Uh huh does this seem like it's just a tad too convienient
to anyone else . First the internet community puts out up a roar
in response to the inherent privacy invasion of all these
tracking devices popping up and suddenly the virus of all viruses
comes along , warranting FBI notifications for the first time
ever . Then we are all saved from sure destruction of our beloved
e-mail capabilities by the very chips we all so despise , thereby
proving the error of our ways as these ID's are our friends .

 Melissa creator may be uncovered

Thanks to a controversial serial ID number, researchers seem
to
 have found
 the virus writer.

 By Robert Lemos, ZDNN
 March 29, 1999 5:49 PM PT

Two software engineers have extracted information from the
 Melissa virus
that appears to lead to an account on America Online Inc. and
a
 Web site
that, if matched with a person, could lead law enforcement
 officials to the
 author of the prolific virus.

The key is a controversial serial number, called the Global
 Unique
Identifier or GUID, which is included in files created with
 Microsoft
Corp.'s (Nasdaq:MSFT) Office, as well as some other
 applications, including
Visual Basic. The serial number raised the concern of privacy
 advocates just
a few weeks ago for its ability to be used to trace certain
 documents back
 to their creator.

That's exactly what two software engineers have done. Using
the
 unique
number, Richard M. Smith, president of software tools
developer
 Phar Lap
Software Inc., and Fredrik Bjorck, a Swedish PhD student at
 Stockholm
University's Department of Computer and System Sciences, have
 tracked down
the virus writer to at least one specific Web site.

"We can't be one hundred percent sure," said Smith. "There is
a
 possibility
that (the Web site author) was framed. There is a possibility
 of little
green men coming from Mars, too."

In other words, the electronic "fingerprints" on the Melissa
 virus inserted
in the Word macro and those on the documents posted on the Web
 site are the
same. The electronic fingerprint, called the media access
 control (MAC)
address, is a unique serial number for a PC's Ethernet card.

The Web site belongs to a malicious hacker, and a writer of
 virus tools,
known by several handles, including VicodinES, Sky Roket, John
 Holmes, and
Johnny "One Leg" Johnson, among others, according to Smith.

 Posted on alt.sex

Sky Roket is the name of an America Online user, and is also
 the name on the
original e-mail that posted Melissa to the alt.sex newsgroup.
 But Smith
believes that Sky Roket is being used to camouflage the
 activities of
VicodinES. America Online (NYSE:AOL) would not comment on
 whether that
particular user was being investigated by the FBI. The FBI
also
 declined to
 comment on any potential investigation.

However, whoever controls Sky Roket has a history of posting
 viruses. Under
the same handle, at least three viruses were posted in late
 1997 in exactly
the same manner (1, 2, and 3). All were attributed to
 VicodinES's authorship.

According to Phar Lap's Smith, the MAC address derived from
the
 Word
document's GUID and the one derived from the documents on Web
 sites
registered to VicodinES and Sky Roket match. The connection
was
 first
pointed out by Bjorck in Sweden.

ZDNN has independently confirmed that documents accompanying
an
 Office 2000
macro virus on VicodinES's Web site, created by the person
 using the Vicodin
handle, include the same electronic fingerprint as the Melissa
 virus.
Another one of VicodinES's files is stored on Skyroket's
 personal site on AOL.

This could be a costly mistake for the writer. The FBI is
 looking to
prosecute the writer with a fine of $350,000 and five to 10
 years, according
to statements made by Michael Vatis, director of the National
 Infrastructure
 Protection Center.

New Fast-Spreading Virus Takes Internet by Storm

 By MATT RICHTEL
 The New York Times

SAN FRANCISCO -- A rapidly spreading computer virus forced
 several
large corporations to shut down their e-mail servers on Friday
 night as
it rode the Internet on a global rampage, several leading
 network security
 companies reported Saturday.

The security companies said early reports of the virus, which
 is carried by e-
mail, led them to believe that tens of thousands of home and
business computers had been infected on Friday alone. The
virus
reproduces itself exponentially, they said, trying to use each
 infected
message to send 50 more infected messages.

"This is the fastest-spreading virus we've seen," said Srivats
 Sampath,
general manager for the McAfee Software division of Network
Associates, a Santa Clara company that makes anti-virus
 software.

Network security experts said that the virus appeared to do no
 harm to the
machines it infected and that individuals could easily disable
 it. But
they said its purpose is to interrupt networks by replicating
 itself so rapidly
that it overwhelms networks and e-mail servers, the electronic
 post
 offices that direct message traffic.

E-mail infected with the virus, which its creators call
 Melissa, has a topic
line that begins, "Important Message From." Next is the
 sender's
name, which is often the name of a friend, fellow worker or
 someone else
 known to the recipient.

The message within the e-mail is short and innocuous: "Here is
 that
document you asked for ... don't show anyone else ;-)"
Attached
 to it is a
40,000-byte, or 40K, Microsoft Word document named list.doc.

When the recipient opens list.doc, the Melissa virus
 automatically searches
for an e-mail address book. It then sends a copy of itself --
 the
message and attachment -- from the recipient to the first 50
 names it finds
in the recipient's address book, which accounts for the rapid
 acceleration across the Internet.

The virus is known to spread rapidly with two popular e-mail
 programs,
Microsoft Outlook and a slimmed-down version of the same
 program,
Microsoft Outlook Express, which is part of the Windows 98
 operating
system and is often installed with Windows 95.

Network security administrators said they had seen no evidence
 that
Melissa was able to open and use the address books in other
 e-mail
programs, but they did not rule out the possibility that it
 could and would do
 so.

Several anti-virus software makers posted software on their
Web
 sites that
their customers can download to detect the virus-encoded
 message and refuse it.

A fix for the general public was available on
www.sendmail.com,
 the Web
site of Sendmail, the Emeryville company whose post-office
 software
is often used to direct mail on the Internet.

Eric Allman, a co-founder of Sendmail, said he was concerned
 that the
problem would worsen on Monday morning when employees find
 these
messages in their e-mail in-boxes. "This will get into a lot
of
 mail boxes and
lay dormant," he said. "When employees come in at 8 a.m. and
read these messages, it will cause an explosive growth of the
 virus."

Allman characterized the virus' virulence as "not the worst
I'd
 seen, but it's
pretty bad." He added, however, that it appeared to be the
 fastest-replicating virus he had seen.

Individuals can avoid contracting or spreading the virus
simply
 by not
opening the attachment that accompanies the e-mail. Opening
the
message alone will not cause the virus to copy the address
list
 and send
 itself out.

Alternatively, users can disarm the virus by disabling the
type
 of program
that contains it -- "macros," which are small applications
used
 to
automate tasks in Microsoft Word documents. Disabling macros
in
Microsoft Word will render the virus ineffective.

Officials from Microsoft said they were not certain of the
 magnitude of the
virus and emphasized that it could be easily disarmed. Adam
 Sohn, a
company spokesman, said, "If folks are careful about what runs
 on their
 machine, they'll always be fine."

The virus overwhelmed employees on Friday at GCI Group, a
 public
relations firm with offices throughout the United States.

One contract employee, who exchanges mail with a number of
 company
employees, said she received more than 500 messages during the
 day.

"It hosed my entire day," said the employee, Leigh Anne
Varney.
 "You can't
print the words I used. I've never had this happen before."
 This
hardly is the first virus to attack and spread automatically
 via e-mail, but it is
the first to move from being a controlled, essentially
 experimental
 form

'Melissa' Virus Plays Havoc With E-Mail

 By Dick Satran

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A computer virus described as the
 most widespread
ever hit the Internet Monday, forcing some companies to shut
 electronic mail
systems and prompting an investigation by the FBI cybercrime
 unit.

Computer security firms had issued warnings through a wide
 variety of media
over the weekend that the virus called ''Melissa'' would be
 sprung on millions
 of users.

``This has caused the havoc we expected,'' said Sal Viveros, a
 vice president
of marketing at the No. 1 computer security firm, Network
 Associates Inc., in
a Monday conference call. ''It's seriously hit virtually
 everyone.''

The virus, named Melissa, greeted huge numbers of workers as
 they signed on to
their e-mail systems at the start of the work week, spreading
 ``more quickly
than any other virus in the history of viruses,'' Viveros
said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigations's National Infrastructure
 Protection
Center said it was notified of the virus Friday and has
 received reports of
``significant network degradation and e-mail outages'' at
major
 corporations
 and Internet service providers.

The virus uses a high-powered automation technology built into
 most personal
computers, and a simple, personal touch, to propagate itself.

Often disguised as a message from a friend or colleague,
 Melissa is a simple
e-mail sent to unsuspecting users, saying ''Important message
 from'' But
when users open the message, it can cause a flood of new
 e-mails to be sent
over the Internet from the reader's own online address book.

 Clicking on the e-mail triggers a powerful ``macro'' --
 automation software
built into millions of computers using Microsoft's Windows
 operating system --
that can automatically trigger up to 50 new e-mails.

In many cases, computer users are warned of the presence of
the
 automated
messaging, but the virus de-activates the warning system for
 some computers,
 making it harder to detect.

The virus appeared not to have caused any significant damage
to
 computers,
although it flooded some e-mail services and exposed a
weakness
 that future
 hackers could exploit more maliciously.

Indeed, Network Associates said a more damaging virus,
 code-named ``Papa'',
had already cropped up Monday. It was a more elaborate program
 using a similar
e-mail delivery of a macro that could disrupt Excel
 spreadsheets.

The biggest impact, though, appeared to come from a temporary
 shutdown of
computer systems by cautious computer managers trying to keep
 their systems
from being overwhelmed. Computer experts said it was also
 possible that other
confidential documents could be sent inadvertently, though
 Network Associates
 knew of no such cases.

``A number of our large customers have had to take their
 servers down and for
a lot of companies e-mail is the main method of
 communications,'' said Network
Associates's Viveros. ''Having that down has caused lots of
 havoc.''

At Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University, the Computer
 Emergency Response
 Team received scores of inquiries.

``We are getting a steady stream of phone calls this morning
 from
organizations who have been affected by the virus,'' Jeff
 Carpenter at CERT
 said Monday.

CERT estimated the bug affected more than 100,000 machines.
 Carpenter said
more than 150 companies had complained about Melissa.

The virus comes in the form of a document that lists
 pornography sites on the
Internet's World Wide Web of computer networks.

One office worker in Austin, Texas, Jennifer Mehlow, said she
 got a message
that appeared to be from a colleague in the company. But when
 she saw the list
of porn sites, she reported it to her computer system manager.
 By then, the
macro had been triggered, sending scores of messages over the
 Internet.

``I came in this morning and I had 213 nasty e-mails attacking
 me,'' said
Mehlow, a press relations specialist at Fleishman-Hillard in
 Austin.

Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - news) the world's largest
telecommunications equipment maker, Friday received a copy of
 the tainted
note. It shut its e-mail system for the weekend in

OK, then. What purpose did Divine serve in pointing out the
 "correct"

 she should
have a point behind WHY she is being picky. One good pick
deserves another, I say. Also, I think YOU should read things

It was Robert Wilensky's version of the quote, which was made

As for picking someone up over the use of the word 'mute'

I did understand what Divine was TRYING to say, and it did
 impede
my reading enjoyment. If Divine is allowed to pick apart an
 obviously
good-natured, humorous quote offered for the enjoyment of
 everyone,
why can't I get picky about her response? In fact, that sort
of

As for how I spend my time in becoming bitter and twisted,
 well, that's
my business. But I am glad you see the sunny side of my

So many people miss it, you know. ;-)

Most significantly, are you suggesting that Shakespeare wrote
in the correct language of the day, didn't invent his own
 words
and definitions, and didn't generally mess around with the
 language
 to suit his own ends?

Of course he did. That was part of my point. Remember what I
 wrote
about creative language use? Do you think Divine was trying
out
 a new,
innovative language technique on us? She obviously just
screwed
 up.
Shakespeare had to be linguistically talented to be able to
 write as he
did. Going beyond the conventions of any art first requires a
 strong base
in those conventions. This is true for poetry, painting, and
 literature of any
sort. Picasso had to begin with painting bowls of fruit before
 moving on to
cubism. Otherwise, the common man's assertion that Picasso's
expressions are no more than a child's finger painting might
be
 seen
 as having some validity.

Certainly there's no end of *that* going on on the net...

Yes, but is most of it out of ignorance or artistry? That's
the
 fundamental
 question.

I guess you put me in my place !

 NOT.

 Have a nice day,

My original message consisted of the following quote:

"We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards
 could
produce the Complete Works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the
Internet, we know this is not true."

   --Robert Wilensky

First of all, the quote begins "We've heard that..." Then it
 continues by
giving the entire original quote (which you repeat in your
 reply). Why
do you have to point out the original quote to us again as if
I
 somehow
made a mistake and quoted it wrong? Hello? Hello? It was an
obvious, humorous play on the old, familiar, original quote.

This is the first example which proves my point. Monkeys (or
 the
majority of the frantic masses on A.O.L., if you prefer the
 simpler,
literal translation) don't write Shakespeare (a figurative
 reference to all
 great literature and art of the past, present, and future;
this
 doesn't just
refer to Shakespeare's plays, which may or may not be on the
 internet;
Hello?). Here's the proof of my point just in case you
couldn't
 glean it
from what I've written so far: If someone cannot understand
 such a
simple literary convention as parody without trying to impose
a
 very
mundane, banal, overly-simplistic interpretation upon it, how
 can they
write anything akin to the true artistry, quality, and
 true-to-life spirit of
the classics? In other, more figurative, words, monkeys don't
 write
 Shakespeare. Hello?

The second example proving my point is contained in a line of
 your
 reply:

guess it's a mute point since Shakespeare has already been
 produced...

Shakespeare may have already been produced, but if you want
to
produce anything comparable, it seems you may need a good
proof-reader. I can excuse incorrect spellings; after all, we
 all make careless
mistakes. However, one should not try to use words with which
 they are
unfamiliar. Anyone out there remember Norm Crosby? The word
 MUTE is
most often defined as: the inability or lack of desire to
 speak. The word I
think you meant to use was MOOT, most often defined as: open
 for discussion
or debate, as in a moot point. The old spell checker wouldn't
 catch that one.
It required the gray matter grammatic/syntactic checker. An
 acute awareness
of word use, conventions, multiple meanings both literal and
 figurative, and
placement within the context of a sentence and/or paragraph in
 order to
construct the desired meaning plays a significant role in the
production of great literature. Alternate meanings, puns,
allusions, etc. all add depth to writing,
allowing a reader to skim as shallowly or plunge as deeply as
 they may desire.
Once again, we see the point of Mr. Wilensky's quote proven:
if
 you try to dive in
to a lot of what you read on the internet, you're bound to hit
your head on a rocky, shallow bottom sooner or later (this,
however, is not typical of most of the fine
 writings found at CTRL).
And now, I will be MUTE on the suject.

Warning Issued For Fast-Spreading Computer Virus

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A new fast-spreading computer virus could
 spread
havoc Monday after already forcing several large U.S.
 corporations
to shut down their e-mail systems, the New York Times reported
 Sunday.

The virus, which is named Melissa and is spread by e-mail, may
 have
infected tens of thousands of home and business computers
 Friday, the
Times reported quoting network security companies.

The virus replicates itself by going into the address book of
 the computer's
user and e-mailing itself to 50 addresses -- eventually
 overloading
network systems to the point where they must be shut down. It
 does not
appear to harm or disable the computers, the experts told the
 Times.

E-mail infected with the virus has a topic line which begins
 ``important
message from'' followed by the name of the person whose
 computer
address book inadvertently provided the recipient's e-mail
 address.

That is followed by the seemingly innocuous message: ``Here is
 that
document you asked for ... don't show it to anyone else''. A
 massive 40K
document called list.doc is attached, the paper said.

While opening the e-mail is harmless, opening the attachment
 unleashes
the virus. It seeks out 50 addresses in the recipient's
address
 book,
sends itself off, and the whole process begins again.

The two e-mail programs most likely to be affected were
 Microsoft Outlook
and its slimmed down cousin, Microsoft Outlook Express, the
 newspaper said.

Eric Allman, a co-founder of Sendmail, told the Times that he
 was
concerned that the problem would worsen Monday morning when
 employees
find the messages in their e-mail in-boxes.

``This will get into a lot of mail boxes and lay dormant,'' he
 said. ``When
employees come in at 8 a.m. and read these messages, it will
 cause
an explosive growth of the virus.''

Allman described the virus as ``not the worst I'd seen, but
 it's pretty bad.''

The virus brought the e-mail system to a halt Friday at the
GCI
 Group, a
public relations firm with offices nationwide.

Leigh Anne Varney said she got more than 500 messages over the
 course
of the day. ``I've never had this happen before.''

hopefully will become adequately able should the need arrive .
Have stocked up on the necessaties though just in case as it is
rather limiting where I live , out in the desert , as nothing
grows here except sagebrush , you have to buy dirt .
On the Kevorikian thing , I don't want to get to deep in
the fray as I do not believe in doctors of any kind for religious
and intellectual reasons and I don't want to argue about it .

in ways I will use any way if left to my own wishes.

To the subject at hand, let me say that I must agree that this
 is not
the way to deal with this problem. I stated earlier that
pain
 in this
country is so under-medicated and undertreated as to be a
 scandal. Many
would not want to die if they were not in agony. Also, this
is
 illegal
and makes all parties commit crimes. Apart from that, I
 fee/think, it
cheapens human life the same way abortions do. We can "put
 down" people
 the way we do animals.
We can withhold herioc life-support and give them enough
 medication.
Drs. are audited on the percentage of Rx they write for
 controlled
 substances versus non-controlled (morphine vs. antibiotic;
 amphetamine
vs. antihistamine as examples) and they are paraniod abog
 accused of
causing someone to become a drug addict. Many people with
 adequate meds
woun't want to die. They want to escape the hell in which
they
 are
forced to live. Dr. Jack does get a certain gleam i his eye
 about
 this.

Also to the one who calls himself "Dr." whatever happened to
 "First, do
no harm."? Even the most liberal translation of helping take
 away life
from someone with/without their permission still equals harm
in
 the most
 extreme.

I babble on. You guys sound very bright, sharp and most
 importantly,
informed. I will enjoy reading your postings greatly and am
 impressed
that each of you have done your research. That is a must for

 done. I
shall benefit from yours if you wil allow me.

No Problem :-) , I get rather passionate in my response to

the propaganda machine , lately I can barely keep from screaming
every time one of the talking heads comes on a spouts out their
rhetoric and just plain lies in regard to the Kosovo crisis .

CALL TO ACTION - Pertaining to TREASON Allegations

 Various FR Posters

THIS IS THREAD 2 OF A FREEPER CALL TO ACTION!!!

While the bombs are falling in Kosovo --- something VERY IMPORTANT is
happening in Congress. The Senate Intelligence Committee has launched a
formal
investigation, and the House is seeking to release the Cox Committee report.

To make sure nothing is lost in a "wag the dog" shell game - we need to make
sure our elected officials know that WE ARE WATCHING everything pertaining to
 vital National Security issues.

On the Downside Legacy we have about 120 pages in Timelines pertaining to all
the treason allegations. This timeline is unique to Freepers and Lurkers –
because it is a consolidation of information from the myriad Freeper sources.
It gives a forest view of what is behind the treason allegations.

The timelines are very damning because they frequently pull together facts
for
the first time – facts that may look innocent individually but laid side by
side raise all kinds of red flags to the reader. The timelines are backed by
volumes of detail in the Downside Legacy and all over the Free Republic
 archives.

Please read the timelines and if you agree, and if you have a printer and
especially if one of the Committee members represents your state …. Please
print out all or a portion of the Timeline and send a letter, email, or
 whatever to express your point-of-view.

And please leave a note here so we’ll know which officials have been put on
 notice!

Senate Intelligence Committee launched a formal investigation into

that China stole secrets from US nuclear weapons research labs and how the
case was handled by the US government.

Reuters 3/26/99 "…The Senate Intelligence Committee launched a formal
investigation Thursday into allegations that China stole secrets from U.S.
nuclear weapons research laboratories and how the case was handled by the
U.S.
government. "This problem could be more serious, more widespread and
potentially more dangerous than most Americans realize,'' said Senate
Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Shelby….. In the House of
Representatives, a special committee that investigated the transfer of U.S.
technology to China and completed its report at the end of last year was
given
another month to make its findings public. That committee, chaired by
California Republican Rep. Christopher Cox, has been negotiating with the
White House over which parts of the report can be made public and which
should
be kept classified. The committee was scheduled to go out of existence at the
end of March, but the House has authorized a one-month extension to the end
of
April. "We continue to negotiate with the White House,'' said Brent Bahler,
spokesman for the House panel. As a result of the extension, "we don't have
the imminent pressure of next week running out of time,'' he said. ….Senate
Armed Services Committee Chairman John Warner sent a letter to Energy
Secretary Bill Richardson saying required reports had not been submitted to
Congress on the status of security at national nuclear weapons facilities.
Warner gave Richardson 30 days to produce them…."

Hi Mark .
I just watched the replay of the press conference on CNN a few minutes ago
, sorry I don't know whom the gentleman is that you are speaking of . In general
though I found it rather repetitive as though if he only said the same BS enough
times it would somehow become true . I did think however that it was rather
interesting to note that whenever anyone tried to ask anything in regard to
nuclear bombs he would repond that he was not there to answer every rhetorical
question of what might happen .

Epona ,

As I agree with your quote from TDR I am not sure which point it is that
I made of which you can not believe I am serious about and therefore do not know
how to respond . In regard to the US being a " super power " again that depends
on the scope of your meaning . In regard to nucleur power aka military power
capabilities that is most definitely not true . Which I pray will not be proven
first hard . In regard to monetery strength that may very well be true ,
unfortunately the wealth is primarily distributed to the elite top 5% who has
absolutely no interest in the benefit of the populice so long as there is
someone around to do there dirty work for them and of course work themselves
into the ground for crumbs in order to make them richer and hence more powerful
.
In an overall scope I believe that the Super Power lies not with ANY
government open the face of the earth but upon a higher being from which I
personally believe is the source of " the Golden hopes of men "

 New target: Milosevic

NATO has threatened to target President Slobodan Milosevic and his military
commanders after the Yugoslav leader defiantly ordered his forces in Kosovo
to continue their brutal campaign against ethnic Albanian separatists.

A second and bigger wave of missile and bomb attacks on Serb targets was
accompanied by escalating threats from both sides, with NATO indicating
that it was prepared to fight until Milosevic's military structures were
 destroyed.

NATO's supreme commander, General Wesley Clark, said there would be "no
sanctuary" for Milosevic or his military leaders and that NATO was ready to
 destroy the Yugoslav Army.

The United States Vice-President, Mr Al Gore, also raised the political
stakes, saying Milosevic had "blood dripping from his hands" from
 "murdering his own people".

This heightened political rhetoric suggests that the US goal now is to
force Milosevic from power and bring him to account for years of military
 atrocities.

As the threats intensified, B-52 bombers were preparing to take off from
their base at Fairford in England to spearhead a third wave of bombing, a
 US Air Force spokesman said.

PictureBut the prospect of a longer, more intense conflict is testing
NATO unity and putting increasing domestic political pressure on alliance
 governments.

Italy, which is critical to the operation because most aircraft involved
are flying from its bases, indicated at a meeting of European leaders in
Berlin that it wanted a quick end to the operation.

British newspapers have reported that both Italy and Greece have cast doubt
 on continuing the bombing campaign.

As well, Russia is a fierce critic of the air strikes, and the official
China Daily newspaper has called the campaign "blatant aggression" and a
 barbarity.

Hopes that Milosevic would back down and agree to a Kosovo peace plan
receded further when Yugoslavia announced that it was severing diplomatic
relations with the US, Britain, France and Germany.

This came as protesters attacked Western embassies and representative
offices in neighbouring Macedonia and Bosnia, and in Moscow and Canada.

NATO's initial military objective had been to limit Milosevic's capacity to
 continue his Kosovo security operations.

PictureBut it has hardened its position amid reports of renewed fighting
in Kosovo and declarations by Serb leaders that they would continue to try
to destroy the ethnic Albanian separatist movement and would never
 surrender to NATO military force.

The Serbs claimed that the rebel Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) had used the
cover of the NATO air strikes to step up attacks on government forces.

But a spokesman for the KLA in London, Pleurat Sejeu, told the BBC that
Yugoslav MiGjets were being used against ethnic Albanians.

He said Serb forces had rounded up thousands of displaced ethnic Albanian
civilians in the central Drenica region and were marching them towards
 Pristina.

NATO's second wave of attacks - cruise missiles fired from warships and
laser-guided bombs from nearly 70 aircraft - appeared to be directed more
at targets in Kosovo, although targets throughout Yugoslavia were also hit.

Western officials dismissed comments from Yugoslavia's Deputy Prime
Minister, Mr Vuk Draskovic, suggesting that military operations in Kosovo
could be stopped if the NATO bombing ended.

One NATO diplomat said: "We have seen absolutely nothing from Milosevic to
encourage us to believe that he is ready to back down. On the contrary, he
is marshalling his forces for a long fight."

There was also concern that the conflict was feeding tensions in
 neighbouring

Hello to MsCountryLady ,

Thank You so much for forwarding these
letters to us from Sasa . I have sent him e-mail
wishing him and his country safety and forwarded
reports regarding the protests here in the US against
the NATO strikes .
It is a rare opportunity for this madness
to become a "real " event instead of the usual surreal
war game mentality and it's accompanying non attachment
to reality .
