Try to upgrade dt to the latest stable version (2.4.1).
dt 2.2.1 is the current version available on the Stretch repo. Even if
you take the stretch-backport version you will only get 2.2.5. With dt
it's always better to use the current release. Compile it from the

I have tried all sorts of locales including LC_TIME, LANG etc... to no
avail.
With LC_TIME=C date is still displayed as *Sat 06/21/14 19:42:53* while
the date format used in the "Collect Images" view uses *:mm:dd* as
format. Just a bit confusing to me.

You can have it formatted differently like this:
LC_TIME=C darktable
However, that will not show the raw Exif string either.
