officials from Vietnam, Syria and Iraq, this year should prove to be a promising one for Russian arms trade. The first of the delegations to arrive was from Vietnam, last week. Defense Minister Pham van Tra, who was in town for a three-day visit, met his Russian counterpart Igor Sergeyev and top officials from the country's two largest arms mediators - Rosvooruzhenie, Russia's chief arms exporter, and Promexport. He was followed by Syrian President Hafez Assad, who came Monday to try to revive military cooperation with Russia. Assad, like the Vietnamese delegation, declined to comment on the details of Syria's proposed purchase, but news agencies reported he is seeking to buy as much as $2 billion in weaponry, including Russia's new MIG-29 SMT jet fighter. Both Syria and Vietnam are scrambling to modernize their armed forces in order to be able to repel massive air raids similar to those carried out by NATO in Yugoslavia, according to an official at Rosvooruzhenie. Russian-made fighters and air defense systems are most in demand, and their price tags - lower than western equivalents - are attractive to developing nations. "There has been a lot of talk about how Yugoslavia could have defended itself if it had enough S-300 [air defense] systems," the official said in a recent phone interview. In addition to the MiG-29 fighters, Syria is also considering S-300 air defense systems. Damascus is also planning to buy spare parts for its aging fleet of Soviet-made fighters and armored vehicles. Soviet and Russian-made weaponry comprise 90 percent of Syria's arsenal. Assad was given a warm welcome in Moscow. Russian President Boris Yeltsin called him an "old friend" as top arms dealers stood by to take orders. The one potential snag in the deal is the question of Syria's $12 billion dollar debt to Russia, which dates back to Damascus' failure to pay for weapons purchased during the Soviet era. However, Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov indicated this week that Mos cow is ready to put its demands for the Soviet-era debt on hold. Indeed, Russia appears eager to take advantage of the current post-Yugoslavia momentum to increase its position as a global arms trader. Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin said as much this week, when he announced that Russia plans to boost its weapons exports in order to expand its global influence as well as to secure funds for its cash-strapped military. But while officials at Rosvooruzhenie may be counting their rubles, U.S. officials are warning Russia that any weapons exports to Syria could hinder U.S. aid to the Kremlin. The United States already slapped sanctions on three Russian arms manufacturers last April for selling arms to Syria - which is included in the U.S. State Department's annual list of nations that sponsor international terrorism. These sanctions have only angered Russia, which appears to be more than ready to cooperate with Syria. "We view these sanctions as an infringement on freedom of trade," said one Rosvooruzhenie official, adding that the agency will "cooperate" with Damascus unless the United Nations decides to impose sanctions. If the U.S. has objections to Syria, it is likely to frown even more on other potential arms deals - namely with Libya and Iraq, both of which are banned from purchasing weapons by a United Nations mandate. Vasily Pankov, director of the Sokol aircraft plant in Nizhny Novgorod, told Interfax this week that Russia is planning to sell Libya several MiG-31 fighter planes. Russia may also modernize the 90 MiG-25s that Libya currently owns, Pankov added. Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz was also in town this week seeking to break the UN-mandated ban on its weapons purchases. "It makes no sense to fulfill our obligations when the UN Security Council is not fulfilling its [obligations]. In particular, it doesn't protect Iraq's sovereignty," the Iraqi official told reporters. Russia's overall arms sales will grow this year to total some $3 billion, compared to $2.7 billion sold in 1998, according to Konstantin Makienko, deputy

[CTRL] No. Ireland: 07-10-99
-Caveat Lector- From TheNation July 26, 1999 Ulster Must Not Say No See below for background and related information. Northern Ireland's peace process faces its gravest crisis since George Mitchell negotiated the Good Friday accord--graver even than after last summer's bombing in Omagh by a small band of breakaway republicans. This time, it's not marginals but the mainstream of Protestant unionist leadership who have thrown the process into jeopardy, and with it the resolution of Europe's longest-running civil rights struggle and civil war. The Good Friday accords called for Northern Ireland self-government with Catholic-Protestant power-sharing. Disarmament by the IRA and Protestant loyalist paramilitaries was to move forward on an independent track. But unionist leader David Trimble, fending off militant unionist challenges to his leadership and abetted by dodgy language from British Prime Minister Tony Blair, began insisting that the IRA disarm before its Sinn Fein allies could take their elected seats. By the June 30 deadline for forming the new governing body, Trimble had painted himself into a corner. The real culprit is a unionist political vocabulary built since the turn of the century on the slogan "Ulster Says No." To the unionist siege mentality--of people who command a political majority and make up 93 percent of the police but whose power is eroding with Catholic population growth--every compromise by Gerry Adams and Sinn Fein is, in Trimble's words, a "con job." Yet by the end of June Sinn Fein had made an extraordinary commitment to "persuading those with arms to decommission them in accordance with the Agreement." And the IRA itself has sustained its cease-fire in the face of escalating attacks by loyalist paramilitaries, who have staged at least forty-five pipe-bombings against Catholics since January, as well as the bombing murders of civil rights lawyer Rosemary Nelson and Elizabeth O'Neill, a Protestant married to a Catholic. When the deadline passed, Blair and Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern went public with a dramatic proposal to begin disarmament shortly after the new government's inauguration on July 15. They hope that a silent majority of Protestants eager for settlement will lure unionist leaders from their rejectionist corner. The Clinton Administration is dangling carrots and raising sticks to preserve its one unalloyed foreign policy triumph, with the President himself lobbying Adams and Trimble. The best hope lies not with political brinkmanship at Stormont Castle but with shifts in both Catholic and Protestant public consciousness aided by meticulously balanced historical reckonings. In the run-up to June's negotiations, a British tribunal reopened an investigation into Bloody Sunday, the 1972 killing of fourteen Catholics by soldiers. A former Royal Ulster Constabulary informant was charged with the 1989 murder of civil rights lawyer Pat Finucane. Loyalist and republican paramilitary prisoners walked free. The IRA released information about those "disappeared" during the seventies. It's as if each historic grievance is an obstacle to be overcome so that negotiations can occur on the terrain of the present. If the new deal succeeds, the power-sharing executive it creates will not alone bring justice to Northern Ireland. As Bernadette Devlin McAliskey warns, it will not bring the united Ireland sought by republicans but an "agreed Ireland" with battles of equity and inclusion still to be fought. Nor will "decommissioning" guarantee peace; the decommissioning debate is about who's a terrorist and political legitimacy. The real guarantor is a distribution of power that all sides find equitable. That can happen only if David Trimble and the unionist community take a leap of faith and consign "Ulster Says No" to history. - --- Background and Related Information Irish News Round-Up RM_Distribution is an electronic news service carrying current Irish Republican news updates and local Northern Irish information and analysis. -Caveat Lector- From www.ahram.org/weekly/1998/1948/index.htm Beyond the introduction {given below} is a list of linked articles. 1948-1998 Picture: 50 Years David Ben-Gurion, one of the father founders of Israel, described Zionist aims in 1948 thus: "A Christian state should be established [in Lebanon], with its southern border on the Litani river. We will make an alliance with it. When we smash the Arab Legion's strength and bomb Amman, we will eliminate Transjordan too, and then Syria will fall. If Egypt still dares to fight on, we shall bomb Port Said, Alexandria and Cairo... And in this fashion, we will end the war and settle our forefathers' account with Egypt, Assyria, and Aram" *. 50 years after the Arab defeat in the1948 war, which resulted in the establishment of Israel, many of Ben-Gurion's stated aims can still be discerned in the language of Israeli and Zionist leaders. Some modifications have become apparent, in large part as a result of Arab resistance, but the biblical language in which Ben-Gurion chose to state his meaning starkly expresses the deeply-rooted nature of these violent fantasies of conquest and destruction. Resistance, in this instance through a better comprehension of the history of the struggle, as well as the writing of our own version of it, becomes more necessary than ever. Israel cannot be allowed to write the history of the past fifty years unchallenged. It is in this conviction that Al-Ahram Weekly presents the first in a regular series of articles designed to document the history and nature of Arab-Israeli struggle, as well as that of Palestinian dispossession and exile. [CTRL] FWD: The Nation- Benjamin Smith
-Caveat Lector- KATHA POLLITT Natural Born Killers It didn't take long for the press to connect 21-year-old white-supremacist multikiller Benjamin Smith with the all-purpose explanation du jour: violent entertainment, in this case the computer game Dungeons Dragons. This replaces the explanation, given by his mentor, Matt Hale, leader of the World Church of the Creator, that Smith was driven to shoot minorities in the Midwest over the July 4 weekend--six Orthodox Jews, at least three blacks, two Asians--because political correctness prevented him from expressing his racial theories verbally. It turns out Smith expressed himself verbally quite a bit: His views were widely known to his fellow students at Indiana University. And physically, too: He had been forced to withdraw from the University of Illinois after beating up a girlfriend in the dorm. As with the Littleton killers, there were plenty of warning signs. One neighbor from Wilmette, Illinois, where the Smith family lived during Benjamin's teen years, said she was afraid of him and was relieved when he moved away. Of course, even if Dungeons Dragons had totally warped Smith's mind, which I doubt, you can't kill many people driving around with a virtual sword. For that you need guns. In the wake of Littleton, it looked for a moment there as if Congress would be shamed into at least token gun-control legislation, but in the end John Dingell--a Democrat, for those of you who still like to blame the Republicans for all our woes--saved the nation from the dreadful prospect of having to wait for a background check before buying a personal arsenal from an unlicensed dealer at a gun show. The kind of serious, comprehensive legislation it would take to make a significant dent in the easy availability of firearms--a feature unique to the United States among Western industrialized nations--is decades, maybe lifetimes away. So forget gun control. Media violence is the trendy cause now. In the Washington Post, Michael Massing declares it's beyond question that the media are connected to real-world violence, although I find it hard to believe that the movies he singles out--LA Confidential and Pulp Fiction--had anything to do with the inner-city violence that he says shaped his views: crackheads throwing children off rooftops, teens killed in penny ante drug deals (besides, isn't rap music the usual suspect here?). Still, you won't find me defending art films loaded with stylized killing, hyperviolent action films, super-gory horror flicks, misogynous heavy metal and rap, violent computer games, slap-happy cartoons, sadomasochistic fashion spreads or sexist music videos. Whether or not you can connect this cultural effluvia to specific acts of violence in a one-to-one causal way, thousands of hours of it can't be good for the soul. But realistically, what does one do with that insight beyond curling up with a good book? The government is not about to censor pop culture, a huge commercial enterprise, any more than it's about to enact real checks on guns, another huge commercial enterprise. And there's another problem with fighting media violence. You wouldn't know this from the way the issue is presented by proponents of media uplift, but most Americans don't disapprove of the current media fare--they love it! The anti-slash-and-sleaze constituency is small and getting smaller. According to a recent Associated Press poll taken during the post-Littleton debate over media violence, only one-third of Americans said violence is the biggest problem with current movies. (The same number cited ticket prices.) And the 40 percent who said violence would make them less likely to see a film is down from the 60 percent who gave that answer a decade ago. Moreover, most of those in that 40 percent are women, old people and people who hardly ever go to the movies. It skews the issue to present the problem as one of "youth culture"--worried, disapproving parents falling asleep over Preston Sturges reruns while their crazy kids watch Natural Born Killers with one eye and update their racist Web site with the other. Much of America is deeply fascinated by violent entertainment. The whole family watches COPS and NYPD Blue and Homicide, and idolizes athletes, musicians and actors with records of brutality against women. Massing mentions Home Alone, which struck me too as containing rather a lot of supposedly humorous physical cruelty for a movie aimed at small children. But so what? Home Alone was the eleventh biggest-grossing movie ever. Or take wrestling. It's violent, racist, sexist and witless--Americans can't get enough of it, and now their kids can't either. Recently, a 7-year-old in Dallas killed his 3-year-old brother when he demonstrated a wrestling move he'd seen on TV--a pretty clear demonstration of a connection between media violence and the real thing--but how far do you think a campaign to confine televised wrestling to the post-bedtime hours would get?
[CTRL] Why the present monetary system cannot be reformed?
-Caveat Lector- Dr Shostak argues that the present monetary system cannot be fixed and that the root of the problem is the present fiat paper standard, which is fundamentally unstable. http://www.newaus.com.au/econ126frank.html The New Australian Why the present monetary system cannot be reformed? By *Frank Shostak No. 126, 5-11 July 1999 Against the background of the present world financial markets instability, most economic experts are of the view that radical reforms of the current monetary system are required. Economists however, are deeply divided about the nature of these reforms. In the one camp there are experts who regard speculative flows of money as the source of instability. It is therefore suggested to establish an institution which will exercise a control over these flows. The opposing camp argues that any intervention with the inter-country flow of money will stifle economic growth. Hence they advocate that the monetary system be kept free from intervention. It is however, overlooked by most experts that the present monetary system cannot be fixed. The root of the problem is the present fiat paper standard, which is fundamentally unstable. This raises several questions. How did this system originate? What causes people to accept pieces of paper in exchange for goods and services? Demand for a good arises from its perceived benefit. For instance people demand food because of the nourishment it offers them. With regard to money, people demand it not for direct use in consumption, but in order to exchange it for other goods and services. Money is not useful in itself, but because it has a prior exchange value, it is exchangeable in terms of other goods and services. Money is thus demanded because the benefit it offers is it's purchasing power i.e. its price. Most economic thinkers regard the acceptance or demand for money as a paradox. In other words I accept money because you accept it and vice versa. Following the view of Plato and Aristotle, economists regard money as an historical fact, that was introduced by government decree1. It is government decree, so it is argued, that makes a particular thing accepted as general medium of the exchange i.e. money. However, for something to be accepted as money, it must have a pre-existing purchasing power, a price. So how does a thing that the government proclaims will become the medium of the exchange, acquire purchasing power or a price? We know that the price of a good is the result of the inter-action between demand and supply. From this we could reach a conclusion that price of money is also set by the same law of demand-supply. Yet there is a problem with this way of thinking, since the demand for money arises because money has purchasing power i.e. money has a price. Yet if the demand for money depends on its pre-existing price or purchasing power, how can this price be explained by demand? In other words we are caught in a circular trap. The circularity seems to vindicate the view that the acceptance of money is a paradox and the result of the fact that government decree gave birth to it. In his writings Carl Menger raised doubts about the soundness of the view that the origin of money is government proclamation. According to Menger: "An event of such high and universal significance and of notoriety so inevitable, as the establishment by law or convention of a universal medium of exchange, would certainly have been retained in the memory of man, the more certainly inasmuch as it would have had to be performed in a great number of places. Yet no historical monument gives us trustworthy tidings of any transactions either conferring distinct recognition on media of exchange already in use, or referring to their adoption by peoples of comparatively recent culture, much less testifying to an initiation of the earliest ages of economic civilization in the use of money"2 Support to Menger's insight was provided by Ludwig von Mises's regression theorem. By means of this theorem Mises not only succeeded in solving the money circularity problem, but he also confirmed Carl Menger's view that money could not have originated as a result of government decree. Mises began his analysis by noting that today's demand for money is determined by yesterday's purchasing power of money. Consequently for a given supply of money, today's purchasing power of money is established. Yesterday's demand for money in turn was fixed by the prior day's purchasing power of money. For a given supply of money then, yesterday's price of money was set. The same procedure applies to past periods. However, this doesn't seem to solve the circularity problem, rather it appears to push it back to infinity. Not so, argues Mises. By regressing through time we will eventually arrive at a point in time when money was just an ordinary commodity. It's price therefore, was set by demand and supply for a commodity. Namely the commodity had an exchange value in terms of other
[CTRL] New Star Wars Movie
In the New Star Wars movie you are presented with Anikan Skywalker as a young boy. He was conceived by the "mediclorines a symbiant microscopic life-form within" without which "life could not exist". The mediclorines represent the "God" within. That all creation is God and should be worshipped according to New Ager beliefs and especially "Man" the only life form on Earth with intelligence. Anikan Skywalker was conceived by the medichlorians so therefore is a Christ figure being conceived by "God". These medichlorines are said to speak to us so in reality are demons. Benjamin Creme of the UN backed Share International who pushes Maitreya, says that Lucifer is our "God" and director of our planetary evolution. The theory of evolution opens the door to Nazi eugenics. Benjamin Creme also says that Lucifer is the Sacrificial lamb and the prodigal "Son". Anikan Skywalker Darth Vader fulfills this description given by New Ager and Freemason Benjamin Creme. At the last movie in the series Return of the Jedi, Darth Vader (Anikan Skywalker) repents and leaves the Dark Side of the force therefore becoming the Prodigal Son. He died therefore becoming the sacrificial lamb since he was conceived by the medichlorines he was therefore conceived by the "God" within. So what Benjamin Creme says below can be said about Darth Vader or Anikan Skywalker. In the new movie the Phantom Menace he literally walks across the sky when he pilots the fighter he becomes a Savior when he destroys the control ship. The literal Sun or Star walks across the sky when it rises in the East and Sets in the West. Anikan Skywalker AKA Darth Vader fits Benjemin Creme's description of Lucifer which means Shining One in the original Hebrew and represents Nimrod the Mighty Hunter and first ruler of the Original Babylon quite well. Lucifer is really Nimrod who reflected Satans attitude. But in New Age theology Lucifer is equivalent to Baal, Beelzebub or Satan. But they don t see him as Satan but the true God who freed man to decide for himself what is right and wrong and what has mans technology truly done to the Earth. It is destroying and polluting the Earth that is what. Gaia fits in as Mans mother and is part of the collective God they believe to exist in all creation. Darth Sideus in the movie I hate to say it according to the New Age writer represents Adony AKA Jehovah God, Yahweh, or YHVH the God of the Bible. Albert Pike leader of the Southern Jurisdiction of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry denounced the Hebrew word for Lord Jehovah Adony and embraced Lucifer or Satan. The same types of messages are playing out in the Star Wars movies. Below is an excerpt from http://www.webzonecom.com/ccn/cults/newageov.txt As to the history and achievements of Lucifer, Benjamin Creme, a leading lecturer and proponent of the New Age, gives us some fascinating information from a recent radio interview. The interviewer asked Mr. Creme, "Who is Lucifer?", to which Mr.Creme replied: "Lucifer came from the planet Venus 18.5 million years ago; he's the director of our planetary evolution, he is the sacrificial lamb, and the prodigal son. Lucifer made an incredible sacrifice, a supreme sacrifice for our planet." Benjamin Creme uses this same exact description to describe a being named Sanat Kumara. The only difference in the description is that in place of the name Lucifer, Sanat Kumara is used.Mr. Creme further adds that "Sanat Kumara is our God." Thus we have a clear picture of who Lucifer is according to some of those at the forefront of the New Age Movement. He is a mighty benevolent being of light, the Ruler of Humanity, our inner guiding light... the light of God, the sacrificial lamb, the prodigal son, and is also known as Sanat Kumara our God. Not at all - it's just that conspiracy theories [and religions] suffer from a basic paradox. If we assume that powerful conspiracies exist, then intellectual honesty demands that we admit that we may have been manipulated into thinking as we do about said conspiracies. Belief in conspiracies removes the possibility of certainty - if plotters COULD control your data, then it could ALL be lies. But we're drifting off-base here. The discussion was: did Jews deserve the Holocaust because they're mostly pro-Communist/secular? I asked for statistics to support such a claim, and I pointed out that strong right-wing Jewish groups did and do exist. But how do we count leftist and rightist Jews? Do we count all the Jews slaughtered by Nazis as left-wing, all those slaughtered by Stalinists as right-wing, or is that enumeration too absurd? Try this: in any population, there are minorities strongly polarized on political/social/religious/economic issues, and majorities who don't give a good rat's ass. I suggesting reading history, to your disdain, because I was too lazy to expound on my point that people from a wide variety of ethnic and religious backgrounds support left- and right-wing movements. Well, here goes. Catholicism encompasses both the staunchly conservative/ reactionary Vatican power structure, and tending-to-Marxism Liberation Theology activists. Protestantism has left- and right-wing factions - read the output of theologians from various seminaries - as does Islam, Hinduism, almost any religious group. And 'races' don't clump into any ideological camps - look at any ethnic group, and you'll find a wide range of doctrines. Jews range all over the map: Marxists, JDL, pro- and anti-Zionists, peasant farmers with no political inclinations, the whole schmeer. Ditto for Chinese, Native Americans, everybody.
