Do you mean that tzdata is likely to prompt users during installs? That would mean throwing D-I translators on it to get the template translated. Is a debconf templates the real solution? *What* is indeed the question? signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#391529: Etch installer freezed by tzdata
reassign 391529 tzdata severity 391529 serious thanks Hi, I am now able to reproduce this bug. The problem is that the postinst of tzdata ask a question to the user, not via debconf, so it is not displayed. The bug has been triggered by the fact the version of tzdata in d-i beta3 and testing is different. The solution is to rewrite the postinst of tzdata + tzconfig using debconf. Bye, Aurelien -- .''`. No, this is not an option. The _only_ option we have now that the GNOME team have made their decision is to use 2.8.x. That is exactly why I wrote that paragraph. Frans Pop wrote: === D-I STRING FREEZE: Thu 12 Okt, 00:00 UTC - Sun 22 Okt, 00:00 UTC === Hi folks, This mail really should have gone out at least two and probably three weeks earlier. Blame goes to the discussions on d-{private,vote,wherever} which resulted in a serious drop in my motivation in recent weeks and in me dragging my heels on preparing the release. My apologies for letting you all down. GENERAL STATUS == The most important work planned for RC1 has been done and the installer in general works well, although some finishing touches and testing are still planned in the run up to Release Candidate 1 of the installer. I don't have a hard planned release date yet, but it will probably be first week of November. Detailed planning and updates will be sent to d-boot and d-release lists. General status and preparations for Etch RC1 can be found on [1]. As it looks now RC1 will be released with kernel 2.6.17, unless 2.6.18 is ready to migrate to testing in time for us to make the switch before the release. If not, we plan to switch to 2.6.18 ASAP after RC1 and release RC2 ASAP after 2.6.18 does migrate to testing. How can you help? - If you have some time, please help us by testing the installer. We need testing especially for the non-mainstream architectures and new features recently introduced in the installer (e.g. encrypted partitioning). Especially welcome is also specific testing by e.g. maintainers of packages/functionality used in the installer: RAID/LVM support, PCMCIA, filesystems (JFS, XFS, ...), bootloaders, etc. Please check if the bits *you* care about are supported well! Watch out for calls for testing on d-d-a! GRAPHICAL INSTALLER === The graphical installer now, for the first time, uses udebs built from official GTK library packages (2.8.x), which means we will be able to drop the various unofficial packages we have been using up to Beta 3. Thanks to Dave Beckett, Loïc Minier and Josselin Mouette for helping us get this far! The GNOME maintainers have decided to stay with 2.14 and GTK 2.8.x for Etch. This means that g-i will also stay with the current 2.8.x libs, so until the release we need to focus on that and leave work on 2.10.x for post-Etch. There is one RC issue that will need to be resolved before RC1: #390683. Just today mike emmel fixed the "boom" bug, it should technically possible switching to GTK+ 2.10.x. Moreover, after some debugging from my side yesterday mike possibly found where to look to fix #390683. If mike manages to fix #390683, we should be able to backport the fix into our patch tarball for GTK 2.8.20, unless (i guess) the fix is located in that huge block of code added in july to corrctly implement painters, which our tarball currently does not include because it's dated May 2006. In the latter case, we should perform a from scratch backport of the gtkdfb backend found in current GTK 2.10 CVS to 2.8.20. In the case a clean backport should be overcomplicated (i failed in this some weeks ago), would this be a valid reason to switch to a clean GTK 2.10.x set of libs for the d-i only? cheers Attilio -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I can confirm this problem. I did a test install on the last friday (10/06/2006) and experienced exactly this problem. I did not report it yet because I was expecting to test a daily image to see if it was already fixed. The image I used was http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/weekly/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-i386-binary-1.iso from 10/02/2006, md5sum 8fe60d622b81bd1e1ae0df128adf6313 . The one I tested, as said above, is a weekly built image from 10/02/2006. The md5sum is the one also noted above. > Can you provide the syslog for the installation (gzipped)? Unfortunately I don't have access to this virtual machine anymore so no way to provide syslog. But I'm planning to test one of the later daily images and chech if it's already fixed. I'll try to do it on Monday as I have no testing infrastructure available at home. Looks like I've been an idiot. I normally install in English, but with country selected as Netherlands. As no en_NL locale exists, this results in an en_US locale and the system is completely set up for English. However, that does mean that I have: debian-installer/language=en debian-installer/country=NL (And not country=US...) If I _do_ select US, I do indeed get iamerican as default after installation. So the issue is not that the logic is wrong, the issue that it is incomplete for my case: you cannot base the correct dictionary on language + country only. In the case where the country does not help to make a decision, it would be nice to also try to use the country part of the locale, which at that time is available in (/target)/etc/default/locale: LANG="en_US.UTF-8" Is that feasible as a wishlist request? What still confuses me is why I no longer see the questions being asked. I _know_ that I would get them a lot and that I would first be asked only en_GB and after that en_GB+en_US for ispell. Maybe that has to do with the fact that (either or both): - d-i (no longer?) propagates the priority set for the installation to the target system; - the default priority for debconf was changed from "medium" to "high". I can come close by installing for en/NL and forcing debconf/priority to "medium" for the chroot, but then I get the question for both dicts at the beginning (config script) and not for each dict separately (postinst). And I am *200% sure* I used to get that, even until recently. Anyway, I give up trying to reproduce that. If you could look at the wishlist I formulated above, that would be really great and sorry for the time this has cost everybody. At least we've now gotten a lot of testing :-/ Cheers and thanks for bearing with me/us, FJP pgpSBmPdhj3FI.pgp Description: PGP signature

[RFR] Display selected target for partitioning when choosing a recipe
> BTW. I also noticed that with "Use the largest continuous free space" > there is currently no indication of what disk will actually be used > or how big the free space is. It is of course kind of implied > (whichever disk has the largest free space), but IMO it would be kind > of nice to tell the user before it is done. In #391071 I proposed to display the target selected for partitioning in the dialog for selecting a recipe. I've put together a patch (attached) and I'd appreciate some feedback on that. Hi Christian, Hi Frans, As I have been on a long vacation (with no wifi unlike Mexico, unfortunately), I have not managed to report the activity at Georgian DI translations earlier. We have distributed the DI file on online translation tool so more people can participate and hope to get the file done in a very few days. I will be committing the current version of Georgian file at CVS today, so please, do not drop Georgian :) Thanks. > On the positive side: we've gained support for Marathi. s/Gujarati/Marathi Marathi had been accidentally enabled but the translations are currently all fuzzy. I disabled it along with Xhosa and Belarusian, yesterday. There is nearly no chance that Marathi gets activated as it started very late. Priti Patil, its translator did great work but he is in a deep review process which gives little chance to get the language activated. Gujarati is now out of danger, thanks to the effort of Kartik Mistry. Hindi is also now safe, thanks to the deep involvment of Nishant Sharma. Croatian has been rescued from the abyss by Josip Rodin who corrected the very bad (and badly maintained) translation we had. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
[Debian Installer] General release plan for RC1
=== D-I STRING FREEZE: Thu 12 Okt, 00:00 UTC - Sun 22 Okt, 00:00 UTC === Hi folks, This mail really should have gone out at least two and probably three weeks earlier. TRANSLATIONS As announced at the top of this mail there will be a string freeze from Okt 12 to 22, which means there will be no changes in English strings for level1, unless it is absolutely unavoidable. Please try to update your translations (for level 1) in that period (preferably to 100%). There will be a full upload of all installer components with updated translations immediately after the freeze and these will be included in the release. There have been a few important changes in strings this weekend and there may be a few more in the next few days. Please also reserve time for testing the installer in you translation after the release. The RC2 release is very likely the last chance to fix any issues! After discussion with Christian Perrier (the god of Debian/D-I i18n), we have, with regret, decided to drop support in the installer for a few translations that are very incomplete and have seen no activity from translators for a very long time. The affected languages are: Belarusian and Xhosa, and probably also Tamil and Georgian. Besides the incompleteness of the translations, an important factor in this decision is that the installer requires a huge amount of memory currently and a large percentage of that goes to translations. Disabling some languages gives us some needed breathing space. A few other languages are still in danger of being dropped before Etch. Christian and I will keep you updated on d-i18n. On the positive side: we've gained support for Marathi. INSTALLATION GUIDE == The installation guide will need at least some important updates and hopefully there will be a little time and energy left over for some restructuring, though probably nothing really major. Successfull install, two questions.
Foremost, thank you all for this fine installer. It is very intuitive and simply "feels right". Success report: I installed current i386 netinst daily on AMD Sempron 3000+, 512MB RAM, SATA HDD (on south bridge VIA vt8237, VIA chipset KT890), everything went fine, all devices were recognized (gigabit eth. Marvell 88E8001, Saphire Radeon X550 - incl. acceleration!). Minor question: Why is the modutils package installed when Debian does not use 2.4 kernels anymore? More serious question: I used the following crypto-setup: LVM on the top of one big dm-crypt partition (sda2) + small /boot partition (sda1). LVM currently contains one logical volume "root" holding everything (I'm planning to add "home" and "swap" later). While shutting down the system, I can see that crypto partition can not be stopped, because LVM is still running on the top of it and LVM can not be stopped, because it seems that LV "root" is still open: Deactivating swap...done Unmounting local filesystems...done Stopping remaining crypto disks... sda2_crypt(busy)done. Shutting down LVM Volume Groups... Can't deactivate volume group "vg" with 1 open logical volume(s) Stopping early crypto disks... sda2_crypt(busy)done. Will now halt. Shutdown: sda System halted. That does seem quite scary (as in data integrity). All filesystems were unmounted cleanly, but what about the underlying LVM and Crypto devices? Was their cache really flushed, when they were held open and busy? Regards Frank Bauer __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! The comment may be wrong for Debian, then (and adding xserver-xorg to desktop.preinst won't be necessary). Ubuntu's usplash 0.4-31 does: if db_get xserver-xorg/config/display/modes; then FIRSTVAL=`echo $RET | sed 's/,.*//'` x=`echo $FIRSTVAL | sed 's/x.*//'` y=`echo $FIRSTVAL | sed 's/.*x//'` else x=640; y=480; fi echo "# Usplash configuration file" >/etc/usplash.conf echo "xres=$x" >>/etc/usplash.conf echo "yres=$y" >>/etc/usplash.conf (The db_get should be replaced with parsing /etc/X11/xorg.conf; I haven't got round to this yet.) > Using data from another package without depending on it is aweful and > not something we should encourage. Well, it's optional in the case of usplash, and it has to be optional because a splash screen should not depend on an X server being installed. The use of data is there because X's resolution detection is complicated enough that reimplementing it in another place is a bad idea. I'm not sure how to do this any better at present. > The rest of the patch seems workable, although quite ugly in places. Yes, I wasn't happy with it as far as elegance goes; I went through several iterations of the code for subdividing the progress bar before settling on this layout.
