You are only going to need exFAT if your card is over 32G.
I'm not saying that 32G is the new version of 640k, just that I don't see a
problem with using

To import my images, I use "Rapid Photo Downloader":

It imports the pictures, creates a backup if needed. Can rename files /
folders.

Shotwell imports with the 'gphoto2' library, just like Darktable, so this

Why don't you transfer the files to a HD and, then, import them in DT and

A friend of mine had this problem recently, I believe the issue was that
gphoto doesn't recognize SDXC cards, something to do with needing to use
FUSE. I could have sworn they got a fix landed for that, but I don't
know how long it'll take to make it into a release of gphoto and then
