Iraq Invasion: The Road to Folly
Ignorant of Iraq, void of strategic vision, and viewing the Mideast through the
neoconservative prism, Bush steers America toward a quagmire.

Maj. Gen. J.F.C. Fuller, Britains leading military thinker of the 20th century, wrote 
that the
object of war is not victory, but peace. A war that fails to achieve clear political 
objectives is
merely an exercise in violence and futility.

In its headlong rush to invade Iraq, the Bush administration is violating Fullers 
simple yet
immensely important strategic dictum. Britains Prime Minister Anthony Eden committed 
the
same grave error in 1956 when he launched an ill-conceived invasion of Egypt which, 
like
modern Iraq, had the audacity to defy a great power. The Suez operation was a military
success that turned into a political fiasco.

The Bush administration is clearly obsessed with Iraq, but it has no clear plan on 
what to do
with this Mideast version of ex-Yugoslavia once Americas military might overthrows
Saddam Husseins regime. Nor is there understanding of how invasion and occupation will
affect the Fertile Crescent, Americas client Arab regimes, Turkey, indeed, the entire
Mideast.

There is also the dearth of reliable political information on Iraq from human sources 
that
has long plagued U.S. Mideast policy. Much of the Bush administrations current view 
of the
region has been fashioned by neoconservatives, who hold key policymaking positions in
White House, Pentagon, and vice presidents office. Equally significant, the 
administrations
non-electronic human intelligence on the Mideast and terrorism relies heavily on self-
serving data supplied by foreign intelligence services and Iraqi exile groups.

The ideologues and Pentagon hawks driving administration policy recall the Roman 
senator
Cato, who ended every oration with, Carthage must be destroyed! Few of these armchair
warriors have even been to Iraq; less have ever served in U.S. armed forces, yet all 
are
eager to send American soldiers to fight a potentially bloody war whose benefits to the
United States are doubtful.

Lust for destruction is not policy, no matter how much Pentagon hawks and 
neoconservative
media trumpets may yearn to plow salt into the fields of Iraq. Nor is the piratical 
proposal
that the U.S. liberate Iraq and plunder its great oil reserves to bring 
civilization and
democracy to that benighted nation.

If Washington were truly concerned about democracy and human rights in the Arab World,
it could long ago have promoted democracy in the military dictatorships and feudal
sheikdoms over which the U.S. exercises paramount influence: Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt,
Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the Gulf emirates. Instead, under the banner of a war on
terrorism, the U.S. has been buttressing autocracy and despotism, most recently in 
Central
Asia and Pakistan.

The first question, of course, is why should the U.S. attack and invade Iraq, a nation 
that
has not committed any act of war against America? The rest of the world will rightly 
see
such an act as naked aggression, a return to British and Soviet-style imperialism, and 
a
personal vendetta by George Bush against Saddam Hussein.

According to President Bush, Iraq must be destroyed because Saddam Hussein might
possess some hidden chemical or biological weapons (WMDs), or because Iraq might one
day develop nuclear weapons, or might slip WMDs to anti-American terrorists, or simply
because he is evil. The Bush administrations insistence on the right to preemptively
intervene anywhere on earth recalls the old Brezhnev Doctrine of Soviet days.

Why Iraq alone is a danger among the 18 nations that possess weapons of mass
destruction  including India whose new ICBMs will be able to deliver nuclear weapons 
to
the U.S.  remains a mystery. Why Saddams ravaged, hermetically bottled up Iraq would
be more of a danger to the US than 1.5 billion Muslims enraged by Americas perceived
persecution of Iraqis, Afghans, and Palestinians also remains unclear. Terrorists 
dont need
Iraq to concoct germ weapons, as Japans Aum Shinrikyo showed, and Saddam Hussein is
too intelligent to invite nuclear attack by the United States or Israel by slipping 
germ
weapons to terrorists. If Saddam had wanted to do so, he had ample opportunity from
1991-2001.

Equally unclear is why the U.S. refuses to seek diplomatic accommodation with Iraq 
rather
than war. Saddam Hussein has repeatedly shown himself a wily survivor willing to deal 
with
the devil, when necessary. The United States was a close ally, financial backer, and
provider of arms and intelligence to Saddam in the 1980s. He is certainly not eager to 
face
an American invasion that would bring his own demise, and would therefore welcome a
diplomatic escape from the dire fate he faces.

Notes from the Typist

The Wizard of Oz: A Parable on Populism has ended up being a wonderful article with an
influential effect on my life. My high-school History teacher (Dan Christner) taught 
this to us
in High Schoolas a side benefit, we got to watch The Wizard of Oz in our History 
class. ;)
It started me on a journey re-reading books looking at them for more then just their 
literal
meaning. I lost track of this amazing History teacher, who managed to make History a
interesting and entertaining subject, when he lost tenure at my old High School. (They
should be shot for letting an inspiring instructor like him go.) Anyhow, I remember
everything about that week we spent on this. This is the essay that he handed out to 
us.

It's been five years since I originally put up this article. I recently found out that 
Henry M.
Littlefield, the author, passed away last year. From the Emails I have gotten from his
widow, former students and colleagues, I feel the world has lost a very great and very
gifted teacher. I'm saddened that I never got to meet him. If you knew him and have any
words you'd like to add in memorial, let me know and I will link a memorial page to 
this one

The Wizard of Oz: Parable on Populism

On the deserts of North Africa in 1941 two tough Australian brigades went into battle
singing:

Have you heard of the wonderful wizard,
 The wonderful Wizard of Oz,
And he is a wonderful wizard,
  If ever a wizard there was.


It was a song they had brought with them from Australia and would soon spread to
England. Forever afterward it reminded Winston Churchill of those buoyant days.[1]
Churchill's nostalgia is only one symptom of the world-wide delight found in an 
American
fairy tale about a little girl and her odyssey in the strange land of Oz. The song he 
reflects
upon came from a classic 1939 Hollywood production of the story, which introduced 
millions
of people not only to the land of Oz, but to a talented young lady named Judy Garland 
as
well.

Ever since its publication in 1900 Lyman Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has
been immensely popular, providing the basis for a profitable musical comedy, three 
movies,
and a number of plays. It is an indigenous creation, curiously warm and touching, 
although
no one really knows why. For despite wholehearted acceptance by generations of readers,
Baum's tale has been accorded neither critical acclaim, nor extended critical 
examination.
Interested scholars, such as Russel B. Nye and Martin Gardiner, look upon The Wizard 
of Oz
as the first in a long and delightful series of Oz stories, and understandably base 
their
appreciation of Baum's talent on the totality of his works[2].

The Wizard of Oz is an entity unto itself, however, and was not originally written 
with a
sequel in mind. Baum informed his readers in 1904 that he has produced The Marvelous
Land of Oz reluctantly and only in answer to well over a thousand letters demanding 
that he
creation another Oz tale[3]. His original effort remains unique and to some degree 
separate
from the books which follow. But its uniqueness does not rest alone on its peculiar and
transcendent popularity.

Professor Nye finds a strain of moralism in the Oz books, as well as a 
well-developed
sense of satire, and Baum stories often include searching parodies on the 
contradiction in
human nature. The second book in the series, The Marvelous Land of Oz, is a blatant 
satire
on feminism and the suffragette movement[4]. In it Baum attempted to duplicate the 
format
used so successfully in The Wizard, yet no one has noted a similar play on contemporary
movements in the latter work. Nevertheless, one does exist, and it reflects to an 
astonishing
degree the world of political reality which surrounded Baum in 1900. In order to 
understand
the relationship of The Wizard to turn-of-the-century America, it is necessary first 
to know
something of Baum's background.

Born near Syracuse in 1856, Baum was brought up in a wealthy home and early became
interested in the theater. He wrote some plays which enjoyed brief success and then, 
with
his wife and two sons, journeyed to Aberdeen, South Dakota, in 1887. Aberdeen was a 
little
prairie town and there Baum edited the local weekly until it failed in 1891[5].

For many years Western farmers had been in a state of loud, though unsuccessful, 
revolt.
While Baum was living in South Dakota not only was the frontier a thing of the past, 
but the
Romantic view of benign nature had disappeared we well.

Restricting firearms has helped make England more crime- ridden than the U.S.

On a June evening two years ago, Dan Rather made many
stiff British upper lips quiver by reporting that England had a crime problem and 
that, apart
from murder, theirs is worse than ours. The response was swift and sharp. Have a 
Nice
Daydream, The Mirror, a London daily, shot back, reporting: Britain reacted with 
fury and
disbelief last night to claims by American newsmen that crime and violence are worse 
here
than in the US. But sandwiched between the articles battery of official denials -- 
totally
misleading, a huge over- simplification, astounding and outrageous -- and a
compilation of lurid crimes from the wild west culture on the other side of the 
Atlantic
where every other car is carrying a gun, The Mirror conceded that the CBS anchorman
was correct. Except for murder and rape, it admitted, Britain has overtaken the US 
for all
major crimes.

In the two years since Dan Rather was so roundly rebuked, violence in England has 
gotten
markedly worse. Over the course of a few days in the summer of 2001, gun-toting men
burst into an English court and freed two defendants; a shooting outside a London 
nightclub
left five women and three men wounded; and two men were machine-gunned to death in a
residential neighborhood of north London. And on New Years Day this year a 19-year-old
girl walking on a main street in east London was shot in the head by a thief who wanted
her mobile phone. London police are now looking to New York City police for advice.

None of this was supposed to happen in the country whose stringent gun laws and 1997
ban on handguns have been hailed as the gold standard of gun control. For the better
part of a century, British governments have pursued a strategy for domestic safety 
that a
1992 Economist article characterized as requiring a restraint on personal liberty that
seems, in most civilised countries, essential to the happiness of others, a policy the
magazine found at odds with Americas Vigilante Values. The safety of English people 
has
been staked on the thesis that fewer private guns means less crime. The government
believes that any weapons in the hands of men and women, however law-abiding, pose a
danger, and that disarming them lessens the chance that criminals will get or use 
weapons.

The results -- the toughest firearm restrictions of any democracy -- are credited by 
the
worlds gun control advocates with producing a low rate of violent crime. U.S. Supreme
Court Justice Lewis Powell reflected this conventional wisdom when, in a 1988 speech to
the American Bar Association, he attributed Englands low rates of violent crime to 
the fact
that private ownership of guns is strictly controlled.

In reality, the English approach has not re-duced violent crime. Instead it has left 
law-
abiding citizens at the mercy of criminals who are confident that their victims have 
neither
the means nor the legal right to resist them. Imitating this model would be a public 
safety
disaster for the United States.

The illusion that the English government had protected its citizens by disarming them
seemed credible because few realized the country had an astonishingly low level of 
armed
crime even before guns were restricted. A government study for the years 1890-92, for
example, found only three handgun homicides, an average of one a year, in a population 
of
30 million. In 1904 there were only four armed robberies in London, then the largest 
city in
the world. A hundred years and many gun laws later, the BBC reported that Englands
firearms restrictions seem to have had little impact in the criminal underworld. 
Guns are
virtually outlawed, and, as the old slogan predicted, only outlaws have guns. Worse, 
they
are increasingly ready to use them.

Nearly five centuries of growing civility ended in 1954. Violent crime has been 
climbing ever
since. Last December, Londons Evening Standard reported that armed crime, with banned
handguns the weapon of choice, was rocketing. In the two years following the 1997
handgun ban, the use of handguns in crime rose by 40 percent, and the upward trend has
continued. From April to November 2001, the number of people robbed at gunpoint in
London rose 53 percent.

Gun crime is just part of an increasingly lawless environment. From 1991 to 1995, 
crimes
against the person in Englands inner cities increased 91 percent. And in the four 
years
from 1997 to 2001, the rate of violent crime more than doubled. Your chances of being
mugged in London are now six times greater than in New York. Englands rates of 
assault,
robbery, and burglary are far higher than Americas, and 53 percent of English 
burglaries
occur while occupants are at home, compared with 13 percent in the U.S., where burglars
admit to fearing armed homeowners more than the

The Populist Movement emerged from the farmersí alliances of the 1870s and 1880s. In 
the
1890s the Populist Party appeared to represent a viable third party independent of the
Democrats and Republicans.  A response to the growth of industrialism, the Populists
opposed the concentrated capital of banks and big businesses and decried the many of
the effects that industrialism was having on American society. As you read, look

The national power to create money is appropriated to enrich bond-holders

Silver, which has been accepted as coin since the dawn of history, has been 
demonitized to
add to the purchasing power of gold the supply of currency is purposely [limited] 
to
fatten [creditors] A vast conspiracy against mankind has been organized... if not 
met and
overthrown at once it forebodes terrible social convulsions, the destruction of 
civilization

Controlling influences dominating both... parties have permitted the existing dreadful
conditions to develop without serious effort to prevent or restrain them. Neither do 
they
now promise any substantial reform They propose to sacrifice our homes, lives, and
children on the alter of mammon; to destroy the multitude in order to secure corruption
funds from the millionaires

We seek to restore the government of the Republic to the hands of the plain people.

Our country finds itself confronted by conditions for which there is no precedence in 
the
history of the world; our annual agricultural productions amount to billions of 
dollars in
value, which must, within a few weeks or months, be exchanged for billions of dollars
worth of commodities consumed in their production; the existing currency supply is 
wholly
inadequate to make this exchange; the results are falling prices, the formation of 
combines
and rings, the impoverishment of the producing class. We pledge ourselves that if given
power we will labor to correct these evils

Its not hard to find pieces of the puzzle that just dont fit. Thats why the dark 
force spent years obliterating Americans critical capability. So that the pieces that 
just dont fit - dont even get noticed.

Here's a piece that doesn't fit.

They expect us to believe that the same Islamic Terrorists who supposedly masterminded 
the Sept. 11th attacks, (Arguably the most significant MILITARY strikes in the history 
of empires, shaking the very roots of the globes preeminent empire.) would blunder 
and bomb the disco containing Australians when a disco full of juicy Americans was 
just a few doors down the road?

One only has to spend an afternoon on the strip to find out which places are popular 
with the Americans. Even Islamic terrorists can ask any Kuta vagrant which club has 
the Americans in it.

And absolutely , positively, if Islamic terrorists were behind this attack, they would 
have gone straight to the discos frequented by Americans only several doors down the 
street, and bombed them - Absolutely - Positvely.

Grappling With the Dangers of the New World Order

The best-known foreign affairs columnist since Walter
Lippmann, Thomas L. Friedman of The New York Times has
produced in Longitudes and Attitudes: Exploring the World
After Sept. 11 the kind of book that only famous
columnists can publish: a collection of old columns and
diary entries (that read more like columns than diary
entries). Moreover, Mr. Friedman's prose style - an
occasionally flat Midwestern demotic punctuated by gee-whiz
exclamations about just how doggone irresistible
globalization is - lacks the steely elegance of a Lippmann,
the unobtrusive serviceability of a Scotty Reston or the
restless fireworks of a Maureen Dowd and is best taken in
small doses.

What saves this book and makes it eminently worth reading
is Mr. Friedman's sure grasp of so many of the main issues
facing the United States in the wars with terror and Iraq.
By no means an apologist for the Bush administration, Mr.
Friedman nevertheless returns his readers over and over to
a few simple truths that shape the choices facing the
United States today. A deadly anti-American hatred, partly
the result of blowback from the nation's own mistakes but
more largely the product of homegrown Middle Eastern
failures, has grown up in the Arab world to become a menace
to the lives and safety of ordinary Americans. With
moderate Arabs there can be conciliation and friendship;
with our hard-core enemies there is only victory or defeat.


Israel under Ehud Barak offered the Palestinians a 90
percent solution; the Palestinian response was intifada.
Mr. Barak's proposals may not have been enough, but no
serious Palestinian leader interested in peace would have
refused to make a counteroffer. Israel's current war
posture is the direct result of Yasir Arafat's failure.

Methodically and convincingly, Mr. Friedman takes on the
myths of the peace lobby. No, the United States cannot wait
to deal with Saddam Hussein until there is a solution to
the Israeli-Palestinian dispute. No, responding to Al Qaeda
violence by concessions and a lower regional profile will
not bring a spirit of reason and moderation to its
counsels. Yes, the Bush administration is right to confront
Mr. Hussein with a credible threat of war (though Mr.
Friedman hopes that Mr. Hussein will ultimately accept
intrusive inspections without war). No, despite some
legitimate Palestinian grievances, there is no moral
equivalence between the democratically elected Israeli
government and the corrupt, autocratic and dysfunctional
leadership of the Palestine Liberation Organization.

Yes, although the settler lobby's policies are profoundly
destructive for Israelis and Palestinians alike, the root
problem today is the incoherent intransigence of the
Palestinian leadership rather than Israeli expansionism.
Yes, although not all criticism of Israel is anti-Semitic,
a great deal of the one-sided, disproportionate and
unbalanced Israel bashing in the Arab world, Europe and
American academia is, alas, at least partly fueled by an
irrational hostility toward Jews.

Mr. Friedman is right about these critical matters and many
others at a time when clarity and common sense are badly
needed. More than the reporting - often brilliant - and
more than the access to insiders, it is this ability to see
a few big truths steadily and whole that makes him the most
important columnist in America today.

Perhaps the highlight of this book is Mr. Friedman's diary
account of his travels in Saudi Arabia in an effort to
understand why so many of the Sept. 11 hijackers came from
that kingdom. His encounters with Saudis at all levels of
society bring all his strengths into play and yield insight
after insight into the dilemmas America faces in the Middle
East.

Sept. 11 and its aftermath have clearly darkened Mr.
Friedman's view of the world. No longer so confident that
irresistible globalization is bringing peace and security,
he closes the book worrying that the choice that faces
Americans is a war within civilizations - between, for
example, liberal and fundamentalist Muslims - or an era of
war between civilizations. He may well be right and, if so,
top-notch columnists like Mr. Friedman are needed more than
ever to understand the emerging conflicts and dangers that
will help define this new and unsettling stage of world
history.

Absolutely not. In Indonesia - a Islamic country, the closest western power
corrupting their nation is Australia. What's more, Bali is one of the very
few non-Islamic islands in the archipelago. All this western money and
influence and corruption are pouring into Bali - making infidels rich, and
polluting Muslim minds.


Anyone who has spent time in the third world knows that to most of the
local inhabitants the distinctions between various European individuals is a
line too fine for most locals to worry about.

This is really a distorted sort of American Jingoism - We are the only ones

Omar Al-Faruq Recruited by The CIA

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Former State Intelligence Coordinating Board
(BAKIN) chief A.C. Manulang has said that Kuwaitd citizen Omar Al-Faruq, a
terrorist suspect who was arrested in Bogor, West Java, on June 5, 2002 and
handed over to the US three days later, is a CIA-recruited agent.
Al Faruq was assigned to infiltrate Islamic radical groups and recruit local
agents within these groups.
When Al Faruq finished his assignments, the CIA created a scenario that he
had been arrested, Manulang told Tempo News Room in Jakarta on Thursday
afternoon (19/9).
Manulang made this analysis based on the pattern used by Al Faruq, that of
having Kuwait citizenship but holding a Pakistani passport, entering
Indonesia as a refugee and marrying an Indonesian woman.
This kind of operation is aimed at starting conflicts in Indonesia and
creating the image that Indonesia is a land of terrorists.
After the CIA obtained complete data on this matter, they then made Al-Faruq
disappear. Its common in intelligence world, said Manulang.
Manulang said he considered several matters in the arrest of Al Faruq last
July to be odd, such as the denial of National Police chief Gen. Dai
Bachtiar over the polices involvement in Al Faruqs arrest, and the lack of
official documents in Al Faruqs handing over to the US.
In the handing over of a detainee to other country, there should be an
announcement or deportation document. Al Faruqs case indicated a lack of
coordination between the Indonesian police and intelligence agencies, said
Manulang.
As for Al Faruqs testimony in Time magazine that he had masterminded the
plan to murder Indonesian President Megawati and several bombings in
Indonesia, Manulang considered this as an attempt to making Islamic groups
the scapegoats for all terrorism incidents.
Anti-Islam intelligence agencies committed the bombings in Indonesia. They
have been trained for this and they are very organized, said Manulang.
Therefore, he added, it was useless to arrest the bombers.
We must arrest the mastermind of the bombings in Indonesia, stated
Manulang.
According to Manulang, its possible that Al Faruq recruited radical people
from Islamic groups for his plan.
In regards to the murder attempt on Megawati, Manulang did not consider this
as a serious matter.
Megawati does not need to be worried. Shes not the real target in this
matter, said Manulang.
Manulang requested the government immediately verify the CIA report on Al
Faruq.
Such a report could only be a dummy or false intelligence information that

JP Morgan market value
dwarfed by smaller rivals'

NEW YORK, Oct. 21 (Reuters) -- J.P. Morgan
Chase  Co. Inc. is one of the biggest banks
in the United States, but you wouldn't
necessarily know that by its stock market
value.

Shares of J.P. Morgan Chase, which ranks only
behind Citigroup Inc. by assets, have fallen
so much as the bank wrestles with loan and
trading losses that J.P. Morgan now is worth
about $5 billion less than smaller rival Bank
One Corp. in terms of market capitalization.

The weakness in J.P. Morgan Chase's stock and
drop in its market price tag have helped fuel
rumors once unthinkable -- that Chicago-based
Bank One, No. 6 in terms of assets, might buy
J.P. Morgan Chase instead of the reverse.

It's shocking, Fred Cummings, an analyst at
McDonald Investments, said of the disparity
between the banks' market capitalizations.
But that just shows you the market has lost
confidence in (J.P. Morgan's) management team
and they don't know how true that book value
is at J.P. Morgan.

Meanwhile, Bank One has prospered, though
analysts do not think it is strong enough to
digest a bank of J.P. Morgan's size. Under
the steadying hand of Chief Executive Jamie
Dimon, Bank One recovered from customer
service woes at its First USA credit card arm
and just posted a 9 percent rise in third
quarter profits to $823 million, or 70 cents
a share. Higher credit card balances, deposit
growth and cost controls helped.

Jamie's perceived as a good turnaround
player, Cummings said, though he noted Bank
One's price-to-earnings ratio of about 12
times earnings was about in line with others.
Bank One has gone through a major
turnaround. They don't have these same
balance sheet issues at this point in the
cycle.

J.P. Morgan Chase's market worth now is about
$40 billion, compared with Bank One's roughly
$45 billion capitalization. J.P. Morgan
Chase's value also lags Wachovia Corp.'s at a
bout $48 billion; Wells Fargo  Co. at about
$86 billion; and Bank of America Corp. at
$105 billion.

It's been there for a while -- a few
months, UBS Warburg analyst Diane Glossman
said of J.P. Morgan Chase's market
capitalization. But it is pretty astonishing
on the face of it if you just dial the clock
back a year ago.

When Chase Manhattan bought J.P. Morgan at
the end of December 2000, the deal was
heralded as the creation of a financial
services powerhouse rivaling Citigroup. But
since then J.P. Morgan Chase has seen its
profits slump in the market downturn because
of investment losses, bad loans to
telecommunications and cable companies, and
misplaced trading bets.

Part of the blame goes to moribund capital
markets in a flagging U.S. economy, analysts
said.

Most of J.P. Morgan's problems are just the
bad market environment, Reilly Tierney, an
analyst at Fox-Pitt, Kelton said. Even if
you brought in (former U.S. Treasury
Secretary) Bob Rubin and (Citigroup CEO)
Sandy Weill to be co-CEOs of J.P. Morgan,
they're not going to turn around the capital
markets.

Still, J.P. Morgan's stock tumbled 48 percent
in the first three quarters this year,
underperforming the Standard  Poor's
financial stock index, which fell about 22
percent then.

The bank's profits sank 91 percent in the
third quarter to $40 million, or a penny a
share, and it said it would cut about 2,200
investment banking jobs. J.P. Morgan already
let Wall Street down last month when it
warned third-quarter results would be well
below second-quarter levels.

The bank also has faced fire for off-balance
sheet transactions it set up for bankrupt
energy trader Enron Corp., further damaging
its stock

Venezuela energy post goes to
brother of "Carlos the Jackal"

CARACAS, Venezuela, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Venezuela has appointed the brother of leftist revolutionary Carlos the Jackal, who led a hostage-taking attack against an OPEC meeting in 1975, to a senior post in the South American OPEC nation's energy ministry, a ministry spokeswoman said Friday.

Electrical engineer Lenin Ramirez Sanchez was made the ministry's new Director of Energy, a spokeswoman for the ministry told Reuters.

Ramirez's brother Illich Ramirez Sanchez, nicknamed Carlos the Jackal, gained notoriety in 1975 when he led a hostage-taking attack against an OPEC meeting. He and five co-conspirators took about 70 people hostage, including 11 oil ministers, during the meeting in Vienna.

Venezuelan-born Carlos, considered by many to be the archetypal international terrorist, is currently serving a life sentence in France for the murder of two French secret agents and is suspected of taking part in 80 killings in support of the Palestinian cause.

Foreign diplomats played down the significance of the appointment and said Ramirez should not be judged by the actions of his brother.

"You can't really judge someone by their family," one diplomat said.

The attitude shown by Venezuela's left-wing President Hugo Chavez towards Carlos has stirred controversy.

During a visit to Paris in October, Chavez set off a verbal firestorm when he said his government had an obligation to guarantee respect for the revolutionary's human rights.

Chavez had previously raised eyebrows by sending a letter to Carlos calling him "dear compatriot."

The Venezuelan leader also irritated Washington by criticizing the U.S. anti-terrorism war in Afghanistan following the Sept. 11 suicide attacks that killed more than 3,000 people in New York and Washington.

Hearsay Allowed in Conspiracy Cases

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Two key exceptions to general criminal law may allow prosecutors to use even weak evidence to build a case against a dozen suspected terrorists charged in Oregon and New York, legal scholars say.

Unlike most crimes, proof of conspiracy does not require an actual crime and hearsay is allowed.

``In the legal world, conspiracy is called the 'darling' of prosecutors,'' said Robert Precht, a University of Michigan law professor and a defense attorney in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

``It's the closest American law comes to a 'thought crime' because the paradox of conspiracy law is there need not be any crime at all,'' he said.

Instead, all that is needed is evidence that two or more people agreed to commit a crime and took at least one step called an ``overt act'' - however trivial and even perfectly legal - toward planning that crime or carrying it out.

``There have to be overt acts in pursuance of the conspiracy but those overt acts can be perfectly innocuous things, like getting on a plane at JFK, so you don't need a lot,'' said Abraham Sofaer, a Stanford law professor, senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and former legal adviser to the U.S. State Department.

Also, the nearly ironclad legal principle that bars hearsay - testimony by one person who was merely told what another person said - does not apply to coconspirators, said Phil Heymann, a Harvard law professor.

``Any statement by any conspirator is treated as a statement by all of them and is an exception to hearsay,'' said Heymann, a former deputy U.S. attorney general.

The six people indicted earlier this month in a terrorism investigation in Oregon faces charges of conspiracy to levy war against the United States, conspiracy to provide support to al-Qaida, and conspiracy to contribute services to al-Qaida and the Taliban.

In New York, the five suspects arrested last month in the steel town of Lackawanna and a sixth arrested in Bahrain - all U.S. citizens of Yemeni descent - are awaiting indictment under the same conspiracy law, according to the FBI.

Attorney General John Ashcroft called the Oregon arrests ``a defining day in America's war against terrorism,'' claiming the government has ``neutralized a suspected terrorist cell within our borders.''

But Heymann argued that facts disclosed so far show a group of disenfranchised young people, mostly black Americans who have converted to Islam. Some in the group went target shooting at a gravel pit in Washington state, then tried to go to Afghanistan but failed to get into the country, and exchanged some e-mail about their travels and some cash.

``They look like very small potatoes, like full-time losers,'' Heymann said. ``That doesn't mean that losers can't do damage, but to claim this is a defining moment?''

An attorney for one of the Oregon suspects says the government has no case. Defense lawyers say the men arrested in New York days after the Sept. 11 anniversary are victims of misinformation who pose no danger.

The New York case may have more serious implications because all six are accused of training at a terrorist camp in Afghanistan, said Todd Gaziano, director of the Heritage Foundation center for legal and judicial studies in Washington.

Even though all the suspects may have traveled legally and committed no actual crimes or violence along the way, the group mentality is considered the greatest threat under conspiracy law, Gaziano said.

The mood among business lobbyists, according to a jubilant official at the Heritage Foundation, is one of optimism, bordering on giddiness. They expect the elections on Nov. 5 to put Republicans in control of all three branches of government, and have their wish lists ready. It's the domestic equivalent of planning for postwar Iraq, says the official.

The White House also apparently expects Christmas in November. In fact, it is so confident that it has already given business lobbyists the gift they want most: an end to all this nonsense about corporate reform. Back in July George W. Bush declared, Corporate misdeeds will be found and will be punished, touting a new law that authorizes new funding for investigators and technology at the Securities and Exchange Commission to uncover wrongdoing. But that was then; don't you know there's a war on?

The first big step in undermining reform came when Harvey Pitt, chairman of the S.E.C., backtracked on plans to appoint a strong and independent figure to head a new accounting oversight board.

But that was only a prelude. The S.E.C. has been underfunded for years, and most observers including Richard Breeden, who headed the agency when Mr. Bush's father was president thought that even the budget Mr. Bush signed back in July was seriously inadequate. But now the administration wants to cancel most of the new funding Mr. Bush boasted about.

Administration officials claim that the S.E.C. can still do its job with a much smaller budget. But the S.E.C. is ludicrously underfinanced: staff lawyers and accountants are paid half what they could get in the private sector, usually find themselves heavily outnumbered by the legal departments of the companies they investigate, and often must do their own typing and copying. Officials say there are investigations that they should pursue but can't for lack of resources. And the new law expands the S.E.C.'s responsibilities.

So what's going on? Here's a parallel. Since 1995 Congress has systematically forced the Internal Revenue Service to shrink its operations; the number of auditors has fallen by 28 percent. Yet it's clear that giving the I.R.S. more money would actually reduce the federal budget deficit; the agency estimates that it loses at least $30 billion a year in uncollected taxes, mainly because high-income taxpayers believe they can get away with tax evasion. So starving the I.R.S. isn't about saving money, it's about protecting affluent tax cheats.

Similarly, top officials don't really believe that the S.E.C. can do its job with less money; the whole point is to prevent the agency from doing its job.

In retrospect, it's hard to see why anyone believed that our current leadership was serious about corporate reform. To an extent unprecedented in recent history, this is a government of, by and for corporate insiders. I'm not just talking about influence, I'm talking about personal career experience. The Bush administration contains more former C.E.O.'s than any previous administration, but as James Surowiecki put it in The New Yorker, Almost none of the C.E.O.'s on the Bush team headed competitive, entrepreneurial businesses. Instead they come out of a world of crony capitalism, in which whom you know is more important than what you do and how you do it. Why would they turn their backs on that world?

And don't forget the personal incentives. Almost all of those ex-C.E.O.'s in the administration became wealthy thanks to the connections they had acquired in Washington; the exception is Mr. Bush himself, who became wealthy thanks to the connections his father had acquired in Washington. This process continues. Senator Phil Gramm, who pushed through legislation that exempted Enron's trading practices from regulation while his wife sat on the company's board, is retiring and taking a new job: he's going to UBS Warburg, the company that bought Enron's trading operation. Somehow, crusaders against business abuse don't get similar offers.

The bottom line is that you shouldn't worry about those TV images of men in suits doing the perp walk. That was for public consumption; now that the public is focused on other things, it's back to business insider business as usual.

The airfield where Mohamed Atta and his terrorist cadre learned to fly
has a long history of being used as a training base for paramilitary
operations by federal authorities, the MadCowMorningNews has learned
exclusively.
The Venice airport, now notorious for two Dutch-owned flight schools
which trained three of the four terrorist pilots in the Sept. 11 attack,
has been utilized in covert U.S. operations since the earliest days of
the Cold War, according to a top local law enforcement official.
Venice was even targeted by the Soviet Union in the event of nuclear
war, because of the military nature of certain activities taking place
at the airport, the official said.
During the Vietnam War pilots were trained in Venice for the
paramilitary operations of CIA-proprietary Air America, stated the
official. So too were bush pilots, a decade-and-a-half later, during the
conflicts in Central and South America during the Iran-Contra era.
The federal activity continues to this day.
It's not unusual to see a military Blackhawk helicopter touch down at
the Venice airport in the middle of the night, stated the official, who
requested anonymity, and then take off again 30 seconds later, after
dropping off its cargo or passengers.
Or you look up and all of a sudden there's 5,000 soldiers from the
101st Airborne landing and taking off. Strange things have been going on
out there for a long time.
What they're hiding down in Venice, Florida, is that Mohamed Atta came
to be there at the behest of the people responsible for these
operations.
Spooks, Saudis, Raytheon . . . and Venice
Since most of the hijackers used Florida as their home base while they
were in this country, and since 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudis, a
big part of the story of the terrorist conspiracy that attacked America
is, perforce, a story  about Saudis in Florida.
And the company's name that kept coming up again and again in connection
with stories of Saudis in Florida is that of major U.S. defense
contractor Raytheon.
As recently as July, for example, Raytheon and the U.S. Air Force tested
a new air-to air-missile at the Venice airport, designed to help create
a ground-based air defense system for Homeland Defense, as well as at
Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Florida. 
We had already heard a curious story about Raytheon and Tyndall AFB,
after a former resident of the Florida Panhandle alerted us to a curious
visit that took place there in April of 1999, when Raytheon sponsored a
delegation of seven Saudi defense officials, led by Saudi Prince Turki
bin Bandar, to Tyndall AFB.
The Prince told me they were at Tyndall to get a helicopter repaired
that President Roosevelt had given his father, who had been the Saudi
king during World War II, stated hotel proprietor Peggy Wood.
When the delegation first arrived, they asked to speak to whoever was
in charge, and they wouldn't believe me when I told them that I was,
Wood recalls. 'Women don't run businesses,' they told me.
A Saudi delegation led by a Saudi Prince had indeed spent several weeks
at Tyndall AFB, we confirmed with the owner of the Driftwood Inn in
nearby Mexico Beach, where they stayed.  And one of the members of the
delegation staying at her beachside inn, Peggy Wood told us, was a Major
Mohammed Al-Ghamdi.

Linguistics professor, opponent of war packs a UT 
auditorium for calm, against-the-grain speech

The capacity crowd in the auditorium at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of 
Public Affairs is on its feet, and its roar of approval reverberates through the 
entry hall and outside patio, where hundreds who can't get in listen to the 
tumult on hastily rigged speakers. Inside, a 73-year-old gray-haired grandfather 
in a sweater and sneakers smiles sweetly at the standing ovation he has provoked 
by merely walking onstage. 
Going strictly by appearances, it's hard to think of someone less likely to 
elicit this reaction than Noam Chomsky. Slightly built and drably attired -- he 
has apparently been wearing the same honkingly unfashionable glasses for the 
last quarter-century -- Chomsky looks every inch the MIT linguistics professor 
he is. And he talks like one, too: Presented with a crowd he could easily play 
like a preacher, he instead leads them through a dense thicket of obscure 
government documents, forgotten historical facts and lengthy recitations on the 
principles of international law. Not once does he gesture emphatically or raise 
his voice. Yet the standing ovation he receives as he makes his way off the 
stage is even more fervent than the previous one. 
The reaction, of course, is to what Chomsky says, not how he says it. 
Although he will go down in many history books as the academic who 
single-handedly dominated the field of linguistics in the 20th century, his 
rock-star stature on college campuses springs from his role as a dogged and 
lacerating critic of U.S. foreign policy. Since the Vietnam War, which he 
opposed long before popular sentiment turned against it, Noam Chomsky has been a 
thorn in the side of every succeeding U.S. administration, and people either 
love him or hate him for it. 
"It was important to hear someone speak out against war and aggression," said 
John Lowe, one of those who gathered outside the doors of the LBJ Auditorium on 
Sunday, adding, "You don't get a chance to see one of the most important 
intellectuals in the world very often." 
Lowe is not necessarily guilty of hyperbole. Chomsky is the most cited living 
author in the world, and he ranks eighth on the all-time list, just behind 
Sigmund Freud. Perhaps predictably, he is better known outside the United 
States, where his views on his country's policies are more widely shared. 
"He's one of the only proofs that Americans aren't all sheep," said Phil ("I 
don't think I want to give you my last name"), a Canadian student who attended 
Sunday's lecture. "It would be scary to think of America without people like him 
in it. It's amazing he hasn't been shot." (Chomsky himself was dismissive of 
this prospect when it was raised by a questioner. "We don't have to worry about 
assassinations," he replied. "That's not the way things work here.") 
At both Chomsky's speech at UT on Sunday and his appearance at the Texas 
Civil Rights Project's Bill of Rights dinner Saturday night, Topic A was the 
proposed U.S. invasion of Iraq, and he didn't hesitate to call it "a gift to 
Osama bin Laden," referring frequently to the recently released CIA report that 
said such an act would make attacks on the United States more likely. "If we 
want to stop terrorism, the scholarly experts are agreed on how to do it," he

 According to reports in the Israeli press today the Israeli army prohibits
 Palestinian farmers from harvesting their olive crops in the West Bank,
 claiming that they cannot protect the olive pickers from attacks by
Israeli
 settlers. This will have severe consequences for Palestinian farmers, many
 of whom live in poverty, and have eagerly awaited this year's harvest.

 Early this morning, Palestinian farmers and international volunteers came
 under attack by Israeli settlers while they were picking olives close to
the
 settlement of Teqoua', near Bethlehem.  A young male settler first
appeared
 alone and started throwing stones at the olive pickers. Two Israeli
soldiers
 nearby did not intervene, even after an elderly Palestinian woman and an
 international volunteer were injured. The olive pickers continued their
 activities until more settlers appeared, including two armed guards who
 threatened the Palestinians and ordered them to leave the area. Two
settlers
 suddenly went up a hill, covered their faces and started opening fire at
the
 olive pickers.  Israeli army officers eventually arrived at the scene. The
 commander told the olive pickers; I will leave now and then there will be
 no-one to defend you against the settlers. You have to leave the area.
The
 olive-pickers were then forced to leave their fields.

 Since the olive harvest started throughout the West Bank about two weeks
 ago, Palestinian farmers have come under repeated attack by militant
 settlers. On 7 October, a young Palestinian farmer, Hani Yusuf, was shot
and
 killed by Israeli settlers while harvesting olives on his property, near
 Nablus. In other areas, armed settlers have trespassed onto Palestinian
farm
 land and stolen the olive harvest, in other cases burning and chopping
down
 trees.

 Today's Israeli military decision to prohibit the Palestinian farmers from
 harvesting the olive crops, shows again the systematic discrimination
faced
 by Palestinians, whose incomes and livelihoods are facing utter
destruction
 at the hands of not only the illegal Israeli settlers, but also the entire
 Israeli state.

First there was the U.S.-created bogeyman Osama bin Laden.
Then there was the mail delivery of U.S.-created anthrax.
Then there was the U.S.-created Master of Weapons of Mass Destruction Saddam Hussein.
Then there was The Lone Sniper® roaming Washington, D.C.
Then there was the revelation North Korea had nukes, too.

Scared yet? If so, clearly you should give up your freedoms so your government can 
protect
you from all this. Your mail must be monitored, your financial transactions must be
reported, your strolls through the streets must be taped by video cameras, your 
children
must be GPS-microchipped, your guns must be confiscated, your associates must be
screened by the neighborhood watch association, and your wealth must be confiscated to
pay for these and myriad other government programs designed to enhance your security.

And when your government puts you in a straight- jacket and locks you in a padded 
cell, it
will only be for your own safety, of course.

Terrorists hate your freedoms. That why you should give them up.

After all, the business of governing the globe leaves little room for frivolous 
liberty. Let's
see. First we must nuke Saddam. Then we will have to nuke North Korea. And then, well,
who shall we nuke next? Oh, yes, there is that other member of the Axis of Evil, 
Iran. So
little time, and so much bombing to do. Don't be impatient, just stay with the beat. 
Think of
that old 1960s song by Gene Chandler: Nuke, nuke, nuke of Earl ...

We must bomb them, because we are a peace- loving nation and international outlaws
won't do what we tell them. It's a cruel world. So all patriots should be willing to 
pay a little
extra in taxes for more munitions, more occupation armies, more foreign and
reconstruction aid, more education in American values, etc.

The burdens of empire require resources. Just send in your 401(k)or what's left of it.

Americans are a kind and generous people. But, in other parts of the world,

It must be noted that men with bad instincts are more in number than the good, and
therefore the best results in governing them are attained by violence and 
terrorisation, and
not by academic discussions. Every man aims at power, everyone would like to become a
dictator if only he could, and rare indeed are the men who would not be willing to 
sacrifice
the welfare of all for the sake of securing their own welfare.

Yes, this comes from the infamous Protocols of the Elders of Zion. But just because the
Protocols are a hoax written by the Russian Czar's secret police in the early 1900s, 
one
based on a French satire by Maurice Joly, that shouldn't prevent peace-loving nations 
from
adopting a good plan of action, anymore than the U.S. crusade against Communism
prevented the U.S. from enacting all the major prescriptions of the Communist 
Manifesto.

It appears that some coprophagous geo-pol at the Defense Policy Board came across the
Protocols one day and thought, Say! This is a good plan. It certainly makes for more
entertaining reading as a prescription for political and thought control than the mind-
numbingly cliché-ish National Security Strategy of the United States.

So, if you want to know what the U.S. administration is up to, you might as well skip 
the Hill
and Knowlton PR version, and read the original, courtesy of the Czar's secret police.
Clearly, Ras- Putin is in charge in Washington, D.C.

How else can you explain the FBI's eagerness to label as terrorist the defenders of 
the US
Constitution against federal government?

And if the Generals don't like the program, Rummy can slap them around some more.

In Joseph Conrad's novel The Secret Agent, a foreign Ambassador named Vladimir,
stationed in London, is indignant that his paid agent provocateur, Verloc, has grown 
fat and
done nothing for him recently. Vladimir insists on action, a series of outrages 
leading to
universal repressive legislation, so that England will be motivated to give up her
sentimental regard for individual liberty. So Verloc gets an idiot, his wife's 
brother Stevie,
to plant a bomb at the Greenwich Observatory. Meanwhile, Chief Inspector Heat is eager 
to
display his legendary efficiency for solving cases like this by rounding up the usual 
suspects,
but is incensed that his designated patsy, Michaelis (who had nothing to do with the
bombing), is patronized by a social friend of his wife. (There are entertaining 
asides, such
as Chief Inspector Heat's close encounter with the Professor, who walks about London 
with
explosives strapped to his body.)

There is nothing like a few killings, and a few planted bombs, to incite the sheep to 
give up
their sentimental regard for individual liberty and to fulfill their obligations of 
empire.

It could be that Moslems really did the Bali bombing, but I doubt it, it's too 
perfect.  To be honest, I speculated that something would happen against the 
Australians after our PM broke the total international isolation of Bush and Blair. 
EVERY SINGLE AUSTRALIAN whom I talked to, disagrees with our government - AND I MEAN 
EVERY SINGLE AUSTRALIAN including the Editorial of the Sydney Morning Herald.this 
has NEVER happened before!  As ABC National Australia Radio and many Australian papers 
mentioned, our government practically invited such a terrible event by 'sticking our 
neck out' far beyond ANY international codes of behavior. As a result, we lost a one 
billion dollar Wheat deal with Iraq, while our 'friends' the Americans are increasing 
their taxes on Australian farm products!!! Outrageous? NO, Mister Rense, this is the 
'normal' international code of behavior which selfish Bush and his NWO mob are trying 
to impose on the rest of the world.  Israel, IMHO tricked Austra!
 lia, and forced our government into supporting Bush blindly in order to generate 
Islamic hatret towards Australia. Once this hate is established the rest is 'clear

Amsterdam police have intercepted enough illegal chemicals to make three million 
ecstasy pills.

The drugs would have had a street value of 4.7m.

A police statement says five people have been arrested in connection with the bust.

The arrests, made on October 16, include two Dutch citizens suspected of being major 
drug dealers and two foreign criminals.

The nationality of the fifth suspect and all names are being kept confidential.

Police spokesman Eric Vermeulen, said: The two buyers and a courier were caught 
red-handed during the transfer of the narcotics.

A search of the suspects' homes turned up pepper spray, a rifle and around 34,700 in 
cash.

Mr Vermeulen described it as a very large haul.

It is a sad business when you can no longer trust your own government to
tell you the truth. That's the great harm to America that President Bush's propaganda
campaign against Iraq has caused.

Trust is a fragile but precious thing. One lie can destroy it, for once a person lies, 
you can
never be certain in the future if he or she is telling the truth or lying some more.

If only President Bush had been honest with us in regard to Iraq, then I would be 
supporting
him. All he had to do was tell the truth: There is no evidence that links Saddam 
Hussein to
the Sept. 11 attack; there is no hard evidence that he has any weapons of mass
destruction, but we suspect that he does; given his past history, we believe it is 
imperative
to get United Nations arms inspectors back into Iraq to determine the truth, for I 
fear, if he
does have weapons of mass destruction, he might one day decide to supply them to
terrorists.

Instead, the Bush administration has asserted as fact that Iraq does have weapons of 
mass
destruction, does have links to al-Qaida and is an imminent threat to the security of 
the
United States. When Iraq offers to allow the world to come see for itself, Mr. Bush 
says
that's just a trick. When Iraq offers to allow the U.N. inspectors back in, Mr. Bush 
argues
against them going. He is determined to get the U.N. Security Council to pass a 
resolution
that no leader of any sovereign nation could accept.

That's the same trick the Clinton administration pulled on Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia was 
willing
to admit U.N. or even NATO observers into Kosovo, but the United States insisted that 
as
part of the deal, NATO troops would have unrestricted access to all of Yugoslavia.
Yugoslavia turned it down, as the United States knew it would, and the bombing campaign
started immediately.

That's what Bush wants. He wants a resolution Saddam Hussein cannot accept so Bush will
have the excuse to go to war. His objective is not disarmament, but regime change and
American occupation of Iraq. American and British financial interests have never 
forgiven
Iraq for kicking them out in the late 1970s when it nationalized the Iraqi oil 
reserves. Two
of the clauses he knows Saddam will never accept are for any permanent member of the
Security Council to add its own representatives to the inspection team and another 
clause
that states armed forces should accompany the inspectors. Mr. Bush has never mentioned
to the American people that the United States corrupted the last U.N. arms-inspection
process by using it as a cover for spies. That is a fact.

Hopefully, the French will hang tough, and Mr. Bush won't get his war- triggering 
resolution.
Then he will be forced to choose between naked aggression without a U.N. fig leaf or
allowing inspectors to go back and do their job. I expect he will choose naked 
aggression.
He will call whatever gaggle of small and weak countries that give their passive 
assent his
global coalition.

I thought of George Orwell when George Bush, in a belligerent speech before he signed 
the
congressional war resolution, said it was being done for the cause of peace. That's
newspeak - war is peace.

Trust in George Bush is gone. What he is doing is anti-America in the sense that it 
violates
all the traditions that made this country great. We are like Rome now, with thousands 
of
soldiers stationed in more than 60 countries and our emperor proclaiming the right to
remove any sovereign government he doesn't like (provided, of course, it is small and
defenseless).

Far from serving the cause of peace, Mr. Bush is involving our country in a perpetual 
war
against the rest of the world, a war we will eventually lose. He is not protecting the
American people; he is endangering all of us.

The document known in English as The Protocols of the Elders of
Zion is, to many people, obviously a clumsy piece of false antisemitic
propaganda. Nevertheless, there have been and still are others who
have taken and take the work to be a kind of revelation of the truth
about a conspiracy of a small number of Jewish leaders to gain
political control of the whole world.

The Protocols seem to have been first made available to a wide
public in Russia in book form in 1905, in a Russian version. However,
there was a somewhat truncated version published in a St. Petersburg
(Russia) newspaper Znamya (The Banner) in 1903. Norman Cohn
says (Warrant for Genocide, 1966-7, p 65-66): Znamya was
edited by P. A. Krushevan, the noted and militant antisemite. A few
months before publishing the Protocols he had instigated the pogrom
at Kishinev in Bessarabia [Russia], in which forty-five Jews were
killed and more than 400 injured and 1,300 houses and shops
destroyed. There was also an untruncated edition of this version
published as a pamphlet in St. Petersburg in 1905, apparently edited
by a retired officer of the Russian Imperial Guard, G. V. Butmi, a
Bessarabian and associate of Krushevan (Cohn, p 66).

The first version in book form appeared as an appendix in the third
edition, in 1905, of a book called (in Russian) The Great in the
Small: Antichrist considered as an imminent political possibility,
by a Russian mystic named Sergei Nilus. The original manuscript,
which has never been discovered, may well have been written in
French (cf. Cohn, p 69) and translated into Russian. Cohn says (p
67) It was Nilus's version, not Butmi's, that was to become a force in
world history. That did not even begin to happen in 1905 . . . It
happened only when the book reappeared, somewhat revised and
enlarged, under the title [in Russian] He is Near, At the Door . . .
Here comes Antichrist and the reign of the Devil on earth. And it
happened because of the moment: 1917. Some say widespread
attention to the Protocols began a little later, in 1918, after the defeat
of Germany in World War I (cf. Herman Bernstein, The Truth About
The Protocols of Zion, 1935, p 50, quoting Count du Chayla,
who knew Nilus personally).

In 1921, The Times of London published three articles written by the
newspaper's Constantinople (now Istanbul) correspondent, Philip
Graves, which showed that the Protocols had been extensively
plagiarized from a book by a French lawyer and writer named
Maurice Joly. The book by Joly was called (in French) Dialogues in
Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu. It was published in
Brussels (Belgium) in 1864 (with a Geneva imprint, although the
edition I have seen is dated 1868 and has a Brussels imprint). Cohn
notes (p 74-5): In all, over 160 passages in the Protocols, totaling
two-fifths of the entire text, are clearly based on passages in Joly; in
nine of the chapters the borrowings amount to more than half the text,
in some they amount to three-quarters, in one (Protocol VII) to
almost the entire text. This should be enough to demonstrate that
plagiarism occurred.

There is one very notable difference between the Protocols as put
forth by Nilus and the Dialogues as put forth by Joly. In the
Dialogues there is no mention of Jews. These Dialogues were a
political satire directed at the government of Napoleon III in France,
during the Second Empire. Joly was given 15 months in prison by this
government for his satirical effort. The author or authors of the
Protocols, so far as they were plagiarized from the Dialogues,
substituted Jews where Joly had (non-Jewish) members of the
government of Napoleon III.

Some current believers in the truth of the Protocols have argued that
parallel passages of this sort do not damage the credibility of the
Protocols since, for example, both the Protocols and the Dialogues
could have been based on a third undiscovered document in which
the original protagonists were Jews. In this view, I suppose Joly
becomes the plagiarist who changed the alleged perpetrators of a
world-wide plot to take over the world. No such preceding document
has ever been discovered. Of course, it is impossible to prove that
none ever existed. This is a favorite tactic of many of those whose
believe in the authenticity of the Protocols. They argue on the basis of
documents that might have existed, and actions that could have taken
place, even though no evidence whatsoever is available that they
existed or took place.

Cohn says (p 103): All in all it is practically certain that the Protocols
were fabricated some time between 1894 and 1899 and highly
probable that it was in 1897 or 1898. The country was undoubtedly
France, as is shown by the many references to French affairs. There

 For Bush, Facts Are Malleable

 President Bush, speaking to the nation this month about the need to challenge Saddam 
Hussein, warned that Iraq has a growing fleet of unmanned aircraft that could be used 
for missions targeting the United States.

 Last month, asked if there were new and conclusive evidence of Hussein's nuclear 
weapons capabilities, Bush cited a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency 
saying the Iraqis were six months away from developing a weapon. And last week, the 
president said objections by a labor union to having customs officials wear radiation 
detectors has the potential to delay the policy for a long period of time.

 All three assertions were powerful arguments for the actions Bush sought. And all 
three statements were dubious, if not wrong. Further information revealed that the 
aircraft lack the range to reach the United States; there was no such report by the 
IAEA; and the customs dispute over the detectors was resolved long ago.

 As Bush leads the nation toward a confrontation with Iraq and his party into battle 
in midterm elections, his rhetoric has taken some flights of fancy in recent weeks. 
Statements on subjects ranging from the economy to Iraq suggest that a president who 
won election underscoring Al Gore's knack for distortions and exaggerations has been 
guilty of a few himself.

 Presidential embroidery is, of course, a hoary tradition. Ronald Reagan was known for 
his apocryphal story about liberating a concentration camp. Bill Clinton fibbed 
famously and under oath about his personal indiscretions to keep a step ahead of 
Whitewater prosecutors. Richard M. Nixon had his Watergate denials, and Lyndon B. 
Johnson was often accused of stretching the truth to put the best face on the Vietnam 
War. Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy, too, played with the truth 
during the Gary Powers and Bay of Pigs episodes.

 Everybody makes mistakes when they open their mouths and we forgive them, Brookings 
Institution scholar Stephen Hess said. Some of Bush's overstatements appear to be 
off-the-cuff mistakes. But, Hess said, what worries me about some of these is they 
appear to be with foresight. This is about public policy in its grandest sense, about 
potential wars and who is our enemy, and a president has a special obligation to 
getting it right.

 The White House, while acknowledging that on one occasion the president was 
imprecise, said it stands by his words. The president's statements are well 
documented and supported by the facts, Bush press secretary Ari Fleischer said. We 
reject any allegation to the contrary.

 In stop after stop across the country, Bush has cited an impressive statistic in his 
bid to get Congress to approve terrorism insurance legislation. There's over $15 
billion of construction projects which are on hold, which aren't going forward -- 
which means there's over 300,000 jobs that would be in place, or soon to be in place, 
that aren't in place, is how he put it last week in Michigan.

 But these are not government estimates. The $15 billion figure comes from the Real 
Estate Roundtable, a trade group that is leading the fight for the legislation and 
whose members have much to gain. After pleas earlier this year from the White House 
for hard evidence to make its case for terrorism insurance, the roundtable got the 
information from an unscientific survey of members, who were asked to provide figures 
with no documentation.

 The 300,000 jobs number, the White House said, was supplied by the carpenters' union. 
But a union official said the White House apparently extrapolated the number from a 
Transportation Department study of federal highway aid -- not private real estate -- 
that the union had previously cited.

 The president has also taken some liberties as he argues for his version of homeland 
security legislation. He often suggests in stump speeches that the union covering 
customs workers is blocking the wearing of radiation detectors. The leadership of 
that particular group of people said, 'No way; we need to have a collective bargaining 
session over whether or not our people should be made to wear these devices,'  he 
said in Michigan last week. And that could take a long period of time.

 The National Treasury Employees Union did indeed argue in January that the radiation 
devices should be voluntary, and it called for negotiations. But five days later, the 
Customs Service said it saw no need to negotiate and would begin to implement the 
policy, which it did. After a subsequent exchange between the union president and 
Customs Service commissioner, the union wrote in April that it does not object to 
mandatory wearing of the

In the West Bank the unemployment rate is reaching 
more than 80%. Funds meant for the reconstruction of towns and infrastructure 
are used to build mansions for Palestinian Authority bureaucrats. Virtually none 
of these funds get to Christian families, yet every single Christian school in 
the West Bank is private. Christians in the West Bank must pay to send their 
children to Christian schools or else hand them over to the Palestinian schools 
and the hatred taught there. I have personally seen videos of children in 
kindergarten being taught to kill Jews. That is what the children of Christians 
will learn if forced to attend the schools run by Yasser Arafat. 

There are fourteen Christian schools in the 
Bethlehem, Biet Jala area of the West Bank. The largest has 1200 students and 
the smallest 100. Regardless of size, all the schools have one thing in common 
and that is a lack of funds for tuition. Although many receive funds from major 
denominations, that does not cover the cost to the individual families. 


In conjunction with a Scholarship Board being set 
up by West Bank Christian educators, the Religious Freedom Coalition will 
attempt to raise funds over the next few years for tuition for Christian 
students.

"HISTORY," says T.S. Eliot, "has many cunning 
passages." What an irony that the Germany which destroyed the 20th century is 
poised to save the 21st. The people who voted the Third Reich have now voted 
"No" to the invasion of Iraq. For if Gerhard Schroeder has won a surprise second 
term it is entirely because his rival first raised Iraq and Schroeder chased him 
to say "No" to Bush. Europe now has its John Foster Dulles to stall another Suez 
in the West Asia. 

The Bush Doctrine has elevated "regime change" as 
the foreign policy alternative to national sovereignty and collective security 
under the U.N. Charter. Saddam must go. Arafat must go. The US will decide who 
is a good `un and who a Bad Boy. And if they will not do as told, 
the entire population will be bombed to smithereens. 

We have been here before. "Regime change" is what 
Hitler insisted on in ordering the Austrian Chancellor Kurt von Schuschnigg to 
quit in favour of the Nazi quisling Artur Seyss-Inquart when the Chancellor 
committed the outrage, in Hitler's eyes, of ordering a plebiscite to ascertain 
whether the Austrian people wished to be absorbed into the German Reich. 


"Regime change" is what Hitler then demanded in 
Prague. President Edouard Benes held out in the hope of his allies  France, 
Britain and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR)  coming to his 
rescue. The Soviet Union was willing but France refused unless Britain obliged. 
Instead of mobilising, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain flew (twice) 
to Hitler's feet. Waving a piece of a paper, he landed back in London 
proclaiming "Peace for our time". Germany then marched into Czechoslovakia 
without a shot being fired (an example Bush would wish to emulate by threatening 
Saddam into submission). Hitler then personally supervised regime change in the 
Hradacny palace. 

Next was Poland's turn. Hitler demanded that 
Colonel Josef Beck go and Berlin decide who will rule in Warsaw. Beck demurred. 
The Brits suddenly discovered their resolve. And the Second World War began. 
Some fifty million died in the cause of "regime change". That is why the German 
Minister of Justice bluntly compared the actions of Bush to those of Hitler. 
Bush is readying to do to Baghdad what Franco and his Nazi allies did to 
Guernica. Listen to Churchill College, Cambridge, historian Piers Brendon in his 
masterly panorama of the 1930s, The Dark Valley: 

"Waves of aircraft flew abreast to carry out the 
first European exercise in carpet bombing." The first flight dropped six bombs 
containing a ton and a half of explosives in the center of Guernica. It "caused 
havoc among passengers waiting for the Bilbao train, gashed open the front of 
the Hotel Julian and left the station plaza strewn with smashed bodies and 
smoking debris. A cloud of dust mushroomed skywards and witnesses heard the 
`wild shrieking of a terrified people.' Every fifteen minutes the raiders 
returned. They pulverised the town, creating a miniature fire-storm in its 
ruins. They destroyed three-quarters of the buildings." Priests in the Santa 
Maria church tried to extinguish an incendiary bomb "with communion wine. 
Whether the inhabitants prayed or screamed, fled or cowered, they were purused 
by flights of fighters which, `like flashing dancing waves on shingle', 
machine-gunned them from as low as 200 feet." 

The unbounded horror of it all was captured by 
Pablo Picasso on canvas. 

What Bush is threatening Iraq with if Saddam does 
not go the Benes way is what Mussolini did to Abyssinia (as Ethiopia was then 
called) when Emperor Haile Selassie refused to yield up his nation as an Italian 
colony. Here is historian Brendon again on the terrible consequences which 
followed from the technology of the Western war machine unleashed on a lesser 
breed: 

"[The Ethiopians] swarmed like a feudal host, some 
with spears and swords, others with antique rifles and colourful bandoliers. 
They lacked almost everything a modern army needs. They had no supplies save 
what they and their camp followers could carry  mainly bags of millets. They 
had no medical services apart from a few Red Cross volunteers in tents, which 
the Italians eventually bombed. They had no war-planes, hardly any artillery and 
little mechanised ground support. They had no proper communications and since 
their code was never changed the Italians could decipher the few wireless 
messages that were sent. The Ethopians had no coherent strategy and no fixed 
chain of command. All they had was a common purpose and boundless courage."

  I recently read Laurance Gardner's paper on the ancient 
  alchemical preparation called Starfire, a substitute for the supposed 
  menstrual blood of the ancient Sumerian goddess Ninkar-sag. The Sumerians 
  are believed by many, including Gardner, to be the descendants of the 
  Anunnaki, an alien race who created humanity through genetic manipulation 
  of native ape populations mixed with Anunnaki genetic material. A thought 
  occurred to me. David Icke had laid out a very convincing case in The 
  Biggest Secret that Princess Diana's death was in fact a ritual murder 
  carried out by covert black operations groups within the British and 
  French Masonic Illuminati. The location and manner in which Diana 
  died was laced with Masonic symbolism and clues. The tunnel she died in 
  was the very location of the ancient sacrificial cavern within the Temple 
  of the goddess Diana built in early Paris after it was first settled by 
  Babylonian emigrants. The 13th pillar in the tunnel which the vehicle 
  impacted also fit that same set of reoccurring numbers which show up with 
  great regularity in ritualistic Masonry. I won't list all the correlations 
  Icke gave out of respect for his original research. Read his book and you 
  will have the whole story. The ensuing cover-up seemed to be very 
  well orchestrated and appeared to be closely coordinated between the two 
  governments, but it never quite answered all the questions surrounding her 
  death. As is so often in the case of an assassination arranged by the 
  Illuminati, a patsy was already pre-selected. In this case it was the 
  limousine driver Henri Paul. The missing time in his schedule just prior 
  to the accident was used to explain his supposed intoxication, yet no 
  evidence of intoxication showed in any of the videotaped footage taken by 
  security cameras as the four left the hotel and entered the car. 
  Could Henri Paul have been on a ritualistic murder-suicide 
  mission? I know that may sound absurd, but it is well known in 
  Intelligence circles that the Western governments are expert at creating 
  mind-controlled assassins. The Tavistock Institute in Britain is one of 
  the most notorious centers for mind manipulation known anywhere in the 
  world. And there is a second possibility also. If there was any Jesuit 
  connection in Henri Paul's past, that may also be a clue. The elite 
  Jesuits are known for their extreme oath of obedience including a 
  willingness to die for the cult if so ordered. This connection is only 
  speculation on my part as I do not have the resources to investigate this 
  possibility. The aftermath of the accident was where the mystery 
  seems to deepen. Instead of being rushed to a hospital for emergency 
  treatment, the still living Diana was kept at the scene inside an 
  ambulance for an extended period of time. This was explained away by the 
  Illuminati controlled media as the French method of dealing with trauma 
  accidents. I find this very hard to believe given the circumstances. The 
  severity of this accident coupled with the fame and social position of the 
  victims would have necessitated far better treatment than that, even by 
  French standards. The Parisian police and paramedics are used to dealing 
  with celebrities and foreign diplomats. They would have known better than 
  to treat someone of her stature like an ordinary civilian. This 
  leads me to my most startling speculation. Was the beautiful and innocent 
  Diana harvested by the sick Illuminati who regarded her both as a threat 
  to the British Monarchy and a Protestant thorn in the side of the Jesuit 
  controlled Vatican? Given all of the ritualistic earmarks of her manner of 
  death and the apparent fact that she was dead on arrival at the hospital, 
  it has to make you wonder. Her consort was the wealthy son of a 
  prominent Egyptian family. Diana was a Princess of Britain. (Lon-don means 
  "New Troy"). As such, she was considered to be of Royal or 
  Babylonian-Anunnaki extraction through her mother's and father's genetic 
  lines. That was why she was chosen by the Royal family as Prince Charles's 
  mate, even though he secretly loved someone else. So, a "Babylonian" 
  Princess and an Egyptian "Prince" both died together that day. A very 
  strange coincidence. When Diana died in that ambulance before 
  reaching the hospital; was it by design? Was she allowed to die because 
  they wanted her "royal" blood for their sick rituals? Was Diana killed for

WASHINGTON  A burial box that was recently 
discovered in Israel and dates to the first century could be the oldest 
archaeological link to Jesus Christ, according to a French scholar whose 
findings were published Monday. 

An inscription in the Aramaic language  "James, 
son of Joseph, brother of Jesus"  appears on an empty ossuary, a limestone 
burial box for bones. 

Andre Lemaire said it's "very probable" the writing 
refers to Jesus of Nazareth. He dates the ossuary to A.D. 63, just three decades 
after the crucifixion. 

Lemaire, a specialist in ancient inscriptions at 
France's Practical School of Higher Studies, published his findings in the 
November/December issue of Biblical Archaeology Review. 

The Rev. Joseph Fitzmyer, a Bible professor at 
Catholic University who studied photos of the box, agrees with Lemaire that the 
writing style "fits perfectly" with other first century examples. The joint 
appearance of these three famous names is "striking," he said. 

"But the big problem is, you have to show me the 
Jesus in this text is Jesus of Nazareth, and nobody can show that," Fitzmyer 
said. 

Lemaire writes that the distinct writing style, and 
the fact that Jews practiced ossuary burials only between 20 B.C. and A.D. 70, 
puts the inscription squarely in the time of Jesus and James, who led the early 
church in Jerusalem. 

All three names were commonplace, but Lemaire 
estimates only 20 Jameses in Jerusalem during that era would have had a father 
named Joseph and a brother named Jesus. 

Moreover, naming the brother as well as the father 
on an ossuary was "very unusual," Lemaire wrote. There's only one other known 
example in Aramaic. Thus, this particular Jesus must have had some unusual role 
or fame  and Jesus of Nazareth certainly qualified, Lemaire concluded. 


However, Kyle McCarter, a Johns Hopkins University 
archaeologist, said it's possible the brother was named because he conducted the 
burial or owned the tomb. 

The archaeology magazine said two Israeli 
government scientists conducted a detailed microscopic examination of the 
surface and the inscription, reporting last month that nothing undercuts first 
century authenticity. 

Lemaire's claim was attacked by Robert Eisenman of 
California State University, Long Beach, who unlike most scholars thinks that 
"Jesus' existence is a very shaky thing." Since Eisenman is highly skeptical 
about New Testament history, he considers the new discovery "just too pat. It's 
just too perfect." 

Virtually all that is known about Jesus comes from 
the New Testament. No physical artifact from the first century related to him 
has been discovered and verified. 

James is depicted as Jesus' brother in the Gospels 
and head of the Jerusalem church in the Book of Acts and Paul's epistles. 


The first century Jewish historian Josephus 
recorded that "the brother of Jesus the so-called Christ, James by name," was 
stoned to death as a Jewish heretic in A.D. 62. If his bones were placed in an 
ossuary the inscription would have occurred the following year, around A.D. 63. 


Until now, the oldest surviving artifact that 
mentions Jesus is a fragment of chapter 18 in John's Gospel from a manuscript 
dated around A.D. 125. It was discovered in Egypt in 1920. 

There are numerous surviving manuscripts of New 
Testament portions from later in that century. Jesus was mentioned by three 
pagan authors in Rome in the early second century and by Josephus in the late 
first century. 

The ossuary's owner required Lemaire to shield his 
identity, so the box's location was not revealed. Nor is anything known about 
its history over the past 19 centuries, one reason for McCarter's caution. 


Biblical Archaeology Review editor Hershel Shanks 
said skepticism is to be expected. "Something so startling, so earth-shattering, 
raises questions about its authenticity," he said. 

Shanks said the owner bought the box about 15 years 
ago from an Arab antiquities dealer in Jerusalem who said it was unearthed south 
of the Mount of Olives. The owner never realized its potential importance until 
Lemaire examined it last spring. 

Lemaire, who was raised Roman Catholic, said his 
faith did not affect his judgment, since he studies inscriptions only "as a 
historian  that is, comparing them critically with other sources." 


The archaeology magazine is negotiating to display 
the box in Toronto during a major convention of religion scholars in late 
November, and possibly in the United States.

  Any discussion of violence and non-violence in the 
  Israeli-Palestinian context encounters a serious problem of definition of 
  terms. First, each side apparently understands its use of violence as a 
  reaction to the violence of the other. In this regard, while Israelis and 
  Palestinians generally agree on a definition of Palestinian violence--from low 
  level stone throwing to suicide bombings--Palestinians define Israeli 
  "violence" in a unique way: occupation, settlement construction, closures, and 
  curfews are "violence", regardless of how and why they came about or whether 
  bullets are fired or people injured. This brings us to the issue of moral 
  equivalency. In Palestinian eyes, the inadvertent killing by Israeli forces of 
  Palestinian civilians--usually in the course of shooting at Palestinian 
  terrorists--is considered no different at the moral and ethical level than the 
  deliberate targeting of Israeli civilians by Palestinian suicide bombers. 
  While the shockingly high numbers of Palestinian civilians killed during the 
  past two years undoubtedly, in some cases, reflect poor judgment or lax 
  discipline on the part of some Israeli troops, in Palestinian eyes there is no 
  grey area here: all violence is equivalent, whatever the motive and 
  backdrop.

Dear Dr. Alpher:
I have just read your article on non-violence in the 
October 7 issue of bitterlemons.org, and I want to express my dismay at your 
attempt to exonerate Israel for its actions since the intifada began, as well as 
your display of a selective morality that devises alibis for Israeli violence 
while condemning Palestinian violence.
At the start, you label as "unique" the Palestinian view 
that the occupation itself and such actions as settlement construction and 
closures constitute Israeli violence. I would argue, on the contrary, that this 
Palestinian definition of violence is not at all unique but is entirely 
appropriate.
Land confiscation by military force is theft, which is 
violence. As you well know, Israel has confiscated approximately 60% of the land 
area of the West Bank for military use, for settlement construction, and for 
road-building. The theft (violence) has been unprovoked. None of this 
confiscation can be explained away as a response to Palestinian terrorism. 
Moreover, this violence takes land from Palestinians for the exclusive use of 
Jews--a vile form of ethnic/religious discrimination that compounds the 
violence.
House demolitions carried out by military force against 
civilians who have no recourse to the law clearly constitute violence. When the 
demolitions are carried out because Palestinians have built or expanded homes 
without a permit, in a situation where permits are consistently denied to 
Palestinians, the demolitions cannot be explained away as a response to 
Palestinian terrorism. When the demolitions are carried out against the families 
of suspected Palestinian terrorists, this violence is unprovoked by the victims 
of the Israeli action. This is collective punishment (violence), which is 
illegal under the Fourth Geneva Convention.
The forcible confiscation of natural resources such as 
water by a military administration or by armed settlers is theft, which is 
violence. The indisputable fact that Israeli settlers use approximately ten 
times as much water per capita as the Palestinian inhabitants of the West Bank 
and Gaza are allowed to use, and that Palestinians must often stand in line to 
obtain drinking water while Israeli settlers enjoy lush gardens and swimming 
pools, constitutes the worst kind of violence: a violence directed at a civilian 
population simply because of its ethnicity and/or its religion, or rather its 
lack of the right ethnic or religious identity--because it is not Jewish. The 
denial of the basic necessities of life and basic public services to a people 
because they are not Jewish is violence of such immorality that it takes one's 
breath away.
You then proceed to compare Palestinian and Israeli 
violence and declare that there can be no moral equivalence between Israel's 
"inadvertent killing" of Palestinian civilians, "usually in the course of 
shooting at Palestinian terrorists," and the Palestinians' "deliberate 
targeting" of Israeli civilians. Your construction assumes that all Israeli 
killing of civilians is inadvertent, whereas all Palestinian killing of 
civilians is deliberate. I wonder how you explain the following:

on a particular breaking story. I came across a similar London
Evening Standard report and immediately put it on my web site. Lo
and behold, five minutes later the link was dead! Amazingly, I still had the
article up on my screen on a different browser window. I tried to archive the
page to my desktop but to no avail. I did manage to print out a copy which I
have scanned and linked below.

Before you read this, it is important to understand the
issue at hand.

We're talking about MI6 cooperation with bin Laden, arms to
Iraq and, as reported today in The Scotsman, claims
that secret services ignored warnings that might have prevented bombings in the London in
1993 and 1994.

Shayler has evidence that MI5 willfully failed to stop the
bomb attack on Israel's London embassy in 1994 and the IRA's 1993 Bishopsgate
bombing, which killed one person.

Calls for secret Shayler trial

The Government has been accused by
lawyers of trying to interfere in the trial of former MI5 officer David Shayler
by insisting that part of the proceedings are held in private.

Ministers are demanding that trial
judge Mr Justice Alan Moses agree in advance that the case go into private
session without saying why and without hearing arguments to the contrary from
the defence.

Shayler's trial, on charges under
the Official Secrets Act, was beginning at the Old Bailey today (Monday). He is
being prosecuted following newspaper interviews he gave five years ago and the
trial is expected to last for at least four weeks.

On Friday Home Secretary David
Blunkett and Foreign Secretary Jack Straw signed identical public interest
immunity certificates under which the press and the public will have to leave
court if sensitive security issues are raised.

The certificates do not specify what
information they are trying to keep secret on the grounds that to do so would
cause the very damage the Government is seeking to avoid.

They claim: Publication of
information of the kinds referred to would be likely to assist those whose
purpose it is to injure the security of the United Kingdom and whose actions in
the past show that they are willing to kill innocent civilians, both inside and
outside the UK, in pursuance of their aims.

Mr Blunkett and Mr Straw also claim
present and future intelligence operations would be compromised.

It was precisely 11.30 p.m. on Saturday 12 October 2002, when someone somewhere pressed a button that sent a single coded radio-squirt to an underground aerial located in a monsoon drain outside the Sari Club in Bali. An unseen circuit closed and a primer fired, then one-millionth of a single second later, a terrible fireball formed under the street. Less than six inches in diameter and burning at a staggering 300,000 degrees centigrade, the fireball was a perfect shimmering sphere, made possible by 99.78% Plutonium 239 manufactured at Dimona in the Negev Desert.

Five microseconds passed while this fission monster from hell expanded, then the already-cooling fireball tore its angry way out into the street above, vaporizing all victims standing within thirty feet while simultaneously spreading two tons of deadly microscopic roadbed shrapnel in a lethal arc across Kuta Beach. Every survivor standing in direct line-of-sight of its awesome ultraviolet emission received terrible flash burns, the like of which three eminent Australian burns surgeons would later claim on TV they âhad never seen beforeâ.

Less than ten-millionths of a second after the monster achieved critical mass, its searing thermal wave set fire to twenty-seven buildings in the immediate area, and spontaneously ignited automobiles parked two blocks away from ground zero. But as you will read later in this report, no ordinary Geiger counter from any nation could detect any radiation from the weapon.

This atrocity was the âpunishmentâ meted out to Australians and others opposed to the Judeo-Christian Crusade against Islam. Ordinary everyday people, Australians in particular, who had earlier been sensible enough and brave enough to speak out against their Prime Ministerâs slavish obedience to Ariel Sharon and George W. Bush in their ruthless quest to loot and destroy the Middle East. But the fission monster from hell was also designed to send a very clear and unmistakable message to like-minded dissidents in Britain: âJump on the crusade bandwagon quickly, or our Dimona thought-reform folk will pay you a visit.â

Political and paid âacademic expertâ whores were quickly thrust in front of television cameras to explain the inexplicable. How and why the bombing happened in the first place, and increasingly as harsh reality kicked in and facts became clearer, why dozens of full-size human victims had vanished completely without trace.

Every bomb expert in the world knows that conventional explosives lack the heat and velocity to âvanishâ complete bodies in this manner, except perhaps when crushed into total oblivion by a million tons of masonry as happened at the World Trade Center. When the dust from the biggest IRA bomb ever detonated in Northern Ireland finally cleared, the victims were still in the local area. Many were disassembled into large bloody body parts, but they were still generally recognizable.

When a diminutive member of Hamas recently detonated thirty pounds of TNT strapped tightly around his own chest in Palestine, emergency services still had to remove large recognizable chunks of his dismembered body from the area. Believe me people, believe me, conventional explosive cannot âvanishâ citizens without trace, and Bali simply did not have a million tons of masonry available to fall on their heads. Only a nuclear weapon has the heat needed for instant cremation, combined with the incredibly fast shock wave needed to completely remove the resulting cremated particles from the local area.

Next big problem for the politicians and âexpertsâ was the large crater in the street outside the Sari Club. Five feet deep and twenty-two feet in diameter, the crater served as proof that the weapon was detonated underground rather than on the surface. The only way any explosive can cause a crater is if it is first dropped from an aircraft and penetrates sub-surface before exploding, or if it is physically positioned sub-surface in advance. The thousand-pound Omagh bomb detonated in Northern Ireland by the IRA during 1998 did not cause a crater, nor did any nuclear weapon detonated above-ground regardless of equivalent TNT yield. Politicians and âexpertsâ alike had less of a problem than they originally thought with the crater. The helpful media folk simply refrained from showing it on television or in the newspapers, and the brainwashed public soon forgot about the crater altogether. However, there were considerably more problems with the savage blast and horrific burns ânever seen beforeâ in Australia. The STOL jet fighters formed FUCK IRAQ on the aircraft-carrier's landing deck. Foaming around the mouth, the Texan Fuehrer consigned the UN to irrelevance. Vengeful and mean-spirited, the Masters of Discourse explained and justified the forthcoming slaughter. Flashing white teeth, healthy tall broad-shouldered young blond beasts in full battledress trot across the screen of my TV set, ready to attack the small country one-tenth of their own size. The American Juggernaut began to roll, promising endless misery to the rebellious Iraq, the country that refused to accept their fake greenbacks for the black gold, the last supporter of Palestinians in the region. The war appeared unavoidable. Until last week.

Last week, it became known that Ukraine, this once rich Soviet republic, now a poor East European country, main supplier of illegal workers and white slaves for Tel Aviv cathouses, ruined and devastated by IMF and George Soros, forever begging for subsidies, the unhappy Ukraine supplied Iraq with one of its heirlooms of the Soviet days, the state-of-art radar system. Now, the American and British supermen would have to chance it. They never learned to fight their own weight. Like vicious punks, they are used to kick weak and defenceless, lying down, preferably tied-up adversary. Their cowardice and lack of chivalry are exemplified by their attack on a tiny island of Granada, on poorest Afghanistan and Sudan, on defenceless Panama. It is not coincidence they are the best friends of Israel, this world leader in child murder.

Now their total safety is in doubt: they are liable to encounter in the skies over Iraq one of the best Russian-made heat-seeking missiles guided by the modern radar system. These radars see through the stealth of the jets, and they do not check in the aircraft reception desk. This $100 million piece of hardware did not change the balance of power, but it made Bush and his administration to give the war a benefit of second thought.

They sent a high-ranking delegation to the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, to express their indignation. The Americans were annoyed like Israelis who discovered that their Palestinian prison wards smuggled in a few small arms. Next time, the cheeky Ukrainians will supply hares with bullet-proof vests and ruin the clean fun of hunt.

This blessed hesitation proves that Iraq never presented any threat to the US. If it would, Americans would never attack it, as they did not attack USSR, Japan, Germany or China. The great superpower has a heart of hyena: it attacks only small and vulnerable enemies. That is why, paradoxically, the best protection for the world's peace lays in proliferation of the nuclear weapons. Once, while the Soviet Union acted as a protector and guarantor of the Third World, it was not necessary. In those days, one could marsh for nuclear disarmament. But now, the nations of the world must go nuclear, in order to regain the deterrence.

If Iraq would have an arsenal of A-bombs, this beautiful country would be sa fe from American or Israeli threat. For the countries of the Middle East, for Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Egypt it is the right time to co-operate. Despite their differences, they have one thing in common: they are targeted by the Jewish Lobby, vide the Murawiec's affair.

One country, singled out by Bush and his Zionist speechwriters as 'Axis of Evil', understood it first. North Korea succeeded to develop its own nuclear weapons, it was announced last week. The US representatives demanded from Korea to disarm. One can understand their concern. Korea was on the shortlist of future victims, and it will be difficult to destroy a nuclear power.

Now, the UN keeps discussing the question of inspectors to be sent to Iraq. Under American pressure, the leading powers gave up the discussion whether it is justified or even useful. We should renew this discussion. Until the UN inspectors will be allowed to visit Dimona and Ness Tsiona, until the Israeli arsenal of WMD is dismantled, there is no reason to single out Iraq or Korea. The countries of the Third World should leave the Non-Proliferation Treaty, as it does not protect them anymore.

Ignorant of Iraq, void of strategic vision, and viewing the Mideast through the neoconservative prism, Bush steers America toward a quagmire.

Maj. Gen. J.F.C. Fuller, Britainâs leading military thinker of the 20th century, wrote that the object of war is not victory, but peace. A war that fails to achieve clear political objectives is merely an exercise in violence and futility.

In its headlong rush to invade Iraq, the Bush administration is violating Fullerâs simple yet immensely important strategic dictum. Britainâs Prime Minister Anthony Eden committed the same grave error in 1956 when he launched an ill-conceived invasion of Egypt which, like modern Iraq, had the audacity to defy a great power. The Suez operation was a military success that turned into a political fiasco.

The Bush administration is clearly obsessed with Iraq, but it has no clear plan on what to do with this Mideast version of ex-Yugoslavia once Americaâs military might overthrows Saddam Husseinâs regime. Nor is there understanding of how invasion and occupation will affect the Fertile Crescent, Americaâs client Arab regimes, Turkey, indeed, the entire Mideast.

There is also the dearth of reliable political information on Iraq from human sources that has long plagued U.S. Mideast policy. Much of the Bush administrationâs current view of the region has been fashioned by neoconservatives, who hold key policymaking positions in White House, Pentagon, and vice presidentâs office. Equally significant, the administrationâs non-electronic human intelligence on the Mideast and terrorism relies heavily on self-serving data supplied by foreign intelligence services and Iraqi exile groups.

The ideologues and Pentagon hawks driving administration policy recall the Roman senator Cato, who ended every oration with, âCarthage must be destroyed!â Few of these armchair warriors have even been to Iraq; less have ever served in U.S. armed forces, yet all are eager to send American soldiers to fight a potentially bloody war whose benefits to the United States are doubtful.

Lust for destruction is not policy, no matter how much Pentagon hawks and neoconservative media trumpets may yearn to plow salt into the fields of Iraq. Nor is the piratical proposal that the U.S. âliberateâ Iraq and plunder its great oil reserves to bring âcivilization and democracyâ to that benighted nation.

If Washington were truly concerned about democracy and human rights in the Arab World, it could long ago have promoted democracy in the military dictatorships and feudal sheikdoms over which the U.S. exercises paramount influence: Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the Gulf emirates. Instead, under the banner of a war on terrorism, the U.S. has been buttressing autocracy and despotism, most recently in Central Asia and Pakistan.

The first question, of course, is why should the U.S. attack and invade Iraq, a nation that has not committed any act of war against America? The rest of the world will rightly see such an act as naked aggression, a return to British and Soviet-style imperialism, and a personal vendetta by George Bush against Saddam Hussein.

According to President Bush, Iraq must be destroyed because Saddam Hussein might possess some hidden chemical or biological weapons (WMDs), or because Iraq might one day develop nuclear weapons, or might slip WMDs to anti-American terrorists, or simply because he is âevil.â The Bush administrationâs insistence on the right to preemptively intervene anywhere on earth recalls the old Brezhnev Doctrine of Soviet days.

Why Iraq alone is a danger among the 18 nations that possess weapons of mass destruction â including India whose new ICBMs will be able to deliver nuclear weapons to the U.S. â remains a mystery. Why Saddamâs ravaged, hermetically bottled up Iraq would be more of a danger to the US than 1.5 billion Muslims enraged by Americaâs perceived persecution of Iraqis, Afghans, and Palestinians also remains unclear. Terrorists donât need Iraq to concoct germ weapons, as Japanâs Aum Shinrikyo showed, and Saddam Hussein is too intelligent to invite nuclear attack by the United States or Israel by slipping germ weapons to terrorists. If Saddam had wanted to do so, he had ample opportunity from 1991-2001.

Equally unclear is why the U.S. refuses to seek diplomatic accommodation with Iraq rather than war. Saddam Hussein has repeatedly shown himself a wily survivor willing to deal with the devil, when necessary. The United States was a close ally, financial backer, and provider of arms and intelligence to Saddam in the 1980s. He is certainly not eager to face an American invasion that would bring his own demise, and would therefore welcome a diplomatic escape from the dire fate he faces.

Hate Monger Daniel Pipes, head of the Middle East Forum, has initiated a new Stalinist "Turn in Your Fellow Student/ Professor Program" for politically incorrect views on campus.

His euphemistically named "Campus Watch" claims that academics who do not toe the Pro Israel and Anti-Palestinian line should be considered "Apologists for Terrorism."

According to the website, "The Middle East Forum posted a new page today on www.campus-watch.org, a site launched last month to monitor the campus-based Middle East specialists. The new page lists more than 100 academics from North American institutions who requested to be listed on the site in solidarity with eight academics identified as apologists for Palestinian violence or militant Islam."

"The page (www.campus-watch.org/apologists.php) is posted as part of the ongoing Campus Watch effort to monitor and critique, with the goal of improving, Middle East studies at North American institutions of higher learning."

"After we launched www.campus-watch.org, academics deluged us with emails; some of them requested inclusion with the original eight professors cited," says Daniel Pipes, director of the Middle East Forum.

Imagine that. Professors emailing Pipes and saying count me in.

"Most of them are academics from other fields," continues Pipes, "and I suspect that few of them actually read our statement of purpose, for very few of them understand what issues Campus Watch was created to address. Still, if they insist on declaring public solidarity with Palestinian or Islamist violence, this is important information for university stakeholders to be aware of, so we are posting their names."

In essence, Pipes, through his tax exempt 501 c3 organization, has set himself up as the Reichsfuhrer of Politically Correct Campus Behavior. Call it a new Campus McCarthyism. Naming names with a new twist, if you will.

Pipes's disingenuous ad copy continues -- "Campus Watch addresses five problems in Middle East studies: analytical failures, the mixing of politics with scholarship, intolerance of alternative views, apologetics, and the abuse of power over students."

Is Daniel Pipes really the new Big Joe McCarthy On Campus?

Only if students and faculty put up with this new outrage against academic freedom.

While the average 401(k) holder grimaces at the sound of
the mailman delivering his monthly punishment, there
remains a single source of solace. The latest subject of
cocktail parties, and the next extraordinary popular
delusion of the US investor: the single-family home...and
the cash-out refi.

Everyone knows the drill, writes the Prudent Bear's
David Tice in the current issue of Strategic Investment.
You pay your mortgage until rates drop, then refinance.
You borrow more than enough to pay off your loan balance,
but thanks to lower rates, your monthly payments remain
the same. As a result - you walk out with a check for
$20,000 or $30,000.

And thus is the US consumer fattened a little more...the
economy given another month's reprieve...and the
'imperial currency' allowed a few more delicious breaths
on the world's center stage.

According to Tice, the refi boom of 2002 will beat
last year's hands down. No easy task, considering
Americans extracted $138 billion from their homes last
year. Annualized consumer spending for the June quarter
came in about $300 billion higher than the year
[before]...making cash-out refinancing responsible for
about half of the increase in the consumer spending
component of GDP over an entire year.

Population growth, the peace dividend, immigration, the
strong economy of the 1990s, the lowest mortgage rates
in nearly 40 years...name your poison. Not only have
house prices been driven firmly higher, but the
phenomenon has convinced the average tract house owner -
while he may have to admit he's not the stock market
wizard he once thought he was - there's a good chance
he's darn good at the property game.

Why not take advantage of the low rates and cash-out a
little...buy a new car (at 0% financing and no down
payments for 90 days, no less!)...pay off some credit
card debt...and wait around a little until the stock
market begins to boom again? Sounds so easy...why
wouldn't you do it?

Apparently, it's a no-brainer.

In 1982, Gary Shilling tells us, the average homeowner's
equity stake in his own home was about 30%. Today...at
the other end of the great bull...that number has plunged
to 16%.

Dysfunctional Bush and his anachronistic cronies are leading us right into a catastrophic Middle Eastern blowout. That much is apparent. But what's not so clear is why we're allowing it to happen.

Analyzing Dubya's psychological challenges is not enough - he's the symptom not the cause, and while the rapidity of societal decline has seemed to accelerate since 2000's farcical US presidential election, the framework for rollback was in place long before. If it hadn't been, citizens quite simply wouldn't have tolerated the rigged results.

But what mechanisms could have been used to facilitate the rollback? How can an unwilling population be trained to blindly accept a new, repressive social order?

A CIA instruction manual entitled "Psychological Operations in Guerrilla Warfare" provides some clues.

Written in the early 1980s (coincidentally, soon after Bush Sr. headed the Agency) the document was part of the US government's crusade to bring down Nicaragua's leftist government, by providing training and weapons to the Contra rebels. Detailing how to gain a community's support through propaganda and selective violence, the manual begins "In effect, the human being should be considered the priority objective in a political war ... Once his mind has been reached, the 'political animal' has been defeated, without necessarily receiving bullets."

The following are quotes from the original psyop textbook, along with contemporary examples- PSYOP quote: "It is appropriate ... to guide the discussion of a group to cover a number of points and to reach a correct conclusion." The people "should feel it was their free and own decision."

Interesting to note that up until early 2000, military personnel from the Fourth Psychological Operations Group based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina were active at CNN's Atlanta-based headquarters - and left only after public outcry when CNN admitted to employing them. Their presence was perhaps not surprising given former CIA director William Colby's boast that "the Central Intelligence Agency owns everyone of any major significance in the major media."

So much for a democratic free flow of information.

Also striking is how the "discussion" around attacking Iraq is being guided "to reach a correct conclusion."

After both the House and Senate agreed to give Bush his blank check to attack Iraq (requesting only that Bush report to Congress every 60 days if he does decide to take action) Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle called the endorsement of war "a statement of American values and resolve." Apparently Daschle was unaware of the large anti-war street protests taking place across the country, and the overwhelming number of anti-war phone calls flooding House and Senate offices.

Now that the vote is finished, the media will no doubt bombard with messages echoing Daschle's myopic observation, and assuring the American population the vote for war was their "free and own decision."

PSYOP quote: "Always be prepared with simple slogans in order to explain to the people, whether in intentional form or by chance, the reason for the weapons." A endless war requires an endless supply of cannon fodder; lucky for the military if enough recruits succumb to the sexy hype about weapons and enlist. If they don't though, there's always the Universal Military Training and Service Act (H.R. 3598) which, aiming to bring back the draft, states: "ALL males residing in the U.S. between the ages of 18-22 (must) receive military training for at least 6 months" and imposes additional time on high school dropouts.

Chew on that quote for a second. The high school dropout part is self-explanatory; longer military sentences would effectively be forced on poor kids and minorities, those most likely to drop out of school.

Yes, says Victor Ostrovsky, a former Israeli secret agent. In a new book, By Way of Deception: A Devastating Insider's Portrait of the Mossad, Mr. Ostrovsky says the Israelis had advance notice of the suicide attack that killed 241 Marines in Beirut in October 1983 but withheld the information from the United States in the hope that the attack would poison American Arab relations.

The Israeli government is desperately trying to block publication of the book, which also says the Israelis are "actively spying, recruiting, organizing and carrying out covert activities mainly in New York and Washington, which they refer to as their playground."

Although it can hardly succeed and will probably backfire, the censorship attempt enjoyed initial success in both the U.S. and Canada. Obliging courts in both countries have ordered that the book be at least temporarily suppressed When it comes to Israel, freedom of speech and of the press is considerably less than total, even in America.

Mr. Ostrovsky says Israeli agents heard he had written the book and tried to bribe and threaten him to dissuade him from going into print. He is now in hiding.

More than 17,000 copies of By Way of Deception are in print, and many reviewers have already received copies. If the book divulges sensitive information, as the Israelis' lawyers say, it's too late to stop other governments from getting it. The only purpose of the censorship is to stop Americans from reading Mr. Ostrovsky's account of how Israel allowed U.S. Marines to be slaughtered.

Books are rarely suppressed in America (at least not by direct government intervention), and by the time you read this, By Way of Deception will almost certainly be unshackled. Then the Israelis will have to either discredit the author or argue, as they did in the case of the spy Jonathan Pollard, that the decision to let the Marines be killed was a "rogue" action.

Mr. Ostrovsky's allegations should be shocking. Letting the troops of a benefactor nation be blown up in their own compound is hardly the act of a "reliable ally," as Israel is said to be.

But you have to wonder whether anyone will really be shocked. The act would be consistent with a long pattern of reprehensible Israeli behavior toward the U.S. Some of it has been widely publicized; no doubt the largest part of it has never been discovered.

If anyone ought to be stunned, it's the many pundits who echo Israeli propaganda to the effect that Israel is America's only valuable and trustworthy ally in the Middle East. If they mean what they say, they should be publicly changing their minds, or at least demanding a thorough investigation into Israeli conduct toward this country.

Congress ought to be shocked, too, to the extent that its all-out support for Israel has been sincere rather than venal and cowardly. But how many of our elected representatives will dare, or care, to ask tough questions about whether our ties to Israel have done serious damage to this country's interests?

Such questions are not only long overdue, they are especially urgent right now, when the United States may be on the verge of a full-scale war in the Middle East, and the Israel lobby is eager to see America launch hostilities against Israel's chief enemy, Iraq.

The path of least resistance is to say nothing, to go on pretending that the interests of the U.S. and of Israel are virtually identical, to keep repeating that Israel is our "reliable ally" and "strategic asset." Any politician or journalist who says otherwise, even for the good of America, does so at risk to his career. That's why there is so little open debate on these matters. Even our press isn't fully free.

And now the Israeli government has mounted a direct attack on press freedom in America itself. It will be instructive to see whether the press corps goes on acting unshocked.

was raised in a Roman Catholic Orphanage. Now I worship God as I please (I am a 
very open minded christian and don't follow any one denomination). 
 
Friends have asked me why the Roman Catholic crucifix has the sign nailed above 
the head of Jesus that says INRI. What it means is Ieshua Nazarene Rex Israel 
(translated Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews). 
 
The reason I believe this discovery is a hoax is that His name was not 
Jesus. It is a bad translation of His name. The name was Yeshua (a form of the 
name Joshua) in Aramaic and Ieshua (to the Greco- Roman world). The name Jesus 
is a corruption by people who were hard-pressed to pronounce His name. 
(Personally I believe that the name Jesus was a blending of the God symbols 
Jesus and Zeus (many pagan gods had changed over the years when incorporated 
into other cultures for instances comparing Greek and Roman gods of mythology). 

 Also the 
name Joseph (Joses in Aramaic). His name would have been Yeshua bar Joses 
(Yeshua son of Joses). Naturally this would have been very confusing at a time 
in history of no surnames (what we call last names). These were very common 
names at the time. His mother's name Mary (Miriam in Aramaic) was common also. 
The King James Bible names four brothers and un-named sisters. The Romam 
Catholic Church teaches that these had to be children of a previous marriage of 
Joses. The Bible does say that after the birth of (Yeshua) His mother (Miriam) 
was a wife to (Joses) implying all the legal and social expectations of a loving 
marriage up to and assuming the possible presence of othersiblings. This 
would not bother my faith at all if (Yeshua) had other brothers and sisters 
instead of being the only son of (Miriam) and (Joses). 
 Instead 
we have this notion of (Yeshua) being the only begotten son of God. But even the 
New Testament traces His Family tree through (Joses) being of the Line of David 
which makes no sense at all if (Joses) was not His legal or biological father. 

Can someone comment 
of this subject???

I am running Internet Explorer 5.5 with Outlook 
Express and I love to save old mail worth keeping. I have my inbox divided into 
catagories such as religion, shadow govt, history, etc. Is there an easy way to 
save old mail to another hard drive??? The only way I have found in very tedious 
and involves saving and moving each individual piece of email one at a time. The 
mail can't be moved back once you do this either. Is there a way to backup what 
is in your Inbox??? Is there a way to move multiple files??? If there isn't, is 
there another mail program that allows you to do this I set up Outlook 
Express not to delete mail on exit and also not to delete mail for 999 days (the 
most it will let you save it for.

Police are confident an accurate picture of the events leading up to
the Bali nightclub bombings is emerging.

Australia had intelligence of terror threat: report

A United States journalist claims Australian intelligence agencies
had received information about a terrorist attack against Australians
in south-east Asia ahead of the Bali bombings.

An article in the US News and World Report claims American
intelligence sources have referred to conversations between
Jemaah Islamiah operatives intercepted by Australian spy agencies,
referring to a plot to attack Australians in the region.

But the report's author, David Kaplan has told ABC Radio's AM, it is
unclear when the intercepts were made, or if they were deciphered
before the Bali attacks.

What we can confirm to the best of our sources is before the attack
on Bali there were conversations among JI operatives - Jemaah
Islamiah - that were picked up by Australian intelligence, talking
about hitting Australians in the region, he said.

We're not even sure it was in Indonesia, we're not sure it was in
Bali, like a lot of this intelligence it tends to be rather amorphous.

Defence Minister Robert Hill says there was no specific warning of a
terrorist attack in Bali.

I can't obviously ... speak on specific intelligence in any event, but
what I can say is that each of our intelligence agencies have advised
the Government that they had no specific information on a threat to
tourists in Bali, he said.

And the US has said the same thing after searching its records and
the British have said the same thing after searching its records, and
it's also the position of the Indonesians.

Domestic links
Mr Hill says there are individuals in Australia who have links to JI
and may even be operatives of the radical Islamic group.

The Minister has responded to news reports yesterday that cells
called Mantikas are in Australia.

He has told the ABC's Lateline program there are definitely
connections.

We know that within Australia there are those that are trained by Al
Qaeda, he said.

We know there has been constant movement obviously from
Indonesia into Australia and that may well include JI supporters. It
may even include JI operatives.

Senator Hill says the Government began to know Jemaah Islamiyah
better after planned attacks in Singapore on the Australian, US and
British embassies.

Detonation
Australian and Indonesian police in Bali say their joint investigation,
Operation Alliance, is now trying to determine how the twin bomb
blasts on the island resort were detonated.

It is now believed a total of 190 people may have died in the blasts
at Kuta.

Police say the first bomb in Paddy's Tavern was made from TNT.
The second in a vehicle parked outside the Sari Club is thought to
have been made from up to 100 kilograms of ammonium nitrate or
fertiliser mixed with fuel.

With speculation a suicide bomber may have been involved, police
say determining just how the bombs were detonated is crucial to
their investigation.

Indonesian police have confirmed they are preparing a sketch of a
suspect in relation to the bombing, who they indicate is linked to
Jamaah Islamiyah.

The sketch is based on statements from witnesses to the bombing.

Tax hike
Prime Minister John Howard has raised the possibility of raising
taxes to pay for higher defence spending after the attacks.

In an interview with The Bulletin magazine, Mr Howard said it is
inevitable more will have to be spent on defence.

When asked about a rise in taxes to pay for the increase, Mr
Howard says the rise will have to be funded, but says it is too early
to say by how much.

But to secure any increase in taxes to pay for defence spending he
will need the support of the federal Oppostion and the Democrats.
Democrats leader Andrew Bartlett has already responded, saying he
would have to be convinced of the need for an increase.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (CNN) -- An al Qaeda operative now in U.S.
custody has told the FBI about plans to attack popular bars and
nightclubs in Southeast Asia, according to classified documents.

His name is Mohammed Mansour Jabarah, an al Qaeda operative
arrested in Oman last March.

FBI documents obtained by CNN tell how Jabarah admitted to
planning suicide-bombing attacks against the U.S. embassies in
Singapore and the Philippines.

Jabarah worked with another al Qaeda operative also now in U.S.
custody, Omar Al Faruq.

Based in Indonesia, Al Faruq gave the CIA information last month
which shut down several U.S. embassies in Southeast Asia.

But a third plotter remains free -- al Qaeda operative Riduan
Isamuddin, aka Hambali.

Intelligence authorities say Hambili is deputy leader and operations
chief of Jemaah Islamiya -- a militant Islamic group suspected of
having links to the bombings in Bali as well as recent attacks in the
Philippines.

They say he is still directing operatives across the region from
Indonesia.

Jabarah told his FBI interrogators that Hambali was planning to
conduct small bombings in bars, cafes or nightclubs frequented by
westerners in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and
Indonesia.

That intelligence, CNN was told, has been passed to U.S. allies and
may have contributed to recent actions and advisory warnings by
Britain, Australia and other countries.

The actions ... show that there is danger out there, that the war on
terror continues and that the threats are serious, warns U.S.
Ambassador to Indonesia Ralph Boyce.

Authorities in Indonesia and in the region say Hambali may have
been behind the explosions in Bali, which killed nearly 200 people
on October 12.

The coordinated, near-simultaneous attacks on the Indonesian
island are in addition to five recent explosions in the Philippines.
The attacks bear a striking resemblance to bombings allegedly
organized by Hambali in those two countries two years ago, Filipino
investigators say.

Two of the explosives used in Bali -- ammonium nitrate and TNT --
authorities say, have been stockpiled by the Jemaah Islamiya (JI).
The group's alleged leader is Abu Bakar Ba'asyir, arrested this week
by Indonesia but still to be questioned.

Although he has been placed under arrest, Ba'asyir has not been
linked to the Bali blasts, despite authorities' suspicions that JI is
linked to the attack.

Abu Bakar Ba'asyir is the emir -- he is the head of the JI network,
though he denies it exists, says Southeast Asian analyst, Zachary
Abuza.

Terrorism experts say Ba'asyir and Hambali sit on the shura or
leadership councils of both JI and al Qaeda.

The Bush administration plans to put JI on its list of terrorist
organizations this week, a senior official told CNN.

At the same time, Indonesian intelligence sources say they expect
to make arrests in the coming days which could pinpoint Hambali's
location and help stop future attacks.

GOP... False Front For For The Liberal Establishment

If only Jeopardy would dedicate a category to modern American politics, especially the 
conservative scene. I would love to see Alex Trebek ask the eager panel of 
contestants: They claim to be conservatives while clinging to the welfare state and 
worshipping a foreign power. A contestant would quickly hit the buzzer, answering, 
What are Neoconservatives? Correct, Alex would respond, since itd be emblazoned 
there on the blue card in his hand. Not everybody appreciates hearing the truth, 
though. Lots of complaints are flying through cyberspace that neoconservatives are 
being bashed, that the war on terror is being criticized, and so on. The 
Establishment seems to wish that political upbraiding were a one-way street. Poor 
babies. They can dish it out, but they cant take it. Neoconservatives have a nasty 
penchant for playing the victim while they ideologically sodomize the American people. 
Lets examine two of the major attributes of neoconservatism from our Jeopardy c
 atego
ry question:

1. They did not truly shed their commitment to the welfare state.

What is neoconservatism? The Old Right, paleoconservative scholar M.E. Bradford 
clearly explains in The Reactionary Imperative (1990) the infiltration and subversion 
of the conservative movement by forces of the Left (the neocons):

There are, to be sure, certain groups who have recently attached the conservative 
label to themselvesbecause it allows them to so redefine our position that we can no 
longer hold it for our ownallows them to steal our identity and put it to uses at 
variance with its origins: to invert it into something foreign to itself, leaving 
those who are still conservatives in the familiar sense of the term with no ground on 
which to stand. These interlopers want to get their agenda defined as axiomatic by 
leaving no useful space to their right; and they want all the persuasive advantages 
that come, in a post-liberal era, of calling their view conservative regardless of its 
essentially statistand coercively egalitarian implications. Our first priority is to 
refuse firmly and vigorously to surrender our hard-won identity to those who would use 
it as a cloak for policies contrary to what we intend. Lines of demarcation must be 
drawn, and swiftly.

The neocons took the liberalism of the sixties and baptized it with the title of 
conservatism. Neoconservatives admit this during their more candid moments. One of 
the most revealing essays of the neoconservative movement is A Return to National 
Greatness: Manifesto for a Lost Creed by David Brooks, which appeared in William 
Kristols Weekly Standard magazine. Brooks writes,

For much of this century, liberals possessed high aspirations and a spirit of 
historical purpose. Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points, the New Deal, John F. Kennedy's 
New Frontierthese were efforts to aim high, to accomplish some grand national 
endeavor. Liberals tried to use American preeminence as a way to shape the world, 
fight communism, put a man on the moon. But then came the 1970s, and suddenly 
liberalism became a creed emphasizing limits.

Brooks nostalgia for the liberal lions of the past is quite clear in the passage 
above. The neoconservatives saw the Radical New Left of the 1970s as incompatible with 
their own objectives, so they separated from their more radical brethren. For men like 
Brooks, neoconservatism picks up where liberalism leaves off after JFK, before the 
emergence of the New Left. I guess that it is conservatism in a way, but you have to 
really pay attention to writers like Brooks to learn just what it is the neocons seek 
to conservethe liberal agenda (the lost creed)!

The neocons simply desire to streamline the New Deal, and make it more efficient. They 
show no signs of abolishing the New Deal. As the neocons captured conservative 
institutions throughout the 1970s and 80s, the record shows that they did not abolish 
such liberal fixtures as the Department of Education or the Proletarian Broadcasting 
System (PBS). Bill Clinton probably did more to roll back the welfare state. 
Neoconservatives have proven to be part of the problem, not part of the solution. They 
tinker around the edges, and mindlessly believe that the status quo is worth 
preserving. They fail to recognize just how far this modern America has slipped into 
the gutter. Of course, observers should have seen trouble when the neocons endorsed 
John McCain for the presidency, a man whom Democrats love.

Is neoconservatism popular, or a mass movement? Absolutely not. David Brooks 
expresses some sentiments in his aforementioned essay that appear as if they were 
written by an elitist liberal, if I didnt know that Brooks writes for the Weekly 
Standard. Brooks states,

Why I Am Opposed To The NWO Groupies

I have gotten a lot of letters from the extremely gullible segment of our political 
society demanding to know why I cannot seem to grasp the wonderful benefits of a 
single world government such as they believe it will be, and how I could possibly be 
opposed to such a benevolent world rule...

There is nothing new about one world rule. From a political and economic point of view 
ruling the world means controlling everything one can reach that is worth controlling. 
Alexander conquered the whole world that he could reach and the treatment of those he 
conquered serves as a model for the realities of life under a world dictatorship. Rome 
also conquered pretty much the whole world that it was aware of (until it hit 
Germania). Life was pretty good if you happened to live in the capital city within 
walking distance of the Colloseum and the Circus Maximus, but everywhere else life was 
made harsh by Roman rule, else there would have been no need for legions located 
across the empire to stamp out rebellions by the tax-weary populace. All conquerors 
like to boast that they are a benefit to the conquered, but common sense and history 
shows this to be a self-serving lie. Whether you are Caesar, Hitler, or Bush, if you 
use military might to force your way of life on another, the
 n the
 people being forced clearly do not agree that the way of life of the conquerors is a 
blessing.

One World Government is just the vanity of some tyrant wanting to say, I own it all, 
and like Alexander, who deliberately shattered his kingdom upon his death so that 
nobody else could be the ruler of the world, such egomaniacs could care less about the 
population living under that one world rule. It's all about their name in the history 
books and on monuments and no matter how many have to die for it.

One world rule is great for the rulers; terrible for the ruled. People who believe 
otherwise probably believe that the alien mother ship is arriving in the tail of the 
next comet.

My opposition to a one world government is based on two arguments, one obvious, and 
one subtle.

The obvious argument against a one world government is that while the NWO groupies 
imagine a one world government with a benevolent Santa Claus in charge, the reality is 
that power will attract the very sort of people who should not have it, who will do 
anything to get it, and therefore once they have it, will do anything with it.

Human history proves that as soon as we are all slaves to a one world government, it 
is inevitable that this government will fall into the hands of another Hitler, Stalin, 
Pol Pot, or Torquemada. No purported safeguards can prevent that from happening. 
Hitler was elected by the German people, and our own recent history proves that 
elections can be rigged by powerful individuals or agencies.

Past genocidal monsters were stopped because the nations they ruled, however powerful, 
were only one out of many. Those other nations were then able to band together to stop 
the single monster, as was the case in WW2.

What happens if a One World Government falls into the hands of another Hitler? The 
people of the world would be no more able to stop a new Hitler than the people of 
Germany were able to stop the first one. Imagine the world today if Hitler had won 
WW2. That is, the world which MUST sooner or later come to exist, cannot help but come 
to exist, under a one world government. That danger alone, of the creation of a one 
world dictatorship waiting to be plucked as a prize by the most ruthless cutthroat the 
species can breed, is alone reason to abandon the suggestion of a one world government.

Think of a multi-national world as a ship with multiple water tight compartments. No 
matter what happens to any one compartment, the ship as a whole sails onward. A one 
world government is a ship with only one compartment. If that compartment gets into 
trouble, the whole ship must sink. Even today, the absence of international barriers 
to trade means that economic folly by one government can have disastrous consequences 
for all others. Compartmentalization is a good thing--for ships, economies, and 
governments.

The second reason to avoid a one world government is a bit more subtle. The creation 
of such a one world government pre-supposes that the very structure of such a 
government is the best of all possible systems under which people could be ruled. But 
every system ever created assumes that they are the best possible system. The 
Egyptians believed that. So did the Romans. So did the Theological rulers during the 
Inquisition. So did the Confederacy. And the rulers of such systems, being the 
beneficiaries, worked hard to preserve those systems and to crush out examples of 
alternative systems that might actually be better ones.

Over time, new social systems evolve to displace old ones. Often, wars are fought for

For the past few weeks Ive been reading articles by so called conservative writers 
about how those that are against this perpetual war on evil are essentially leftist, 
i.e. - liberal, socialist, communist, etc... blah blah. They erroneously call 
themselves conservative, which they are not in the true sense of the word. These 
individuals are part of the mysterious Babylonian deception of latter days in which 
they hate everything they perceive as leftist oriented, because essentially, in part, 
that is where they come from. In other words, they hate to see in others what they 
hate the most within themselves, and if they find themselves in opposition to anyone, 
the opposition is instantly labeled as a lefty and veracity has nothing to do with the 
incongruous conclusion, its just the facts.

Logic without Truth and morality is a very corrupting influence. In many instances 
Fact and Truth are contradictory to each other. As Christians we know this reality to 
be absolutely and fundamentally true. We Christians, as truth seekers, are drawn 
closer to God because God is Truth and His Son Jesus Christ is the ultimate Truth and 
the purveyor of all truth which is His Word. To the neoconservative (neocon), reality 
is facts not truth; its a world where their reality and facts consistently 
contradicts truth. This twisted view of the world where everything becomes relative to 
ones own perception is primarily based on irrational emotions and is perpetually 
interchangeable swayed by its arbitrary randomness where one day it means this and the 
next day it means that, like tiny electrons - atomic particles swirling around its 
degenerated nucleus forming and re-forming from one acceptable virtual image to 
another. Neocons are immersed in a pseudo reality disconnected from truth
  and
God.

The neocons demand that we put are faith in the corrupt institution called government 
and its military power and not to the God of our faith, and they only invoke Gods 
name when its politically expedient for them to do so. They call upon God to bless 
them and this nation so they can go abroad to slay monsters and to exact evil unto 
them that have done evil unto us. What hypocrisy! What utter contempt for God and His 
word. They demand that we adopt the attitudes and tactics of our evil enemies that our 
government just happened to create for other purposes, in order to defeat them, 
lowering ourselves to our enemys perverse and degenerative level, to put our faith in 
the institutions of government for solutions to problems that those same institutions 
created in the first place.

These neocons who see RED everywhere and who demand facts and nothing but, erroneous 
or not, give hypocrisy its absolute meaning. The United States under the rubric of 
fighting the RED MENACE established dictatorships in Central and South America with 
their death squads, in the Middle East and other parts of the world, in some cases 
constitutionally illegal acts, and call this exercise in duplicity righteous. Do these 
Tartuffes really think that God sees a difference here? There are plenty of so called 
facts in the Balkans, the destruction of a nation, the destruction of a society, 
thousands of dead Christians in the name of what? Humanitarian compassion, democratic 
plurality, the stench of neocon duplicity is nauseating. Our government created, 
armed, and trained KLA terrorists to kill and murder Christians, it was a joint effort 
by the democrats and republican neocons. But, since it wasnt the Russians or the 
Chinese that created and let loose these Muslim terrorists, bu
 t the
 United States, then it just plainly cannot be evil and it definitely isnt RED. What 
do you call that? Factual irrelevancy? Maybe it just isnt relative enough. By the 
way, our wonderful conservative President Bush was all for it.

Speaking of Muslim terrorists, the neocons are trying to link Al-Qaeda with the 
beltway sniper and they have absolutely no evidence that this contention is the truth, 
sheer speculation and conjecture will do just fine. Just look at the terrorists 
tactics...He's to methodical, using snipers weaponry, .223 projectiles and tarot cards 
who knows he's god, it must be a trained Al-Qaeda terrorist. They are even calling for 
the military to take over and seal off the entire region to try and put an end to this 
murder spree. Nothing like a neocon and their military solutions for everything. Most 
experts believe that its a homicidal maniac, but thats not logical for the neocon, 
it has to be Al-Qaeda. Makes me wonder how long it will take them to link the

Israeli retaliation targets olive harvest and waterholes

Israel signalled yesterday that in deference to Washington's campaign against Iraq it 
will hold back from its usual tough response following Monday's suicide bombing which 
killed 14 bus passengers.

But it swiftly made life harder for many Palestinians with a ban on drilling for water 
because it said the Palestinian Authority leader is conducting a water intifada. It 
also barred olive picking at the height of the harvest.

The ban on bore holes is particularly tough as it means many Palestinians are unable 
to irrigate crops. Some villages will be deprived of drinking water.

After the last major suicide bombing a month ago, Israeli tanks again laid siege to Mr 
Arafat's headquarters in Ramallah, reducing much of it to rubble until the Palestinian 
leader was trapped in one isolated building with about 200 followers. The Israelis 
would have been content to leave him there, but the White House pressed prime minister 
Ariel Sharon to lift the siege because it was undermining the US campaign to win Arab 
backing for an attack on Iraq.

After Monday's bus bombing, in which some of the victims were burned alive in the 
inferno that engulfed the vehicle when its fuel tank blew up, the Israelis apparently 
did not need to be asked to consider an alternative reaction.

The interior minister, Eli Yishai, said Israel is taking American interests into 
account in deciding its response.

There are those who say that we need to react now and immediately, with all power and 
all force, Mr Yishai told Israeli army radio. On the other hand, we could cause 
difficulties for the Americans. If the Americans attack Iraq, it's in our interest as 
well as that of the Americans.

But the government apparently found other ways to make the Palestinians pay, even 
though it denied any linkage, when the infrastructure minister and leader of the 
extreme rightwing National Religious party, Effie Eitam, ordered a ban on Palestinians 
drilling for water in the West Bank.

A member of the Palestinian Hydrology Group, Abdel Rahman Tamimi, said the move 
prevents many in the occupied territories from irrigating fields and will deprive some 
villages of their only access to water.

If they apply this thing, that means most of the Palestinian farmers in the north of 
the West Bank and the Jordan valley will not be able to pump water for their fields. 
Some of those wells are also used for drinking, he said. If it is allowed to go on, 
most of the land in the north will be under threat of desertification and then people 
will have to leave. That's what the Israelis want, of course.

Mr Eitam said he issued the order because the Palestinians are conducting a water 
intifada. He said the authority had failed to build purifying facilities in the hope 
of polluting Israel's ground water, and he accused it of stealing water from 
Israel and Jewish settlers in the occupied territories.

Mr Tamimi sees it differently. The Palestinians have been reluctant to expand the 
water treatment plants for a reason: the Israelis want to force the Palestinian water 
authority to connect the Jewish settlements on the West Bank to those treatment 
plants. It's a way of trying to force the Palestinians to recognise the settlements as 
legal and legitimate.

Mr Eitam said the ban was imposed in consultation with the defence minister, Benjamin 
Ben-Eliezer, who imposed his own restrictions yesterday by barring the picking of 
olives mid-way through an already difficult harvest.

Technically, the ban has been put in place because the army says it lacks resources to 
protect Palestinians from Jewish settlers who have been attacking pickers across the 
West Bank. But the Palestinians say that there is a lack of political will to protect 
them, and that the bar on olive picking will have a devastating impact on a key source 
of food and cash for many communities.

The Vichy years were among the most paradoxical eras in French cinema: a time of
shortages and political terror during which the film industry flourished. The 
pre-eminent
outfit was the German financed and controlled Continental Films, which made around 30
features between 1940 and 1944, Simenon adaptations, romantic comedies and period
dramas among them. Amazingly, the film-makers working at Continental largely maintained
their integrity and independence. Their movies were never simply propaganda pictures on
behalf of Pétain and Hitler.

The French cinema succeeded 98% in not being Pétainist, says director Bertrand
Tavernier. That's the first act of resistance. His new film, Laissez-Passer 
(translated as
Safe Conduct), chronicles the experiences of two men during this period: the 
flamboyant,
womanising Jean Aurenche (Denis Podalydès), among the most celebrated screenwriters of
the day, and Jean Devaivre (Jacques Gamblin), a hard-working assistant director who 
used
his job as cover for resistance activities.

It's a measure of how sensitive the French are about the Vichy era that Tavernier's
freewheeling, humorous three- hour epic has caused huge rows and led to a major fallout
between Devaivre, now in his 90s, and the director who brought his story to the 
screen. In
London to promote the film, Tavernier seems bemused and wearily amused by the
controversy. He was, he says, inspired to make Laissez-Passer by the experiences of his
father, writer and editor René Tavernier. He was confronted with many of the same
dilemmas as Jean Aurenche, such as, what can you write in a period of such censorship
under a regime you despise? Maybe I made the film because of him.

Tavernier senior was founder of a magazine called Confluences that published the work 
of
Louis Aragon, Paul Eluard and others during the Occupation. He was heavily criticised 
by the
Vichy authorities for translating several chapters of For Whom the Bell Tolls, 
Hemingway's
Spanish civil war novel (not a book the fascist censors approved of). He detested 
novelists,
like Louis-Ferdinand Céline and Robert Brasillach (executed by a firing squad in 1945 
for
intellectual collaboration with the Nazis), who became lackeys of the Germans.

Aurenche, like René Tavernier, hated everything Vichy stood for. His screenplays 
written for
Continental expressed this loathing, even if it was in coded fashion. It was his 
misfortune, a
generation after the war, to be on the receiving end of François Truffaut's diatribes 
against
le cinéma du papa. The literary adaptations that he wrote with his partner Pierre Bost 
in the
1950s were considered anathemas by the new wave; as a consequence, Aurenche and
Bost disappeared into obscurity until Tavernier hired them to write his debut feature, 
The
Watchmaker of St Paul, in 1973.

Truffaut misfired - he should have attacked the directors, not the screenwriters, 
Tavernier
says now. By attacking Aurenche, he attacked the person who was closest to the new
wave - the person who was ready to experiment and who was the most open. He was the
one who told me: get rid of the plot; we must write only for our pleasure. He was the
contrary to the technician Truffaut described. He was a kind of a poet, sometimes 
misfiring,
sometimes brilliant.

Fortunately, Aurenche never seemed bothered by his fall from grace. I figured it was 
time
to retire anyway, and I had enough money to live on and preferred the country to 
Paris, he
said in an interview not long before his death in 1992. He was amazed when Tavernier
summoned him out of retirement, and would doubtless have been equally startled to learn
that his old friend had made him one of the main characters in a movie about the Vichy
years.

The relationship between Tavernier and Devaivre is more complicated. By organising the
re-releases of two of Devaivre's movies, The 11 O'Clock Lady and The Farm of Seven 
Sins,
Tavernier helped revive the reputation of a film-maker who would otherwise have
warranted little more than a footnote in French film history. At first, the two men 
got on
famously. Devaivre, a reticent old man (he was born in 1912), told Tavernier stories 
about
his wartime exploits that even his family had never heard. He cooperated with Tavernier
throughout filming and, after he saw the movie, sent Tavernier a letter declaring it a
masterpiece. Then he began to backtrack rapidly. Two months afterwards, he made some
very minor criticisms. He said that his flat was more beautiful than the flat in the 
film, and
he wanted me to include a shot of a castle he saw when he was coming down by parachute
and bought two or three years later. We had several disagreements like that.
