That is for the graphics card acceleration code.
I think you ran darktable in the past with some wrong settings, as the
path should not have a '-d' in it, and the cache directory shouldn't
be under C:\Program Files, anyway (it should be in your profile). This
is indicated by the error message, too.
'--cachedir C:\Program Files\anything' is just wrong.

Maybe darktable was working fine without any of the magic switches,
and simply your 'collect images' module is set wrong on the left side
of the screen? Try clicking the 'reset parameters' button (the 'on-off
switch' close to the right-hand-side, next to the 'hamburger menu') of
the module.

Re: [darktable-user] Windows darktable V 3.2.1 - does not load/import lightable files or folder

2020-08-11 Thread Ross Tucker
Hi Harald:

Thanks for the tip!

I tried to use it but it still didn't work - still no lighttable import.
When I click on any of the left side window panes:
- import
- collect images
- recently used collections
and try to select something, nothing happens.
When I try to import a directory which has a lot of photo's in it, the
Windows darktable icon on the bottom of the monitor shows a progress bar as
part of the icon. Something is definitely happening in the background, but
nothing ever shows up in the lighttable image collection area.

Thanks for pointing me to darktable command line parameters. Tried the one
you suggested, with no apparent luck. Not sure where my cache folder is
supposed to reside (yet).
Ran the cache generating command line feature and it ran for quite a while
(1.1.3. darktable-generate-cache binary) but still nothing shows up in the
lighttable  area.
I did find a cache related directory at:
C:\Program Files\darktable\bin\-d\cached_kernels_for_GeForceGTX970_44187
which has 31 files in it ranging from a low of 6 kB to a high of 439 kB.
I then ran a variant of your suggestion:
darktable --cachedir C:\Program
Files\darktable\bin\-d\cached_kernels_for_GeForceGTX970_44187  -d lua -d
opencl -d perf -d sql
which then gives me the error message of:

[image: image.png]

changed the command line to:
C:\Program Files\darktable\bin>darktable  --cachedir
.\-d\cached_kernels_for_GeForceGTX970_44187   -d lua   -d opencl   -d perf
 -d sql
and it ran without an error message but without any different results. It
generated a subfolder in the cache folder "-d" and basically repeated all
the same files in it.

As I mentioned earlier, I can RMB on a file using Windows Explorer and
choose to open with darktable, but none of the files ever show up in the
lighttable view.

Not sure what next to try.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

Sincerely

Ross Tucker

Made a very strange discovery. If I remove my darktablerc file and
starts darktable without any darktablerc file everything works as it
should. When I close darktable it automatically generates a darktablerc
file which presumably should mean that next time I start darktable it
should behave the same way as it did when I closed it last time but
next time I start darktable it works as described in the bug report!

I find this very weird.

Thanks for the idea, August.

Unfortunately, after adding "-d all" and then finding the log file, it did not
show anything relevant or useful. Only two lines in the 580KB file containing
"error" or "fail" and those were failing to find luarc or darktable.css files.
I doubt if they are relevant.

[darktable-user] Problem report with configuration using darktable 3.2.1

2020-08-11 Thread DougC
Complete newbie to darktable here. I have waited for 3.2 to begin my darktable
experience but have immediately run into problems.

I have installed Darktable 3.2.1 on Windows 10 64-bit using the installer from
darktable.org/install. Fast i7 processor, fast GPU, 64GB RAM, lots of storage
space.

When I first ran it using all defaults and imported some images all looked and
worked fine.

However, I want to keep my images on external, removable storage and I want to
keep the darktable library there also so the library on the external volume
holds all the edits for the images on that volume. This way I can move the
external storage between 3 different computers and always have the latest edits
available.

To test this on my main computer I put images on the external volume N:\2020 in
folders by month and day. I created an empty folder named N:\darktable which is
where I want the library to go.

I then created this command script:
  @echo off

  cd /d "%~dp0"

  start "darktable for %~dp0" darktable --library %~dp0darktable\library.db

When I run it darktable starts I see

  N:\>startdt

  N:\>cd /d "N:\"

  N:\>start "darktable for N:\" darktable --library N:\darktable\library.db

which looks exactly the way it should.

The N:\darktable folder now contains

N:\>dir n:\darktable

 Volume in drive N is P-2020-3A

 Volume Serial Number is D4E5-96D2

 Directory of n:\darktable

08/11/2020  02:00 PM      .

08/11/2020  02:00 PM      ..

08/11/2020  02:00 PM 0 library.db

08/11/2020  02:00 PM 0 library.db-pre-3.2.1

08/11/2020  02:00 PM 6 library.db.lock

   3 File(s)  6 bytes

   2 Dir(s)  53,829,632,000 bytes free

which is also exactly what I expected.

At this point darktable is running and using the library on N:\darktable but
using all other defaults (for data.db and darktablerc).

I can import the same image files as before but now the problem:

When in lighttable, clicking on any star, or X to reject an image, I see the
message popup that says the operation is being done but there is no indication
in the UI that it has. All stars remain hollow. The X remains plain
(unchecked). These operations worked fine when I started darktable with all
defaults. In fact, I can re-start darktable using all defaults and it will
again function correctly.

So the question is, what else do I need to do when starting darktable from my
script to get it to behave when using the library on external media?

CORRECTION: I DID NOT download a G'MIC tarball and compile; I downloaded a
G'MIC *.deb file and installed.

Re: [darktable-user] Darktable 3.2.1

2020-08-11 Thread Top Rock Photography
For LLVM, I installed,
llvm-10-dev
Your system may have it listed as a dependency package,
llvm-dev
depending on the latest version. That being said, my system, (Ubuntu
20.04), has llvm-7-dev, llvm-8-dev, & llvm-9-dev, also installed, (I
suppose they were dependencies of some other development tool I installed).
I also do NOT have llvm-dev installed, but it is available.

For G'MIC, I tried using,
libgmic-2.4.5-1.1
but that did not work. I downloaded the latest (stable) tarball, 2.9.1, and
compiled. That worked.

For libavif, I tried,
libaom-dev (1.0.0)
but that did not work. I downloaded the latest (stabe) version of
libaom/aom-tools, (2.0.0), using git, (https://aomedia.googlesource.com/aom/),
and compiled. Still did not work, BUT, was still necessary.

I then downloaded the latest libavif (0.8.1) using git, (
https://github.com/AOMediaCodec/libavif), and tried to compile. Had
trouble, so this is what I had to do….

   1. Re-compile libaom using these parameters…
   cmake -fPIC -DBUILD_SHARED_LIBS=1 -DENABLE_EXAMPLES=1 -DENABLE_TOOLS=1
   -DCONFIG_AV1_DECODER=1 -DCONFIG_AV1_ENCODER=1 -DCONFIG_LIBYUV=1
   -DCONFIG_WEBM_IO=1 -DCONFIG_MULTITHREAD=1 -DENABLE_DOCS=1 ..
   make [-j6]
   sudo make install
   2. Re-compile libavif using these parameters…
   cmake -fPIC -DBUILD_SHARED_LIBS=1 -DAVIF_CODEC_AOM=1 -D
   -DAVIF_BUILD_EXAMPLES=1 -DAVIF_BUILD_APPS=1 ..
   make [-j6]
   sudo make install
   3. Recompile Darktable according to their recommendations.

No errors on compile, everything now, “works.”

Okay, so saving as an AVIF image takes forever on my old hardware, and I
have no idea how to tell if the resulting files are any good. (I do not
have a viewer with AVIF capabilities, yet). The AVIF libraries are still in
beta. That being said, the encoder apparently does use all my cores when
encoding, and, according to the specs, the decoding ought to be much, much,
much faster. (It takes the time to encode effectively once, so that it can
decode efficiently thousands of times).

That all being said, the lack of these libraries will not stop darktable
from working. LLVM makes the code/execution more efficient. G'MIC adds some
functionality, (cannot recall precisely what at this time), and libavif
allows one to save the final image in the AV1 image file format.

Most people save the final image in JPEG JFIF, (regular ‘JPEG’), or WebP,
and save intermediaries in OpenEXR, (16-bit/32-bit float, industry
standard), TIFF, (16-bit float, 16-bit integer, seems to be universally
readable, but do not bet on it), PNG (16-bit integer, and universally
readable), or XCF (8/16-bit integer, or 32-bit float, GIMP/Krita compatible
image) format for further processing by others, or with other software.

So it can be ‘fixed,’ but does not need to be.

Sincerely,

Karim Hosein

## The Big Ones

- The *lighttable* view has been rewritten and the filmstrip reworked,
resulting in large performance gains, especially when using the
zoomable lighttable view. The culling view has also been rewritten from
scratch. Operations are smooth at any screen resolution up to 8k.

   Many types of overlay are now possible on lighttable thumbs.
   Different overlay information can be selected depending on the thumb
   size on the lighttable. The different sizes can be set in the
   preferences, so we can have no overlay at all for small thumbs and
   full overlay when large thumbs are displayed. This is fully
   configurable.

   Likewise, the tooltip information when hovering the thumbs can be
   activated/deactivated based on the thumbs size.

- The lighttable modules have improved user interaction: buttons are
   highlighted only when the context makes the action possible.

- A complete overhaul of the CSS has been done. This gives
   darktable a professional look. This continues
   the goal to make every single aspect of the UI themable using CSS.

- The Color Picker and
   Location modules are updated to better fit into the new UI, and
   most of the icons have been altered so as to be more
   visually balanced.

- The preference dialog has been fully reviewed and reorganized to
   propose a better look and require less
   scrolling. It is also possible to add some CSS rules directly into
   the preference dialog to tweak darktable's look as well as
   to directly control the font size and DPI values from the general
   preference tab.

   A search field has been added to the shortcuts tab to help you find
   the keyboard shortcut you want to customize.

- The new negadoctor module has been added to help inverting negative
   films.

- A new histogram display called RGB Parade has been added. At the
   same time the histogram module height can now be adjusted with
   Ctrl+Scroll.

- The metadata feature has been made generic internally and has new
   features. The user can now select the information they want to see
   in the metadata editor. This selection is automatically mirrored in
   the collection and image information modules.

   Along with a new "notes" field, all the fields are multiline
   Ctrl+Enter, sizable Ctrl+Scroll and can be set
   as private (not exported). Metadata collection filters have an entry
   "not defined". At import time it is possible to choose not to import
   some metadata.

- Image change detection has been made more reliable. This affects the
   lighttable thumbnails change symbol and history collection filter,
   which is now more accurate. In darkroom navigation, this avoids the
   need to recalculate an image and save the xmp file when there is
   no change.

- A new down-sampling preference has been introduced for faster
   response in darkroom. The preview is either computed at full
   resolution (original, default value) or at 1/2, 1/3 or 1/4 of the
   original size. This allow for better performance but can slightly

just did a Test:

As long as you start with "Original" you can switch to every fixed
aspect ratio and the orientation stays as is (landscape in my case). But
if you once select "free" every fixed aspect ratio you select
_afterwards_ will be 90° rotated - that is portrait in my case.

Hi
Same here. Can be solved by clicking on the "rotate" icon beside the
aspect, this rotates the aspect (not the picture). Not sure if this
happens always, just had it 10 mins ago.
Best regards,
Michael

We're proud to announce the new feature release of darktable, 3.2.1!

Note that 3.2.0 has been skipped due to last minute bug fixes.

The github release is here:
[https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/releases/tag/release-3.2.1](https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/releases/tag/release-3.2.1).

As always, please don't use the autogenerated tarball provided by
github, but only our tar.xz. the checksums are:

```
$ sha256sum darktable-3.2.1.tar.xz
When updating from the current stable 3.0.x series, please bear in
mind that your edits will be preserved during the upgrade, but the new
library and configuration files are not backward compatible; they're
not usable with 3.0.x, so
making a backup is strongly advised.
 Important note: to make sure that darktable can keep supporting
the raw file format from your camera, *please* read [this post](
how/what raw samples you can contribute to ensure that we have the
*full* raw sample set for your camera under CC0 license!
## The Big Ones
- The *lighttable* view has been rewritten and the filmstrip reworked,
resulting in large performance gains, especially when using the
zoomable lighttable view. The culling view has also been rewritten from
scratch. Operations are smooth at any screen resolution up to 8k.
   Many types of overlay are now possible on lighttable thumbs.
   Different overlay information can be selected depending on the thumb
   size on the lighttable. The different sizes can be set in the
   preferences, so we can have no overlay at all for small thumbs and
   full overlay when large thumbs are displayed. This is fully
   configurable.
   Likewise, the tooltip information when hovering the thumbs can be
   activated/deactivated based on the thumbs size.
- The lighttable modules have improved user interaction: buttons are
   highlighted only when the context makes the action possible.
- A complete overhaul of the CSS has been done. This gives
   darktable a professional look. This continues
   the goal to make every single aspect of the UI themable using CSS.
- The Color Picker and
   Location modules are updated to better fit into the new UI, and
   most of the icons have been altered so as to be more
   visually balanced.
- The preference dialog has been fully reviewed and reorganized to
   propose a better look and require less
   scrolling. It is also possible to add some CSS rules directly into
   the preference dialog to tweak darktable's look as well as
   to directly control the font size and DPI values from the general
   preference tab.
   A search field has been added to the shortcuts tab to help you find
   the keyboard shortcut you want to customize.
- The new negadoctor module has been added to help inverting negative
   films.
- A new histogram display called RGB Parade has been added. At the
   same time the histogram module height can now be adjusted with
   Ctrl+Scroll.
- The metadata feature has been made generic internally and has new
   features. The user can now select the information they want to see
   in the metadata editor. This selection is automatically mirrored in
   the collection and image information modules.
   Along with a new "notes" field, all the fields are multiline
   Ctrl+Enter, sizable Ctrl+Scroll and can be set
   as private (not exported). Metadata collection filters have an entry
   "not defined". At import time it is possible to choose not to import
   some metadata.
- Image change detection has been made more reliable. This affects the
   lighttable thumbnails change symbol and history collection filter,
   which is now more accurate. In darkroom navigation, this avoids the
   need to recalculate an image and save the xmp file when there is
   no change.
- A new down-sampling preference has been introduced for faster
   response in darkroom. The preview is either computed at full
   resolution (original, default value) or at 1/2, 1/3 or 1/4 of the
   original size. This allow for better performance but can slightly
   hinder the precision of the guided filter masking.
   Note that this is a very delicate feature to implement. A lot of
   care has been taken to ensure all is correct when using down
   sampling. It touches all areas of darktable, like masks, guided
   filter, liquify controls, crop & rotate, lens and perspective
   corrections...
2020-08-11 Thread Miklós Müller
Hello,
I just compiled 3.2.1 and noticed that aspect selection does not work
correctly (except for freehand and square). The aspect is selected but for
the wrong orientation. So when I select "original image" for a landscape
image, a portrait crop selection pops up.
Did others notice this too, or is it just something wrong with my
configuration? I tried to rotate my image with the orientation tool to see
if that makes any difference, but the same problem occurs with a rotated
image too.
Re: [darktable-user] Windows darktable V 3.2.1 - does not load/import lightable files or folder
2020-08-11 Thread Harald
Hi Ross,
I recommend using a start option to enable debugging mode to help better
understand what is really going on here...
For example I start darktable like this :
c:/tools/.../darktable/bin/darktable --cachedir c:/... _-d_ lua -d
opencl -d perf
You don't need to join the darktable organisation: you only need a
github account and raise an issue.
Re: [darktable-user] Windows darktable V 3.2.1 - does not load/import lightable files or folder
2020-08-11 Thread Ross Tucker
Hi Terry:
I uninstalled  darktable  with their uninstaller.
downloaded the 64 bit pgm file again.
reinstalled again.
tried again.
still NG.
Something is stubbornly refusing to let  darktable  import folders.
I have let it import jpgs (I have RAW & JPG) plus I let it recurse
directories, but still NG.
Tried editing a bit and that seems to work as before, but lighttable is
still a no-go for me at the moment.
I can still access files by opening them from windows explorer, but of
course I lose all the features (tagging, stars, colour tags, etc.) from
lighttable.
Glad it's working for you though.
