HEADSUP: Need maintainer for uw-imap

2008-03-07 Thread Corinna Vinschen
Hi,

we need a new maintainer for the orphaned uw-imap package. It still
uses openssl097 as the only package left. Since openssl097 is
depreacted for a long time, and since there has been found a security
problem (buffer overflow) in 0.9.7 lately, I will pull the openssl097
package in a week. If uw-imap has no new maintainer until that time,
I will remove it from the distro, too.

But the flags are not O_RDONLY|O_CREAT. They are
O_WRONLY|O_CREAT.

I still think Linux is wrong - t/ is not an existing directory, so
you can't
claim that an attempt was made to open an existing directory with
O_WRONLY.
But I guess it is a bit ambiguous, since if t/ did exist, then
opening t/.
should indeed fail with EISDIR; at any rate, it is certainly more
efficient to
blindly reject O_WRONLY due to the trailing slash without even
checking for the
   existence of t.

In our case I added a special case to emit EISDIR, otherwise we
would
get ENOENT automatically (that's what STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_INVALID
gets
converted to). However, I'm somewhat puzzled that you used that
bash
  example:

$ :  t/
bash: t/: Is a directory.

If what you said is right, and if I revert the change to
fhandler.cc,
we would get a ENOENT in that case, too. And given your arguments,
  that should be correct.

  Do you agree?

I should add that I'm still rather leaning towards the Linux
behaviour.
I tested this on Solaris 10, and it behaves again different. In both
 examples open(2) returns with ENOTDIR.

And for what it's worth, on AIX 5.3 they succeed:

open(t/, O_WRONLY|O_CREAT|O_LARGEFILE)= 3
open(t/, O_RDONLY|O_CREAT|O_LARGEFILE)= 3

But:
open(t/., O_WRONLY|O_CREAT|O_LARGEFILE) Err#2 ENOENT
open(t/., O_RDONLY|O_CREAT|O_LARGEFILE) Err#2 ENOENT

And so they do on Solaris 8:

open64(t/, O_WRONLY|O_CREAT|O_LARGEFILE, 0666) = 3
open64(t/, O_RDONLY|O_CREAT|O_LARGEFILE, 0666) = 3

open64(t/., O_WRONLY|O_CREAT|O_LARGEFILE, 0666) Err#2 ENOENT
open64(t/., O_RDONLY|O_CREAT|O_LARGEFILE, 0666) Err#2 ENOENT

So it's the same on both OS and Linux is different.

It is not trivial to draw the line between what is normal (or must be
accepted) and what is weird and should be fixed...

Esp. when you first do something in a network drive, and have installed
cygwin 'for yourself' without admin rights, then reinstall cygwin 'for

Ouchie. Alas, I can't promise you that uninstalling it will solve the
underlying problem that you have to deal with here, only that it's worth
 considering.

Guess whether I have the right to do that.
All of this is buried under a deep layer of opaque wrappers installed
semi-automatically. This doesn't make it simple to follow...

Given that it probably takes somewhere between 30 minutes and
an hour to uninstall, reboot, test, and then reinstall if necessary, it's up
to you to decide when that becomes more worth while than trying other
 things!

Thanks!

For now, I decided to give a try to TWiki without mod_perl, and to

The reason I do this on cygwin on my laptop, is that my IT support won't
grant me sudo access to the Solaris box on my desk...

Apache 2.2.6 building from source code

2008-03-07 Thread Anik Pal
Hello all,
I'm trying to build apache from source code downloaded from cygwin mirror
site. I am following the sequence listed in apache2-2.2.6-1.sh for
building the source code. But it looks like it place the build binary of
apache in the default location, I want it to build and place the binary in
the my defined location.
I know in the unix set up
%Configure --prefix=Traget_directory
you can direct it to place the binary. But as I'm not directly running
configure rather running
% apache2-2.2.6-1.sh conf (hope it will apply cygwin specific patches)
so I can't input the prefix target directory.

So what changes to be required to redirect the binary in my defined
location?
Regards

Anik Pal

HEADSUP: Need maintainer for uw-imap

2008-03-07 Thread Corinna Vinschen
Hi,

we need a new maintainer for the orphaned uw-imap package. It still
uses openssl097 as the only package left. Since openssl097 is
depreacted for a long time, and since there has been found a security
problem (buffer overflow) in 0.9.7 lately, I will pull the openssl097
package in a week. If uw-imap has no new maintainer until that time,
I will remove it from the distro, too.

Windows doesn't allow users and groups with the same name. Cygwin does
in a virtual kind of way. For instance, create a user bin and a group
bin-grp. Let's assume they have the following SIDs:

  S-1-5-21-9-8-7-1011 user bin
  S-1-5-21-9-8-7-1012 group bin-grp

Create passwd and group entries:

  $ mkpasswd -l -u bin  /etc/passwd
  $ grep '^bin:' /etc/passwd

bin:unused_by_nt/2000/xp:1011:513:U-YOUR_PC\bin,S-1-5-21-9-8-7-1011:/home/bin:/bin/bash
  $ mkgroup -l -g bin-grp  /etc/group
  $ grep '^bin-grp:' /etc/group
  bin-grp:S-1-5-21-9-8-7-1012:1012:

Then edit /etc/passwd so that the primary group for bin is 1012 and
edit /etc/group so that bin-grp is called bin:

  $ grep '^bin:' /etc/passwd

bin:unused_by_nt/2000/xp:1011:1012:U-YOUR_PC\bin,S-1-5-21-9-8-7-1011:/home/bin:/bin/bash
  $ grep '^bin-grp:' /etc/group
  bin:S-1-5-21-9-8-7-1012:1012:

Just edit apache2-2.2.6-1.sh and find where it runs configure, you can
edit the --prefix setting there. It's in the conf() shell function
definition, around line 197.

Missing DLL? What does cygcheck `which gm.exe` show?
 Ah hah, thanks.

 $ cygcheck `which gm.exe` | grep Error
 Error: could not find cygdpstk-1.dll

 http://cygwin.com/cgi-bin2/package-grep.cgi?grep=cygdpstk-1.dll seems to
show
that that DLL was last present in xorg-x11-bin-dlls-6.8.2.0-1, while I
have
 version 6.8.99.901-1 installed.

The picture becomes clearer. The maintainer for this package is listed as
Harold Hunt, who's moved on. Upstream is now at version 1.1.11--
GraphicsMagick
hasn't been updated for Cygwin in several years.

So it seems that GraphicsMagick is looking for a Cygwin maintainer. I'd
consider taking it on, but since we do have ImageMagick I guess the
priority is
 low.

convert -list Format

from ImageMagick coredumps for me. Can anybody else check ?

By the way

gm convert -list Format

from GraphicsMagick works fine.

 Thanks,
 Andrew.

Interesting. I also seem to have cygdpstk-1.dll on my system, but
cygcheck -f /usr/X11R6/bin/cygdpstk-1.dll returns nothing.

I know a new release of the X packages has been built since we've lost the
X maintainer, and a few patches have been omitted from it (in particular,
one that fixed building font directories on text mounts). It's probably a
matter of getting a new X maintainer and having him or her rebuild the
package yet again to also include cygdpstk-1.dll.

I doubt there's anything the GraphicsMagick maintainer can do, considering
the dependency.

Wrong link and/or packaging error?

For the sake of completeness, I want to flag that /usr/bin contains a
wrong simlink (ls prints it in RED):

/usr/bin/pnmnoraw - pnmtoplainpnm.exe

it should belong to the netpbm package.

Perhaps a post install trouble.

[Patch] cygport: Allow to clear default_excludes

2008-03-07 Thread Christian Franke
The cygport 0.3.8 default_excludes list is not suitable for all
projects, in particular when aclocal.m4 is used in a non-automake
project like bash (http://sourceware.org/ml/cygwin/2007-03/msg00613.html).

With the attached, the default_excludes list is cleared when when
DIFF_EXCLUDES starts with '!' (Syntax borrowed from .cvsignore ;-)

Then all necessary excludes except CYGWIN-PATCHES must be specified, e.g:

DIFF_EXCLUDES=! config.* install-sh missing ...

The patch also adds a missing blank for DIFF_EXCLUDES=-x foo

Wow, that's great. Here I am being a pain about it, and it looks like
it's getting close to landing. I just want to say that I appreciate
all of your hard work on cygwin. I don't think I could use Windows
without it! :)

Re: util-linux package incomplete?

According to Angelo Graziosi on 3/7/2008 10:48 AM:
| Running 'cygcheck -cv' says that util-linux package is incomplete:
|
| Missing file: /usr/bin/logger.exe from package util-linux
| util-linux 2.13.1-1 Incomplete
|
| Since I have read some discussion on cygwin-apps list regarding this
| package, should one reinstall it or wait for an update?

This is due to multiple packages providing the same file (at least at one
point in time). If package A used to provide a file, but package B now
does, but you don't upgrade A until after B, then the upgrade of A will
delete the file. At any rate, the fix is the same - rerun setup.exe, and
reinstall anything that shows up as incomplete.
