As already written, there was a mad behaviour, in the beginning the
colors in the letters have been gone, when I switched back to -1, but
then not. Maybe there is something cached?

At the moment I have a good configuration without colors in the letters
and I do not want to get into troubles again. But if I see this again,
I will make a photo.

Could this be some kind of scaling issue? Can you take a photo, not a screenshot?

Well, it was *very* colored, a few letters in yellow, then in blue,
then white or black, a.s.o. I saw this e.g. in the left and right panel,
and when I selected a filmroll.

At the moment everything looks nearly perfect, a little bit too large
fonts, but white letters on dark background in the panels. I have set
180dpi in darktablerc und 144dpi for the system. Because of the
troubles I think I will keep this setting for a while.

In theory I have a little bit less than 140dpi. The monitor reports
itself the resolution is 3840x2160@60Hz (708.48 x 398.52 mm from the
PA328Q manual).

Google didn't find the information I wanted to check, so I suggest you
check yourself:
http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/subpixel.php

If your monitor has non-standard (not RGB) subpixel pattern letters on
your screen may seem colored.

Asus PA328Q.

I am guessing, if I set the system fontsize to 144dpi and darktablerc is
144 too, nothing changes, if it is greater than 144dpi fontsize changes.

At moment I am testing 180dpi. A little bit too much, but on the other
side with 600px border it is more or less ok. The goal is to get a 3:2
relation for the picture part of the screen.

Maybe try setting the DPI to something even bigger, say, 300. Does that change

Neither do I, --- at 100% it is ok on my screen. Could be an aliasing

Did you enlarge it? Directly from gdrive I can see it, but it is not so
extreme as with dt. Maybe it depends on the graphics driver. I use
nvidia-381 381.22-0ubuntu0~gpu16.04.2

I tried 288, looks a lot better with colors in the letter, nearly
nothing, but it is too large now.

Yes, that's how it should work – when your system is misconfigured and reports
the wrong resolution in the first place, or when you have a multi monitor setup
with differing DPI. Are you maybe using Wayland? I am not sure how well that

With a 3200 and a 2560 display (long side) I use:

screen_dpi_overwrite=76
panel_width=230 (also in the GUI Options)

But I have hi-dpi enabled with Mint Mate so this may not apply to you.
