Lens Model was set to "generic". Switching to "specific" sets it to 1.00 and
then aspect ratio fits as far as I can see. If not, this is the place for
adjusting it.

Thanks a lot, solved! :-)

When I use this module most times X/Y ratio does not look correct. E.g.
squares are not squares and circles look like an ellipse.
Is there a way to scale aspect ratio?

Hi,

is there a way to mass import files into darktable's library from the
command line?

I have a directory hierarchy with lots of pictures and I want the
thumbnails created en masse once so that I don't have to wait while
opening one of the folders.

Selecting each folder from the UI and waiting for the thumbnails to be
created, then importing the next one, wait again, and so on is rather
time consuming. So I'd rather do it in the background and do something
else while that job is running.

Cheers,

Hi Andrew,

I'm not a dt dev and I'm not a pro user, just my thoughts:

Is your workflow basically: RAW --> Converter/RAW processor (like dt) --> JPEG --> special software for e.g. stitching?

1.: Why don't you use the lens correction? Imho that should correct all lens distortions. It should be even possible to adjust for your lens.

2.: I dt GUI you can adjust one file and apply everything to all other files.

3.: How is "better" measured? Is it how good your special software can match overlapping parts of these pictures?

First, I'm a geologist, not a photographer, and while I may be close to expert at specialized aspects of photogrammetry, I am by no means expert at image processing or programming, though I have been tinkering extensively with both for more than 20 years. I know there are some great experts using darktable who could probably do much better than me, and I would dearly love any guidance anyone is willing to provide.

I did 91 different conversions from ARW or DNG to JPG or TIFF using a set of 120 highly overlapping aerial photos taken with a Sony A6R, and 30 conversions of a set of 1000 highly overlapping photos with the same camera. The goal was to maximize automated feature matching between photos for aligning and 3D reconstruction.

Affinity Photo JPGs performed "best", followed by Capture One, followed by the DNG, followed by sometimes darktable or openimageio depending on settings. In the few JPEG to TIFF output comparisons I did with identical processing settings, the difference wasn't significant. There may be a slight speed advantage when processing TIFFs (after rock conversion, not during), arguably offset by the storage penalty.

I could not identify exactly what steps made the best conversion, but I think it was a combination of demosaicing, histogram stretching/curves, and tone mapping/colorspace conversion. Based on relative performance differences when I tried to turn everything off in each piece of software (when possible) some fundamental (low-level) differences in raw post-processing approaches by the different software sppear to be the most significant.

Probably some of my limitations with the latter two were due to my ignorance and inexperience, but I tried hard particularly with dark table, to prove that assumption wrong.

Affinity photo produced point clouds with about 5-10% more matches and identical to slightly better accuracy than the DNG. Capture One ranged from slightly worse to at most 5% more matches than the DNG, with basically identical accuracy to the DNG. Using darktable with auto adjust only settings, or fixed settings (linear or gamma, base curve or no base curve), I was not able to get performance better than the DNG in both the 120 and 1000 image sets. The only time I could match or exceed DNG in the 120 image set was with settings that weren't truly fixed,And I don't think there was enough variability in the photos to truly represent "good"dark table did because this fell apart when I applied those methods to the larger photo set.

In contrast, affinity one beta in batch mode using default settings still beat the DNG by about 5% and was consistent in both photo sets. Capture one with auto levels adjustment only and the standard Sony A7R base curve also beat the DNG by about 5%. Both of these require the GUI, but I can automate them with auto hotkey.

JPEG s were saved at 100% quality, with floating point discrete cosine transform and no chroma subsampling where software permitted. The few tiffs I generated were saved in 8-bit LZW compression.

All of my post-processing tried to work primarily with raw processors, colorspaces, levels, exposure, tones, and base curves and used identical photo matching settings after the raw processing step. I didn't do any denoising, sharpening, lens correction, chromatic aberration correction, etc. Basically I was trying to minimize how much I did to the raw pixel data before processing with specialized software, and maximize the probability of getting photo to photo tie point matches, much like hugin/Panorama Tools, but for a specialized photogrammetry application made by Agisoft called Metashape (similar to PIX4D but with more knobs and dials), using an image processing technique called structure-from-motion, derived from computer vision work. Primarily we use these images to measure topographic change on rivers and coasts, but others do similar things with CGI, models for 3D printing, historic preservation, etc

Probably 70% of the conversions were using

what you see is a combination of what your eyes detect and what your brain processes from that. And the history of that. And a lot more. So your brain is a kind of raw processor for your eyes. And a very good one. With some weird limitations.

I've always been slightly annoyed with the tendency to blow out reds into magenta and turn sky a little too cyan, but in general I think Olympus rendering has been pretty good, at least for images which benefit from the "punchy" contrast (some obviously don't). With the original filmic module, I was able to closely match the curve to the camera rending with the help of an IT-8 chart and a few beers. The settings were fairly extreme, which somewhat defeated the purpose of having a default with nice parametric adjustment available... but it was possible.

[... and many others ...]

Hello,

I have been following this thread for some times now, and even the discussions on github.
If I understand correctly, the main complaint against new filmic module is that it does not reproduce the settings that the manufacturers want to force one to use.
A matter of taste, of course, but... for me, jpegs ootb are just forged pictures, lies.
When I look at a photograph that I shot, I would like to see what I could see at the time I shot it. Not what a manufacturer or whosoever wants me to see.
I gave up with darktable Nkon basecurves for a long time. At least 5 years for my D700, for which I could build a profile that let my pictures look more or less like reality. Miles away from what Mr Nikon ought have allowed me to see. I was not able to do the same for my D4s, so I use a neutral profile instead.
I would like to understand the way RGB filmic works, and how not to have to apply it to every single picture.
I could not so far : if I copy the result from a picture to others, it often leads to awful results. So I have to process each picture at a time. A real ordeal.

J.-Luc

Do you want a program converting your pictures to a video file (e.g. mp4 / playback on any device) or a program to show pictures?

There are professional tools which are specialized for this purpose including sync to music, e.g. AquaSoft DiaShow.

If I check my favourite download page, they list currently 118 for "Slideshow":

dt's slideshow works well and is most useful but it does not allow for voice or music to be integrated. There are any number of slideshow-to-video programs out there with fancy transitions but they create massive mp4 files and degrade the images in the process.

Does anybody know of a simple slideshow program with a sound-over option that does not need to go through a video conversion process?

Hi,

that's how I use it currently. For me it's TortoiseHg. But not everybody has a 2nd screen (especially on the road with a laptop). Not every user is familiar with rc systems. And most important (for me) it could be activated by shortcuts. E.g. one for addremove && commit [&& push]. One for init incl. modification of .hgignore.

For me it is not really necessary. But _if_ implemented please not to deep.

Maybe sufficient would be to have some general buttons/shortcuts in a panel which can start external tools?

In any case: not the most important task imho.

@Dusenberg: I suggest to try https://tortoisehg.bitbucket.io/ which is a rc GUI and installs (for Windows at least) the RCS "mercurial" in one go.

All raw file types are there.

That was the first thing I did when I got my Z6 mid-November.

While I fully agree to use lossless compressed NEFs, please upload a sample of all types of NEFs this camera can make so that the camera may be fully supported in future versions.

Use lossless compressed NEFs. Straight uncompressed NEFs
apparently have a twist to the format, but I don't think
they have put much effort into it because everyone uses
lossless compressed.

(I've been using Darktable for Z6 NEF since I got mine in
mid Nov., and 2.6.0 supported it without my needing to
mod the rawspeed lib.)

Hi,

according to https://www.darktable.org/resources/camera-support/ there should be some support for Z6 (maybe in GIT) but https://raw.pixls.us/ says not any sample uploaded. Please upload samples there inkl. all RAW types. Please check Z7 samples as an example. (I wonder why there is no 14 bit sample.)

The problem is, my favorite Rawhandler Darktable can't handle the new NEF files produced by this camera!

Is this something you are looking at???

Aw: [darktable-user] Re: Cannot read Nikon Z7 RAW Files

2018-10-17 Thread Michael Fritze

I guess that Z7 is not yet supported. Uploading RAW samples is a very good idea. Please check what formats they want. I think it is that every bit depth and compression type combination is needed.

I have a small script that checks a folder if dt can process it's raw files. But it is not ready, I hope I can finish it next week.

As a workaround, if you have access to a Mac or Windows Box, you can convert Z7 RAW files to DNG and load this in dt. I think V11 can process Z7 files.

ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/dng/

BR, Micha.

PS: I checked the Z7 last week for the first time and I'm not convinced. I like the idea but it was not comfortable to hold for me. But I hope it will be a success so maybe a later model will fit my expectations :-) Spec-wise and a great camera and high picture quality of course.

Yes, these are real NTFS symlinks made using the MKLINK command (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/administration/windows-commands/mklink).

Aw: [darktable-user] Symlink folder not shown in Windows version

2018-08-23 Thread Michael Fritze

Hi Thomas,

AFAIK Windows does not use filesystem links. Instead it creates a .lnk file wich has to be interpreted by the application.

Hardlinks exist on NTFS but I don't know if "real" softlinks are possible on NTFS.

I organise my photos in symlinked folders pointing to a network location for a multitude of reasons. That means that my pictures are in subfolders beneath a symlink folder called Photos placed in C:\Users\\Pictures.

This works with all my applications except Darktable. It appears that Darktable simply doesn't see the symlink folder.

Version is 2.4.4 on Windows 10.

Hi Eric,

for my camera its only 16 pixels more in each direction so I never touched that.

Can you shoot RAW + JPEG and then reproduce the JPEG framing in DT using the RAW file? Then you can copy this crop to other files as well. Maybe you can put this into a "DT Style".

PS: Please mail to the list, not to me.

It's nice that the additional pixels are available, in case I wanted
to reframe a shot slightly, but should recreating the original framing
require so much effort?

I also tried Lightroom, which gets it right, and RawTherapee, which
totally fails at the lens correction, possibly because it lacks a
profile for this camera...

I have images which can be processed with DT. Problem is to find those because
I have to check each image manually if this opens.
On D5500 there is only RAW 12bit or 14 bit, can't change compression setting.
I use 14 bit because sometimes I need it.
Only thing to try is Adobe RGB (which I use) and sRGB. I'll switch to sRGB if
this changes anything. Should not, but maybe has an impact.

Other cameras: Jean-Luc CECCOLI uploaded one
from his Nikon 1 system. Both NEFs are exactly the same:

On my machine there is also only en error when trying to open the nikon buggy
files. I think this depends on import settings.

Your message looks a bit different.

I have a lot of NEFs with mentioned bug.

This is exactly what I described in my first post from 2018, 07 13th.
However... I realized I only posted a "non displaying correctly" picture.
I ought have posted a "well displaying" one as well.
Pictures nammed DSC_xxx are the ones that were manually copied from the card to the 14.04 system running DT 2.0.7, while pictures nammed with numbers only are the ones transferred and renammed using RPD on the 16.04 computer running DT 2.4.
So, here is one that displays correctly on both the computers :
https://we.tl/AmsWHUHO6D
while the previous one displays skull on DT 2.4 but displays correctly on DT 2.0.

I'm pretty sure that doing the same with the picture in the new archive will not cause the same behaviour.
But it will not tell why DT 2.4 has problems, and why some pictures display different information than others.
Is it a DT problem ?
Is it a Lensfun problem ?
Is it an installation problem ?
How could it be possible to narrow the list so as to finally find out what causes that ?

Hi,

I downloaded those files. The NEFs are binary equal, the XMPs differ only in
one line:
   xmpMM:DerivedFrom="21114700.NEF"
   xmpMM:DerivedFrom="DSC_0868.NEF"
Which is very ok. So there should be no difference between those two packages.

When I open these files in dt 2.4.4 I see the embedded preview. I can't open it
because it can't read white balance. Sometimes I have the same problem with my
Nikon files, too. It would be nice to have a solution!

Here is dt command line output.
Start:
$ darktable
[rawspeed] (DSC_0868.NEF) rawspeed::RawImage
rawspeed::RawDecoder::decodeRaw(), line 270: void rawspeed::BitStream::fillSafe() [with Tag = rawspeed::MSBBitPumpTag; Cache =

rawspeed::BitStreamCacheRightInLeftOut], line 128: Buffer overflow read in
BitStream
[temperature] failed to read camera white balance information from
`21114700.NEF'!
[temperature] `NIKON CORPORATION NIKON 1 V1' color matrix not found for image
[temperature] failed to read camera white balance information from
`21114700.NEF'!

Double Click on dt:

(darktable:18948): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_set_data: assertion
'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

--> I guess it goes back from invisible darkroom to lighttable here ;-)

Double click on 2nd file:

`DSC_0868.NEF'!
[temperature] `NIKON CORPORATION NIKON 1 V1' color matrix not found for image
[temperature] failed to read camera white balance information from
`DSC_0868.NEF'!

For me this is the most annoying feature in latest dt iterations: Not to open
the file and when simply developing all files in a folder: just stopping at
first
error without noticeable message. Can't dt just develop the next picture and
put a message into some log file?

Aw: Re: [darktable-user] One panel with basics

2018-07-13 Thread Michael Fritze

The "meta panel" approach is better than "single slider". With the "meta" concept no new algorithm is needed. Instead, the meta panel is linked to selected values of normal modules. If you need to dig deeper into those modules, go right there. Ideally the value selection would be configurable.

Lightroom 'easy sliders' are available also in Rawtherapee i.e. Rawtherapee followed the same LR approach.

DT is different (as correctly Remco said).

I started developing my raw files with DT, I feel very comfortable with it and when I was forced to use LR (during a training course) I felt disoriented because with DT I can do EXACTLY what I need, with LR I cannot...

I am not a developer but I think if we want double commands on each module, it means dt team will have to write TWO different algorithms for EACH module.

This is a huge effort for a rather small team!

You can feel uncomfortable with 'multi sliders' but you have available presets and styles that can be used as starting point and will welp to learn

(IF you want and/or have time to learn).

A 'single slide' control can seem easy to use but I am not so sure...

Cheers,

Maurizio

Given the repeated mention of Lightroom in this thread, I wonder how many of
those that want the 'easy' slider panel have been using LR before trying DT.
After all, DT on windows isn't all that old...

And it's very common to feel disoriented when you have to change your working
habits, even when the "new" system is better. That is not to imply that DT's
gui is better (or worse) than LR's, but it is different.

Hi,

I had myself some days ago a defective card reader (USB3) resulting in corrupt files. With 2 different PCs. I tried then with this reader plugged into USB2 port and files were intact. I recommend to test the combination card - reader - cables - port. E.g. with h2testw.

That is both good and bad. The good part is that we know why the images don't
open on Linux, the bad part is that the files you transferred so far are
corrupt. The next step would be to find out why images transferred with
digikam are corrupted. I don't know digikam, but maybe it has some setting
that makes it add metadata to the raw files?

as the number of tickets regarding this import bug is still increasing
(12154, 12161, 12163, 12177 ... to name a few concurrent tickets), here
is how it 'works':

A) copy the path you want to import from

B) paste this path into the right side of the import dialogue window
(file selector dialog)

and here we go!

It changes the path and the import works.

[darktable-user] Problems opening some files in DT

2018-03-31 Thread Michael Fritze

Hi,

I have since some time problems to open some files in DT. I don't know if it is a DT or camera problem. When I remember correct it started after I upgraded both DT to 2.4.1 and firmware of my Nikon D5500.

This is what happens on console:

LANG= darktable
[rawspeed] (_DSC4981.NEF) void rawspeed::HuffmanTable::setCodeValues(const rawspeed::Buffer&), line 176: Corrupt Huffman. Code value 92 is bigger than 16

(darktable:12090): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_set_data: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

(darktable:12090): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_get_has_tooltip: assertion 'GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed
[rawspeed] (_DSC4988.NEF) void rawspeed::HuffmanTable::setCodeValues(const rawspeed::Buffer&), line 176: Corrupt Huffman. Code value 92 is bigger than 16
[temperature] failed to read camera white balance information from `_DSC4988.NEF'!
allocation failed???

On desktop, DT says it could not read white balance.

These files are already added to the database, importing the files was no problem. I think for the preview DT reads the embedded thumbnail. Problem is opening the raw data itself.

Distro is Gentoo. DT is 2.4.1.

But I tried recently DT on a Win10 64bit machine. At least one file made also problems.

I guess here are some problems.

The GTK messages appear independent of having buggy raw files. I don't know if this comes from GTK or DT. However I'm rebuilding x11-libs/gtk+-3.22.19 and then DT. Maybe that helps.

Then there are rawspeed/temperature errors. Since it only affects some raw files, I'd guess it is a ramdom bug in the raw files.

Is there a way of scanning a folder for such buggy raw files?

What can I do to fix these pictures?

How can I find out what the root cause of this is?

Best Regards, Micha.

Graphics Card Speed according to https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php

750 Ti: 3712

1080 Ti: 13774

My guess is that a newer card would be much faster.

I know it exists, but I'm always scared of anything to do with graphics drivers on Linux

I am using i7-7700k with NVIDIA GTX 750Ti. There is a 30% performance improvement in the pixelpipe when using NVIDIA with opencl compared to CPU only. And the GTX 750Ti is not the fastet card. So I guess that you can speed up DT easily by 50% with the proper graphics card.

Hi Carlos,

I'm building a new PC myself, but currently it's only the plan to do so ;-)

However I would be interested if someone could test if the 1050 (Ti) is OK with current DT or if there is a major bug and 1060 is much better/faster.

Micha.

I am building a new PC, little by little. So far, I have the cabinet, motherboard, micro, memory, and a watercooling system. The video card is pending.
I'll leave the old PC as a 'muleto' ;-)
For my way of working with Darktable, no more than one, or two photos per session, and a very simple edition, I do not need great performances.
I think a 1050 will be enough advance compared to the 450.
Thank you very much everyone for the help.

2017-12-05 Thread Michael Fritze

Remco, thanks for pointing on this result.

Does anyone have a 1050 (Ti) and can confirm this result with current Darktable version?

Isn't the "boat" picture the same as the Bench.srw?

1060 can be in 3 and 6 GB versions. Is dt speed related to amount of card memory?

1060 is a bit higher priced than 1050 Ti, but when 2.5/3x faster it may be worth it. passmark says approx 1.5x faster only.

1050 Ti has several advantages: less power consumtion, smaller power suppy possible, less noise that's why I considered this one.

Regards, Micha.

Carlos,

please note that "Ti" versions are faster. With only 2D fans should be off.

Passmark says 720 points for your old card, 3250 for a 1050 Ti, 2768 for a 1050 non-Ti:

https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/directCompute.html

So faster anyway :-)

I'm considering this as my next card thats why I did already some research. There are many cards with different designs. I think a good idea is to have a 2-slot card blowing the air out of the case. Better than keeping the warm air inside.

Best Regards, Micha.

PS: I'm interested in your card choice and how it works.

Aw: [darktable-user] Variables in Watermark

2017-10-09 Thread Michael Fritze

Matt,

I used Inkscape to add filename and timestamp. Just open the simple_text.svg, modify and/or copy the string and save to correct location. (check docs)

Works very good for me as soon as I read the docs ;-)

Hello!

I've been Googling and searching like crazy to find out if it's possible to use variables (like $(EXIF_MONTH) ) in the watermark so that I can add a timestamp to exported photos programatically rather easily, instead of having to do it by hand.

I saw the simple_text.svg option and it looks like it uses a variable behind the scenes to display the text I enter on-image, but that box is never parsed for variables I enter.

Was hoping someone can at least confirm if this is not possible at the moment.

Thanks!

Well, it was *very* colored, a few letters in yellow, then in blue,
then white or black, a.s.o. I saw this e.g. in the left and right panel,
and when I selected a filmroll.

At the moment everything looks nearly perfect, a little bit too large
fonts, but white letters on dark background in the panels. I have set
180dpi in darktablerc und 144dpi for the system. Because of the
troubles I think I will keep this setting for a while.

In theory I have a little bit less than 140dpi. The monitor reports
itself the resolution is 3840x2160@60Hz (708.48 x 398.52 mm from the
PA328Q manual).

[darktable-user] Purge thumbnail cache from non-existent pictures

2017-03-15 Thread Michael Fritze
Hi,

I noticed my darktable cache is taking much space. So I searced for a way to
remove unused ones. Simple way would be to delete all and rebuild all. But I
think this could be done better.

When I run darktable-generate-cache, I can see as last line:
image 19584/19584 (100,00%) (id:31521)
So I have 19584 pictures with highest ID 31521. In .cache/darktable/mipmaps-
xxx/0 I have 23321 files. In 1 are 23532 and so on. Seems like some thumbnails
are not valid anymore.

I found purge_non_existing_images.sh and ran it. du wasn't changing. Had a
look inside. I think it is purging the database file from unused pictures.
Which is also good :-)

So here is my question: Is there a tool for removing obsolete thumbnails? I
would prefer that over a complete rebuild.

I usually import all and then decide which one to delete. So there are always
thumbnails generated which I don't need later.

Best Regards, Micha.
